@@ruthb7557 I would not argue coz everyone know that the dark knight triology ...................................is only 2nd best to cap america triology.
So I recently just became an MCU fan. I was a casual, less than a casual actually. Before infinity war I’ve only seen Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, Spider Man Homecoming, & Guardians of the Galaxy. The only reason I saw most of those movies was because of my cousin who was a big fan. At that moment Thor was my favorite because of his bold personality & strength. After watching infinity war I became intrigued. Months later I watched every single marvel movie in the MCU from scratch. 2 weeks later I was so impressed with this one character. A character who seemed to be overlooked by many fans and casuals, his movies, to me at least, were not only good but they were even better than the last. Captain America, hands down became my favorite avenger. This was solidified after Civil War. Just a simple kid who wanted to fight for himself and for the weak, someone who’s morality never changed, only improved. Someone who stood up for his country and the organization he served until he realized how rotten to the core it was & realized he was surrounded by snakes. Someone who stood by his childhood best friend, who he knew there was still hope inside of him. I’ve seen people claim Steve was being selfish for not giving into the Sokovia Accords & having them be regulated and kept in check just like Stark said. But they fail to realize why he’s skeptical about it. The man took down a secret organization and was about to sacrifice himself just so his best friend comes back to his senses. He’s the embodiment of progressive change, standing up for himself and the little guy. I cannot wait to see what happens in End Game. I kind of expect this movie to be his last farewell, and honestly I wouldn’t mind because this character really grew on me. The moment he became my favorite character was in civil war. Chris, regardless of the film you cover, I really enjoy your Film Negative series!! Hopefully you get the views to warrant you doing them more frequently.
I love Captain America The First Avenger it's a great character study of the hero and in my opinion it's the second best origin story behind only Batman Begins
Looking at this movie in hindsight, it definitely managed to lay down great groundwork for the character in the MCU. And it's a hell of a lot better than the other Captain's movie right now.
The Marvel/DC Fan I completely agree😂 Just went see Captain Marvel and left the movie feeling empty because her character really wasn’t moving plus she didn’t even do anything heroic. On the other hand ever time I watch the real Cap movies I’m glued to the screen and my heart strings are pulled
The First Avenger was the first MCU movie I ever watched, I immediately needed to watch all the other Phase 1 movies. None of the other Phase 1 movies really connected with me. I really like Iron Man 1, but just didn’t connect with me. Thor I find rather middle of the road, and Incredible Hulk is fine. It may not even be in my top 10 MCU films. Great video Chris, I really love this Film Negative series. Favorite MCU character is Captain America and my favorite MCU movie is Captain America The Winter Soldier. Civil War and a Infinity War are close 2nd and 3rd. Would love to see Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut as the next film negative. Is one of my favorite films, it bombed. It had massive studio edits, but it is easily too 5 Ridley Scott movies for me.
Civil war over infinity war. You are my kind of guy. The only reason i put civil war over infinity war is Cap's part. He is THE guy in civil war of course that's his solo movie and in infinity war he had a very small role. Hope he gets to play a big role in endgame.
I think all the Avengers movies are lackluster. It's all about spectacle over story. Which... fine, I get it. But pretty much every solo movie has a better story with more character development than any of the Avengers. Which, again... fine. Movies are a visual medium, if the Avengers movies are just supposed to be a visual treat that's fun because they're bringing together all these heroes, that could work. But make them different: no more army of sameness fighting the Avengers with a blue beam in the sky threatening the end of the world.
@@SchulzEricT No they are not. Avengers 1 had way more character building than iron man 2. Ok. Character dynamics , interrelationships between heroes are very well established in team up movies. If you increase the no. of characters, you should have less expectations for character building. Avengers infinity war did 100% character development for Thanos. Avengers movies are not the same at any level.
You absolutely hit the nail on the head. Captain America: The First Avenger will always be one of my favorite MCU films. Return of the Traditional Hero, indeed.
