- This week, I go through my clothing system: base layers, mid-layers, footwear and outerwear that keeps me warm on cold hunts. Also, learn about a new line of outerwear that I really like from Code of Silence.

Those bibs are going on my Christmas list for sure. When Jordan gets her gear lined out ask her to do one of these, my daughter is a lot harder to shop for than I am, there is lots of gear for guys but getting gear for her has been difficult. She likes the box blinds, so that helps as I can find or make black garments. But its hard to shell out $200 bucks for a men's small jacket she complains does not fit well. She has some military surplus women's Polartec heavy base layer jacket and bibs I died black, and that she likes has worked in the blinds, and is cheep enough to have a couple sets to rotate. And sometimes likes it so much she will wear that GI Polartec with camo sweats over the set for stand hunting. But its not really a good outerwear for her that sheds wind and rain.
Bibs are hands down my favorite piece of hunting clothing. Really enjoying the format of these videos. Looking forward to future content.

I use the jersey gloves too, their awesome, and you’re right they keep you warm enough.
Another great video Bill! I like your approach to keeping your feet warm. I and so many treestand hunters struggled to keep warm feet. A couple years back I decided it was time to figure it out. Here is what I cane up with. I wear sandals on the drive to my hunting spot. Upon arrival I put my alpaca wool socks on and my crispi summit gtx warm weather boots. When I get in the stand I loosen the laces then put on boot covers from artic shield. This works excellent for all day sits in the 20s. For late season I wear my Hoffman pac boots.

Excellent video from years of experience. In North Idaho, the mountains are steep and brushy, so we have to do a lot of hiking to get to good mature deer on public land. Wool seems to be the most quiet in the brush but I wish the packs were quiet. I use a down parka under the wool when I get to a stand and a down 3/4 length Feathered Friends down bag. Most of our hunts are from the ground as packing in a tree stand is really tough. Deer tend to be migrating from summer range to winter range during the rut and you never know where they will be because of weather and snow level.

Great and beneficial information! The problem I run into with multiple layers is drawing my bow. I have an athletic build with fairly large arms and the jacket sleeves are not large enough in most XXL jackets for me to add 3 or more layers most jackets just bind my arms so I double up on the vests and do less layers on my arms; but I still get cold sometimes.

That Cabelas ECWCS top is modeled after military ECWCS cold weather clothing with that waffle fleece lining. For more affordable base layer options, used military surplus stuff is the way to go. I use quite a bit of it in the late season. However, for the early season, First Lite and other companies make similar waffle fleece garments in camo patterns that are great when things start to cool off in the evening. Its funny hearing you talk about highs in the 20s - with my maximum layering system I managed an hour and a half in -10*F in an open tree stand last December for my last archery hunt of the season - it is possible to dress warm enough to get you through a hunt.
Layers are incredibly important and something keeping wind off the skin. I’ll never forget hunting when I was a dumb 24 year old late season bow hunting on a cut corn field with highs in the teens and lows were 0 with the stand on top of a hill with 10-15 mph winds... when you get that cold you get miserable really quick
Mr. Winke I really appreciate your authenticity. I believe you are 100% who you are in these videos. You ain’t trying to wear the latest and greatest state of the art most expensive gear on the market because it cost $552,000 dollars. (I want list any names) I appreciate you being real. Your gear proves to me once again you are a true bow hunter. Bibs are a must in the archery world. Leaving the arms free from resistance. Great video. And once again I believe you are the real deal. Bought a heater body suit for the real cold and snowy days. Their actually quite nice, you can slip out of the upper part for a shot very easily. You step into it with your boots on too.

You turned me on to the Cabelas ECWCS base layer, great stuff. Those Cabelas Sasketchewan boots are on my purchase list for next year.
I also don't get fully dressed at camp or when I leave my vehicle, I'd be to sweaty by the time I reach my stands. Guys at camp do, don't know how they do it. Great video

I used to be like the Michelin man when I dressed to hunt cold weather. I finally invested in First Lite gear and it’s made a huge difference. I like the Marino wool because it wicks moisture, stays warm if it gets wet and won’t stink.

@@paulcrave3112 There are a couple big companies you can buy alpaca stuff at.
Appalachian Gear Company makes an EXCELLENT hoodie/long sleeve crewneck called All-Paca. Its the only shirt I've been able to find that was 100% alpaca. It is my highest recommendation BUT they consistently have stock issues and depending on the size and color you want it can be very hard and extremely frustrating to buy from them.
PAKA offers a wide variety of stuff, but all I have gotten from them are their sweaters and one pair of socks. I liked the Pacas socks I got better, but the sweater is one of my absolute favorites. I love my sweater from them, but it is only 50% alpaca and their other one with the most alpaca is still only 65% alpaca. Great quality and it seems the company is doing good things for native people in Peru, but it is a little pricey for most people.
Pacas is another big company. I like their socks, I haven't tried anything else from them but they have sweaters, hats, and scarves in addition to socks. I think they seem the cheapest of the big options, but alpaca is never going to be "cheap".
Arms of Andes is another option. I have some base layers from them that I really like. No complaints, just like PAKA they're pretty expensive.
Another option I'd suggest is looking for local alpaca farms. We have one nearby and they offer a lot of great items. I have gloves and socks from my local one and they are great quality. I'm sure if you look around you might find some near you. You can also look at fairs and craft shows sometimes people sell there.

