- Land Rover Discovery LR4 Ultimate Off Road Trial. Baboons Pass Lesotho, Southern Africa. Part-1
Can a luxury 4×4 actually go off-road? Can it really do what the manufacturers claim? I set out to find out how well one could drive off-road and set up what I considered to be a very tough test for any 4x4, let alone a stock, luxury SUV. Land Rover's LR4 Discovery is not a soft roader, and should not be compared with apparently similar SUVS like Audi Q7 or BMW X5. Because Discovery has real off-road equipment built into it. And those others do not. Firstly, it has good clearance, and not only good, but ample clearance given its adjustable ride height. Secondly, it has low range gearing. Take any one of these away, and gone is most of a vehicle's ability to drive off road. But the LR4 is also a really comfortable town and country car. It's spacious, practical and safe. But is it any good off road? I mean really? Advertising sales speak besides. How good is it? This is the ultimate test of the Discovery-4, done over three days, over Southern African’s roughest public road - Baboons Pass, Lesotho.

To me it looks like my 05 Escape. Boxy. Love the old school SUVs.
Im on the edge of my seat waiting to see you tackle that road in the LR4
Love it, was curious how the LR4 does off-road, can't wait to see the second part.
Hi, I have an LR3 and it's totally fantastic, in fact...this is my second. I could never go back to driving a regular car on the road. 7 years an LR3 owner now and love them to bits. LR4 in a years time and sooo looking forward to the latest model.
I heard from couple sources that they are killing off LR4/Discovery4. They got "Discovery Sport" which is really LR2 replacement not real Discovery/LR replacement. Well I guess I will be holding on to my LR4.
LeeROBD No, The Discovery model is hugely popular and wont be killed off anytime soon. But, Land Rover have killed the Freelander and introduced the Discovery Sport which is "by looks" a larger Range Rover Evoque.
@@Baron-Bagaten Land Rover lost their way IMO, My day car is a Disco 1 and my expedition and workhorse vehicle is a Defender 90. Both brilliant for their designated duties. Nothing in the current model range would suit.
I love your videos reason because you are honest....... that’s it great work
This set of 4 videos is v. good. Production quality excellent. For the content there's maybe a touch too much on the technical 4x4 stuff IMO but I love the observations on Lesotho and on the camping. Amazing that one can do the pass in a SUV although I wouldn't trust it on a long expedition because of the sensors and electronics.
Wow beautiful children lover!!!
SUPER 👍👌 AUTO !!! ✌️😎
Superb video Andrew. Thanks. I have a Shogun (Pajero/Montero) but would love a Discovery 4.
Watching this I am starting to plan going to SAfrica for some 4x4 wandering ))
Thank you for the awesome video and inspiration!!!
This guy should present Top Gear
400.000+ km on mine LR3
Engine runs like a baby.. maintenance is more expensive than Jeep but after having both Commander and LR3 at the moment as family cars i came to the conclusion to sell the commander.
The ride quality in the Land Rover is far more better. I would buy it again and again and again..
P.s. i originally bought the commander to sell the LR3 and avoid the high maintenance.
id like advice or your thoughts on a used LR 3 LR 4 please .. ps love your videos.... ive always loved them but scared of the repair bills even on a seemingly good history car
Brillant Video!
Episode-2 DIscovery LR4 ultimate test is now up. ua-cam.com/video/-WMnWUC6b2k/v-deo.html
Interesting vehicle, beautiful area and great editing. I enjoy your films very much.
where can one go to hear the intro song?
They are relaxed because you are a guest in their own country, not as an occupier.
The British left in 1965 (57 years ago) and white rule ended in 1980 (40 years ago). So the answer is, no. It's their country and they enjoy the company and the income generated by visitors. They are very generous people.
They are great.....until the electronics fail.
James Hamilton at least it's not a Ram or BMW that burst into flames or Chevy with 800,000 power steering recalls
And now after 158,211 miles my North American spec. 5L V8 LR4, there hasn't been one electronic fail.
@@fredbrackely I really want a LR4 (Jeep GC replacement) what would you say to a 2015? 80k on the clock. $23k
