Budget MTG Decks
All magic fun, all cards under a dollar
We here at Budget MTG Decks love playing constructed Magic: the Gathering! Whether it’s EDH / Commander, standard or modern, duel or multiplayer, we can’t get enough of it.
Our vision of MTG is a game which encourages strategic thinking, social interaction and above all…fun! To make this accessible to everyone we decided to lower the two largest barriers which people encounter with this game:
1: Cost of building a Magic deck.
2: Complexity of building a Magic deck.
Our mission at Budget MTG Decks is to provide full deck tech videos describing ready to play EDH / Commander and duel decks. With in depth commentary on each card and overall play style. To make sure the decks are truly budget we have limited the price of all our cards to under a dollar (with exception of the commanders). Now everyone can join the Magic: the Gathering fun!
This is the best Magic tutorial on UA-cam all the others don’t show what actually playing the game looks like
Thanks for the kind words :D
I agree!
As a new player, the combat step has been really confusing for me to visualize. Your video was of fantastic help, and I feel like I can play this game with confidence.
Thank you!
Glad we our video could clarify that for you icarus212001. And keep playing, the game only gets better with each passing year ;).
Having been a gamer and role player and writer for many years, I have never played MTG! My daugher bought me a starter set for Christmas so I found this by far the best beginner tutorial here! Top marks!
What a sweet gift! Hope you and your daughter have a blast playing Magic together! Let us know if you have any questions!
i haven't played magic for 5-6 months about to head out to my first game store in a hour and without a second thought i came straight here. I said it before and will again, you do such a amazing job at breaking it down
Thanks for the kind words! Hope you had a blast at your game store ;).
I'm extremely grateful to you for playing out a few turns and showing us how the turns flow. It's much less confusing than it seems. This will be my go to series for any confusing
Happy to hear that! Let us know if you have any further questions!
Fantastically clear. Thanks so much.

Thankyou for your clear, easy to understand, comprehensive tutorial. Your time and effort put into making this is much appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to let us know! We also appreciate it ;).
The only thing I was confused about with MTG was turn structure, and you answered every question I had. Much appreciated!
Just picked Magic after a 15 yr brake. This video is genious and really helped. Thanks guys, keep up!
That's awesome +João Azevedo, welcome back!
This was THE BEST how to and demonstration video. Really appreciate it, great work!
You are too kind!
Thank you for explaining, it was very clear! I started playing MTG over a year ago but have not played much, I am here mostly for the combat stage tutorial 👍 thanks David
My pleasure!
Best tutorial I could find!
Happy to hear that!
As a new player in Magic, this video helps alot for me to understand the basics of the game especially the visual presentation of how it looks like when you play. This is great! Thanks man.
Thanks for taking the time to let us know!
Easily the best MTG introduction series on YT! Thank you!
Thanks for letting us know!
Hey, thanks :) and n/p! I'm an absolute noob, only just got my first few welcome decks and everything seems intimidating - and your series prbbly actually really is the only one around explaining all the basics in the most basic possible way so that anyone's gonna get it. Peace! And greetings from Poland!
We were all noobs at some point :D. Let us know if you have any questions!
Very detailed Excellent tutorial Subbed!! :)
I’ve just gotten into MTG recently and the 10-part tutorial did help. I just need a starter deck to get started.
Happy you found it useful. Let us know if you have any questions still.
great tutorial bro love it
Thankyou so much for explaining this so clearly! :)

So good!! Thank you so much
Happy to be of service!
Good video. Thank you for this.
Good as always!
Thanks Dromega1gaming!
5:00 So mana that gets tapped to summon a card from your hand can be reused to attack in the same turn? Can it be reused during the same turn in any other ways? So far this is the best tutorial I’ve seen
Still a great tutorial, even a decade later !
Hi Budget MTG Decks! Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I was a big MTG player in the mid to late 90's. This helped understand some of the changes that has happened since then. Do you have a website I can purchase from? I don't use Facebook
love this vid, im thinking of picking up magic as this helps greatly.
