EAEA is a flamenco lullaby. EAEA is an onomatopoeia that Spanish mothers do to calm their children while they are crying. The song tells the story of a mother who wants to be buried in the moon when she dies to see her child every night except one (the new moon day). The red strings of the staging are very typical in the Spanish flamenco costumes. Also the song has references to the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the most important poets of Spain. This is the most Spanish entry we ever had and we are so proud of her.

As a Mexican I’m a tiny bit more used to this type of music. Not in Mexico but from some Spanish artists which occasionally trended here. It has become much more common in recent year tho with artists like Rosalia.
But yeah this is such a cool modern reinterpretation of it. It really makes me wanna go dance on a field and try to summon your ancestors. That’s kinda the simbolism I get in the opening with all the hands reaching for her through the curtains, like the ghosts of the past reaching out during a very primal ritual. Plus the lyric about her wanting to be buried in the moon so she’s able to look down upon her descendants, just beautiful.

Blanca Paloma's song is a play, a performance made to be represented and with the staging it makes sense, using Spanish (Lorca) but also universal symbolic references. It is an invocation, a call, a song to what makes us feel safe and strong at the same time, which makes us enter a hypnotic trance.
She relates it to her grandmother, to that maternal thing that takes care of us and protects us. The red fringes that hang down and that she already explained reminded her of her grandmother's shawl, form a circle that is like a maternal womb that gives us light and nourishes us. She goes through that uterus that is fertilized (this is how I understand those hands that surround her and hold her for a few seconds). Then the miracle of life is done.
The moon is the symbol of the feminine, which engenders, nourishes and makes it grow. It is present every night except when it goes out on a new moon. During the performance, the sound “ea, ea” is repeated loudly and rhythmically, which is the lullaby that mothers sing to children when they are afraid, when they cry, to reassure them and give them strength. Nothing bad is going to happen... The dancers also imitate the movement of the arms that they cradle spasmodically. It looks like a sway of waves... Because the sea also lulls and transforms with the phases of the moon and is the quintessential feminine element. The base that sounds below the telluric song and the allusions to the heartbeat complete the visual and sound elements of the set.
This song is a song to life and a work of art. Win or not, it will not leave anyone indifferent and it will be difficult to forget.

The one thing that Spain is stereotyped about is flamenco. Always flamenco. This is not the first reaction video of Eaea that I saw that the reviewer doesn’t know anything about flamenco sounds and that is very sad (granted the reviewers are young, but still flamenco IS the Spanish stereotype).
Anyway, flamenco is a traditional Spanish music very common in the south of Spain. Spain doesn’t send flamenco entries to ESC because they’re ashamed of it. Sending a flamenco fusion song is a risky move on Spain’s part. But the Spaniards chose her.

The song itself (singing, clapping) is a bulería, kind of a specific 'subgenere' of flamenco with a modern twist of an electronic beat
The topic and the lyrics come from the POV of a woman singing a lullaby, trying to put her crying baby to sleep ('Eaea' is a cooing sound in Spain)
The performance and staging are the ones of a ritual, summoning her ancestors. Specially her late grandma, wich this song is inspired by and dedicated to, because she taught and used to sing flamenco and lullabies to her.
The repetitive pattern of the beat, backing vocals and rythmic clapping are intended to be entrancing and hypnotizing for connecting with the energy of the experience. Her hand movements work as a praise and a calling to the above.
The red threads are a reference to the fringes of a traditional 'mantón' (shawl) simbolizing protection, motherhood, in fact she said it could be seen sort of womb-shaped. Actually she worked as a costume and stage set designer, as she did here too.
The white circle represents the moon, where, as the lyrics say, she wants to be buried in when she dies, so she will be able to watch over her child everynight but one ('newmoon')
First she kneels looking up, later she kneels again looking downwards, always with a reaching hand.
Then she shoots a flaming arrow and lights it on fire (red pulsing light, heartbeat, blood, death) Finally the priestess gets on the shrine to end the ritual in ecstasy.

