    the clapping (palmas) is part of spanish flamenco culture, it's not intended for the public to follow! i'm glad that you liked it, thank you for the reaction :) you should've read the lyrics though, they're beautiful and help you enjoy the song on an emotional level too

    Eaea is not something I would normally listen to, yet I love it. There is a strange beauty to it that I can't really explain that keeps giving me goosebumps. I feel like it also really represents Spain. I love how it feels modern and traditional at the same time.

    One of the best reactions for Spanish entry. I am also musician and it’s great the way you mix the more specific language with a general one for everyone to understand.
    About the base and the clapping is a buleria (one of the ways to sing and play flamenco), which metric its 12 beats. In classical music that would be a 6/8 + 3/4 but the traditional way to do it is the following one, being the 1 always the upbeat (and the X the strong parts of the bar):

    Also the microtonality is quite normal in flamenco music as it comes from ancient arabic culture in south of spain. Usually nowadays they use quarter tones.

    How is it possible that as a music teacher you don't know flamenco and the technique used to perform it? This is flamenco vocally, accompanied by rhythmic clapping and a techno beat in the background. And it's not a song to ignore while you're driving, it's also a sample of Spanish musical culture and whether it wins the contest or not doesn't matter, it's art and passion.

      No one needs to know flamenco to be a music teacher! Lol most pro musicians don't claim to know anything about flamenco either, its a very traditional, specific and fairly niche genre (and very wonderful).

    Love this, definitely my favourite out of the ones I've heard this far! I remember being in Sevilla on a holiday as a child and watching a flamenco show. I was so impressed by the dancing, singing, and live music, that I begged my parents for a pair of castanets as a souvenier from the trip. Never learned to actually play them, but still love flamenco music 😄

    Éa éa is that Spanish mothers say to calm their children while they are crying. The song tells the story of a mother who wants to be buried in the moon when she dies to see her child every night except one (the new moon day). The red strings of the staging are very typical in the Spanish flamenco costumes. Also the song has references to the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the most important poets of Spain. This is the most Spanish entry we ever had and we are so proud of her.
    if you understand the lirycs, every thing she does takes sense. The moon, the hands placed like a birth canal where she puts her head lying down, the eye from the moon, the movements of the dancers as giving birth, the fringes of the shawl with which the mother gathers the child, ....

      A mi ella me parece una estupenda cantante pero la canción, la puesta y la escenografía no me gusta. Solo espero no volver a la cola este año en los puestos.. con eso me conformo y ella que lo disfrute por supuesto.

    Thanks for your reaction ⭐ I think it really nails what Blanca is going for with her song - she's trying to innovate. There have been some Spanish artists lately who have mixed flamenco with electronic music, but not in such a dark and artistic way like Blanca. Obviously it's a pretty risky move, especially for a Saturday night show, but I think it's great that Spain is following in the footsteps of other countries like Portugal, Serbia, or Ukraine, breaking away from the typical "Swedish-Eurovision vibe."

    I've experienced flamenco in Sevilla, definitely a genre you enjoy more watching rather than listening to it on the radio. So much to take in visually. I loved the facial expressions.

    I do not have any experience working with flamenco music, or music theory in general. But I can actually clap along with the beat (probably because I've listened to this a thousand times now because it's my favourite song this year), but it has a structure of 6/4 repeated twice with 3 3 2 2 2.
    Also two things that I've discovered thanks to a Reddit post about the song. The instrumental background (which does not involve any guitars at all!) has two interesting things going on. The more high pitch synths create a Shepard tone whenever they appear, while the lower bass-like synth that goes along with the central light on the stage has a beat of 5/4. Strangely enough, the bass synth acts like a "jigsaw", meant to accompany the 6/4 clapping. If you employ the 3 3 2 2 2 clapping, timed with this bass, it doesn't sound dissonant!

      Bulerias have a rythm that we could call 6/8 + 3/4. 12 beats divided in what you said "3 3 2 2 2". The light stage has a beat of kinda 5/4 because of the stress beats on the rhytm. I'd recommend if you like clappin along the song you can search "bulerias por doce palmas" and learn the rhythm, if you can already clap along you've got half covered. Even here (i live where this style was born) a lot of people can't follow it. This style has to sets of people clapping, the first puts a stress on the seventh beat and the second puts it on the eighth instead.

    I voted for this song and it did NOT deserve such a low score. It's also the only song that I still listen to regularly after eurovision. I agree that it's an aquired taste and I have a lot of appreciation for ethnic music from all kinds of countries so it was perfect to me. I love flamenco, I love Fado, I also love stuff like celtic women or Japanese Kodo music so on and so forth. This culturally specific music really fells like it has so much soul and love to it and doesn't try to adhere to popular beats to sell. I also love me some fun pop but in a space like eurovision I really love to see more interesting stuff.

