After many years of development, Shazam has joined the DCEU! Billy Batson gets chosen by a wizard to take on the mantle of Shazam and develops the ability to turn into a full-grown superhero. The movie is a ton of fun, but definitely raises a lot of questions. Like what’s up with the bullies being absolute psychopaths? Why is the villain so generic? Why was it so easy for Billy’s mom to just abandon him? Why was the Shazam family so good with their powers?!
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Shazam! It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience!

The “YOU CAN DO THAT” child abandonment Joke is probably my favourite Pitch Meeting joke. He sounds so shocked to learn about that
Julie Nolke was definitely not on board tho.
@@HariSeldon913 It was worth a shot, though. :P
The face he makes at his wife’s reaction is hilarious!
And the fact that he immediately called his wife to see if she'd be on board. 🤣 I love how awkward that was for Screenwriter guy.
@@premiumheadpats4150 Yeah, the "Super easy, barely an in........".
My headcannon is that Billy being able to be happy and goofy as Shazam instead of his usual moody self is the result of the Wisdom of Solomon.
I actually like this. Wisdom isn't about being smart, which is why he doesn't act like some genius.
Instead it makes him completely aware of the fact that things will eventually work out in his life, so even though times are tough he should enjoy being a kid while he can, as it's only temporary.
The second he goes back to not having wisdom he gets moody, solemn, and can't look past his circumstances to make the best of his temporary childhood.
Idk if we are reading into this far beyond what the writers intended, as idk if this was even intentional, but it works.
also confidence from becoming a giga chad?
@@Amplifymagic it's the same thing.
Orrr just bad acting and directing. It’s not just him being happy. He has a completely different personality. He’s acting more like a hyped up 7 year old, rather than a teenager. It’s really jarring and made the movie much worse.
Dude. Talent.
I'm enjoying hearing Ryan's thoughts on these. Plus the "what will Ryan draw while we're watching the video?" is always an intriguing moment.
It's never disappointing.
SAME!! GOOD CONTENT IS GOOD
It's always a key plot point that the movie involved reduced to a symbol, so I'm mostly excited for his Civil War revisit to see how he draws "Daddy Issues"
I mean, he does tell you what he's drawing at the beginning; not a crazy reveal at the end y'know?
The reaction of writer guy while producer guy tries to abandon his kid is freaking hilarious .kudos
The concern.😂
@@tefweebz it was worth a try, I guess 😂
God, I love Pitch Meetings, and this Revisited series is so cool. Getting to see Ryan's process only serves to highlight how genius he is at clean comedy.
Jeez, why don’t you marry him
Yeah nah. These are just lame reaction vids that every youtuber is doing now. A way to do less work and make more money.
He is a national treasure. We need to protect him!
@Richard Jackman yea yea yea
@@thotsnpreyers why are you here?
As a parent of little ones, I laughed so hard at the barely an inconvenience being interrupted by producer guy calling wife to abandon kid. I haven't seen this pitch meeting in years so the joke was still fresh! I will take my kids to see Shazam 2 tonight but at the drive in for cheap. I love your content Ryan, thanks again for making us smile and sharing more of yourself with us! would love to talk movies with someone like you
I love Ryan's trend of drawing absolute masterpieces while we watch absolute masterpieces and then he talks about those absolute masterpieces
Master-ception!
250 masterpiece likes on a masterpiece comment mate
Man, that joike about calling his wife to suggest abandoning their kid almost made me wake up my own kid with my laughter. Killer, totally forgot about that bit.
@@schattentaenzerin I mean I suggested it to my wife, but she was *not* into that.
@@schattentaenzerin And then your kid will become discount Brightburn and bash your heads in. BTW, is there a Brightburn pitch meeting?
This has always been one of my favorite Pitch Meetings of all time. The characters are perfectly balanced and their entire attitude is so hilarious.
“Maybe you should, you know, pick a thing.”
“No”
“Well okay then”
This is my favorite PM moment ever 😂
Same!
Chefs kiss.
I love that the first one of these Ryan honestly seemed a little tired and definitely unsure about doing this series. Looking much better and more confident and having fun now. Love to see it!
