  • Car polishing fails is an area of auto detailing that is not generally discussed. Darren is on location once again as he talks about working on a car that has been polished by inexperienced car polishers, auto body shops, or other impatient, less-skilled guys that end up making a bigger problem when car buffing has been done.
Whether you are the car owner looking to polish your car, or a detailer that now must polish a car, these problems will become a problem for each side of the equation for different reasons.

His videos are intended for audience that knows what they're doing already, if you want to become a weekend warrior, go to ammo nyc, but you may find out he's less experienced as a detailer, and more experienced as a sales man (was his primary career anyway).
If you're an enthusiast and enjoy perfection, you should check out White Details.
Darren is awesome for those who start their business and believe me, he surely saved alot of people (including me) a few hundred bucks with some shortcuts or "warnings" like you see in this video.
      Keep it up darren =)!

This video is a Pre Requisite prior to me performing any "Paint Correction" on your car. People think I am a magician. Uh.... that is dented. I work on many dated vehicles. I am on my FIFTH Decade Thank God! Thanks for the "SPOT ON" VIdeo! Rotary Polishing is a true skill, and a Gift. I have been watching so called Detailers for 55 Years.... they come and go. "Auto Paint Rejuvenation" is a Discipline. Like the Marines, a Discipline.... NO SHORT CUTS. If you use a Tunnel car wash after my job, you just WASTED your $$$$$ GREAT VIDEO DUDE!!! Now I can save my breath!!! Stay Safe! God Bless America!

I've been detailing for 30+ years. There's really no need to tape of stuff like that. just go slow, use a smaller orbit unit around those areas and pay attention. any minor scuffs of compound come off the seals with ease. dab of mineral oil on a MF Rag and a quick wipe off. Done.

Lots of folks here complaining about how long videos are and too much talking. They are short-span attention; missed the point. Mr. Darren taking up his valuable time to tell you something he learned through years of experience. These people completely missed the point of the video: patience, discipline, take your time do it right the first time. That is huge advice no matter your profession.

You are %100 correct about the body shops. I’ve been in auto body for almost 20 years doing body and paint and it’s so sad that the industry is completely controlled by the insurance companies. They dictate the rates, labor time and just about everything else that the shops get paid to do. Very few shops actually care a great deal about the quality of the final product. It’s more to appease the insurance company with volume and short cycle times so they can keep getting more work.

Actually one of your best videos. I do paint correction for a living at a dealership believe it or not. Most of my work is fixing what a body shop did or didn't do. I think I am getting them trained to just leave the damn thing alone and I'll take care of it. Let's face it, MOST NOT ALL body shops are in the fix it business not the make it look great business.

A tree fell on my truck..it got fixed and they painted the entire truck.. when I picked up the truck the sun had already gone down... The next day I saw it in the sun and it looks horrible from buffer marks everywhere... Do u think I should take it back and have him fix it or have a professional detailer look at it.. I've only had it back for a day

  • @Mathewlarge

I know this video is 3 years old however, my guess what happened to the decal/emblem is that they didn’t tape it off while buffing so the compound flew into the Porsche part and then the S was probably damaged it then had to replace it. Probably only replaced the 4 and S......

The worst is when bodyshop guys think that detailers are below them, yet don’t even know what real detailing is aside from the half assed crap they’ve learned in the body shop over the years. Was interested in a car a few years back, and offered a guy some trade work in exchange to get his car a bit cheaper from him. His response was “I work in a body shop for a living”. So what, are you trying to tell me you don’t know what detailing is?

Detailing is my side hussle and I do most of my own work. Those scratches should have been wet sanded and buffed with a DA.
That said, luckily the body shop I take my cars to also does detailing, and their detailer is talented. However, he isn't the one buffing every car and he's no employed by them, he rents out two separate garage bays in the building along with an independent paintless dent removal guy. 90% of their work comes from the body shop. There is an up-charge for the detail services, he mostly does straight detailing, custom paint work and higher end cars after paintwork by request. However, since he's been doing this for 20+ years, he teaches the labor help proper techniques. He's the one that got me started and sold me some equipment and tools. It's really a great shop! It's "win-win" situation. The body shop is able to have a talented PDR and detail guy right there, which helps with their business, but also the these two get steady work and don't have to market themselves as hard. Oh, they also have another guy that comes by twice a week that does custom paint protection film installation. He uses the detail bay and is close with the detail guy.
Oh, they're also NOT a direct repair facility, which is where you see most the garbage work you talk about.

Body shops vs insurance adjusters UGH! I used two body shops, the first one replaced a door, beat the paint off the jamb hammering on a pin, the paint was an awful match (not even close). First the trim flies off the window, had to take it back for repair. A month later, the body putty blistered up while the car was in the driveway (poor workmanship). The door was repainted and came back a different color. The paint was never finished down to match the car (must have used 800 sandpaper & heavy compound).. Some kid damaged the car again on the same side, a different body shop did the repair and there was more sloppy and incomplete work. Again the paint was a completely different color, not finished down smooth. The trim was never removed and repainted per the estimate. The body shop argues the insurance did not pay enough and refused part of the repairs, and tried to buff out damage. The fasteners are loose, the trim panels are wavy and it looks awful up close.. Other body shops look at the incomplete work and the estimate and refuse to finish the job because the insurance refuses to pay.. There is 3-4 different shades of paint on my vehicle, it was never polished to a mirror finish, collision damage is still apparent. Did I mention there was body shop dust all over the interior from both shops? So the trim is ruined, estimated repair 1700.00, insurance says 200.00 will fix it! The tire has cuts in the sidewall and the wheel is damaged, insurance refused to replace the tire stating all it needs is some armorall and some paint on the OEM wheel. I spoke to three different wheel companies, all of them said the new wheel will not match, a salvage dealer said all theirs are crusted up with brake dust.. Insurance is a joke and the body shops kiss their bottom to keep the work coming in their shop.

Darren. I work at a body shop.. well i did I recently quit. It was the worst experience ever and almost made me hate automotive work. It was such a fucking mess, you are right about how we are slave to insurance companies. There is a lottttttttt of dirty stuff they did while I was there that you would never think of. The place I was working at was so unorganized, nobody really knew anything about efficiency, but they were still making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. It is very lucrative and all about getting insurance work. There are so many ways to cheapen up jobs and a lot of stuff I was seeing was reckless and outright dangerous. I will never buy a salvage car now know what kinds of things can be hidden by some lazy workers, some of the stuff that was happening would severely compromise the integrity of a car if it was ever to be hit again.

With the title, I was expecting more actual polishing tips. This video had zero actual tips on polishing... I like your videos, but this one didn't help me learn at all.