    Hi! As a music teacher, then, you will find the following interesting [I assume]
    -What makes you "uncomfortable" is actually the rhythm, rather than the major scale or mode she is using [and is relatively typical, the "hispano-árabe" which is part of the minor collection of scales]. She is using a "palo" [flamenco rhythm structure] called "bulería", which is a 3-3-2-2 beat type. This rhythm produces a steady precipitation beat [as the short parts are at the end], rather than other type of mixed beats of 5/8 7/8 or 10/8, even the 5/4, which are very present in spanish music [depending on the spanish cultural background it is placed, remembering that a "zortziko" has nothing to do with a "bulería" or a "pasodoble"].
    -The "hispano-árabe" scale is a major mode or major scale with the 2nd and 6th intervals altered downwards [don´t know how to translate "intervalo disminuído"].
    -The "microtones" are part of "quejío" -but depends on the musical theory and the listener, obviously-, and for spaniards are really not that strange. It is, though, something that is quite hard to control and most anglosaxon musics mistake with runs or microruns. You can see a modern take of it if you search for "rosalia gala de premios goya".
    -IT IS WESTERN MUSIC, fer crying out loud! 🙂
    -Clapping is an instrument. Specially for Flamenco, clapping is not just clapping. I remember that, when studying musical theory and language, and when dissecting the percussion instruments on an orchestra, "hands" were included as clapping within the percussion instruments.

      About flamenco. Any comments from me about discomfort were from the western ear - by western music I mean classical, jazz, pop, rock - all music which had its origins in styles from baroque music originating in Europe.
      Flamenco is not western music (of course it’s not “eastern music” either). I think that’s where the confusion comes from when I mention “western” - I always refer to western music as anything derivative from baroque music in Europe.

    I had it down near the bottom of my list at the beginning when I first heard it. But then I saw it live, her versatility, her raw emotion, wow! It hits you and you really need to listen to the live version, maybe from Friday night’s Eurovision pre-party in Madrid. Her voice is incredible!!!
    Could she win? After hearing the lives, absolutely! She has catapulted up the odds recently

      Many foreigners become like Eaea after see her in preparties, and i think that the problem is the performance in the National final. Sadly, this performance will be in Liverpool, even more intense with more trance feelings.

      The first time I heard it, it captivated and hypnotized me, Spanish is not the language that he handled best but I understand it perfectly and the lyrics captivated me, then when I saw the performance I was very impressed, I don't remember a performance that created so many for me sensations like this ... for me it is a great or epic masterpiece ..

    Let’s face it! He is right in everything he says. The Spanish song will either be liked a lot or it will not be liked at all. There will be no middle ground. It is true that it is not the type of song that I would put in the car or that I would download and I am Spanish but flamenco singers do not earn their living selling records but in live performances. Even in Spain it is very difficult to tune into a radio station that plays flamenco songs.
    However, having said that, it is also undeniable that this year Spain offers the best vocal in the contest and something unique that only Spain can offer.
    I remind you that flamenco is the non-material heritage of humanity and it wouldn't be bad if, for once, a universal heritage lullaby sung in the flamenco style won.
    Where are all those who ask for something new every year, never seen before and totally innovative? Well, Spain is what it offers this year with a girl with a surprising and amazing total vocal control.

      @@sisigaia3079 Totalmente de acuerdo contigo! La canción ganadora, la sueca Tatu de Loreen estuvo muy pero que muy sobrevalorada por los jurados (mejor dicho, para algunos jurados porque muchos la pusieron donde tocaba de 6 puntos para abajo) y no fue ni mucho menos la ganadora del tele voto.
      Dicen que hay que innovar etc etc etc….. Siendo objetivos, a mi la canción Tatu de Loreen me sonó a una segunda parte muy descafeinada de su EUPHORIA. Me sonó a lo mismo de hace 10 años cuando ganó pero muchísimo más light. Ella encima no aportó nada absolutamente nada nuevo en su actuación… los mismos gestos y movimientos , exactamente los mismos que en los de Euphoria. Nada nuevo señores y señoras. Y encima, al final de la canción no es que desafinaba sino que también berreaba y gritaba como una cosaca intentando dar ese toque de pasión que no le salía de dentro!
      De verdad, que me hace mucha gracia ver tanto VOCAL COACH diciendo que su voz fue increíble y que el final fue épico…. Yo me considero un simple espectador que estudió algo de solfeo y de piano y de acordeón cuando era más joven… No soy un experto en voces ni siquiera en coaching …. Pero yo lo que escucho en sus últimos 30 segundos es todo lo contrario a algo épico…. Pero todo lo contrario… Escucho mucho pero que mucho griterío intentando darle a su voz una pasión que simplemente no consigue dársela… todo lo contrario…. Muy fake y muy pero que muy muy muy justita su performance….. pero bueno….. Debo estar yo equivocado porque ante tanto VOCAL COACH que voy a saber yo????