Yeah! +neojng this is music to our ears :D. You will not regret picking this up as a hobby...we guarantee it!
Budget MTG Decks thanks! played my first few games using some pre built decks i bought and used these guides, helped massively! Now to build my own decks! though not sure where to start as there are so many packs and expansions that i don;t know where to start! haha
+neojng yea same here!
I'd like to add that I'm now fully hooked, i've done loads of drafts and even the prerelease events for SOI, i also have a bunch of decks! And this is where it all started! haha
This is really helpful, thanks
Glad to hear it was useful to you +Matthew Donaldson
Questions
Can you draw at the first turn
Can you call enchantments sorcery and etc (stuff other than creatures)
Do you pay the manna at the top right of the card to attack
How do you attack your opponents life
1) You don't draw if you go first, only subsequent turns 2) What do you mean by "Call'? 3) The mana cost of a card is only to cast the card, once it's on the battlefield you can attack and block for free 4) You attack your opponent and if they don't block the creature the damage goes off your life.
+Budget MTG Decks thanks dude I already know the answer to the second question one last question
how many coloums of creatures. and lands can you summon (idk what you call it)
No sweat, you can summon any number of creatures and play any number of lands. There is no limit.
Thanks
This video was verry helpful
Thanks for letting us know ;)
Rip sanctuary cat
First of all, this is a great tutorial! I have a question about the first and second main phases. Can you cast a land and a spell in the first main phase, and then cast another land and spell in the second main phase in the same turn?
Lands: No. You can only play one land per turn (and it has to be your turn). If you play a land during your first main phase, then you cannot play land during the second main phase of that same turn.
Spells: Yes. You can cast as many spells as you wish during your turn, as long as you have enough mana.
Great answer by Robert.
very clear! thanks for the video....btw...what music did you use....it's so calming...
Glad you liked it! It's a long time since we made the video so we don't remember but I think it's a free song from Incompetech.
Question for ANYONE. I need clarification desperately on lands, and just how many I “may” play. I have cards that say I can do multiple things on my “turns” (not turn), & “you may play the top card of your library if it is a land card”.
First card is not confusing, but the base line which will build to my questions, and my needing clarification to an example that will follow soon.
First card is Courser of Kruphix
Play with the top card of your library revealed. You may play the top card of your library if it is a land card. Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you gain 1 life.
When you mix these other two cards in on a battlefield is where my confusion happens.
Next card is Oracle of Mul Daya
You may play an additional land on each of your “turns”.
Play with the top card of your library revealed. You may play lands from the top of your library.
“Turns” - What are these turns that this is referring to? I thought I had only one turn. How do access these “turns”? When/where are these turns found at? The gentlemen on this video said you have one turn, and can only play one land per turn.
The last card is Dryad of the Hysian Grove
You may play an additional land on each of your “turns”. Lands you control are every basic land type in addition to their other types.
So what happens in this scenario? If I have all three of these cards on the battlefield and my library shows multiple lands in a row? (Let’s say 5 lands on the top of my library that I haven’t seen, except the top card is revealed.)
How does this play?
Do I get 3 additional land cards, because each card says you may play the top card of your library-Courser 1st, you may play an additional land on each of your turns-Dryad-2nd, You may play “lands” from the top of your library-Oracle-3rd?
Or
Can I play all 5 land cards at once, when the library keeps revealing land cards?
Or
Am I only allowed to play one additional land card this turn, leaving a land revealed on top of my library that I can do nothing with (until my next “turn”)?
Wow.. This is extremely similar to Hearthstone so far. At least I'll have some way to reference how to play Magic. :I
+Aiko Kagayaki (TehEpicKitteh) Magic was the first of its kind, all CCG are based on or inspired by Magic. It feels like more strategy than luck compared to Hearthstone. I quit Hearthstone, just shy of spending real money.
