I’ve watched every Magic tutorial on UA-cam, and this one blows them all away. The only one to teach by playing the game. And the way you pair the gameplay with the rules, just masterful man, great job.
I just started playing again with my son. I played some back in the 90's when I was in high school it's been so long that I needed this reminder. Thank you.
I'm pretty knowledgeable of MtG rules but I still enjoy your videos a lot because of the clear and structured way you explain concepts. Quite satisfying!
Thanks so much for this series. A friend and I are just starting to get into Magic (well, she's getting _back_ into it, but that's neither here nor there) and, after about 15 years of Yugioh, there's a bit of confusion and I had trouble making heads or tails of First Strike and the Magic Wiki is so woefully lacking in information compared to the Yugioh Wiki that I wasn't understanding the simultaneous damage aspect of combat, so I couldn't grasp what made First Strike so useful; now I do thanks to your clear, concise explanation.
Our pleasure! That's what we are here for ;). Just post a question should any more questions pop up and we (or someone in the comments) will get back to you asap.
Budget MTG Decks Thanks again. So far, the only thing I think I may have issue with is fully understanding the stack; Yugioh has a similar concept in the form of chains, with each response forming a new link in the chain (and some cards requiring to be a specific number of links down the chain, but I've always found those to be too situational to be useful) and the last card in the chain resolving forth and so on and so forth. From what I've seen, it's just similar enough to Magic's stack to cause problems trying to compare the two, so I'm looking forward to your eventual video on the subject.
In our school we have this class where we get to choose our own activity and mtg was available. Only one of those who ended up in our group knew how to play. So here I am, learning. Looking forward to actually getting to play tomorrow. Last week we only had time to watch a game between our teacher and the guy who knew how to play, and admire our new cards.
These tutorials are awesome! I just started playing Magic on Friday with my first lesson. This is so very helpful to continue learning on my own before hitting my next game! Thank you for this!
Thank you! Your tutorials are sooo helpful! I got free mtg decks a few days ago and I'm planning on attending Friday Night Magic. Wish me luck! (I hope I won't make a fool out of myself lol)
Hi Zoe, glad you found them useful! Make sure to check before hand which format your LGS plays on Friday Night Magic and that you have a appropriate deck to participate. If you have any questions let us know. Oh and good luck!
Hi +Braxton McKinley, glad the videos helped a bit. What do you mean exactly with premium cards? Do you mean cards which are just very expensive or foil cards or cards which are given away as promos?
In the Vigilance portion of the video, Steadfast Guard is a 2/2 and Raging Goblin is a 1/1. The Raging Goblin dies of course but shouldnt the leftover attack point from Steadfast Guard be dealt to the opponents life? In the video you said Steadfast Guard is fully blocked but why is that? I hate that this is the only thing i didn't understand lol. Awesome videos by the way!!!
Thanks for the question. Creatures always deal their full damage to the other creature and any excess damage is not dealt to the opponent. Visualize it as the Steadfast Guard running into the Raging Goblin and pummeling the poor goblin with all its might (even though half his strength would have been enough to finish the goblin off). Now creatures with "Trample" do exactly what you described earlier, they deal the necessary damage to kill the blocking creature and then deal the rest to the opponent.
this is the best tutorial out there but, I have a question. If I had a first strike creature attacking and my opponent blocks with another first strike creature, who would strike first? Or would the damage be done at the same time?
what happens if i attack a first strike creature and my oponent deffends with also a first strike creature ? does the first attacker resolves first or they both die ??
Hi! I had a question about conflicting cards. My card (5/4 Demonlord of Ashmouth with flying) also undying (When it dies it comes back under it's owners control with a +1+1 counter on it) My opponent played a card during his turn which is the enchantment Unhallowed pact. (When enchanted creature dies, return it to the battlefield under your control.) if my opponent casts that enchantment on omy demonlord, which card overrules when Demonlord dies? (and what about the +1+1) THanks!
The deathtoucher deals 1 point of damage to one 3/3 and 1 point of damage to the other 3/3 and 1 point of damage is wasted because it doesn't have trample and the two 3/3s together deal 6 damage to the deathtoucher...so all creatures die.
Ok I'm a bit confused with Trample and Combat, so if the creature does not have trample and its power 4, while my toughness is 3, I wouldn't take that difference of 1 as life damage?
