Many Canadians - and I am one - want our unconditional grant of birth citizenship to all comers to end. Canada already accepts enormous numbers of immigrants every year, more than we ever have in the past. It isn't hard to emigrate to Canada. As things stand now, anyone who can get themselves here in time to give birth get citizenship for their kid, no questions asked. This law is blatantly abused. What's more, it blatantly favours foreigners who have a lot of money, which is terribly unfair to families without wealth. Birth tourism to Canada is rampant. Agencies in China and India in particular are paid high fees by rich birth tourists for quickie flights to Canada, stays in private hostels, and births in public hospitals - often at the expense of Canadian taxpayers. Once the baby is born and a birth certificate and citizenship is secured, Mom & child get on a plane and fly straight home. The kid grows up as a convenient anchor baby, a free ticket to a new life in Canada for the whole family in case of economic or political problems in their native country. Even if this scenario doesn't play out, the kid is able to come to Canada as a student, complete with free medical insurance, and provide the family with a conduit to buy property here. This is a racket and an abuse of the spirit and intent of the law. Most affluent Western countries no longer allow unconditional birth citizenship. It's time we did the same, and require children born in Canada to have at least one parent be Canadian in order to qualify for citizenship.
So basically you can come to America and my tax dollars will pay for a non-citizen to give birth. Then your child gets to become a citizen and compete for what should be set asides for Black Americans… and in fact then call themselves a Black American. Meanwhile my family has been on this soil for 4 centuries, and built the place you want to come to and still have yet to be repaid. This bothers me deeply. This is not an indictment of Nigeria at large but Nigerians that come to America have often done so at the expense of Black Americans (Freedmen) already here. Colleges and universities, jobs, media use you to replace us. I don’t think I’m better than anybody but the sacrifices of my people need to be honored and this does not help. Why would you want to come here anyway, why not built the home of your lineage? I would love a world of free borders where none of this matters. But the thing is… if it didn’t matter you wouldn’t come here in the first place. America is only the land of opportunity bc others can immigrate here and immediately use Black Americans as their step stool. And they do so without actually knowing or honoring the history that has allowed this to happen.
Do you feel the same way about white Australians, Asians & Europeans that give birth in the US? How is your tax-dollar paying for her to give birth, when healthcare is private in the US?