The more unhinged Screenwriter Guy and Producer Guy become, the more hilarious the pitches are
My absolute favorite part of this Pitch Meeting is when producer asks if he could keep the tone the same and he just throws his head back with a goofy smile "no".
Yeah, it would be better if he'd make more masterpieces though. This is just milking old clips instead of making new ones...
Oooo saying "no"
Is tight!!
@@jacco_por He _is_ making more pitch meetings. Just not quite as many quickly after oneanother. To keep burnout at bay.
So, if you want more new pitch meetings, you might also want to help keep Ryan from burning out. And also, no one is forcing you to watch these revisit episodes and a ton of people are enjoying them, so I'm rather sure Ryan will keep making them 😊
Question: Was there a pitch meeting for a movie so controversial that you canceled or almost cancelled?
Ryan posts, I click, watch and like. It’s super easy, BEARLY an inconvenience (shout out Cocaine Bear). Also that “abandoning your child” bit was hilarious, producer guys facial expressions absolutely made the scene
"Cocaine Bear Interobang!"

The fact that writing these episodes only takes you a single day is extraordinary. Your talent is surreal.
I love the eye thing …. It really is a branding thing. I see the eyes and immediately go, “Oh! Alright, Pitch Meeting !! This will be fun.”
Don't you mean, "This will be TIGHT!"?
@@matthewpatrick7263 you’re right!
I love that he doesn't just republish old content but adds to it and provides insight. Amazing.
This is my favorite Pitch Meeting. It cracks me up every single time he’s like
“Shouldn’t you pick a theme”
And writer guy just says
“No”
1:48, actually the Wizard being by looking for Sivana but rejected him for being unworthy and then went through an entire plethora of different people all of whom he rejected (presumably for being unworthy) to the point where Dr. Sivana outrightly tells him that no one can ever pass his worthiness test and notably the Wizard doesn’t subject Billy to the test which he made Sivana endure implying that having a champion to defeat Sivana supersedes concerns of worthiness
That's something I thought was really cool about the movie. It was just like "this whole premise is bogus because nobody is pure & good is a choice you make."
@@TheLithp Yeah. That’s one of the best parts of the movie (and it has a lot of good parts).
Yeah I honestly feel like he skipped over chunks of the movie on purpose to gain stuff to criticize, kinda dumb but it's an old one anyway
@@-Teague- I can accept it when people like Ryan George (or Honest Trailers or CinemaSins) take license for the sake of comedy, I’m just not a fan of it when they’re treated as serious criticism
@@matityaloran9157 yeah that's a fair point. I just really like this movie so I'm a bit salty 💀
Is there a movie (or movies) that you don’t want to make a pitch meeting for because it’s too good or you enjoy it so much? Keep up the great content!
i think rrr is the one
Still waiting on that Dune Pitch Meeting
I wonder if he shares the same sentiment as CinemaSins "No movie is without sin"
He made one for the first John Wick but admitted that it was such a straightforward movie without contradicting itself that it was hard to find plot holes and that's why he never made more for the sequels.
Love this behind-the-scenes format; it's always interesting to hear about the writing/filming process.
Question: do you film the screen writer guy or producer guy parts first, or does the order change?
What are you talking about? They are two different people
What do you mean, clearly they are two different people...I mean one has glasses
I mean, even if they’re 2 different people, they still need to each go in turn before the single camera.
The producer guy of this series surely is trying to save costs
@@louisroy4911 That is a good point, Producer Guy likes money!
@@andrewwashere82: That is kinda his thing.
I love how Shazam’s main quality in both movies is him wanting to give back his powers to the Wizard because the enemy is really tough lol. What a great character trait for the main character/superhero to have in BOTH movies.
I also like how when Billy and his foster family say “Shazam!” together, everyone gains the powers, but when Hurut and his father say “Shazam!” (which stands for completely different gods yet still spells Shazam) together, Hurut loses his powers and Teth-Adam gains them. Inconsistency is TIGHT!
Also, I like the joke of Shazam! not being able to hear what Dr. Sivana is saying, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense since Shazam! has super-hearing, one of the powers of Zeus. Maybe Billy didn’t know he had that ability, since the movie was about him learning what his powers were, but that ability would have automatically activated as Shazam! was trying to hear Dr. Sivana, but whatever.
