Also, its position offers a safe expansion route to Africa, crossing southward to Tomboctu (rich and safe from invasions, perfect for economy building construction) and a straightforward path to the Holy Land (route goes: Tanger, Algiers, Egypt and Jerusalem)which helps by not going on a crusade and taking a single region isolated from possible reinforcements and surrounded by enemies.
I mean, the Turks and the Egyptians are quite easy if you think that from very early on you can recruit awesome horse archers and basically conquer the whole world with 10 units and enough patience. Moreover, the starting positions are amazing and full of free rebel cities to conquer, yes you can get crusaded, but defending a siege where you have plenty of time to organise is actually fun imo, even 3 enemy full armies are quite manageable as they will be composed mostly of garbage pilgrims and similar sh*t. The Mongols are a bigger problem, but if you build towers in your cities you are fine, as long as you know what to do
For new players, the Turks and Egypt are complicated, but for seasoned players, they are excellent and a lot of fun. Jihad is so broken - you only need a rank 2 imam to kick one off, so if you're clever about it, you can be on jihad for the majority of your campaign; lots of money and strong morale for your army. Fun thing I found out about the Mongols: if you do autoresolve with a full army of infantry, you beat the Mongols. Even with crap infantry units, you can still autoresolve beat the Mongols since TW:M2 values infantry against all other units.
Egypt is justified for being hard 99% of time you are target for crusades and also turks are absolutely bonkers early oh and also egypt being a good faction struggles is one of the worst factions to go against mongols
@@shadownight9956 Yes, Turks are a pain-in-the-buttukus. However, as Egypt, like any other Muslim faction - you can jihad on turn 1 and build out an empire. Crusades can be tricky, but being Egypt, you can build up a fleet and sink 'em at sea or bait them into seiges and sally out. A trick during sieges is to march out your army to just in front of your gates, then take your general(s) run em up the flank until your behind the enemy general and repeat charge them. As long as you retreat just as your generals bodyguard slams into the enemy general, you should be fine. For mongols, by the time they show up, you should be conquering the last of any territories and usually they dick around in the desert for a bit. On top of that, if you have a full army of infranrty, doesn't matter what type or quality just as long as your infantry army is bigger than the mongol, you can win in autoresolve. LegendofTotalWar has a strategy for doing it in battle, using forts, but I tend to stick to autoresolve.
Actually France and England , both have access to Powerful Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller . To Spain and Portugal , this two faction can access to Powerful Knights of Santiago
Milan's "Might get invaded by France early on" is hilarious when you compare Italian Spear Militia to just about anything France can throw at them pre gunpowder
Guys don't play the original. Play the Stainless steel mod with the historical improvement addon. Better AI (e.g. clever cavalry charges), pikes actually work, beautiful textures, historical names for factions, and some extra economic features
They're one of my top 3. Iberia is easy to conquer and, as you say, Timbuktu is a literal gold mine. 4 merchants on the gold and ivory will bring in the income of a small city in addition to the mines, and the AI never sends merchants down there to do takeovers. In my most recent game as them I was naval invaded by the Pope after destroying Portugal and Spain, so while one army annihilated their attacking army I sent a second by ship and sacked Rome. Sold it to Milan, who had been my faithful allies from very early on. It seems the only way to keep Milan from betraying you is to befriend them as someone they should logically hate - Islamic warmongers.
Roster is garbage however. Highlander Axemen are good and mass producible and can put even feudal knights to trouble but lack decent armor however. Archers are terrible in a skirmish, lacks late game knights, and pikemen are good only as an anti cav unit and lacks flexible role other than to stop a charge. When I played Scotland, it was indeed their geography which was their saving grace, it fun and satisfying after winning, but it's one faction that I don't wanna play again for fun.
My favorite faction is The Sicilians. They have very good military units and have a vast space to expand between Italy, North Africa, Greece and surrounding areas. Furthermore, I find their relationship with the papacy interesting where, with an alliance and military access, you can have a certain advantage over your Catholic neighbors. Long live the Normans of Sicily!
They're my favorite too, and their position has a lot to do with it. Grab Florence and ally with the pope right away. Expand into Orthodox and Muslim territory to get rich, get crusader knights, and become the leading Catholics by converting those territories. Wait for the other Catholics to strike Florence so that the pope is more upset with them than you, then grab their territory until you make the pope upset. Go back to expanding in Orthodox and Muslim lands until the issue with the pope has blown over. By the time the Mongols show up, you'll dominate Italy and North Africa. By the time the plague arrives, you'll have most of the Mediterranean!