    Love the reaction! The clapping though is not to make the song more catchy or something, it's because that style of music genre (flamenco) is supposed to go with clapping traditionally. Hugs from spain!

    On the 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 of the performance:
    - The song genre is a '𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑖́𝑎' (kind of a specific subgenere of flamenco) with electronic touches.
    - The lyrics of the song is a 𝑙𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑦.
    'éa éa' is an onomatopeia in Spain we use to calm childrens while they are crying.

      Hay muchos extranjeros que no han escuchado Flamenco en sus vidas. No hay que molestarse. Seguro que tú y yo no hemos oído en la vida folklore finlandés, por poner un ejemplo, y si Finlandia lleva una canción como la nuestra con su folklore fijo que nos sentiremos extrañados.

      @@stateofdreaming i like very much the opinion of the teacher, but, really, there are many vocal coaches and teaches than only know about commercial genres in English, and they can't be able to react about commercial songs in other idioms, folk songs, or not commercial genres like hard Rock or metal. I think my favourite vocal coach is Rebecca vocal atlete.

    It's interesting that you think this is not Western music. 😃😃 I'm from Finland (North Europe) and to me this is Mediterranean music, it's similar to Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Balkan, Arabic musical styles. These are not unfamiliar notes, a bit less common maybe, but absolutely familiar. You can hear this influence all the time. For example Shakira had this influence in her (in my opinion) best songs. If you want uncomfortable notes to Westerners you probably need to go to traditional Thai and Chinese music.

      Heya! Thanks for this 😊 regarding western music, I use it to mean any style of music not derived from European western classical music. You’re right they’re definitely not unfamiliar and we of course see incorporation of traditional music with western music now a days - maybe I only know Shakira’s popular songs, which whilst absolutely used aspects of latin music (especially in instrumentation), I find she’s offering something very different to what Blanca is here - which of course the style plays a massive part: it’s fusion with electronic music.
      I’m feeling like there are greater uses if clashing harmonies here. I might do a deeper dive of the song because I’m clearly not as familiar with flamenco as others are. I just never want to stop learning.

      I don't hear much in common with Shakira either. She has something in common with Rosalia: both have flamenco roots.
      @MTR this song is a flamenco bulería. It has the same time signature as the 1st movement of Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo which is also a bulería and is inspired by flamenco too.
      West Side Story's song "America" by Leonard Bernstein has a clear Hispanic flare and has this bulería tempo as well.

Small work of art, three minutes. And yes, in Spain we listen to these wonders in the car, at work, on the beach, in the mountains...     Thank you for your work in making music analysis accessible to the untrained such as myself. I am Spanish and have heard a lot of flamenco music growing up (as you do living in Spain) but I had never noticed the subtleties you are pointing out. I found your comments about what makes this song (and flamenco music in general) uncomfortable truly fascinating.

      I've already seen it, and she makes a version with some very nice changes, apart from the fact that Blanca is a voracious tigress of interpretation, she has great advice or knowledge about folk music from other countries and she adds a few brushstrokes or a wink 😉 to Israel , that looks spectacular on you, as you go touring many countries, will we see new versions? Each one more fabulous...it's incredible...speechless...

      Perdón si mi Español no es correcto, yo de más pequeñita vi una película de una artista vuestra que solía cantar otro género pero en esa película canta flamenco y luego he conseguido canciones flamencas de ella y me impresionan mucho sus melismas flamencos, creó que si Blanca metiera un melisma de esos en esta obra maestra impresionará aún más, sobre todo a la gente de ciertos lugares..
      Perdón he mirado y la película es(la Lola se va a los puertos) mí granabuela (la mamá de mi abuela) era fanatica del gran Lorca y esta es de un libro de los dos Machado que también le gustaba muchísimo..