+Ace Ventura Yea it's like yugioh and hearthstone combined. I'm loving it.
i only played yugioh and pokemon when i was kid. never learned magic till now. im amazed at how much both pokemon and yugioh borrowed from MTG!!!
So once a card is summoned, it doesn't require manna to attack?
That is correct. You only need to pay mana to "buy" it after that it can just attack and block for free.
what is the maximum number of lands you can have out at one time?
Thanks, these guides have been very helpful
Hi Bilbo, there are no maximum number of lands you can have on the battlefield. However you can only play one per turn (unless a card says otherwise).
Budget MTG Decks okay. Cool, thanks for the quick reply!
I know this video is old bur I have a question.
The Nightpack Ambusher gives a bonus of 1/1 to its tokens, making them 3/3 tokens as long as the Nightpack Ambusher is in the battle field. If the token and the nightpack ambusher attack, but the nightpack ambusher suffers lethal damage, will the token deal 3 damage to my opponent or 2 damage? From what I understand the nigthpack ambusher only leaves the battlefield after all attacks happen, so the token remains a 3/3 untils the end of the combat phase.
so what I meant was like before the 60 like this stack of 60 that you play like can you choose love cards I have like a bunch of good cuz I think could I possibly put them into the deck before hand
Yes +mystic lov, you can take an existing deck of 60 cards and swap out the cards you dislike for the cards you like and make the deck better.
NICE
I am new to mtg so quick question:
What do you do if you don't get a land in your initial 7 cards?
We recommend that you mulligan. Mulligan: to shuffle your hand back into your deck and draw a new hand minus 1 card. So in this case you would draw 6 new cards. If you do it again you would have to draw 5 new cards etc...
what decks do you guys play I play black white
is it mandatory to play a land in a main phase? what if we dont have a land in the hand at that turn? can we skip that step? or if we dont want to play a land, can we not?
question: what does dammage assigment? lets say breaker of armies attacks and ammong blocking creatures is a zulaport cutthroat(whenever a creature dies you gain one life target opponent loses 1 life), does the dieing of creatures happen at once or with the assigment one by one? (sorry for bad english)
No problem +Koen Beeckman, your question is very clear. All creatures see each other when they die or enter the battlefield at the same time. So in this case Zulaport cutthroat see's itself and let's say 3 creatures die. So the opponent loses 4 life ;).
Hiya, i wanted to ask, what happens if you don't get any lands in your hand? What are you supposed to do? And i don't necessarily mean the first turn?
You may choose to mulligan your hand before you start the first turn of the game. A mulligan is when you reshuffle your hand into your library and draw 7 new cards. For each time you mulligan you do need to discard a card before you begin. So if you mulligan once you start with 6 cards. Twice with 5 etc. Remember you can always mulligan regardless of how many or few lands you have.
Can someone answer a question for me. If you have tranquil expanse and you put it down. Are you only allowed to use it once and then it goes to the graveyard or can it be continually used as long as you tap it on your turn? My son and I are debating.
Hi Linda, when it comes into play you can't use it (because it already enters tapped). However in subsequent turns you can use it once each turn.
Hi, if I have a creature with 5 damage and my opponent blocks with a 2 toughness, does the remaining 3 damage go to my opponents life total?
The decks arent suffled befor a match?
How do you start out with mana is it luck , can you choose the first 7 cards or what is it?
It's luck, you just draw the top 7 cards of your deck.
Hello! I have a question about my opponent's turn. If I have an instant, can I play it during his or her's turn? Also, can I play sorcery or anything other card during my opponent's turn? Thanks!
Hi +Matthew Almendras, you can cast an instant or a card with "Flash" in your opponents turn. All other spells must be cast during your first or second main phase.
Thank you for the video I'm just getting into magic there are a lot of card shops around and Magic players the community is nice and there are new card shops popping all around from where I live in Missouri St Charles and like I said the community is good, but in some card shops the magic players can be real dicks.