You do realize that in the first SHAZAM movie, Billy didn't say Shazam when the kids did so he didn't change
When Teth son was already SHAZAMed...he said the name as his dad did so he changed back to kid mode while his dad got the change
Seems consistent
@@Dishinshoryuken Oh, right, so all someone has to do to gain Shazam’s powers is touch him and say “Shazam!”.
Yep, you sure got me with that little tidbit. I don’t care that Billy was holding the wizard’s staff (that he’d have no idea how to use), it’s still stupid.
@@What.99 if the power is given willingly, they use the command word the power holder picks
This is shown when Freddy used to say "Captain Marvel" to transform as well as when Black Adam lost the word since Billy changed it and stumbled on it while ordering a meal
Not trying to get you....pointing out there is a solid reason for how it works
It's make believe
@@Dishinshoryuken Oh yeah, there’s a reason it works, but I disagree that it’s solid.
The only thing solid is that Teth-Adam’s son is an idiot for saying “Shazam” when his father did, when he could have just shut up and split the power with his father…
@@Dishinshoryuken You know what? You’re right. I rescind my comment about that being an inconsistency between movies. I’ll concede that the transference of power is based on the intentions of the person holding it, but that opens up a giant plothole in the Shazam! movies: if Billy could transfer the power to anyone this entire time, why is he still Shazam!? He shared his powers with a bunch of kids he barely even knew, so he definitely would have given his power away by now to the first person saying they’d take it. We have two movies now of him begging the Wizard to take the powers away from him…
Ryan, this is one of the best Pitch meetings ever :) The "would you settle for much worse" was hilarious
I'd like to see Ryan interview some of his characters.
Especially "creepy name guy" and "dark goth guy".
Ok don't wanna get on your bad side so moving on
The thing I always found funny about him having "The wisdom of Solomon" is that, despite his wisdom, Solomon unwisely disobeyed God on a lotta stuff, leading to his downfall
Thank you for Pitch Meetings! They're incredibly entertaining and addictive and just the right length. Very cool to hear you discuss your approach to these. Thanks again, Ryan.
I really love to watch these pitch meetings. I even prefer watching it before watching the movies 😂😂. Great work you’re doing man
that is one way to feel all smug and superior when you enter the theatre... of your room...
Pretty good wizard actually.
I never watch the movies. The pitch meetings are more than enough for me.
Wow le switch avec dépanneur était inatendu et vraiment parfait. Le I'm looking at incompetense of screen writer l'était tout autant et la sincérité derrière! Perfect. Je suis tellement content d'avoir après que tu étais du Québec, ça me fait renouer avec le contenu local et démontre qu'il est possible de faire du contenu québécois en anglais aussi! Amazing Job! Keep it up.
Well said bud.
One of my favorite pitch meetings! I'm loving the revisiting!
me too, good taste mate!
I'm waiting for the "John Wick" re-visit
You know, the comic timing of the editing is just astounding. Every split second is timed perfectly.
Hey, Ryan. Quick question for you: is it frustrating when people assume that you're only a single person? Like, you're CLEARLY multiple different guys, possibly cloned in a lab. Or maybe capable of summoning other Ryan's from across the multiverse to help with your videos. Don't be frustrated, brother! Your REAL fans recognize how many of you there are, and I'd like to personally thank each and every one of yous!
When i was on vacation in Quebec, i witnessed how Ryan was able to use an ouija board to summon the shapeshifting spirits that help him out
ok, but which one are you speaking to? you gotta specify, like Ryan.005
They're identical twins named Ryan and George.
The You’d is hysterical
There's only Ryan's in this universe, with a few exceptions. See Ryan George's channel
I just rewatched The Last Mimzy. It was cray cray. My favorite catch phrase of yours that's understandably only been used once is "So, what...What is this?". Point Break.
Question: How did you guys get a hold on "Simu Liu", how was it filming with him? And will you do something similar when you reach 400 or 500 episodes?
Not sure how Ryan got in contact with him but it definitely wasn’t hard to convince him to be in the video. Simu had already said before he’s a big fan of Pitch Meetings.
@@vijayanand6650 Yeah Simu's a Buff Geek 👌
Seems much more likely Simu Liu initiated contact.
How did he get Simu Lieu? It was super… You know the rest.