This is exactly the reason why I love Captain America. Right down to his core, he knows hes not perfect, but that doesn't stop him from always doing whats right. Standing up for the little guy. Hes been my favorite ever since I saw this movie. This is a very well made movie, and I hate that so many people don't see it as that. Definitely deserves a re-watch IMO.
Yeah, Cap is my favorite, too. No matter how much muscle and badass he put on, he remained that skinny kid who hopped on a grenade. Nothing but heart - which was everything. No flippant one liners (which, generally, are soo corny, they're like scratching a chalk board). I loved his response to 'Tony's', 'genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist...' 'I know guys with none of that, worth 10 of you.'
First Avenger is a very underrated movie and one of my top 5 favorite MCU films. It's well directed, acted and paced with a sweet tone and endearing character. It sets up Steve as a hearty underdog so you care about him when he transforms.
Cap is also my favorite Avenger. This is one of my favorite MCU movies because it sets up the best character in the MCU. My favorite moment in the entire MCU experience is when Bucky says "Let's hear it for Captain America".
I think it was thought of as worse when we didn't really know where this character was going. But with each progression in Captain America's arc, it just becomes a more and more important piece of the story. And now that we're where we're at, it is truly beautiful to look at this movie.
God, how I love this movie, and the entire trilogy. But especially this movie. I thoroughly enjoy every Marvel movie, but this one ... this one melts my heart.
Nothing beats the fact that he jumped on a hand grenade to save everyone else's life by sacrificing himself and it just happened to not go off...THAT is his best moment
Cap is my favorite too. I love him because he has an inner code, a morality that he lives by. He always tries to do the right thing just because it's the right thing to do. I too to try to do the right thing as much as can, just because it's what I see as right. I fail way more than he does but the character gives me hope that it's possible.
Cap is my favorite Avenger as well. I love how good he is and I don't find him boring at all. It's nice to have a hero who isn't an antihero but who will call someone out on using bad language, or is just really happy he finally gets a pop culture reference. I've seen every MCU movie and I can say that his movies are my favorites in the MCU.
One thing I love about the movie is how well they give Steve character agency. It would've been so easy to just throw him into the war after his super soldier upgrade and make him into a United States yes man. But instead, in order to become the hero he needs to be he has to defy his superiors orders and go rogue. This is great for character agency as well as establishing his character and his future actions in the MCU.
This film is honestly great, and there are so many details that are easily overlooked. For example, it took me quite some time and several rewatches to notice that there are a lot of hints at Bucky's future right from the moment Steve finds him in the Hydra base. It's overall just a very good origin story that sets up the character that is Captain America AND Steve Rogers as well.
This is beautiful. My favorite avenger is Captain America too. I also find myself rewatching this film of the 3 cap movies the most and to this day is still my favorite mcu film
I agree with you, the first avenger is a great origin movie and doesn’t get enough credit. I absolutely love the CA trilogy and the fact that it could have easily failed in the hands of the wrong writer makes me appreciate the MCU version of the character and the storyline so much more.
The Captain America Trilogy is my favorite in the MCU without a doubt, and I love The First Avenger for so many of the reasons that you pointed out. Thank you for the great breakdown of the different aspects of the film making that a really allows the audience - if they let it- to connect with Steve. I love that the look and feel of the film is so different from the modern day films because it shows an even more visceral disconnect from Steve's time - where the audience spent the majority of the movie with different color palate and saturation. Also, I just appreciate Chris Evans's acting and the sincerity he brought/brings to Steve, who , as you mentioned, could have easily gone a different direction.
My favorite MCU movie so far. I love the character of Cap, Peggy, the Howling Commandos, and all the rest, I love the idealism and pure sincerity it has, and I'm a sucker for 1930s and 40s pulp adventure and the style Johnston brings to it
During Infinity War's fight in the Edinburgh train station, a cheer went up in the theater when Cap appeared in shadows. I think he's a great superhero because he gives us something achievable (well, not the physique) to aspire to. I'd love to watch your take on The Incredible Hulk. And I second the suggestion for Kingdom of Heaven getting the Film Negative treatment.
