Wanna chime in to say that the later Llamas with Hats episodes are some of the best online animations I've ever seen, for the exact same reason that the fourth Laser Collection resonates with people so much. It was (edit: feels like it was) made as a protest from the creator who felt creatively stifled by his incredibly vocal fanbase; with said fanbase constantly demanding more of the same recycled and exhausted shtick.
But where LC4 went for low effort and an intentional anticlimax, LWH decided to create a high-effort descent into madness with a horribly miserable, yet very poignant ending. It was almost like he was punishing his viewers for not leaving well enough alone and by doing so, he made a bold statement about artistic integrity.

Filmcow actually did put out a statement on his site explaining the ending to Llamas With Hats, and it's actually a pretty simple explanation. So after Episode 4, Carl had set off a nuke, pinned faces to balloons, and made an endless conveyor of baby hands but it all became too predictable and there wasn't much room for escalation. Filmcow felt that the series was starting to get boring so he wanted to change things up and explore what happens to the crazy wacky one in the comedy duo when they've lost the gratification of having someone to work off of because he thought it was a funny idea. Then, he just brought it to the natural conclusion and ran with it.
So Carl has nobody to hold him back and he can just do what he wants completely unrestrained, but then after all of that, he's still lost the only person who ever cared about it so what's really left for him? Here's the main part of the actual explanation so you can read it yourself because it's legitimately interesting.
      ---
"A few years ago I was talking about Llamas with Hats with my partner Scuffy, who never particularly liked the series. Scuffy suggested the llamas should just “blow up.” This sparked an idea for a legitimately surprising fifth episode: Paul would die, and Carl would wander the world without meaning or purpose, and eventually drown himself in a river.
I laughed every time I considered the idea. It was certainly something no one had predicted. It would be like Garfield Minus Garfield, but if Jim Davis himself actually killed off Garfield.
As time went on, the idea evolved. I decided it should take place over a longer period of episodes instead of just one. Carl’s decline into depression and loneliness should be gradual. What happens to a character who was written as part of a comedy duo when half of that duo leaves? What meaning does that character’s existence have anymore?
Episode 5 would set up the problem: Carl’s antics can’t be shocking anymore. “I think I was expecting worse” says Paul. So did people in the comments. Carl opened up a crack in space-time to collect severed baby hands, and people were not surprised.
Episode 6 set up the solution: Paul would leave. What does Costello do if Abbott leaves? How does Costello as a character even make sense anymore?
Episodes 7-12 would depict the decline. Without Paul, Carl has to make a Paul. He tries putting a Paul mask on an animal. He tries talking to himself with the mask. Eventually he hallucinates that the mask really IS Paul.
Carl continues doing what he’s supposed to do - killing people and destroying things. But the art to his work is gone. Carl does things so that Paul will react to them - without Paul he falls apart, and so does the series. It’s less funny now. The end music gets more distorted. “You must finish your work” says the mask. The mask is Carl’s delusion. Carl no longer has meaning in the world he exists in. The work that must be finished is himself.
This is all still comedy. You might not find it funny and I’m sure a lot of people won’t. But imagine talking with a friend and they mention Llamas with Hats. They haven’t seen any of the episodes beyond the fourth. Now explain to them what happens in the series after that. “Oh yeah, Paul leaves Carl and then Carl spends every episode after that getting more and more depressed before throwing himself off a bridge.” "

    • @VidGams
      @VidGams 6 років тому +36

Now that IS very interesting. So it wasn't so much of a protest as it was a natural progression for the series. It's just startling how much the floating Paul mask seemed like a stand-in for an overly demanding fanbase, and how much Carl's gradual anger towards it felt like backlash from a tired creator, with lines like "I'm DONE, Paul! Why are you still yelling at me!?", especially if that wasn't FilmCow's intention!