They are both Canadian, there's just one little phone book for the entire tiny population and they all know each other.
After I moved from Quebec to Ontario it took me over 10 years to stop saying "dépanneur" and switch to "convenience store"... good to hear Ryan say it.
It’s a fair critique that billy and Shazam have different personalities. However, it’s possible we’re seeing two sides of the same person. His goofiness and playfulness come out when he is Shazam, he has super powers, he feels confident. When he’s billy, he feels disempowered, vulnerable, puts up walls, and is more pessimistic.
That and I believe some of the comics actually say he's two different people. I think I recall Shazam saying in Kingdom Come that Billy died long ago and if he ever leaves, he won't come back because there isn't anyone to call him back.
Yeah, that's how I interpreted it when I saw the movie. Once he becomes near invincible he's free to reveal his real personality, which is, of course, very childish
@@thatjeff7550 How did Billy die? I don't think you could starve to death being Shazam, and idk how aging works when you technically share a body

Love the pitch meetings! Have you ever considered Pitch Meetings for other media? Like I know it would take longer, but Video Game Pitch Meetings would be cool.
you could call them.... Patch Meetings?
It's a small consolation prize, but there's these if you haven't seen them:

He'd probably need extra people to help with the playing and the writing for a VG Pitch Meeting. For story-driven RPGs, you have at LEAST 20 Hours just to finish the game itself, plus script writing time, and then making videos that would probably be much longer than regular Pitch Meetings. All of that on TOP of his regular movie Pitch Meetings. So if he were to do them himself, he'd probably only be able to do them about once every 3-4 months.
But I'd be 200% Down for this (Or if someone else wants to steal the Pitch Meeting format, but do it for video games themselves)
Wizard joke caught me off-guard, laughed my ass off while people were watching. XD "Let's see that beard game" :D :D
Hey Ryan, I was wondering, how do you decide which movies to do a "Pitch Meeting" for? Sometimes it's recently released movies, but other times it's older ones, when do you decide to do those and why select the ones you do?
I think it's a genius thing you're doing, Ryan. I think I'd stick around for serious film review, too. The creative process you describe is more craftsmanship than genius. George Carlin was the same way. He wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote until he had like 50 things he could rif on, without any big stake in any of them, and he'd whittle down to 20. He could put together a new one-hour stage show in about a month of full-time - and I do mean full-time - work. Your straight take on the movie, plus digesting what's being said about the movie (That's the perspiration part of your process), is an always-amusing snap-shot of the zeitgeist that never disappoints.
I hope you find a way to branch out or at least get a good percentage off your pitch meetings, because you're carrying the outfit, whether it's yours or not.
You've found the perfect vehicle for your comedic gifts.
Request for Ryan:
There is only ONE movie I’ve always wondered how they pitched, even years before these pitch meetings were made.
Human Centipede.
I still can’t believe a studio green-lit that idea.
Will you please make that pitch meeting?
Seconded, I am down to see this pitch!
But then he has to watch it
You know not what you ask
As far as I know the production company that made that movie is run by the director, so I don't think he had to pitch it to himself.
@@elijahadkins6195 this is funny for some reason... 😂
Never thought it would have become as meta as someone reacting to their own youtube material. Yet, she works
I like how the sequel addresses the “wisdom” thing.
U need to be smarty or the smartiest to defeat evil
Just barely, but yeah
Kinda sorta
It really doesnt tbf.
I thought they should make 'Wisdom' introspection, or mature empathy (to better help people) or just lateral problem solving.
Loving the revisited eps, amazing to hear some of the process involved and so much work to give us some LOLs. In a sketch/stunt group I was pretty much the "writer/director/editor" and actor but my friends who where the main 'face' where more recognisable (locally) so I appreciate the effort you put into the Pitch Meetings.
Keep doing these revisions they are great and you deserve to take it easy! Not to mention the added suspense of "What will Ryan draw?"' is guaranteed to increase viewership! Maybe Las Vegas will allow wagering on the finished product!
I've been so interested to know how long it takes to put together one episode of Pitch Meeting. Thank you for putting on so much effort.
I know you’ve probably already been asked to do this, but I would love to see you do a pitch meeting on Everything Everywhere All At Once. Please, it would be amazing! 🙏
YES!!!! PLEASE!!!
