Yep, most faction has a cavalry unit that is stronger. Chivalric knights, Templars etc. would be the strongest for most western factions. But, it would look kind of boring tbh.
I think best units should be divided between Missile Infantry, Melee Infantry, Spear/Pike Infantry, Cavalry, Missile Cavalry (if the faction has them) and Artillery
I remember expanding as England and Milan starting a war on me. I knew crossbows have a nasty armour penetration but by Jove did they favourite them! But haunting? Not quite once you have decent cavalry and artillery. And they cannot light up siege towers either. I find they're a tad over-celebrated for a unit that's considered a nation's special one. Retinue Longbowmen, now there's an archer unit for ya that can make any enemy rue attacking you!
HRE Gothic Knights are just a meme. They look good but they don’t work as intended since the launch of the game. If you want infantry you go with Imperial Knights, but the strongest unit in the roster (and the strongest cav in the game) is the Teutonic Knight (also super iconic and famous). For Venece you can’t take a generic crossbow, they have two of the better units in the game by far. One is the Stradiots and the other is the Heavy infantry, you play that faction only to get those two. All the rest is fine, you can argue a few, but it’s good enough. 👍
Oh yeah I forgot about those French Lancers, definitely not the best cav of France. You can make an argument for Suiz Pikemen, or the Heavy Crossbow unit (I don’t remember the exact name, but you get it), there’s a lot of better options for France.
Lancers have full plate armour useful in all angles. Shield armour is less useful for that matter. Yep their crossbowmen aventuriers or smth like that is the best crossbowmen as an infantry, but I thought a heavy cavalry fits medieval French image better.
@@GOGPlays yeah, but for some reason they lose badly against other cavalry of similar prize. They are not bad, just underwhelming and far from cost effective.
Reiters sounded more reasonable now. But, I felt like Gothic knights are more famous for HRE. Portugal would have the same with Spain then. They had conquistadors too. I wanted to show unique units even it's not the best actually.
I was bored once so I set up a 'No Rules - Unlimited Money' multiplayer match in Medieval 2. My opponent picked a Western faction and showed up with a balanced army. Meanwhile I brought just a spam of one unit... Elephant Artillery! I absolutely destroyed the poor soul before he could even charge.
Unit stile 10/10, and yeah they are super cost effective. About being “hands down the best non missile cav […]” they are solid but definitely out of top 5.
Norse War Clerics are made to kill enemy heavy cavalry and general's bodyguard, they sadly do not have lances and aren't as good against infantry, they are however worth every penny, since Denmark do not have much anti-cav units besides the late game Swordstaffs and Halberdiers.
@@simonredion4417 It doesn't matter that they don't have lances since in melee they kill the most cavy units in the game and GBs too, because they have maces (AP weapon) and that makes a big difference. They're also good at melee agaisnt infantry if you do the charge prev
The Byzantines' best unit is Vardariotai. It's on par with the best Mongolian horse archers, and it's available on turn 1 from some of the castles. The Byzantine Guard Archers are also a very solid infantry unit for castle defense. The Byzantine sword militia is also good just for being relatively cheap and reliable.
Sadly the conquistadores can only be recluted in America,so you only get them at the end of the campaign. Spain have other cool units though (like knights of Santiago and tercios pikes)
HRE - Reiter, there wasn't anything including elephants that I couldn't stomp with them. Denmark - Norse War Cleric, one of the best melee cavs in the game.

Okay change the title of the video, because these are very much not the strongest units in these individual rosters, from neither a campaign nor multiplayer perspective.
Gothic knights are incredibly bad in practice. Their stats look good, their armor and weapon looks amazing, but they spend all their time blocking, they have no shield, they get shredded by melee units and crossbows alike. They lose to almost any kind of unit and they do not perform like their stats say they should. Try them out in custom battles against pretty much any mid to late game unit, such as any cavalry you wish, any missile units you wish, most 1 handed sword infantry, see the result. It's bad, isn't it? These guys look so amazing that it breaks your heart. Note, I do see the video description, I know the claim isn't being made that they're the best. But man, I gotta warn folks who don't know about the 2 handed bug, it nerfs this unit hardcore so they basically just stand there mostly stuck in the blocking animation instead of completing an offensive swing. Now, they don't have bad defense but if you stand there only getting hit and not landing blows, eventually some hits kill you and you kill very little before you do. It's sad. You can see them do okay against a light cavalry unit in melee, not charge, and it's fine, and they can probably carve up most missile units in the game in melee, but you can do that with just about any infantry unit.
Yep, sounds reasonable but those are more iconic. If we included all the expansions, Ritterbruder should be the best. They look both dangerously cool and frighten enemy infantry.