I think that you have to hunt whenever you can but when it warm, I do think the mornings are better. Good luck.

i do the same light going in but I don't like to mess around at the bace of the tree so I putt all my stuff on in the tree...but great tips brother..
i used to have i think it was called a body suit,,? it was like a sleeping bag with shoulder straps. As for staying warm it was the best. I fell asleep in mine a hour before daylight in a stand one morning when it was close to single digits. Gave it to my little brother years ago as he needs it more than i in central Ill.
I think I still have one of those. They are called Heater Body Suit. I used one in Manitoba deer hunting one season. I was hunting dawn to dark in the stand in late October and it was chilly by the end of a long sit. Those things really do make a difference.
I used an ozone cleaner on my clothes and boots last year and when I put my boots on this year the rubber toes just crumbled apart. I won't do that again.. I bought those Elimatrax boot covers you talked about last year and they work well. Alan.
I thought this was a great explanation of your layering system. Thanks for that. As for scent control… how often do you wash the various layers? As for me, if it doesn’t touch my skin, I will air it out overnight and wear it again for many sits as long as I don’t get it soiled or sweat water up. I appreciate your efforts Bill. Thanks again!🎃
What I do is wear sweat pants to the field when I get to my spot I have a pair of snowmobile pants I put on they are wind proof rain proof and they are super warm and then I put on my ski jacket that is super warm and I can still pull my bow back never have any issues I put hand warmers in my gloves and hat also have in my boots I am always warm with no issues. Especially when it is really cold.

To truly stay warm in bitter cold, you cannot beat the Heater Body Suit. Sit all day in single digit temps and truly stay warm.
Exactly. It’s the only way I can make it for long sits In Northern Wisconsin now. I now bring coffee also. I’ve been thinking of getting a Milwaukee heated vest and wearing mid weight camo in. I dress in the HBS as soon as I get into the stand and buckled in. It’s extremely difficult to do on the platform in the dark lol, but worth it!
A couple seasons ago on November 1st it was zero degrees and snowing. Finally at 10:30am they started moving and at around 1:30 the big dawg finally appeared. I would not have ever made it without that HBS.

Any discussion on heated insoles and heated vests? I bought some well rated items off Amazon that are worth every penny.... along with a 37k power bank 👍🏼
john ager, old danner sales manager told me years ago, buy your cold weather boots 1 size bigger and your feet will stay warmer. also scent will over spill out the top of rubber boots.
That blue European base layer is the best ever, I have two tops and two bottoms I treat them like gold. If I remember correctly they make gear for North Atlantic fisherman and for awhile tried providing to electric utilities that how I got mine.

How is Sizing, looking at the bibs and heavy jacket. 20s up to 40s with slight Wind is what I'm struggling with. California mtn We don't get many of those days till late season but I'm never prepared. Never have used bibs, also just never confident on jackets. So looking to you for some Insite. - Jp from Cali. PS! One did come in on that Sit we talked about with me staging Very close to Private down/fence, no shot but great experience thx for the nod.

So i use under armor “ coldgear” baselayer … it has neoprene liner to wick moisture , and it works gr8.. i dont know if they still make it…
Great info Bill, One question, how do you pack all your outer wear in? Just in your arms or do you stuff it in some light weight bag?
Bill you ever tried a electric vest? I have a 60 dollar Chinese vest off Amazon and a milwaukee battery that will last 6 hours. Keeps me plenty warm all season in the stand.
That’s just a recipe for disaster, what happens if it catches on fire? Electric & Chinese don’t go good together in the same sentence lol, just saying.
But whatever works for you, that’s all that matters.
A cheaper, lighter, and more effective foot option for me is to buy some boot blankets and some wool power 800 socks. Wear light, breathable boots to stand, then take them off, drop a chemical hand warmer in the boot blankets and pull them tight at the top. Then use a foam seat cushion to rest your feet on.
That would work too. And definitely much cheaper. How are they to stand in when getting ready for the shot?
@@bill-winke I haven't had a problem with them from that aspect, but you do have to make sure you aren't standing on the hand warmers weird...after a while that can get really uncomfortable. It will feel weird when you're used to boots, but it hasn't hampered my shot. The foam cushion is also important for both comfort and keeping the metal stand from sapping the heat from your feet.
I usually only do that when it's really cold or I'm sitting out for a long time. Shorter sits regular old boots are fine.
I totally agree about not constricting your feet, the #1 biggest thing to keep your feet warm.
Love the videos Bill! Question for you: What are your thoughts on planting chestnuts vs oaks for deer? I am thinking of planting a bunch on our farm since the deer seem to love them and they yield so much sooner!
Thanks Jim. For sure chestnuts are better for small areas where the focus is deer food. I have about 30 acres I need to turn into long-term permanent habitat so that is why I am planting acorns. I will put in a few chestnuts in select spots later. Right now I am just painting the background of my painting.