My favorite faction is Scotland on vanilla and especially on Stainless Steel. The goal is to excommunicate England by provoking them to attack a nearby city (like Edinburgh or York) by having a few units but make sure to use pikemen on either city walls or city square to decimate an entire stack in defense. Take the offense by taking Ireland and swinging from west to east with London as the last area. Build up military and economy (it's best to replace most highlander units with heavy militia pikemen/noble pikemen (use 6 units in an army), and make sure to have many archers to counter your lack of mobility). They are extremely OP in stainless steel as they are strongest pike faction and they can recruit welsh longbowmen.
StainlessSteel mod has terrible balance in terms of unit rock/papper/scissor being rock & scissor beats everything, with Calvary and pike being over powered & archers being severely nerfed.
My favorite faction is the Moors. I really love their starting position and units, their Christian Guard is by far the best Knight unit and the Camel Gunners are just too goddamn good.
I like both England and Venice. England's longbows with stakes make them perfect for countering Mongols; plus they get access to some cost-effective units like Demi Lancers, Armoured Swordsmen, Bill Militia and (if you're not succumbing to campaign fatigue) Culverin. Venice is a powerhouse both in campaign and MP: they can recruit the strongest melee infantry in the game (VHI), joined by a plethora of good militia units like Pavise Xbows, Italian spearmen, decent archers, and, icing on the cake, Stradiots (a unit so damn strong to get banned from MP battles). Besides, my first M2's playthrough began right from Venice.
I remember initially finding Byzantine to be tricky because later versions of MTW2 allow Sicily and Venice to launch amphibious landings at pretty much any province you own, which resulted in Venice and Hungary striking Greece while Sicily and Turks would fight me in Anatolia. Later on, I just adopted a strategy of letting the enemy take Greece while I focused all my offensive armies to push into Asia. As long as Constantinople didn't fall, it would be fine. Constantinople is actually pretty easy to hold indefinitely.
Byzantine Empire in my opinion is very hard...not only do you have to deal with the Turks and the eventual Mongol invasion there's Sicily and Venice knocking on your doorstep and splitting your forces to west and east only for Hungary to come from above
I got tired of the turn times and frequent battles in SS 6.4 and went back to Vanilla. My favourites are Portugal and the Moors, for two flavours of Iberian conquest, and Sicily migration to Antioch and conquest of the Holy Land. Strangely, I've played hundreds of hours of M2TW since it came out and I've never gone more than 3-4 turns into a Holy Roman Empire campaign. I just don't like starting off that big.
Turkey as very hard is curious. The Jihad is available right at the start and you have basically unbeatable horse archers and a secure eastern front until the mongols arrive. You can take down the byzantines very quickly and from there you're free to roam around.
The Byzantines have the best horse archers in the game, and they can be recruited on Turn 1. The Mongols and Timurids are a real threat, but you can defeat their armies if you avoid even fights and stick to sieges and river battles.
Nah i do well with scotland easily. My biggest beef is how when the pikemen get attacked by infantry, they just drop their pikes. I heard of a mod where they keep the pikes down like in Rome 1 or 2 and they dont instantly turn to swords. That would make scotland OP as fuck. Like a medieval macedonian phalanx.. Macedon is op in Rome 2.
Fixing pikemen is easy. Check out the channel 'To Nerd is to Human' ... he has a short video explaining how to fix the pikemen (basically you remove their second weapon).
Personally I think any faction with large borders to multiple other factions has a riskier start than others, since you risk being challenged to grinding multi-front wars. This is especially risky if you aren't catholic or get excommunicated, though I admit I might have bad luck there
Scotland is actually giga easy, you can crush England away from their island in a few turns because their starting armies are really bad. :D Buy some merc´s and ur done in like 10 rounds with england. :D
This is an awesome vid! Generally agree, though, it maybe neat to do a companion video breaking down the factions for new players vs seasoned players. Turks and Egyptians can be hard for new players but for seasoned players, they are so broken. Jihad is a broken mechanic and can make any of the Muslim factions unbelievably strong, really really fast. So, for newbies, yeah, Muslim factions can be tricky, but for season vets, Muslim factions can be the easiest and strongest due almost entirely to Jihad.

If you wanna feel powerful, Venetian all the way, all their army is effective and their army have all cheap effective options, except mounted ranged. Egypt is superfun, since countering crusades brings very unique playstyle. I wouldnt call it very hard, borders are quite easy to defend, there is no other threat than crusades and some Timurids late. But Franks, i dont find easy, coz you are surrounded by 4 christian nations, that needs bit careful politics. I find Poland and Russia most challenging, since all regions are rather poor, and army is bad until you are far in the game.