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 6 років тому +20

      +David John-Bores
Yeah. I think that the audience reaction and demand was always something on the back of his mind, though, even with it not being the real intention behind this. To quote the rest of the explanation (which means I've now put up almost all of it)
"The plan was to escalate things more and more with the final episode being the full destruction of Earth. After episode four came out, however, everyone had the fifth episode pegged. Most of the comments predicted that the fifth episode would see Carl “blowing up the Earth.” I was embarrassed that my plan for the series was that predictable. Llamas with Hats isn’t as funny if you know exactly what Carl is going to do next.
      So, episode five never happened.
Llamas with Hats could have gone on forever. Like Garfield, or the Annoying Orange. Carl would do something bad and Paul would yell at him, over and over again for as long as people would watch. I could have written it well enough to satisfy most people, but it would never have had the same magic as the original episodes. The only way for Carl to continue surprising people was for him to actually do something surprising."
So I have to believe that there was a really solid idea that he was at least considering just keeping it going and giving in to the fans, but I think also that Filmcow knew that wouldn't be as interesting or get as much attention overall. So it seems super possible that he was kind-of getting at the fans without really realizing it by just doing what seemed right to him at the time.

    • @tomo4977
      @tomo4977 6 років тому +20

Scoutic 124 its baby steps, but if you look at the bigger story time animators, meme animators(some of them at least because there's still alot of kids in there), Basically the ones leading the change in the most popular animations right now, theyve been dramatically rising in quality, getting multiple people to work on one video, making more animation. And then you've got fandom animators, let's player animators, meme (the real kind) animators, especially furry animators man have you seen those guys?! There's like a brand new fully animated episode for a new series coming out every month.
I mean it's starting off small, especially since I believe the people leading this change are much younger and newer again, but it's becoming popular again, even youtube recognised it by featuring actual animators in their rewind. It was small, but they've never done that before. I definitely think animation is returning to this site with a very different feel, a different look, a different attitude. Its quite nice actually, I think overall people are more demanding and respecting of different skills, atmosphere and styles. I'll definitely join it and add to this rise as soon as I can finish hah, even if I want to take a "serious" route instead of complete comedy.

Same, honestly. 'Cause the most popular stuff is honestly the polar opposite of the lolrandom animations of the early to mid 2000's. It's all storytimes and commentary. Sometimes animatics of popular podcasts. And that's all well and good (Lord knows I love watching My Brother My Brother and Me animations after a bad day), but it's a very interesting shift.

It's crazy watching people younger than me and presumably you discovering stuff like Newgrounds from essentially an anthropological perspective. Kids who are like 16 or 17 sometimes, making videos more thoroughly researched/written/produced than any grainy webcam vlog from the 00s could have dreamed of. On the one hand it makes me sad, because younger people look at badger badger and are like lolwtf and I have to acknowledge that it's just not 'my time' anymore, but otoh I'll take the endless hours of professional content from the hundreds of channels I sub to over badger badger any day. The endless march of progress and all that.

Online animation died when UA-cam became the only viable means for animators to reach an audience, but then UA-cam pulled the rug out from under them by changing their algorithm so that only channels which upload every other day get recommended.

There are many paths that led to 2000s animation landscape. You could equally go at lengths to how insanely influential Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected" was to this movement - despite not being intended as an "internet" animation, it largely predicted and influenced a lot of the tropes, atmosphere, pacing and humour that can be found in videos talked about here like ASDF series, Charlie or creations of David Firth.

"Entirely because of Newgrounds, many iconic early animations that existed online can be enjoyed in 1080p as if they were created yesterday."
No, this is because Newgrounds allowed animators to upload flash files that used vector art (which has infinite resolution); the reason that you view them as videos today is that the people on Newgrounds developed a tool to convert those older flash animations into other video formats; people who uploaded videos probably were not uploading huge video files very often, because their connections were poor when compared to today's speeds.
Sadly with flash being unsupported by adobe come 2020, many animators probably won't be uploading their works in swf files to Newgrounds so more recent works won't be able to be converted into a better video format.