Budget MTG Decks Thanks, guess I'm a bit too used to Yu-Gi-Oh. Is that work banned? haha. My brother came across a few thousand MTG cards and they've just been sitting in the house for a year or 2, finally trying to see what the game is about. From what I've learned I might not like it as much. I'm trying a Green/White gain life / mana / attack points deck. Sadly it seems my brothers Red/Black burn deck is draining my LP quicker then I can gain them. xD
Well there you have it, if your brother is beating you the game will suck :P. As soon as you start beating your brother you will see the true joy of this game XD. All kidding aside, if you want really balanced decks to play against each other, look into our "Duel Decks" series on our channel.
also the deathtouch like for example, a creature 1/3 with deathtouch fights against a creature also with 1/3 no deathtouch. Does the deathtouch kills no matter how much damage u have? and like the example above?
Deathtouch kills no matter how much damage is dealt. So 1 point of damage or 10 will all kill a creature regardless of toughness. So in the example above the 1/3 deathtoucher will kill the 1/3 non-deathtoucher without dying itself.
what if a first strike creature attacks another first strike creature? woule damage be done to each other simutaneously just like during a normal combat phase since they both have first strike?
Even though the Vigilant character dealt more damage than necessary to the creature, does the excess damage go to the player or is it negated because the creature absorbed all of the damage?
All the damage goes to the defending creature regardless of damage or toughness. The only time excess damage goes to the player is if the attacking creature has Trample.
Hey David!! I really want to learn how to play magic but I need help getting cards. Would you rather recommend I go to a card shop which I don't know if I have one near me or go to a target or store that has magic cards!!
If you have a friend who wants to learn with you you can just go to any store which has magic cards and get two duel decks to play against each other. If you don't then we recommend you go to a card shop and ask if there is a time when other come to play and if anyone can teach you, you can get a deck at that shop too.
Also! I do have a friend who plays I was wondering if i should try with his cards cause i don't know if magic will be to complicated for me?? what should i do?
Thank You, David! Today I went to a card store and got a free welcome deck I have practiced with my family and I am getting to know the game better because of you I thank you so much!
If I attack with a creature with 3 power who possesses the ability Lifelink who gets blocked by a creature with 2 toughness, will I gain 2 life equal to the blocking creature's toughness or 3 life equal to the attacking creature's power?
So do creatures with vigilance get their health back after you attack with them and they get blocked? If so, do they get that back at the start of your opponents turn or your following turn? Also, do they get their health back after blocking and when does that occur? And for trample creatures, even if they are dead from the blocking creature, their damage still gets dealt to the opponent?
All creatures have damage removed from them at the end of each turn. Trample damage still goes through to your opponent even if the creature is killed during combat.
You always untap all your mana at the beginning of your turn so no matter how much mana you used during your turn and your opponents turn you will always have all of it available to you again at the beginning of your turn.
oh ya david what happens if the creature u attacking has first strike and the oppenet decides to block that creature which also has first strike idk what happen
lifelink: example how much life do you gain when you got a 5power lifelink creature against a blocking 1 thoughness creature? do you gain all the life of the creature with lifelink its power or do you gain life for how much it is blocked?
ah budget creatures with that static ability 'indestructible' do they take damage when attacking or defending and do they go exile like for spell cards that says exile target creature i know by far spells with destriy target creature have no effect on this ability
mr Budget MTG Decks, i am trying to make a friend who likes to play magic. But my local game shop is filled with people who are much better then me. (thus why i am watching this video) and suggestions?
Hi you can just call me David :P. The only way you will get better in anything in life is practice and especially with people who are better than you. We suggest you go to your game shop on Friday night and join the games there, you will be paired with people who will kick your butt, but you will learn a lot from them after each game. Especially if you ask them after each game what you could have done better.
If means that the enchantment only gives a particular bonus to the creature it is enchanting if you control a permanent (land, creature, artifact etc) which meets those requirements. Do you have a concrete example?
It does not. If a creature is blocked all attacks are blocked, even if the blocking creatures get's killed before the damage step (by an instant speed removal spell for instance).
does lifelink trigger when the creature with lifelink gets attacked, or only when it attacks? Same question for trample and first strike. if a 3-2 creature with trample blocks a 2-2 creature who attacks, does the extra 1 damage go to the opponents health, or only if the creature with trample is attacking? and last, if a creature has first strike, does it work the same as blocking versus attacking? completely new and trying to figure things out, thanks
okay thanks, so the only way to kill a creature with first strike is something other than an attacking creature? also what if two creatures with first strike engage in combat?