I'm Dutch but I've lived in Spain, so Spain always has a special place in my heart and I've been really frustrated with how badly they have been doing in Eurovision in the last decades (albeit deservedly so, since their entries have mostly been mediocre). The turnaround they made last year was a great breather and this year it's even better! I'm so happy that Spain is really tapping into its rich traditional musical culture and taking this fantastic risk, which I feel is gonna pay off because Blanca Paloma is doing such an amazing job. She designed this whole staging herself and her performance is amazing! It's so magical and mesmerising, I'm just gripped every time I see it. Whatever the result, Spain should be so proud!

Likewise, a person on the surface of the moon finally ends up transformed into an eye that from there contemplates her son. Blanca Paloma has a powerful voice and is faithful to traditional flamenco combined with some electronic beats. She sings a lullaby learnt from her grandma. Some singers have achieved success combining flamenco with rock or reggaeton , like Rosalía or Enrique Morente. If you like to listen to new flamenco, Omega is one of the best albums. It links rock, some of the most famous flamenco's artists (Enrique Morente, Vicente Amigo...), Federico García Lorca's poems and Leonard Cohen's songs: an extraordinary album. It's funny, a lot of people don't seem to recognise it as typically Spanish at first, often mentioning Balkan sounds and the like (and there may be some musical reminiscence there)... but this is actually veeery Spanish. It's a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional copla/flamenco music, typical of the south of Spain. I think it's quite exceptional, and so different from the legions of formulaic English-language pop songs at Eurovision. I hope she does really well.

What a sweet reaction, thank you ❤️ not everybody understands and likes this song but it seems that you completely feel it 🥰 even more than many spanish people
1:55 on this part she sings something like:
    My dear child,
    When I die
May I be buried at the moon
So I can watch over you every night
Except one (because of new moon)
The lyrics are a lullaby and the red strings represent a traditional spanish cloth that her grandmother used to wear, representing like a hug and protection to her while she sings

The reason why it sounds "albanian" (or a bit different than any other type of European music) is because flamenco has its roots in arabic culture, as it was born in Andalusia (Al-Andalus) which the muslim occupied for centuries

As a spaniard, (from the East of the country, not the South), I didn't expect such a reaction of a swedish girl about our entry this year 🙏
Without knowing anything about the lyrics and the meaning of Blanca's whole performance, you observed and loved the details you could see: her clothes, the dancers, her voice, her expression, the elements on stage...And that happens because you are a very sensitive and observer person!
Thanks very much for your lovely reaction to Blanca Paloma's song! And don't worry if you feel like crying. The strength of Blanca and her song just deserves it! Greetings from Spain! 🍀

Sorry not Albanian.... But Flamenco with Arabic vibes, which is not surprising bearing in mind the Arabs /Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years.... So yeah pure Spanish Essence from the South (Flamenco that at the same time has got Arabic influence because of Històric links) mixed with some electronic Music. Vamos Blanca Paloma!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh my sweet child, come to me, come to me, to sleep by my side. In my chest you will find shelter. Shelter and relieve to all your griefs.
Ya Ea Ea Ya Ea Ea. ( Spanish Expression sweet when mothers embrace their childrens to make them sleep peacefully and calm them down of fears and tears)
Nile River tears and sleepless nights ( that reminds Lorca Poem)
My child when I die , bury me in the Moon ( circle White of the performance) and all nights I see you, all nights I see you, all nights I can see you, but one night ( here refers although only just one night because she knows and accept there will be one night, she can see him when the Moon is dark, with the new Moon)
Oh come to me, my little son, my little one, my lovely son. That in the night your eyes bright my way like two Suns ( Stars, his clear eyes light her way like not only but two Suns, she exagerate the idea, that just watching her son eyes can remove all her pain bringing true meaning for her like mother)
Ya Ea Ea Ya Ea Ea. ( Words of confortation and mothers love to feel safe and sound before going sleep meanwhile they carrying in their arms) thats It, and so she repeat same again.
In the performance theres a lot reference to Flamenco like that red curtain circle symbol of the fridge shawl dancers. The Arrow when light on that red colour symbolism of life and Blood, dancers or priestesess rythm is like they were in trance or ecstasy invoking their ancestors . Actually Blanca dedicate this song to her passaway grandmother Who taught her to sing Flamenco, only Blood connection that since she just been a child felt so close. Her grandmother sung her these similars Flamenco lullaby when she was just a little girl. And now she wrote this one back to her memory. The most special one according to her, which saw in her the perfect inheritor to give away that passion and continue that privilege and extraordinary legacy.

