- Another UA-camr recently made a video where he makes a mistake about the rules of classical music and dissonance. Here's what that mistake was and why it's WRONG!

To offer an example (depending on how we define "classical" music), Bach's "Prelude in C Major" (WTC1) is a gorgeous treatise on delayed resolution.
Voice leading is everything. Pops up over and over again
YES!
And of course, there are different degrees of (perceived) dissonance as well... For me anything m7 or maj7, even with "odd" bass note, doesn't sound nearly as dissonant as anything that contains a tritone. Great video!
Real cool stuff ❤️👍👍
😮
Is it bad that I could hear the 3rd and 4th chords in the progression before you even started writing them down or talking about them, even though I couldn't name them?
What would be bad about that? :-)
I feel a bit stupid but .... "what is a dissonant chord"?
In classical music, anything that is not a major or minor triad is dissonant. In Jazz, you usually consider min7 chords and maj6 chords as consonant (but different people have different opinions here)
@@MusicTheoryForGuitarThanks SO MUCH for taking the time to reply to me :) :). I appreciate it.
I dont
The romantic and post-modern periods would probably disagree. How about all the PAC’s “Le Sacre du printemps”?👀
Disagree with what exctly?
Feeble attempt at sarcasm, sorry. I chose two broad cross-sections of works that prove the fact that tension can be prolonged through a series of dissonant changes.
@@Bubba-zu6yr Oh, I see. Well, I agree with that! :)
I think I'll stick with Arnold Schoenberg on this one. 😅
"On this one"... which one? :-)
He wasn't known as The Great Emancipator of dissonance for nothing, especially with his use of unresolved six-four chords. In his words, "The movement latent in it is not great enough to compel action and may be ignored."
Another broken New Years Resolution, I see ...
"Do You NEED To Resolve Dissonant Chords?" No. There, I saved you 9 minutes of your life.
0:55 I once thought I made a mistake, but I was wrong.
3:33 Instead of a Gmaj7, I was considering a Bm7(/F#) . But that's not the Circle of 5ths.
4:15 I like the sound of major 7ths on their own, thank you. 8-)
