Frequently asked question: "how do I write a great melody?" Oooh, that's a good question, wouldn't you agree?
Great melodies are what attract most people to music, And in the history of music, the musicians that are most remembered, imitated, and admired were all masters at forging melodies.
Now, I would like to have an answer to that question ('how do I write a great melody?') that will fit into a UA-cam video. Writing melodies is a very biiig topic after all! There is no way that watching one video will make you a master.
And yet, here's what we can do together today to make your melodies better, if not great:
We can have a look at a couple of melodies from the masters. I'm going to pick two completely different kind of musicians: we'll take one melody form Mozart, and another melody from the jazz/world music/jam band Snarky Puppy (if you've never heard them: they are awesome)
We can take these two melodies, and see what they have in common, and especially see how we can take what we learn from them and apply it to our own melodies.
If two kinds of musicians so far apart in time and style use the same trick for their melodies... it must be a pretty good trick!
If you like this video, share, like, comment & don't forget to subscribe for more content!

The prog metal guitarist plini uses this exact idea all the time. Everybody loves his playing and he literally said the only thing I do is play things one note higher than you expect.

This is SUPER cool and has a million applications. I've never thought about it like this but adding the circle of 5ths to this concept will result in awesome ideas and sounds!

I automatically do this with most of the riffs I learn through the key or mode. Then often do the same riff through different modes. It's a great exercise and really helps with familiarizing with the key/mode (7 positions for diatonic and 5 positions for pentatonic etc). It's more difficult but also a great idea to do this all in one position too.

Beethoven's fifth symphony is a good example of melodic motifs played in various pitches

Another thing I like that reinforces figures is playing them over different harmonies so they mean something else, I wonder what someone better at melody than myself could do taking the figure in basic position, then picking maybe 2 more like in Mozart's example, and also really exploring what can be done with relationships between those and the chords.

It's true, we guitar players don't use that usually cuz it looks just too easy but well that makes me feel better about it.

Harmonising guitar lines with other guitars or any other instrument (including vocals) instantly makes that line sound composed/intentional and more intelligent - a simple looper pedal is great for working out harmonies 👍

Years ago, I came up with a melodic bit that was played on the G and B strings and would occasionally move up or down 2 frets. It produced something rather hypnotic, but since I didn't really pay attention, I could never do it again.
If you sequence like this, then you'll find yourself working in a whole tone scale.

This is one of two channels I do that on as a rule. The other is Guthrie Trapps channel. Here I learn more about music theory, there I go back to basics in the more traditional styles I somewhat neglected as a kid on my way to fusion and neo-classical (blues, country, jazzy blues, bluegrass). I prefer the way they both teach each subject so differently too. The whiteboard for theory and traditional guitar music on the guitar itself.

People don't sequence enough in a lot of music, but at the same time Yngwie has been around for ages so I'm p sure most shred guitarists have at least one point of reference there.
I'm surprised you didn't link in leitmotifs but I can see you're making this for a certain audience so mebbe you didn't want to go overboard.

È una tecnica già ben nota ai musicisti galanti, tanto che la troviamo già nei partimenti di Riepel con il nome di “monte” e “fonte” (rispettivamente, ripetere un frammento melodico un grado sopra o sotto)

This is all over Final Fantasy 7's boss theme: ua-cam.com/video/U84zAfb4b58/v-deo.html
Nobuo also switches back and forth between minor and blues in the main riffs in a completely transparent manner that got me thinking about how you can use harmonization around parallel keys to write more complex melody.

I find it really hard to harmonize a melody. I might be able to do it at the very beginning, but then it gets off.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 роки тому +1

Harmonizing diatonically is done most simply by switching positions. Play your melody say in the first position, then in 3rds would be the same riff in the 3rd position (or for a melody in the 2nd position it would be harmonized in 3rds by playing it in the 4th position etc).
Basically you can use the technique he describes in this video for that. Fifths are almost always the same as a power chords (but sometimes will work diatonically too) and so of course are the octaves. 7ths, 9ths etc work the same as figuring out the 3rd harmonies.
It's slightly more complex (but most often sounds better) to harmonize within the chord. Say your melody over an A minor chord is just: A C E. Then it's just the next inversion of the chord: C E A. Or the next inversion: E A C.
      Hope that helps. ^-^
Edit: If that doesn't make sense, then it's time to work on learning all the positions of your scales and inversions of the chords. I highly suggest learning the positions the scales first, because then the chord inversions are much easier to see.

Hi Omar. If you want to harmonize a melody, here is a video that shows how to do it straight on the fretboard (no theory 'calculations') using the 3-notes-per-string patterns. The link starts at the beginning of the explanation (ignore the rant before): ua-cam.com/video/YdE2gV54pfY/v-deo.html

      Off the top of my head for guitar starting on the 4th string 7Th fret: A E D C A C C G A E
The first E being a fifth above (9th fret 3rd string), then working down to the lower E note (7th fret 5th string).
Maybe, lols. Not really sure how precise that is, but my guitar is not nearby.

I may not have made it justice by posting only a short excerpt (then again, UA-cam won't allow me to post long excerpts...) The part I posted is one of the most chromatic parts of the solo, and it really makes more sense in context. Give it a chance and listen to the original.