We understand that some members of the community can be unpleasant to deal with +Jared “STL” C. Our only advice is to make a note on who has a negative attitude and make a point not to play with those people. Or you can teach people you already like to join you in playing magic!
Thank you for the video. what to do whit the creatures thad do not tap¿?????????????
i see the other video. i have other question, creatures tap, can not block??
Hi Joel, correct. Tapped creatures cannot block. That's why creatures with vigilance are handy. They can attack and block!
Thank you, Thank you,
Quick question, where do we put discarded cards when we have more than 7 cards?
They go to the graveyard. This is the case for all situations when you have to discard cards.
Kinda miss the upkeep and what if I'd like to block one creature with e.g. two or more creatures?
The upkeep is not important for new players learning how to play the game. In the combat tutorial video there should be a section explaining how blocking works with multiple creatures.
I have a question, is there a limit to the number of creatures you can have on the battlefield?
+Kristen Bautista no limit
So you dont have to tap the land cards when declaring an attack?
No, you only tap land to cast spells.
How come the bear can attack that cat? I thought it can only block? What kind of pokemon battle is this?
The bear is defending, so when the cat attacks, the cat will also get hit from the bear's power. It's like a mini battle.
If someone has creatures on the battlefield and their opponents attack is that person FORCED to block with one of their creatures or can they decide to let the attack go through to their health points?
It is always up to the defending player if they chose to block and how. They may indeed let the attack go through to their health points.
hey can you pick it cards before hand?
Hi +mystic lov, could you please elaborate on your question? We are not quite sure what you are referring to.
Can a creature who was just summoned defend from attacks?
If a creature attacks and survives, can it defend on the other player's next turn before it gets untapped, or does it loose the ability to defend?
Only untapped creatures can block.
What is the program you are using to play on line?
We don't play online, we do all our playtesting in paper.
Why did he keep skipping the second main phase? Just because he didnt have anything to play? Also what happens when you run out of cards in your hand? Do you draw bacK up to 7?
Does every card's life is restored at the end of each turn ?
That is correct. Technically all damage is removed from the creature.
Question:
In the 2nd main fase (@7:12), you have 3 lands untapped. Would you be allowed to cast another creature onto the battlefield during the 2nd main fase?
Also, are you allowed to cast multiple creatures in one main fase, if you've got enough mana to do so?
Yes and yes. You can cast all spells in both your main phases and are limited only in your mana with respect to how many you can cast.
Thanks for the reply! One other question I have is what i should buy to get started with magic. There aren't any stores nearby that give out starter packs and i kinda want to buy a bit more than a planeswalker deck. I heard that people don't recommend the deckbuilder's toolkit, because you need like 3-4 of a card to build a solid deck. Is there any truth to this?
What would you recommend starting players to buy?
That depends on what aspect of magic you want to get into. If you want to open packs and build decks with your friends using a limited card pool you could each get a Deckbuilder's Toolkit because you also get lands. If you want to start with balanced duel decks you should each get one of the Planeswalkers decks. Lastly if you want to have fun competitive decks have a look at our deck tech series for Commander or Modern and order the singles needed to build those decks.
I'll definitely need to learn more about what sort of decks are good and which aren't. So if I understand you correctly, a planeswalker deck is a complete deck ready to go? No need to take out cards or to order land cards?
That's correct, a planeswalker deck or duel deck or commander preconstructed deck is a complete deck in a box. You don't need anything else to play. Although we highly recommend you get sleeves to keep you cards safe and facilitate shuffling ;).
can you cast a sorcery after you attack?
nvm
How come the card goes to the battlefield and not the stack?
if you can't attack on the turn you summon a creature, why don't you just summon creatures into the tapped/horizontal position?
Creatures that are tapped are not allowed to block for you, so you wouldn't be able to block somebody's attacks if they were to attack you during their turn.