Good question +Jared Gargus. First strike is a passive ability which means it always works, on the defense and offence. If both creatures have first strike they hit each other at the same time, just like two creatures without first strike would hit each other at the same time.
If you are referring to which two colors work well together, each combination has it's own strengths and weaknesses. However ally colors usually have the most support. mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Allied_color
+TheAquila It does not matter if you use your creature to attack or block. In both cases the creature with first strike does it's damage first and then if the other creature has enough toughness to survive, it will deal it's damage to the creature with first strike. Example. Your opponent attacks with a 3/3, you block with a 3/1 first strike. Your opponent's creature dies and the first striker lives.
Yes you can, the "Format" you are playing determines exactly which editions are legal. Examples of formats are, Standard, Modern, Commander (also known as EDH).
this dude is better at explaining the rules other then mtg actual channel

I just started playing magic and these tutorials helped me so much, thanks😄
Thanks for letting us know, good luck with this fun and rewarding hobby!
Budget MTG Decks More like fun and financially draining hobby lol
It's not financially draining if you play budget ;).
username taken same here just got a starter deck today
I'm pretty knowledgeable of MtG rules but I still enjoy your videos a lot because of the clear and structured way you explain concepts. Quite satisfying!
Thanks you for the hard work making these videos, they helped me heaps.
That's what we are here for ;). Glad you found them helpful.
I am so happy that you replied. It is not every day a youtuber with 39K subs talks to you.
Dude, these tutorials are awesome!
Thanks James, appreciate the positive feedback ;).
This channels tutorials are a gift we didn't know we needed.
This comment is just the boost we didn't know we needed ;).
I recently moved to an island where everyone plays this game. This guy has allowed me to get at there level quickly, great tutorial
Happy to hear that! Have fun playing Magic!
Super helpful! Thanks!
same
Your explanations actually make sense. Now I understand thank you btw
This is the BEST tutorial for MTG that I've found. Thank you so much.

Yeah we completely get that. The stack can be tricky to grasp but simple once you get it. We will get on that video asap ;).

Thanks David you are a good guy
one of the very few videos that actual make sense
These are some of the best "how to mtg" tutorials on youtube. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to let us know ;).
thanks for this, i am just getting into the game and you have cleared up a load of confusion.
Fantastic tutorial series that actually demonstrates everything that's being explained.
This is seriously so well made, excellent presentation in every aspect and extremely eloquent!
Nice job explaining it. I’m a beginner at Magic 🐲
Glad to hear you liked it ;)
yeah, absolutely the best explanation of the game. thanks
Thanks that's quite the complement!
THx best guide ive seen so far
Hear! Hear! Bravo man. This was a tremendous video and explanation.
These tutorials are awesome! I just started playing Magic on Friday with my first lesson. This is so very helpful to continue learning on my own before hitting my next game! Thank you for this!
Happy you found them useful! Let us know if you have any questions!
I'm new to magic and this helps alot thanks!!
Glad we could help +Nicholas Bradshaw!
More!!! We want more :')
Hi! Happy to oblige. More of what though? Static abilities, other tutorials or more deck tech videos?
I was excited to serif this would all be the same game, but that would be too complex for starters to MtG. Keep up the good work!
Yeah that was our original plan too...but it would have made the episode one hour long! This just proved more effective.
Thanks 🙏, yours videos are so helpful and nice
Happy to be of service Mark! Thanks for letting us know ;).
Just got into MTG, this video has really helped me understand how to play this game.
Happy to hear it was useful to you ;)
man, great series for beginning players like me

Thanks Kay! Appreciate the compliment ;).
You are very good at explaining this game! thanks man
You are too kind +Pablo Fierro, thanks for taking the time to complement us!
Great vid, as have been the previous ones. Thanks!
Thanks for letting us know Keith!
for the new decks like the twisted reality and other trial decks
Great tutorial
I haven't watched all the vids yet but so far so good, but I wanted to know if you could make a video about premium cards and how they are special.
Hi +Braxton McKinley, glad the videos helped a bit. What do you mean exactly with premium cards? Do you mean cards which are just very expensive or foil cards or cards which are given away as promos?
As a new player this tutorial is amazing
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Profesionally explained:) Thank you!!!
Hope will put it to good use ;).
Fantastic videos man
Great video thanks for the help!
No problem Isak! Glad we could be of assistance ;).
Thanks! GReat help.