    -Storytime Animators
-The rise of Jaiden and OddOnesOut
-Very cashgrabby or god awful "copycats"
-Some Animatic focused channels (not to be confused with Animation)
-Some Animations channels that are still alive but not really active because youtube is not their main source of income (crossing my fingers for: SamBakza and MysteryBen)
I really appreciate how you tackled animation in youtube as I aspired to be one without becoming a storytime channel (but I know its rather ambitious and impossible and Im just aiming to be a web comicer now)

Even if I don't find it funny today, the fact that I once did and people still do leads me to think that its still good, in a sense, just for a certain audience of children whose brains are eager to explore the different corners of comedy, starting with random absurdity.

Dude, Filmcow wasn't just depressing. He was aggressive, both passively and aggressively. With Llamas With Hats, people kept demanding more and kept being annoying with the CAAARL meme. So those last episodes with the mask were supposed to represent him. The mask represented his fans, constantly asking for more while at the same time being insanely annoying, loudly repeating CAAARRLLLL as many times as possible to make us just as sick of it as he is. As for Charlie the Unicorn, after he officially ended it, people got so angry at him that they started telling him that their ideas are better. They kept "suggesting" things for the "next" episode of Charlie. So he told his fans that the next episodes will be fan-suggested, everything will be from the fans. So he made Charlie Teh Unicron to point out how ridiculous and stupid those suggestions were, and how done he is with Charlie. A quote from my friend kinda runs parallel to this whole thing. "A Joke is like an Onion. You have to peel back the layers until it makes you cry"

I'm incredibly happy to see a popular modern creator speak fondly of Eddsworld. It doesn't get enough credit for how clever and funny it was and honestly still IS to this day, despite how old it is, it's aged well in my opinion (despite some of the older episodes limited animation.) It was probably my absolute favorite UA-cam animated series growing up, and Edd Gould (May he rest in peace) is easily one of my favorite content creators of all time.
You've always been a man I respected Quinton, and this only furthers that respect.

The thing with ASDF movie "selling out" is that tomska is a business man. He knows what will work and how to capitalize on them. ASDF is his most popular series and he uses the revenue from them to fund non-asdf projects, like his live action sketches and other animations. So he may have sold out but it has given him the opportunities to do more.

Your videos got much more attention and got funnier as well, you tackled some new ideas and had a lot of fun with them, and now you're making what i would consider to be the equivalent to a series of nostalgic documentaries on many of the big icons of youtube, and their ways of impacting not only the sight, but the world.

I knew the animators video was coming and that newgrounds even though is a different site was part of the fallen giants of youtube. On another note Edd's death was followed by one of the weirdest feeling. It was the first and maybe only popular person i cared that he died at such young age. But he wasn't popular enough for real world to care but i felt that every other creator that mentioned it was a friend and that we lost one of our friends even though we didn't know each other. ASDF movies comedic-values are their twists and the subversion of expectations with absurdes situations