My god this almost had me in tears. Great work on this breakdown I love this movie and character. please do this once a week. Keep up the hard work and I'll keep watching brother I want to take your class on film study
This was my first midnight premiere movie so of course it's got a soft spot already. But First Avenger is genuinely amazing in ways people overlook! All the reasons you state, from the filmmaking technicals to the unique exploration of Rogers. Yet this movie gets about as much attention as The Incredible Hulk (which also deserves an episode I think).
I always enjoyed this ? And I saw it was never rated as a “good” marvel movie . But it’s fantastic imo . Emotionally investing , good action , decent villain . Great characters . Very underrated imo
My gosh this was good! Cap is my favorite character as well and for all the reasons you spell out in this video. What a great second look review of this completely underrated film!
My favorite MCU movie, and my favorite MCU soundtrack. I love the Captain America March, and would love to hear it one last time in Endgame. So, yes, Captain America is definitely my favorite MCU character.
I wish this video had a "love" option. Phenomenal video! Thanks for taking the time to highlight the brilliance of "The First Avenger." I believe it's the most underrated film in the MCU where the Cap trilogy is clearly the strongest of all of them.
You really brought to mind Steve's sense if responsibility. Now I'd really love to see him and Peter Parker have a heart to heart, and for Steve to take Peter him under his wing as Tony did in Homecoming
Captain America trilogy is my favourite in the MCU. I was never a fan of the character much growing up until I watched The First Avenger and my favourite film of the MCU Winter Solider. For me it’s Chris Evans portrayal and amazing acting of the character which has made Captain America my favourite character in the MCU and I’m British.
Wowww thank you for bringing justice to this film! The First Avengers fully capture the essence of a pure hero. Unlike Iron Man or Thor and other Marvel characters (who I all admired), Steve has always stand for the greater good and he will always sacrificed his personal desire for it. Because of this, his arc will always feel tragic, but one that people can aspired to become. The "I can do this all day" scene will always stuck with me as one of the most heroic scenes ever and this film has given me that.
Just watched it for about the 20th time, never fails to inspire me. I have a modest collection of cap comics and I feel this origin movie is the truest to source material (except for Fury's absence from the howling commandos). One of my most favorite parts is when the doctor points to his chest right before he dies, that's some powerful stuff. Great job on this video.
This is my favorite MCU film as well. I relate to Steve in a lot of ways, and Peggy is my favorite character, period. The first MCU film I saw was The Avengers and I loved Cap in that one, but this movie was what made me really fall in love with him. :)
God... the soundtrack for TFA was amazing! Cap 1 was such a underrated movie. Cap is my favorite avenger, and I have to say GOTG was my favorite movie.
Most underrated movie in the whole entire MCU I really love the first avengers , and this movie was made even better in Avengers: Endgame. Will miss you cap.
Really underrated and overlooked movie. One of my personal favorite superhero origin movies along with Iron Man 1, Batman Begins and Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man.
Thank you for this excellent video, so accurately highlighting the CAtFA strengths...and some weaknesses 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The whole Cap trilogy is the MCU's crown jewel which got me emotionally invested in all the other movies with Steve (and his pal Bucky).
One of the most underrated movies out there. It is my second favorite MCU movie after Infinity War and even there it is by a close margin. I think they get Steve Rogers perfect as the good man he is in the movie.
For me, this is one of the MCU's top five movies because of everything you said. Steve falling on the (dummy) grenade said everything we really needed to know: trust in Cap.
I loved this movie since day one. That line where Steve says he doesn't want to kill but doesn't tolerate bullying either is one of my favorite lines from the entire MCU because it perfectly encapsulates his character. Chris Evans does for this role what Robert Downey Jr. did for Tony Stark/Iron Man but isn't given as much credit because the latter character is "cooler." Captain America: The First Avenger remains my favorite Phase 1 movie and I'm so happy to see a video like this showcasing why it's so special!