Understood!!! Thank you for the reply im new to this but these 1 - 9 videos are the best on youtube as they have helped me a lot!! Thanks again 👍
No sweat! Glad to have helped out ;)
this is the best tutorial out there but, I have a question. If I had a first strike creature attacking and my opponent blocks with another first strike creature, who would strike first? Or would the damage be done at the same time?
The damage is done at the same time.
Hi I'm just starting out and I love these tutorials. Do you have any more complex suggestions?
Not yet, but we are working on more!
Thanks
These videos are awesome...but that intro music makes me wants to put down the cards and fist fight.
Then we have achieved our mission...
and mydecks comes with most creatures and some lands with colourless or devoid
The video doesn't say how to show life totals over 20 from Lifelink. Do you put a second d20 up on the board?
and 1 more is menace the creature cantbe blocked unless there is 2 or more creatures blocking the attacking creature
How is double strike damage dealt?
Double strike is basically two separate attacks. One First Strike and one Regular Strike (which is what creatures normally do).
what happens if i attack a first strike creature and my oponent deffends with also a first strike creature ? does the first attacker resolves first or they both die ??
Hi! I had a question about conflicting cards. Hello, one thing i have a discussion with friends: if there is a 3/3 deathtouch blocked by two 3/3, what happens? thank you for helping in advance :)
The deathtoucher deals 1 point of damage to one 3/3 and 1 point of damage to the other 3/3 and 1 point of damage is wasted because it doesn't have trample and the two 3/3s together deal 6 damage to the deathtoucher...so all creatures die.
and another static abiltiy here missing is hexproof any creature or enchantment is immune to spells u missing 2 abilties devoid and hexproof
why doesnt the youthful knight die to the rune claw bear? It only has one point of life and the runeclaw bear deals 2 damage.??
Because it has first strike. It deals damage before creatures without first strike. Watch the video at: ua-cam.com/video/JJkNAt5xHrw/v-deo.html
Ok I'm a bit confused with Trample and Combat, so if the creature does not have trample and its power 4, while my toughness is 3, I wouldn't take that difference of 1 as life damage?
Correct +LifeIsARide. As long as the creature is blocked it won't do damage to you (unless it has trample).

That is 100% correct +coolguyabc21. Sorry for the late response!

First play with his/her collection. Once you know what you like you can buy those cards ;).
Thank You, David! Today I went to a card store and got a free welcome deck I have practiced with my family and I am getting to know the game better because of you I thank you so much!
No need to thank me! We are just happy you are getting to know this wonderful game ;). - David
What about if a creature with Deathtouch goes up against a card like Stuffy Doll?
Stuffy Doll will receive the damage, deal it to the chosen player and survive as indestructible creatures can't be killed by deathtouch.
If I attack with a creature with 3 power who possesses the ability Lifelink who gets blocked by a creature with 2 toughness, will I gain 2 life equal to the blocking creature's toughness or 3 life equal to the attacking creature's power?
3
Lifegain is always determined by the creatures power (the one with lifelink).
Trample damage still goes through to your opponent even if the creature is killed during combat.
i think itsmissing 1 more static ability it is devoid the creature or spell does not have a colour
Yeah affinity kill
What happens if a deathtouch card isnt defended...... does it then only deal the damage stated to your opponent?
Correct. A 1/1 deathtouch rat would deal 1 damage to your opponent if the attack was not blocked.
cos i bought the twisted reality deck mostly mono blue as in pure blue cards for 18.95 sg dollar
Does a creature with trample also have its effect when it is blocking
It does not.
What if my opponent attacks with a 6/5 creature with trample and i block with a 1/1 creature with deathtouch. What happens?
You take 5 damage and both creatures die +Bobby Shirk.
ok thanks
Im new and i need answers, if i use a instant spell in the opponent turn, and it coast 1 mana, in my turn i cant use that 1 mana?
You always untap all your mana at the beginning of your turn so no matter how much mana you used during your turn and your opponents turn you will always have all of it available to you again at the beginning of your turn.
oh ya david what happens if the creature u attacking has first strike and the oppenet decides to block that creature which also has first strike idk what happen
Both first strike creatures deal damage to each other at the same time, same as with regular damage creatures do normally.
lifelink: example how much life do you gain when you got a 5power lifelink creature against a blocking 1 thoughness creature? do you gain all the life of the creature with lifelink its power or do you gain life for how much it is blocked?
You gain all the life based on the creatures power +Koen Beeckman. So in this case 5 life. Regardless of the blocking creatures toughness.
