Cap is a better character than Superman in any case because, as stated in the video, he didn't start strong so he understands the plight of the weak. Whereas Superman was always strong and he's Good just because we're told he is.

pll9000 - Superman’s good because he’s been instilled with a moral code and sense of justice by both his birth father and his adopted father. He has the power to rule the entire planet if he wanted to but instead chooses to selflessly help people.

Allow me to quote a saying about Cap from an unknown netizen: "Steve Rogers is not great because he is Captain America; Captain America is great because he is Steve Rogers." Cap is a good man and a noble leader. He is always willing to stand up for what is right and fight for the values he believed in. Steve Rogers/Captain America is my favorite superhero and Avenger of all time.

Steve Chiang and that’s one of the reasons why the Infinity War is great, and the Justice League is a dumpster fire. The Avengers have Cap. The Justice League has this poor excuse for Superman Snyder has concocted.
I’m not looking to start a DC vs Marvel debate here, I’m just lamenting the fact that such a great character has been, figuratively speaking, mutilated on big screen. People cheer for Cap while sneering at Supes, despite them basically being the same archetype - an inspirational hero.

Mike Gee no you don’t understand, cap is a personification of a America. There’s a lot to be proud of as morality and virtue goes using America as an example. However cap as as a super hero is garbage in concept when stepped away from setting a moral example. Thanos, Galactus, the silver surfer, the hulk.. etc etc would crush cap without sympathetic writing

Chris Evans' portrayal of Captain America is spot on perfect.
Captain America made us remember what we are supposed to be. He made us proud to be that way (if we still are).
He is the candle at the end of a long tunnel, and he shone brightly to help lead us out of the dark.
We are going to DULY MISS Captain America, as portrayed by Chris Evans when he goes away.
I, personally, will never accept another actor in the uniform nor using the title of Captain America.
Knowing the other actors, and knowing how Cap has been portrayed...there can be no substitutes.

I totally agree. It's one thing to make a super hero movie with all kinds of techno gadgets or people with powers that require a lot of special effects that everyone oooos and aaaahs over. It's another thing to make a superhero movie where the character himself or herself has to carry the movie. The audience has to be vested enough in the character to want to keep watching to see what is going to happen to them next. In my opinion The First Avenger accomplished this which made us even more vested in Winter Soldier and Civil War.

I still say the Winter soldier is my favorite, we get to see Cap really evolve and mature his worldviews, although he was frozen for 70 years, in his head 5, 6 years ago he was just some young kid trying to serve his country.
and he saw how far the government can take things, his line about how "this isnt freedom this is fear", really exemplifies his progression as a character, such a great well-crafted and played character.

Steve doesn't actually say that though, he says "big man in a suit of armor, take that off and what are you". Tony says something like, billionaire, philanthropist, playboy. I remember liking the First Avenger, but not loving it. A part of me thought, "Sure, it's easy to be an idealistic boy scout in the 1940s. Things are more complicated now." But then in Winter Soldier, Cap still remains steadfast in the face of a very grey world. When it had a cost that I could relate to. See because both Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 have so many characters what they decided to is characters who have the more interesting arc in Avengers 4 would get a small role in Infinity War and a major role in Avengers 4 while the characters who have the more interesting storyline in Infinity War would have a big role in Infinity War and die at the end so they can leave space for the underused characters in Infinity War to have a bigger role in Avengers 4.

I am not from the US, but Cap is still my favorite avenger. I totally agree with your video except for the part where you talk about superman and american patriotism; I think the MCU's version of Cap portrays universal values of hope, persistence and standing for a cause worth fighting for, even if it means going against the established power. Heck, Cap 2 and 3 portray a man that does not stray away from his core values even when everything stands against him (US government included in civil war). It is not so much about being a patriotic symbol, but a symbol for the concept of humanity and hope. That is my view as a (western) foreigner.

Much like in the comics during Watergate, Cap stands for the American ideals of freedom and believes in what we can be at our best, even when our government doesn't. As Cap said in Civil War "My faith is in people, and for the most part, they haven't let me down." Cap represents what every American strives to be, even if we can't actually get there.

You're seeing it wrong, then. There is nothing in his "perfomance" that indicates anything of what I just mentioned. MCU just ignored that important aspect of his character. Just like they ignored Tony Stark's alcoholism from the comics. MCU is just afraid of tackling such touchy subjects in their movies. They will rather have a terrible joke instead of a compelling personal flaw.