Because creatures with summoning sickness may still block +Jeff “Days” K.
what if you if you block a creature with the same attack and toughness as you?
If you block a creature with another creature with identical attack and toughness then both creatures will kill each other as long as the attack is higher than the toughness. eg a 2/2 will kill and die to a 2/2 but a 2/4 can block and live against another 2/4.
U can only use one creature per turn right? and one sorcery per turn?
You may cast as many creatures, instants, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts and planeswalkers as you have mana available +ShayanRougeGaming. You are only limited to playing 1 land per turn.
but if i have like 3 cards with mana of 4 and i have like 4 forests and they all cost 1 forest and 3 any lands can i put them all down and play them or put them and then flip the lands and only choose one card to attack with??
I think things may be getting mixed up +ShayanRougeGaming. If you have 4 forests on the battlefield (not your hand) you may tap all 4 to pay for 1 card which costs 1 forest and 3 of any color (4 total). Now you may not attack with the card the turn you play it as it has summoning sickness. If you want to play all 3 cards you are referring to in one turn you would need to have at least 3 forests and 9 additional lands (12 total) on the battlefield.
oooh ok so i have to have like 16 forests to play all 4 that cost 4 mana and btw if my creature does lets say 10 dmg and his creature that he decide to block with has 1 health do i just do 1 dmg to the creature and the rest to the player?
Yes on the 16 forests for the 4 (4 mana) cards. With regard to the second point, your 10 damage creature does all the 10 damage to the 1 toughness creature and 0 to your opponent. The way you describe would only happen if your 10 damage creature has the ability "Trample'.
is there a limit on how many creatures can be summoned
No, your only limitation is the mana you have available to cast those creatures.
What if someone has a 6/6
And attacks
I block with a 1/1 does this mean I get 5 damage to my life points, or is the attack snuff by my 1/1 entirely
See trample. Will still deal 5 dmg if a card doesn’t mention trample then yes all dmg is avoided.
What program are you running to play magic like this?
We don't play magic like this, we just edit the cards in a video editing program to show how everything works.
+Budget MTG Decks Oh cool, thanks for letting me know.
Frehz you can play on a pc with magic the gathering online (MTGO). It's a client to play games of magic with digital cards, it's good because you can play whenever you have some free time and feel like playing magic but there is also the added cost of maintaining a digital collection as well as your paper collection.
Combat Beginning and End are not actually "phases", right?
So I completely understood this tutorial and that’s how I played my combat phases at first. But then I see these cards that say something like “This creatures can’t be blocked by more than two creatures”...That confuses me, if creatures can’t be blocked by more than two creatures as it is anyway. Correct ?
A single creature can be blocked by as many creatures as the defending player chooses. However a single blocking creature can't block multiple attacking creatures.
Ahh makes sense.
Should I read the 200 page MTG rule book, or watch all of the tutorial videos?
That sounds like a rhetorical question to us! :D
Budget MTG Decks omg you actually responded
How many cards can be in your library?
A standard deck of Magic the Gathering is 60 cards +Sam. However there are different formats with different requirements, limited requires 40 cards while Commander uses 100 cards in the library.
+Budget MTG Decks Awesome, thank you!
So creatures are spells? Because i play against some of my friends and one has an enchanted card that makes it so that with each green spell any player casts he gets 1HP, this is overpowered but with 1 nuetral mana cost, is this because its an old card or because creatures arent spells.
Hi Axel, yes creatures are spells. The card in question Wooden Sphere is hardly powerful, neither is the more powerful version Staff of the Wild Magus. Gaining a few life per turn should not be much of a problem to deal with. Otherwise you could always play Naturalize.
Can we block a attack with 2 creatures
Yes you can block an attacking creature with as many creatures as you like.
can you defend with a tapped card?
You cannot.
I commented this before moving on in the series, thanks
Can u send me. A goblins guide and a lava axe
Sorry but we are not a store and as such we cannot sell you cards.