Great reaction. The music is a modern version of flamenco, a Spanish folk style. Whereas for the lyrics it is a lullaby. A protection song for a sleeping baby child usually sang by the mother.

  • @marianchoyamartin3146

Well, this song comes from Flamenco music ( which has Arabic roots given that it comes from Andalucia, the South of Spain))... It's been in Spain since centuries. There have been and there are many Flamenco singers:
    ua-cam.com/video/ZkiAsHbVNG8/v-deo.html
However as already has been said the "ea ea ea..." is usually used here (in Spain), to calm or soothe a baby when is crying. This song is the one that her own grandmother (Paloma's) sang her when she was a child, so it's also a tribute to her grandma. The moon is a very important device because is the place where she wants to be buried so that she can protect her child from the sky, when death comes for her....and there are other many touching elements in this lullaby...the best for me, apart from transmitting Spanish folk and culture, is that all their feelings are UNIVERSAL; the love of a mother, the love for a child, your family (grandmother), the fear of loss, life versus death...and so forth! LOTS OF LOVE FROM SPAIN! ;-)

This is not 'pure' flamenco (a type of folk music mainly from the South). This is a mix of electronic (or techno) music and flamenco. And this is not a typical lullaby, because of the fast rhythm and the high energy.... This is what makes it innovative, and great, in my opinion. I'm happy that you liked it because I thought that people from abroad were not to understand it and value... -Thank you for your comment.

It's kinda curious to me seeing how foreign people making reactions have the same comments about this sounding like more eastern and not relating it that much to a Spanish sound while this has like the ESSENCE of flamenco sound and flamenco is probably the most Spanish genre of them all. Somehow is like people being surprised about paella having rice 😅 only for that , I think it was worthy choosing it to represent.

Hi Johanna, my name is Alejandro and I'm Spanish, I really liked your authentic reaction to Blanca Paloma's performance. Indeed, as they say in the comments, Eaea is a flamenco lullaby that pays homage to her grandmother and Federico Garcia Lorca . The truth is, I hardly understand English but your reactions even without understanding you said a lot. :)
Without a doubt, although there are people who do not see a future in this song for Eurovision or believe that we are going to be last, I think that it is one of the best representations that Spain could have, look at the performances of the Benidorn Fest 2022 by Blanca Paloma (which does not have nothing to do with this one), the one by Rigoberta Bandini and the one by Tanxugueiras and make your reaction if you want, for me one of those three should have represented Spain but it couldn't be, instead the song Slomo by Channel was great in terms of to staging and choreography and we finished third making us dream of victory at times.
Thank you for trying to give the visibility that Blanca Paloma deserves in your country. Hopefully the truth wins because I think he deserves it. A big hug my friend and thank you very much😉

I like your reaction a lot. Maybe you are more able to admire this great performance than Spanish people in general, Nowadays, I observe many people very critic with this performance and comparing with Remedios Amaya performance with " A quien maneja mi barca" Many people saying; " Spain, 0 points this year" OMG!
I can't understand these actitudes in front this amazing performance. I'm Catalan and I want Catalonia as a independent country, but I admire de music and the Spanish culture. I can't understand that Spanish people don't defense this great show. Unbelievable!