What would you wear to the stand in cold temps when your light shoes/ sandals aren't good enough? im wondering i should wear my harness under my jack. I always wear my harness on the outside of everything. Is it just preference?
Really like the look of the Code of Silence jacket, but it looks like a cocklebur nightmare with the exterior wool. Can anyone confirm? Would much rather buy this than First Lite.
Do you wear your baselayers in your truck? I'm always afraid I'm adding foreign odors to my baselayers from my truck
Great video, Bill! What pack do you use that you can carry your heavy layers?
I tie them in a bundle with a short piece of rope and throw it over my shoulder. Much simpler than trying to mash all that bulk into a pack.
Great information Bill. It took me a few years to figure out layering system especially into late winter. Regarding changing boots, do you bring the walk in pair up the tree or just leave them at the bottom?
Put them in a plastic bag, roll up and bury in the leaves at the base of the tree.

Code of silence, surprising on the cost, very reasonable imho.
Especially when compared to other brands (First Lite, Kuiu, Sitka, Under Armour, etc.)
I still have the old Cabelas scent containment suit. I haven’t used it in years. Do you think it helped you or was that project a bust. I gave up on it because it seemed like it didn’t breathe at all. But if it helps I might use it again for some aggressive moves. I’m just curious what you think about it. Thanks.
I wore out two of them and would still be wearing one if I had one. Ev Tarrell who owns Code of Silence was the guy at Cabela's that designed that with me. We are talking about doing another one someday. It works, for sure. Not 100% but it does contain odors. Its strength was the fact that it was not breathable. It held the odors in and wind out. I felt like the simple lightweight garment eliminated at least one bulky layer underneath because it was 100% windproof with no cold spots (coverall design). Good luck.

My question for you Bill regarding the code of silence clothing. Does it come in tall sizes such as large tall or Xl tall ?
I am 6ft and 2 inches about 215 lbs and struggling find a good fit.
I have spent lots of money on high end brands promising to be a good fit, but they weren't.

Thanks Abdullah. I appreciate it. I was wearing tall sizes in the jacket and the pants. Ev had them made specifically for me, so I assume they will be in the line for 2023. The insulated bibs were not talls but they were OK. I would have liked them a bit longer, but I am 6'5" so maybe they would fit you perfectly. I think the stuff I wore (pants and jacket) would have fit you well. Keep an eye on the line to see if they have the talls this year. Good luck.

I’m interested in the bibs as I am a big fan of cabelas wooltimate but they no longer make bibs in the wool. One question, does the main zipper have a two way zipper?
Jack, I don't have them here, they are at the farm. But I don't believe that main zipper is a two way. I think it is only from the top down and back up. By the way, Ev was probably the guy that created the Wooltimate line at Cabela's. He was the main apparel person there for a long time before going out on his own to start Code of Silence a couple years back. Good luck.

Yes, for sure. When it gets windy you really need something windproof or you will freeze. I have worn cheap, thin nylon jackets under my outerwear to accomplish that in the past. Good luck.
Heater Body Suit has windstopper fabric. Wind makes no difference.

Question for Bill. Do you have the Code of Silence Zone7 versa hooded jacket? Would you compare weight and thickness to something like the Sitka Stratus? Does the jacket have the slot to feed your harness through?
Thats the jacket he shows in this video. He shows the slot so yes it has one
@@dustydee880 He has the code weather gear which is a different set. It probably does have the slot though. From what I have read though it's only 25% wool. Probably gonna pass on that setup.
@@michaelcooper9537 I like Sitka, but everybody and their brother near me wears Sitka and I like to be different. I’ve got Drake Non Typical, Under Armour Rut Scent Control, and just recently picked up The Verdigre set of Code of Silence. I really like the Code of Silence and it’s kept me warm so far, even with my base layers underneath. It’s a 100% Wool Exterior. I’d highly recommend.
@@michaelcooper9537 He is showing the Zone7 versa hooded jacket. He is mistaken about it being the warmest one unless he has a model not available to us. If you go to their website the jacket in this video is the zone7 or looks just like it. The warmest is the parka and has 2 upper chest pockets and 2 lower pockets that are accessed more vertically. I too was hoping for more wool. Both jackets look warm and quiet though.
@@dustydee880 I had a pair of Sitka Stratus pants. I ended up buying a Stratus jacket instead of wanting to sell the pants and chance a new outfit.

Code of Silence is the brand of outerwear he showed. I think it’s made in the US though. I didn’t hear him say it was made in Europe.

What is cold is relative to where you hunt. For me 30-40 isn't cold, it is balmy. 10-20 is cold.
That's true. Also 30 degrees feels a lot colder in October than it does in December.

We will see how tough I am in the next week. It is supposed to be pretty cold. My tolerance for cold definitely has decreased as I have gotten older though. I don't like that.
