I read some of the FR books as a kid but Baldur's Gate when it came out was my first FR CRPG. Never played this until i bought the Forgotten Realms anthology in one of those budget dual-cd case packages from Walmart. I think in sixth grade the barrier of entry was a little high for me so i basically just missed it. Thank you for the retrospective, I've always been curious about it as a fellow drow/Drizzt fan myself.
It's definitely a bit of an oversimplification of the story themes in the book, but it was really fun to play through this adventure with my favorite drow ranger.
Small nitpick, Goldbox games are considered to be SSI's AD&D games using the same "Gold Box Engine", while SSI made other AD&D games as well, like Menzoberranzan, they're not considered as part of the "Goldox games".
I actually super appreciate this nitpick! Believe it or not I was trying to figure out if this was a "gold box game" but couldn't seem to find a definitive answer. They market it as a gold box classic in the modern re-release,, but a lot online kept saying it wasn't actually in engine. It's good to have an actual answer.
Gold box games are pool of radiance series, savage frontier series, frua, dragonlance series , spelljammers and... Buck Rogers xD all games have characteristic strategic turn based battle system (much better than smash-buttons from eob, ravenloft and menzo ;) )
Hey appreciate the support, glad to hear you enjoyed it. My first video on Lands of Lore is a very similar style of game, though I'll give you fair warning it was my first video so it's a bit rough around the edges. Other than that, I'll probably be doing a video on Ravenloft in the near future, a game made in the same engine.
Is this play-through using the gold box classic on steam or gog? I missed out on a lot of pc games growing up so videos that cover some of the lesser known classics are awesome.
It's the gold box on steam, I'm in the same boat that I missed out on a lot of these growing up so it's great to be able to go back and play them now. Next video I'm working on is Ravenloft, made on the same engine as this one.