Where's the OneyNG? RageNinteen? Harry Partridge? I saw Alan Becker's Animator vs Animation for a segment, why not mention him? Thank you, thank you so much! I requested a video on Eddsworld a while back & you brought something unexpected to the table, a walk down memory lane. Some of these animations I forgot existed until watching this & it was great being reminded of them. Of course I never forgot about Eddsworld, Tomska, & Secret Agent Bob, even though I popularized Eddsworld at my high school, Filmcow stuff was always being talked about but as for Tomska, I didn't really hear much about asdfmovie until like 2013, I was still sore about Edd's death & when I got exposed to asdfmovie, it made me happy because it reminded me of the Tom's Tales series, Tom's Tales of Awesome was the third Eddsworld cartoon I saw & that's when I officially decided that I was hooked. Holy crap man, is that a chair? Dunno why the chair thing tickled my funny bone so much but it did.
Rewinding back to about 2007, 2008-ish, this is when I took Career Ed in high school & somehow passed it, guess my love for writing essays really came through during the final (big surprise seeing the length of my usual comments lol), but what did I do for most of the class? One kid that was always up to date on the latest UA-cam animations had them downloaded onto his iPod so we sat in the back corner & watched them. That's how I got exposed to stuff like Charlie the Unicorn, I could stay in the loop with casual conversations on the topic which was commonly brought up. One series he had on his iPod that I noticed you didn't mention is Happy Tree Friends. Yeah, I have a very dark sense of humor & at the time found it funny, today I just can't look at that series again. My sense of humor is still dark, I just find that shows such as Action League Now does the whole mutilating thing so much better. Maybe that's just me. I won't get into asking why that was leftout knowing there's a part two but I remember some sort of lawsuit or something happening in the past regarding that series, my memory is super fuzzy on the details or it at all, I just remember there was a whole copyright issue going around on that one & it even resulted in a video that joked/commented on the fact. I get it if that's why Happy Tree Friends is avoided & while it's an interesting topic for discussion, especially that I forgot nearly everything about it & would love a refresher, I'm totally fine if the topic is avoided for a reason such as that.
Again, thank you for this, love the video, love reliving those memories, even though I did cringe a bit at some of them, like seriously, EVERYONE at school quoted that badger thing & I had never seen the video until years later so I was confused as to why people thought it was funny. The video cleared nothing up. A heavy amount of what I watched in career ed was Happy Tree Friends & when it wasn't, it was usually Charlie the Unicorn or something else from Secret Agent Bob but that kid did quote the badger video a lot.
I actually didn't frequently use UA-cam until 2007, I went there on occasion but ever since coming across my first UA-cam poop, I was cautious of treading the website. Eddsworld is what pushed me to use UA-cam, I discovered it on Newgrounds, found out about the website & mostly watched his videos there, but also followed his UA-cam channel because I discovered I could send Edd messages on UA-cam & he always responded, he was such an amazing person to actually read through my super long messages & respond. It's what got me exploring UA-cam on my own, I'm sad I can no longer access my old account again & possibly look back at some of my old favorites & rewatch them, this video made me wish to revisit some old animated stuff on UA-cam & I did find some weird & obscure stuff. There's also stuff I voiced in but minor things on videos that only got a couple hundred views. I miss the old days of Internet animations but hope for some new ones. I look forward to seeing what movieunleashers has in store for example, he's dark but dark & comedy go so great together.

I feel as if the clip in ‘LWH’ is a (not so) subtle metaphor for the way that fans of the creator would constantly ask for more and more of the same content, despite the fact that Filmcow may have felt that it was already a dead horse that he would only continue to kick with more installments. The line “there’s nothing left. It’s all gone” followed by “you must continue your work” seems like a fitting dialogue between a creator who finished his project and fans who demand for more.
At least, that was my speculation after watching the series.

I think it takes a brave man to chide ASDF for having merch while plugging a sponsor.

Animation is not a genre, it's a medium or method (depending on context).

I watched a lot of that early internet animation in high school computer lab, I’m not sure if it was blocked or we didn’t know about but we got our flash content from flash world. I’m over 30 now but a few years ago I rewatch the asdf movies and was still entertained, maybe because it was like a song I could sing along too.

Since I'm still learning how to animate since last August, I'm really looking forward to see your comment on the 2012 of animation on youtube and the current wave. Take your time researching on them one at a time. :)

No mention of The Demented Cartoon movie by Brian Kendall? It predated either of those three series and was a pretty big inspiration for a lot of these animators I'm sure.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention egoraptor in this video. He is one of the paragons of animation for me, in a way reintroducing me to UA-cam as a pre teen/ young adult after a hiatus from my childhood with things like the lazer collection or Charlie the unicorn. It’s a shame he all but abandoned his channel in favor of game grumps, which is a channel I enjoy quite a bit, but there’s something about his animations on his channel, the charm he had in his sequelitus videos that really can’t be found a lot of other places. I imagine you’re going to at least give a passing mention to him in part 2, but I would still be interested to know why if you didn’t, if you don’t.

I guess he'll be more featured in the "fall" as it isn't really an analysis of his style, he was one of the titans, but for a historical piece the prominent part was when these titans started losing money for more time given, and moved on to things like video games in order to make a living. This will all be covered in part 2