Hi. Whenever I decide to block with a creature that has lifelink, can I still gain life by the damage dealt to attacking creature?
That is correct +Sebastián Álvares.
ah budget creatures with that static ability 'indestructible' do they take damage when attacking or defending and do they go exile like for spell cards that says exile target creature i know by far spells with destriy target creature have no effect on this ability
Hi +Lim Boon Tian, they take damage, but just don't die from it and they do go into exile when exiled.
What dtermines if the attacker or blocker attacks first?
Both deal damage at the same time. If a creature has first strike it deals damage first. Being an attacker or blocker does not affect this.
mr Budget MTG Decks, i am trying to make a friend who likes to play magic.
Thanks ill try :)
Hi started playing again! But what is menace? I think its a new static abilities
It sure is. Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)
Budget MTG Decks So what does it mean? Because i cant really understand the format a bit :
A creature with menace can't be blocked except by two or more creatures. So it can't be blocked by a single creature.
I got a card that says Enchanted creature has blank as long as you control a blank or blank permanent. What does that mean?
If means that the enchantment only gives a particular bonus to the creature it is enchanting if you control a permanent (land, creature, artifact etc) which meets those requirements. Do you have a concrete example?
regarding double strike, if the first volley kills the blocker, does the second volley hit the player?
no
It does not.
Good questions. All work for both attacking as defending except for trample. Trample only works when the creature is attacking.
okay thanks, so the only way to kill a creature with first strike is something other than an attacking creature? also what if two creatures with first strike engage in combat?
I have raging goblin :)
Better than a raging erection. :)
what if I attack with a creature with first strike and the opponent blocks with a creature with first strike?
Then they both deal damage to each other at the same time. The same as if two creatures without first strike deal damage to each other.
and david what happens if a creature as negative power like -2/4 i get confused does it deal damage to itself or it dosent deal damage
Negative power means it simply deals no damage. So a -2/4 creature is equivalent to a 0/4 creature.
+Budget MTG Decks they couldn't write 0 xD
When trample creatures block other creatures. Does the trample effect applies?
No, unless the card specifically states otherwise blocking creatures do not deal damage to their opponent
first strike only applies when the creature that have it is the attacker? or it applies both times? attacking and blocking?
It applies to combat +Kenneth Ulises Reyes Castelán. Combat is both attacking and blocking.
+TheEnigmaCode37 No, he had attacked with it in part 2. When a creature attacks it becomes tapped(so it can't block) until your next turn.
***** Happy to hear. Mtg is a great game but people may find it quite complex at the beginning..
If the card is defending, can it still use first strike? If so, and the opponent has first strike too, who strikes first?
Good question +Jared Gargus. First strike is a passive ability which means it always works, on the defense and offence. If both creatures have first strike they hit each other at the same time, just like two creatures without first strike would hit each other at the same time.
+Budget MTG Decks Alright thank you
Hi I'm starting to this and I would like to know what land is best to mix like red with blue or with green?
We are not quite sure what you mean +UnbornUnicorn, do you want to know which lands give you red, blue and green mana?
+Budget MTG Decks I just want to know what copies are best to mix?
If you are referring to which two colors work well together, each combination has it's own strengths and weaknesses. However ally colors usually have the most support. mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Allied_color
does a creature with vigiliance get tapped when blocks
No it does not +reginald parks
If you're using a d20 to show life, how do you show more than 20?
Grab yourself another D20 and go to town ;)
Does first strike work the same way if the creature with first strike is blocking?
Yes, attacking or blocking makes no difference.
Budget MTG Decks what if it is against another first strike? Do they just follow normal rules?
Yeah then they hit each other at the same time, just like regular damage.
Then what happens it you block an opponent by using a first strike card against them?
+TheAquila It does not matter if you use your creature to attack or block. In both cases the creature with first strike does it's damage first and then if the other creature has enough toughness to survive, it will deal it's damage to the creature with first strike. Example. Your opponent attacks with a 3/3, you block with a 3/1 first strike. Your opponent's creature dies and the first striker lives.
cheers!
am i allowed to mix 2 different types of editions together in 1 deck??
Yes you can, the "Format" you are playing determines exactly which editions are legal. Examples of formats are, Standard, Modern, Commander (also known as EDH).
You are? Great! thx the this really helped
What about double strike
This video does not tackle all static abilities available (there are too many). Double strike is simply First strike and regular strike together.