Thanks for this vid Chris. It's refreshing to find a well written video with proper justification and analysis about a movie on UA-cam. Keep up the good work!
Cap is my favorite too I love all his movies and his Personal Avenger scenes like the deleted scene from avengers and nightmare scene from age of ultron
Rewatching this movie made me agree with all of this. The movie has its flaws, but it does a lot right. It really establishes who Captain America is and takes time to build him up. I'm glad 99% of the movie is during that WW2 period. And I agree that unlike a lot of heroes in their origin movies, he does make a real sacrifice. He doesn't get the win/win scenario. He loses many of the people he knew, his place in time, and a life that were there for him. I think Iron Man had the best origin story and Phase 1 movie. But Captain America ended up one of if not my favorite Avenger because of his overall arc. And the while his first movie isn't his best movie, it is a good movie and sets him on that path. And while he is called Captain America, you can love this character no matter what country you are from. He stands for the kind of things that many people all over the world can appreciate and respect. No matter what happens in Endgame he'll remain one of my favorites.
I think that one reason this movie is sort of forgotten by many fans is it's sequel. Iron Man 2 and Thor:The Dark World are two of the worst MCU movies, while Winter Soldier is one other the best.
One thing that stood out to me and that I seldomly see mentioned is the scene where the hydra agent tosses the kid into the water and before Cap can go to save the kid he exclaims that he can swim. It's such a small thing, yet that boy did his part in stopping hydra from getting ahold of the super soldier sirum. I absolutely loved that this film acknowledged the value of everyone doing their part (no matter how small). I was sick of the stories where every character besides the protagonist is incidental and at the time and this scene was a breath of fresh air.
Can't believe I came across this video as I just decided to start watching this movie before hand. I don't have ironman one. Only part 2. But cap has always been one of my favorites since I was a child. 🇺🇸✊💪🇺🇸💓✌🇺🇸
IT IS GREAT! The cinematography, Richard Armitage shines, German Tucci, Hayley Atwell kicking butt, the Steve and Bucky relationship, Tommy Lee Jones and his fantastic witty lines, the incredible skinny steve visual with Leander and Chris, the line callbacks
The first avenger is still my favourite movie of the entire MCU even with great movies like the winter solider, civil war, infinity war and endgame as well as a whole bunch of others. The first avenger remains to be my favourite MCU movie.
My top 5 marvel movies: 5: Captain America: The Winter Soldier 4: Captain America: The First Avenger 3: Thor: Ragnarok 2: Captain America: Civil War 1: Avengers: Infinity War
I really enjoyed this video essay. Captain America is my personal favorite Avenger as well. I think an interesting film for a future episode would be Kingsman: The Golden Circle or more recently Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Keep up the good work!
Captain America is my favorite Avenger, too! It's for some of the same reasons as Spider-Man: he shows us an ordinary person with very human problems, has him answer a moral question, and become the type of person so many of us with we could be. Now, you make some good points about him missing the dance. That definitely illustrates a flaw and a mistake. But even those of us who succeed at something also struggle with regrets for what we had to leave behind, so it's easy to relate to that, too, despite his fantastical circumstances at the end of the film.
One of my favorite MCU movies, massively underrated imo

Cap has always been about Sacrifice. and thats why im always looking forward to seeing him more than any other MCU heroes by far.
“And ze furhrer digs for trinkets Inez dezert “ Even has a nod to raiders. Love that line.
r modric MCU-Indiana Jones shared universe? 😆
I feel pretty much the same - Chris Evans has done a perfect job with the character, he IS Captain American - my favorite Avenger.
I love this movie with my whole heart. And I always cry at the end. It's my favourite MCU movie and one of my favourite movies of all time.