The huge eyes was what kept me from clicking the first few dozen times these showed up in my recommended. Glad I finally did though.
Can't wait for the sequel!
The Shazam 2 trailer in Rick & Morty got me super excited:
"Hold on! There's more. Old women are comin'! And they're also in the movie and they're gonna come... and cross... attack... these two brothers."
The inaudible speech joke was made in Kung Fu Panda first, it was hilarious!
I have to admit, the giant eyes are what caught my attention the first time I saw a Pitch Meeting thumbnail in UA-cam's list of recommended videos.
I thought it would be a YTP edit or something.
When I saw this movie, I was in awe at how disjointed it's tone was.
To make these look so effortless and slick takes a lot of time behind the scenes. Always suspected the writing process was the key. A little surprised though the filming is done so quickly even with such tight scripts.
Love the wizard, hope his beard gets longer as he learns magic. I love the revised format, great work Ryan!
Here's a boring comment - i thoroughly enjoyed the breakdown at the end, actually super entertaining, barely an inconvenience =)
Revisiting old pitch meetings is super easy, barely an inconvenience! I love it!
Surprisingly fun to rewatch this with Ryan's little Q/A. Probably the wizard drawing.
This is one of my favorites. Though I think one of the good things about the movie was that it was mostly family-friendly but had a couple of darker moments with higher stakes mixed in. Movies used to do that a lot more and now they seem really hesitant to have differences in tone or intensity throughout.
Be sure to check out Puss In Boots 2 if you're a fan of big tonal shifts like that
Hahahaha the way you pronounced Shazam, killed me XD. At this point... The pitch meeting is getting more and more accurate
Aww I enjoy your little drawings! Also, genuinely interesting to hear how many hours go into these. I'm guessing that you have become a lot quicker spotting inconsistencies and writer/producer shenanigans? 10hours honestly doesnt sound that much considering how much you cram into these few minutes, but I have to remind myself that you have done this more than 300 times now and it probably took a lot longer in the beginning!
“Why don’t you pick just one thing?” sounds like DC viewers. Even after James Gunn, DC is still saying “No”. Love the Pitch Meetings. Can’t wait to see Shazam 2.
I think billy being different as a grown up makes sense since now he can be this strong powerful character and henceforth be more confident and feel like an escape from his life
That was how I interpreted it - he's gloomy because he's been a powerless kid without a family, and then suddenly gets to feel powerful and adult; I know if my moody teen self had the power to transform into an adult with superpowers, skipping over all of puberty and the other things that cause teen angst, I'd be way happier in that form and go back to acting like an angsty teen whenever I wasn't.
It's the same as with Spider-Man and Superman. As their alter-egos, they are more subdued, clumsy and/or less confident, while their superhero personas are confident. Most superheroes, to some extent, are different than their alter-egos.
Good insight
God bless you, Ryan. You make this look so easy. I can’t imagine all the hours of different research you have to put in to each video, then comb through for the best tidbits to put in the video. It must be exhausting, and I don’t blame you for going down to a pitch meeting every two weeks.
Thank you for all you’ve done. Your pain is our laughter (in the most wholesome sense of the phrase).
Have you ever had a response from actors/writers/production of any of the films you've covered? I know Neil Gaiman tweeted once that the pitch meeting for coraline was pretty close to your version
Yes second this question!
Third!
Ryan is my favorite UA-camr by far. That last question made me recall that I actually avoided pitch meeting of a long time “because” of the bug eyes. At the time it was a turnoff. Fortunately, my iPad was on auto play one day when a pitch meeting episode started playing, and I was hooked from then on. Hee friggin larious!
You should try to get some of the actual writers and producers to react to your pitch meetings and let them laugh and maybe explain themselves but also give them some material to critique you back
If any of them would do it. It's highly unlikely Ryan has access to Hollywood writers and producers.
As someone from Québec, I just love when you add some French Canadian slang in your videos, like «dépanneur».
I love your pitch meetings!!
Keep up the good work Ryan!
This is so enlightening. Making these videos seemed like an impossible challenge but now that you explain it, it seems super simple, barely a job really.
