- This video is the first of a series I'm doing on spraying the roof and all plastic parts on my own 2014 Toyota Corolla. I had a great time doing the work and it's something I can really be proud of, at the same time as I am protecting all the bare plastics on my car. It's also a massive cosmetic upgrade if you ask me.

This is the first of what will be a video set on the transformation on my own little Corolla where I sprayed the Roof, Wheels, Trims and all Exterior Bare Plastics gloss black. Fair to say it's a massive upgrade and I'm wrapped with the results. Stay tuned for the rest of the videos. Also, the Gunman spray suits should be available in Feb.

Another simple but great little tip i just picked up, mask the underside of the part to keep in place while spraying.

Good job! My dad has a Rav4 and I can't stand how the B pillars are matte black instead of glossy black. Massive improvement on your Corolla, congrats mate.
LOOKS really custom. We used to do that along with tinted windows on new cars back in the 80s makes the top look all one color. We would do a band around the window section and leave the roof the car color Looked really cool.
Definitely learn something new with every video, like reverse masking the plastic door moulds down to the stand.. thanks!!

Good video well detailed.Also people just be careful taking off old plastic moulds/bits and pieces because as it ages plastic gets very brittle and is easily broken.Which can make a simple job more costly.
That's why if is too old,just mask it!!

Shooting a coat of primer on it is a good idea to see if you got all the armoral off of the parts and or any shine in a can stuff that doesn't play well with paint also. Car looks very nice man!!

Cheers mate sand happy new year. I did think about black handles but decided against it because it's usually the base models with bare plastic handles so I thought it would look average.

Hell yeah gunny, spraying my VS right now and all the rubbers and plastics around the window are typical second gen commo spec and all faded out.

I painted my vs cubby about 5 years ago and I painted all my door handles, wipers and plastic trim and the aliminium trim over the doors in black clear over base and it looks great even now. The car is silver and the gloss black just pops. 👌Use a good quality clear and the gloss will last for years...I love that car.

If your headlight lenses are bad I saw a video where it was sanded back and 2K clear was the best performer over anything else including the specialty stuff
Man I wish I could paint like that! Seems as if no matter what I do or how I adjust my guns it will never end up like yours. Been applying 4 coats of clear on everything so I have enough to sand off when I cut and buff
Loving the videos! Just a quick question, why didn't you sand down all of the pieces? What would happend if you didn't sand down the plastic parts and just primered, painted, and clear coated them?

We call it adhesion promoter I have mixed black base in the clear gives you UV PROTECTION. I have even done taillights this way smoky tail lights looks nice and is quite popular.
I was actually thinking of doing that but for safety and vision for those behind me I decided not to go with the smoked lights.
What is a good cleaner if you had a silicone restore product on previously?
Curious how did you safely remove the plastic pieces in this video? I'm about to attempt this in winter time with a grand caravan
we call it wet on wet here in Canada, question I drive a ford escape it has the security pad on the window frame should I just use the candy black like the pad glows after touching it, to what I watch with you painting the candy it seams to have clear coat in it with the colour mixed

I'm pretty sure it's done by manufacturers to save money more than looks but I could be wrong. They just don't last as black here in Aus, few years in the sun and they're all grey.
What about the rubber window trim strips that sit on top of the doors, can they be painted too? On my mk7 Golf they are now looking crap and as you say armour all etc. doesn't really work.
Man that looks awesome Gunny, I didn't think the plastic trim would look right in clear but they look great. Been testing a few clearcoats lately tried the Quartz Crystal Clear and Liquid Glass, maybe it's just my skill level but I didn't see much difference in the finish on either of them but I think the Crystal Clear is easier to use and flashes off quicker. Maybe you could shoot the breeze again on your thoughts for these two clears the same as you did for me on the WoW primer, thanks Gunny, John UK.
Hi John, the biggest difference is the Crystal Clear is a scratch resistant clear so it's much harder to polish. Apart from that I do agree it actually seems to flash quicker but generally similar high gloss top quality product. I wish I could get more of it here in Australia and I do plan on doing a big order one day.
Thanks for the reply Gunny, yeah I'm leaning more towards the Crystal Clear but saying that I also like the Octoral C450, at 20C it flashes in 1minuet but it's advertised as a rapid SR WoW clear so with that you have to spray your finish as there is little in the way of flow out, I'm sure Chris at SGD will help you out with the Crystal mate! Any tips for doing this on the car and leaving it outside overnight?
I have 95 mustang with plastic body parts, Bumper covers and side skirts. What process would you recommend in refinishing them. I will be painting the entire car of course.