The First Avenger is a underrated gem. I have made it my first film to watch when doing a Infinity Saga marathon.
I love the first Captain America 😍! It's in my top five MCU movies.
One of the most underrated comic book movie films ever
this review made me love captain America even more
I've loved this move all along but your insight on caps character flaws made me nearly cry
I love the character of Cap, Peggy, the Howling Commandos, and all the rest, I love the idealism and pure sincerity it has, and I'm a sucker for 1930s and 40s pulp adventure and the style Johnston brings to it
That First Avenger ending may be the best of any MCU movie! Great video.
Next, 'Why Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the BEST'
Man this video made me honestly cry, beautifully edited and worded. Great job, thank you!
That fact it isn't seen so is sad.
Saw it on Netflix after A1. Loved the guy.
I wish this video had a "love" option. Phenomenal video! Thanks for taking the time to highlight the brilliance of "The First Avenger." I believe it's the most underrated film in the MCU where the Cap trilogy is clearly the strongest of all of them.
This, Guardians 2, Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 are the underrated movies in the MCU
Yes! I'm another Brit who feels Cap is the heart of the MCU!
I hear people talk trash about this movie, in my opinion, it is one of the best comic book movies of all time.
God... the soundtrack for TFA was amazing! Cap 1 was such a underrated movie.
Cap is my favorite avenger, and I have to say GOTG was my favorite movie.
Great video! Cap is my favorite Avenger as well, and this film deserves a lot more praise than most people give it. Thanks for sharing!
The First Cap movie is brilliant it's what it is the origins of Cap remember first watching it when it came out I thought that's spot on 👍👍
Most underrated movie in the whole entire MCU I really love the first avengers , and this movie was made even better in Avengers: Endgame.
Never delete this video ever, its so true
One of the most underrated movies out there. It is my second favorite MCU movie after Infinity War and even there it is by a close margin. I think they get Steve Rogers perfect as the good man he is in the movie.
For me, this is one of the MCU's top five movies because of everything you said. Steve falling on the (dummy) grenade said everything we really needed to know: trust in Cap.
Finally some one that sees good in underrated and disliked movies.
Yes! First Avenger, while not perfect obviously, is quite underrated in my opinion. Great video! 👍
PLEEEASE do the next one on The Lost World Jurassic Park!
A solid, extremely underrated MCU film. Chris Evans was the perfect choice for Cap.
Great video. I love this movie and it's gotten better and better for me with age. Iconic.
It's my 6th favorite mcu movie (under Guardians, Infinity War, Civil War, Winter Soldier and Iron Man). It's so underrated.
I think that one reason this movie is sort of forgotten by many fans is it's sequel. Iron Man 2 and Thor:The Dark World are two of the worst MCU movies, while Winter Soldier is one other the best.
Capt is the best MCU trilogy. Period! First was good. Next two were great! Iron Man and Thor trilogies can't say that.
you get it. you understand. this makes me feel better. made my day at 6:49 am.
Fav Avenger: can’t choose one so I’ll say Cap & Iron Man’s relationship
Fav MCU movie: Guardians vol.2
IT IS GREAT! The cinematography, Richard Armitage shines, German Tucci, Hayley Atwell kicking butt, the Steve and Bucky relationship, Tommy Lee Jones and his fantastic witty lines, the incredible skinny steve visual with Leander and Chris, the line callbacks
The first avenger is still my favourite movie of the entire MCU even with great movies like the winter solider, civil war, infinity war and endgame as well as a whole bunch of others. The first avenger remains to be my favourite MCU movie.
My top 5 marvel movies:
5: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4: Captain America: The First Avenger
3: Thor: Ragnarok
2: Captain America: Civil War
1: Avengers: Infinity War
I really enjoyed this video essay. Captain America is my personal favorite Avenger as well. I think an interesting film for a future episode would be Kingsman: The Golden Circle or more recently Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Keep up the good work!
And through these days he still says "whatever it takes." You can't get better than that.