0:46, that was a good idea on The Screenwriter’s part
10:07 can confirm, those big eyes are instantly recognizable
I smile every time I see them
Hey Ryan! Your videos always brighten my day, I love supporting your channel so that you can feed your cats. How did you get Simu Liu to cameo on that one anniversary pitch meeting special you did?
Damn I didn’t expect to get dragged in this but I’m happy you answered my question 😂
Hey Ryan! So far i've really been enjoying the revisited pitch meetings. I'd like to know, why do you do pitch meetings for animated movies or series so rarely? I feel like it would be really fun to see more of those.
This channel is the only reason I know what movies are coming out
The preparation time you put in to your pitch meetings really shows through. I LOVE your work!
This was great timing for me. I recorded "Shazam" this past week on tv. Maybe a quarter of the way thru I thought, no way am I wasting my time on this, I bet there's a pitch meeting. I'm so happy.
Question: do you prefer writing Pitch Meetings about films you like or ones you think are bad? I enjoy watching you poke fun at films I didn't like (especially when it's been hard to put my finger on why they're bad)!
Yes, another reference to Ryan being Québécois. Always love it!
Love these Revisited videos. And I gotta say, I have a theater degree, and the idea that you research and write in basically one standard work day....that's impressive. Also....30ish minutes total to film??? Are you doing like Clint Eastwood and only doing one take every time? If so, holy crap!
You must get one of these revisited videos done in the time between ordering a pizza and the pizza being delivered 😮
if the whole video is 5min, filming 30min worth of material implies hes doing on avg 6 takes of each line. great stuff either way
The Revisited format is cool, keep it up man!
What have you against incompetence? If it's good enough for Hollywood, then why be against it?
One thing that I especially love about Pitch Meeting is that they never ruin a movie. You can watch them even before you see the movie and it will only enhance your experience. Ryan has found a way to cover the plot of a movie without spoiling the best parts about it.
Hope this series is letting you recharge Ryan! Love the content but take care of yourself too. Be well
Wow, wow, wow, … wow. I assumed these took a long time but to hear you break it down sounds exhausting. It’s amazing the quality on these is still fresh. Thank you for the best content on UA-cam! New PM days are still the best days of the month!
These are becoming better then the pitch meetings by themselves
Credit where credit's due; That's a dope drawing of a wizard!
I always wondered why the wizard didn't choose the wheelchair kid. I feel like he would be a much more interesting character to get all this powers and Shazam's humor wouldn't feel so out of place.
Hey Ryan, great pitch meeting as always. You can genuinely see the hard work and effort that you put into these. As someone who suffers with severe depression these always come at the right time for a good laugh. 😂😂😂
7:43 not sure if you’ve seen Kung Fu Panda 2, but that film basically did that joke 7 years before Shazam did 😂
What’s brilliant about these is how interchangeable the straight man and the Baffin are. They switch off so often
These videos are great! My question is would you ever post a video of all the bloopers and mistakes you make while filming? I'm sure your reactions would be hysterical
Yes please! I would love to see outtakes also!
The thing about Billy and Shazam being two different people whilst being one person is very easy to understand.
A kid becomes an adult just like that then the possibility is endless (kind of but kids don't know that).
A kid becomes an adult with superpowers...I'm sure the kid would have more fun being a super-powered being than a regular kid.
I absolutely love these revisited videos
I think you would LOVE the original "what?" moment from Kung Fu Panda 2 when Po confronts Shen with his new hat.
4:51, because they’re literal psychopaths who wouldn’t care and honestly probably wouldn’t have been much nicer to him even if he had gotten a superhero to show up
9:17 so Ryan did around 310 pitch meetings and it takes around 12 hours to make one so if you divide the number of pitch meetings by 2 and more math that makes 155 days worth of work to make all of the pitch meetings.good job keep up the good work
Wowowow that's a lot of hard work
It must be very hard to do
A pitch meeting for the original power rangers movies would be funny
I thought it was good to do the Q and A at the end, you are a talented guy, it’s interesting to hear how this works
Hey Ryan, love these revisited pitch meeting videos, but I do wonder how you decide what pitch meeting you’re going to make for the week like whether it’s for a new movie that just came out or for a movie that came out a few years ago like The Maze Runner that you just recently made a Pitch Meeting on, and if we’ll see a Pitch Meeting for The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure?