The door frames on my Prado are actually covered in a vinyl wrap which has started coming off (mainly thanks to weather shields I removed which someone glued on). It's aluminium underneath. Not sure whether to try and re-wrap it or remove it all and paint directly onto the aluminium.
I guess it's up to you depending on the quality you're looking for, I have a habit of obsessing over those minor imperfections. First I'm like, "I can live with that" then I'm like "damn that's doing my head in". And I just go and fix it. So if it was me I'd strip the stickers off and spray them. Just see if you can get a 2K epoxy primer because that's best for adhesion on aluminium and bare metal.

Great video man. I had a quick question though. If I would like to keep the rough texture of the plastics, is it possible to just clean them, and then prime and paint, just like you did, but skipping the pre-sanding? I'm talking the fender flares and bumpers on a 2005 XC90. I like the textured look, but they have become very faded, almost gray, which doesn't look very nice. I want an almost glossy black finish, but with the original surface texture. Thanks!
You can do that but if it's ageing and has chips and scratches in it, it will look terrible once you paint it, from my experience if it's not in very good condition just sand it flat, prime and paint.

Hey mate, how to get a “plastic” matte look when painting. Got an older car with faded trim.
You could do it by matching the colour to whatever you like then spraying a matte or satin clear over the top
Plastofix 1k from body that i use for General plastic primer said that you cant use it for pp plastic because of delamination, so i found a primer from the same company hb body p334 that its for all plastics, i dont know if it is for all 1k plastic primer but i dont trust them for pp, even 2k sometimes if you Rush it or you have burn plastic pp delaminate.
I have an 04 Impreza for some reason the factory used aluminum trim, then chrome plated it, then painted it flat black. Seems a dumb combination of unnecessary steps when the only trim option was "flat black" trim. One side of my car always faces the sun when parked and the black paint has worn off. How could I repaint the trim on chrome plated?
I actually have a video coming up where I spray over my chrome parts, but best bet is to scratch it up as good as you can, then apply some 2K epoxy primer for best chance of adhesion.

just got a dv1 basecoat gun today, should i be able to shoot hi solids clear ok? or should i just go get the dv1 clear gun
I found it was totally fine for clear, just give it a shot and see what you think. I wouldn't rush out to buy one yet.
I wanted to ask, does this work on rubber trim? on my car, the bottom window trim piece is a type of rubber that can flex
I am not aware of any paint that sticks to rubber

Why not just use direct gloss black? Did you add and flex additive
You'll never get the depth out of DG, it has lower UV protection and on this type of plastic flex isn't necessary, in fact it rarely is. Speak to your paint rep if you don't believe me, thanks for watching and merry Christmas 🎄✌️😊
Is it possible to clean off the textured plastic and spray several coats of high build primer filler to create a smooth finish then base and clear
That's exactly what I did in this video.
@@TheGunmanChannel I thought you sanded them down first? Ive 24 heavy textured plastics on a camper van which will take 2 months to sand lol. I was hoping to plastic seal them then go a few heavy coats of HB primer to avoid taking the texture off then wet sand, base and clear.

But yes you could do if your way as long as you clean the plastic really well fists, then apply a plastic adhesion promoter before your 2k primer. But yeah should be fine.

@@TheGunmanChannel outstanding speakers, could not be mass produced today due to the beryllium domes. The price increases are real, handle them with care. The woofers have a tendency for magnet shift due to the glue aging, so do not drop them. Crisp bright sound, these speakers love high power amplifiers. I have a pair in my garage and crank them. $$$$$. Good tips on the plastic trim , thanks.

Hi gunman, love your videos. Im a hobbyist. NEED help choosing a faster clear gun, lays glass finish. I do completes. My iwata lph400 1.4 too slow. My customers want glass finishes..tired of buffing. HELP NEED FAST GUN GLASS FINISH..THANKS
I'm surprised the 1.4 is slow. I usually use a 1.3 on my DeVilbiss pro lite TE20 and have no speed issues. I did a respray with it a year ago and it came out nice and flat but was fast enough too. I would have a serious look at the SATA 5000 RP1.3 or 1.2 even pro lite with 1.3-1.4 tips, they're more than fast enough.

sata pretty expensive..was looking at devilbiss flg5 1.4 or iwata bellaria w400 1.4..im in US. which prolite seem nice which gun lays flat and which prolite for US. if i choose it.
@@Mr318jones I was actually thinking of recommending the Bellaria, I wouldn't go FLG5, I mean it's a great gun but for resprays I'd want something better
@@Mr318jones and I find flatness and speed are a trade off, the flatter the finish usually means slower gun. Which is why I find the TE20 to be the best in-betweener you could go TE10 or T110 for flatter finishes but they're slower.

The worst thing on the planet is the poxy plastic chrome some car manufacturers stick around the windows. What's worse is they do it on their more expensive models.
Lol yeah but at least it lasts in the Aussie sun. All badges are the same, plastic base with a chrome plated layer.

Keep in mind if your plastic trims fade, just get a heat gun on it to bring it back to new. There is no need to paint over them unless you want to change the color.