Marvel Studios has done an amazingly good job depicting Captain America. He is a man who believes in patriotism, honor, courage, and virtue, who is thrust forward in time, into a postmodern, relativistic world, where patriotism, honor, courage, and virtue are deconstructed completely out of existence. He has remained true to his core values, never compromising them even once. And during World War II, when those values were in vogue and counted for something, he could easily follow orders and serve; but in our modern era where those values are harder to stand by, he stands by them; and because he stands by them, he finds himself, instead of following orders and working within the system, finds himself running afoul of the system. It is not himself that has changed; he is the same good man he has always been. It is the world around him that has changed, but his principles still guide him through that changed world. He is still a man of honor in a world of dishonor. Very, very well done.
By the way, DC were total idiots to have Superman renounce his US citizenship.

There was a Captain America storyline which reminds exactly of this comic, in which Cap goes hunting for Nuke (the Vietnam war Captain America), but gets captured and held hostage.
Nuke tries to convince Captain America that America and christianity can go f itself. He tortures Captain America, and reads him stuff like Nixon and civilian bombings during war and tha ect. This goes on for many weeks.
Eventually, Nuke has enough and decides to execute Captain America, but Cap manages to catch him off god and defeats. He than tells Nuke that he already knew about all that shit, and of course no country will ever be perfect, and the freedom and spirit that makes America will always stand for the greater good.

This is a man who has lost everything that he loves/loved, and yet he kept going because he knew that he could still do good. Now he's lived long enough that he is worried about seeing himself become the villain, and that is not what he wants or what we want. Should he die fighting Thanos he can still die a hero, and then he can be with Peggy, Howard, and all of the others he's lost along the way.

I remember watching Iron Man for the first time and drifting off halfway through the movie. Then I tried watching it again, and the same thing happened. It could not keep my interest. The character just wasn't appealing to me on a basic human level. Was never really into the whole comic book movie thing. Then I watched Wonder Woman and fell in love, so I decided to give comic book movies another try. I was a little disappointed at first because, for all the hype I'd heard about Marvel movies, nothing was really grabbing my attention. The characters were funny, and they obviously had their own issues, so they weren't necessarily flat, but I didn't feel the same kind of uplift that I felt when watching Wonder Woman. They didn't feel real. Seeing Diana experience humanity for the first time, the good and the bad, and seeing her filled with so much hope only to be disappointed by people, in the end, struck a chord within me. Someone who remembers very clearly being six years old and watching infomercials of poor kids on tv, only to later lock myself up in the bathroom and cry, and vow that I would make a difference one day. Then I grew up and realized how hard it is to be decent, and how hard it is to not be selfish even when we know better. How turning into an adult makes a cynic out of you. It's in our genes.
When I watched The First Avenger, I was reminded of that. I, a then 24-year old latina woman, saw my younger self in Captain America, or Steve Rogers (whom I prefer). Yes, you read that right. I saw myself in Steve Rogers, the little guy with a truckload of health issues but a strong, artistically sensitive, and unwavering heart. Someone who faces constant hurdles in life but always finds a way to pick himself back up. A guy who never gives up and only wants to do what's best for people, no matter how flawed we are. Someone with principles and convictions, but who is also imperfect. Someone who, when given the choice, puts others before himself. Someone who cares deeply for his friends and would lay his life down for them, even for stupid shit, and for what? Nothing. Absolutely nothing in return. I mean, when has he ever been compensated? Truly rewarded for all his efforts? And I don't mean just being given medals of honor, or having his face plastered in museums. I mean, when has he been able to lay low and just live his life, and be happy? Never. And why? Because Steve Rogers would rather the whole world be at peace than have a little for himself.
The little six-year-old in me wept. I thought I'd lost her. I thought I'd let her die. Watching his first two movies revived her, and that's when I realized Steve Rogers was the person I had always wanted to be. He was the role model I wish I'd had. And maybe if Chris Evans' version of Cap had existed in the 90's, I might have been able to overcome my deficiencies as a human being much earlier. I might have never let the world beat me down, like it does to many of us every day. A hero isn't just someone who saves our lives every now and then. A hero is also someone who impacts us in a positive way each and every day, and Steve Rogers is a constant reminder of who we could, and should, be. He makes people WANT to be better. That's what makes him the best.

I can seriously say this is one of the most underappreciated movies in the MCU.

Always liked Cap way back when I collected comics in the 90's (We miss you Stan). Even often played him in that arcade game Marvel Superheroes by Capcom. My son went as Cap on his first trick or treat, and whenever I do MMA workouts, I would often imagine being Cap using his favorite push kick. While others liked Tony's billionaire swagger, I said I always liked Cap because of his moral compass and "no quit" attitude even when over matched. That's why my favorite line of his is when he's beat up but he stands, covers up in an orthodox stance, and says "I can do this all day".