What app is that? Is it on PC, android or apple?
Hi Kay, this is just edited pictures in Adobe Premiere. It's not a functional version of the game.
What happened to Upkeep?
We don't talk about upkeep because it is not a relevant phase for new players. We find that Upkeep confuses new players too much because there is actually nothing to do there in 99% of the time. If they have a card that says something about the upkeep than we can explain it when it becomes relevant.
what if you dont pull out any land cards for the first few turns?
Then you are what is commonly refereed to as "mana screwed". I.e. you are screwed because you don't have enough lands to play one every turn. (The opposite is "Mana flooded" where you only draw lands and can't play spells early game).
so you arnt garrunteed any land cards at the start of each game?
That is correct. That's why it's so important you put enough lands in your deck. To make it statistically most likely to be able to play a land every turn.
What would you like to know?
do you start with 7 cards in your hand
At the beginning of the game each player draws the top 7 cards from their library and begins the game.
Budget MTG Decks thanx i just saw you replied
i wanted to know what you could play on the OTHER GUYS turn :(
Instants and creature abilities ;).
Thanks, can i use them on anystep of their turn? lands and spells are restricted to my turn then i take it.
Where do I get this game
The game is played with cardboard cards which you can buy in a game or hobby shop +HarveyHD Dove. Just ask for the game Magic the Gathering. You can also buy the cards online.
So why dont you draw a card if you're the first to start a game? Seems weird if you both roll a dice and you win.
Because you have the advantage of being ahead of the mana curve. However if you win the roll you can choose to go second if you prefer.
how many cards are in a deck?
Sealed = 40 draft = 40 standard = 60 modern = 60 commander = 100
so if i wanted to make a deck in 2017 to duel with my friends i should have 60 cards in it?
I would first agree on a format with your friends so you are using the right cards. We would recommend you start with some simple modern decks. Here are some cheap but fun options to start with: ua-cam.com/video/pq6QZhR78ms/v-deo.html
can your opponent see your hand?
No
What about upkeep
We don't discuss upkeep here yet. For new players it is a phase which is seldomly used so it's best to skip it for now.
Budget MTG Decks cool cool played for years was just wondering but great vid and suggestions on a tourney i got tommorow in standard would u give your option on which deck i should run for todays meta?
@@boondockingbrawlersandtalk1975 unfortunately standard is the one format we don't really dabble in as the cards rotate out so we find it very unfriendly to budget players :(.
Budget MTG Decks not really i have a mtg channel and budget build decks for 70 bucks and under and. My subs took to fnm and ........maybe ya just suck
@@boondockingbrawlersandtalk1975 Maybe we do, but our few subscribers seem to like what we do.
wait why did the bear heal it's self?
At the end of every turn (clean up step) you remove all remaining damage from creatures (healing them back to their original toughness).
so..you're telling me, if you could, just to take the mick, you could cover almost your entire half of the table with the cards!?
You sure could!
@@BudgetMTGDecks bloody hell!
Can you defend with a creature with summoning sickness?
You sure can.
Budget MTG Decks Summon Zombies with cryptbreakers and they can block as well? That and if a card like Voldaren Pariah transforms after it's played on he field can it attacl immediately or does it regain sickness? New player building a non-budget UB Zombie deck.
Got the concept from budget mtg. 3 mote liliana the last hope and the main is finished.
Hi StoicCrane, you can create a zombie token and block with the zombie token, but not with the Cryptbreaker as it had to tap to create the zombie token (tapped creatures can't block).
Transforming does not mean it enters the battlefield again an so does not regain summoning sickness.
Where did you get this concept from you say?
mtggoldfish.com
Budget MTG Decks I asked around on Reddit what was the best way to get into MTG and they advised me to bite the figurative bullet, make a high Calibur deck that seems interesting, learn how it plays, customize as see fit and dominate my locals to gain access to a wider variety of cards by winning packs as a return on investment.
I mentioned to say good not love