I find it curious that your analysis pretty much skips over the (related) qualities of Cap's decency in the Avengers movies, Winter Solder and Civil War-- his unending loyalty to his friends, his sincere listening to others as they speak, his dedication to moral principle, etc. If people love the MCU's Cap, it's perhaps most beautifully encapsulated in that final fight of Winter Solder as he, almost completely broken, insists that he's "with ya, to the end of the line." Anybody who can watch that moment and not get a little damp-eyed must be made of stone.

Ive always been a Cap't America fan since I was a little kid. I didn't had to watch his movies to love this guy. His comic books were enough for me to say Im his fan. Yes, I watched all Cap'ts movies even before Chris Evens, though they were terrible.
No body plays better Captain America than Chris Evens. Something about Chris that makes Cap't so special. I just don't want to see him go

In a world that always desires to be gray because we are too afraid to confront ourselves with the choice of good and evil, Cap was a breath of fresh air because he was never afraid to call good and evil for what it is.

Loved it! I always thought the First Avenger was underrated - especially since the score is so well done and I guess since it is set so far back no one thought it important except for setup for the Avengers movie. I never saw it that way and instead saw it as the best cap story ever.

Cap's greatness has NOTHING to do with nationalism. The movies constantly went out of their way to point this out. But other than that - I agree.

Guy R No it clearly does. America has always been the face of freedom. I dont wanna get into politics but Capt. America has always been motivated by the country and patriotism/nationalism. He was made to support the war efforts/ egg on joining WW2 but thanks for you “opinion”

    • @bobburger6802

      Pointless Garbage.
MCU Cap's greatness comes from just being a good man and to be the face of freedom and hope.
If you truly believe that it's just from patriotism/nationalism then I must ask, did you even watch The Winter Soldier? And if you did, did you even understand it at all?
Now remember this is MCU Cap we're talking here, not the comics.

    • @guyr3618
      @guyr3618 6 років тому +7

"America has always been the face of freedom."
      ...
      ...
      ... Seriously?
"Capt. America has always been motivated by the country and patriotism/nationalism."
Not in the movies, he's not. That's why he says stuff like "I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." That's also why he literally fights against the US government on several occasions. It's also why he eventually dropped every symbol of the USA he ever wore, and now fights as a nation-less outlaw, who has more in common with Wakanda than with with the USA.

    • @edpistemic
      @edpistemic 6 років тому +9

The distinction has to be made between the idealised version of 'America' and the reality of patriotism/nationalism. Cap stands up for 'American' (really, world) ideals of good so much that he would turn against his own country.

But he defends the American nest for the safe place it is for fostering a universal spread of peace and values that the best Americans protect even amongst the worst Americans.
He starts his fight where he lives, which happens to be America.

Captain America will always be the g.o.a.t. He sticks to his ideals and morals. He has a good heart who never gives up, no matter the odds. He doesnt use his strength to antagonize and bully people. Always to protect. A man still willing to give his life in setvice to his country. A country of people that shut him out, rejected him, and bullied him. He is humble, "im just a kid from brooklyn," courageous, honorable. truly an amazing hero that we can all strive to be like.

I agree. The first Cap movie was classic, but also very cheesy. It's a great film, but not the best marvel film or even the reason why he's the still the best modern hero imo. Yes the first film addresses the core of his fundamentals of his character that make him, but is still just an introduction that was yet to transition him. I was surprised you didn't mention the second film. The Winter Solider. Imo it is the best Marvel film to this day. You had all the fundamentals from the first film, but cap was transitioned into the modern era in a practical and badass way. The fight choreography in that movie was the best of any Marvel movie imo, specifically the knife fight scene with Bucky. That and the plot and the emotional appeal of 'I'm with you to the end of line' moment at the end where he is willing to die for his friendship. That movie had the everything from the best combat to the best tear jerker. My #1 rated Marvel film. Civil War was good, but it was more an avengers film, I still feel like they owe Cap a third dedicated movie. I hate to see him go. Avengers 4 is going to be emotional. I know Bucky will take his place as Nomad or the new Cap tho, and I trust him with the role. Bucky is signed for a 9 movie contract apparently. So get ready for more of him as Cap. Very excited to see his take on the role, still very sad to see Steve go.

Thanks, this video exactly explains why Capt is my favourite Avenger and why I love the first Cpt. America film. Cpt. America, Spiderman and Batman will always be my favourites because of who they are, since there's plenty of heroes that are simply about what they can do.