      @@floresilla hablar es más fácil y por suerte hablo bastante idiomas y por razones laborales para los 6 años ya nos fuimos a Asia y ya sabía 4 idiomas por desplazarnos, pero escribir aún me cuesta distinguir cuando lleva ( V o B) la (H) la última me despista mucho..
      Nací en McAllen(Texas) luego con 1 año fuimos al País Vasco de los 2 a los 4 en Francia y de los 4 a los 6 otra vez País Vasco, en el colegio y en la calle solo hablábamos Euskera un idioma tal vez el más difícil pero el mas precioso y en la TV si ponía todo en Español y aprendí a háblalo luego a Varsovia pero mi mamá es polaca y ya sabía un poco Polaco y aprendí muy rápido, con 7 en Asia unos meses en un país y otro en otro y más, pero ya si con esa edad has tenido que aprender unos cuantos ya todo fluye mejor, aprendí rápido Koreano,Japonés,luego Malayo e Indonesio que son parecidos y Javanes, ma tarde también Chino Mandarín y Bengalí pero estos y el Español los hablaba creo que muy correctos pero no los estudiado nunca ni en ninguno en el colegio me han dado de esos idiomas, el Español es de los primeros que aprendí y apenas lo he practicado pero me ponía películas y si tenía oportunidad de practicarlo con alguien aprovechaba la ocasión, desde los 4 años lo hablo, escribir procuro no usar el corrector para mejorar pero muchas palabras ya cada vez menos pero aún miro sobretodo la V o la B pero ya menos, lo importante es hablarlo sin tener que traducirlo en la mente, ya pensar en Español y no en otro idioma traducirlo en la mente y luego decirlo y eso ya hace muchísimo que no tengo que hacerlo con el Español...

      @@estitxu14 aquí en España te cogerían para trabajar en cualquier lado con tantos idiomas, hay mucha gente diciendo que ya no tiene caso aprender idiomas ya que tenemos la inteligencia artificial y el internet pero la verdad que no es lo mismo. Hablar con alguien en otro idioma es una experiencia muy bonita y poder comprender la estructura de un idioma. Yo hablo 4 todavía no estoy a tu nivel 😔

      @@floresilla Tal vez porque no tenias la necesidad, pero sin necesidad 4 esta muy bien y es uno de los pasos más no sé como decirlo.."un punto clave o ropes una barrera"que con 4 ya el 5 es mucho más fluido el 6 más y ya llega un momento que te sorprende..yo también Portugués e Italiano me defiendo bien para conversar y reservar por teléfono pero no para hacer una carrera con el nivel actual, mejoraría muy rápido pero el nivel de ahora es limitado y con Ruso y Ukraniano parecido... Árabe no se y es una de las lenguas más habladas...

    This thing that you call "uncomfortable" I believe it is the typical musical scale flamenco songs have, where there is a tone and a half between the 6th and 7th notes of the scale. This is also what makes it sound kind of arabic.

    I absolutely loved it, mix of folk and DnB, it hits hard. We have some similar folk choirs music (as Georgia too), when few different voices sing in different tones. If you separate them would think, that they miss notes, but when you combine them, then it becomes perfect sound harmony. Like + and - become 0. Very unusual feeling to hear such music.

    Did you know the winner has to host Eurovision the next year?
    In the terms of expenses and organization, is like hosting a miniolimpics so, I am going to be honest, some countries don't want to win this.
    Some countries want to participate in the celebration itself, and will send songs with the aim of not being bad, but definitely not winning.
    Spain being one of the five countries that goes to the finals regardless of what we send, with this one we wanted to share the culture we are proud of, but it wasn't a song that would win and we knew it.

    Dude, the vibrant voice is characteristic of the flamenco style. It's intentional and it's superduper hard to do it right. It is not because it is difficult to hold the high note for a long time. It's made on purpose.

    Se escenifica una tragedia universal : no hay un padre presente, las "lágrimas del Nilo" te dicen que es un niño gitano, (=egipciano).o bien que ella es viuda (mitología de Isis y Osiris y el origen del rio Nilo )
    La madre se deshilacha sobre la cuna, desvelada noche tras noche, cuidando del niño, ella sola, ( de ahi el decorado de flecos rojos o simplemente es un Manton de Manila) y nos recuerda los poemas de García Lorca o Miguel Hernández (nanas de la cebolla) y las obras de Quintero, León y Quiroga
    El flamenco recoge una tradición musical religiosa judeocristiana y musulmana y el lamento del pueblo egipciano, y ahora se introduce un elemento pagano, qué es el ritual a la Luna, (madre o muerte a la que ella invoca para poder cuidar del niño depues de muerta)y el presentimiento de que ella va a morir pronto ,, todos ellos elementos típicos de Federico García Lorca
    La canción de Chanel nos llevó a Hispanoamérica, sin embargo Blanca Paloma nos lleva al flamenco, a la España Andalusi( que iba de Cádiz a Zaragoza) y la música de los pueblos que en ella coexistieron
    Finalmente, EA, Ea se usa para arrullar a un bebe pero también para animar (RAE) , y así en los tablaos flamencos se usa para decir :vamos, vamos, por eso el movimiento de la mano de ella, y el diferente ritmo entre la nana dirigida al niño y el resto de la canción (BP lo usa para arrullar pero también para jalear.)
    Gane o no, lo importante es que el flamenco es patrimonio cultural de la humanidad según la UNESCO y estará representado dignamente el sábado en Eurovisión.

    Me parece sorprendente que hasta ahora ningún análisis de la canción de Blanca Paloma haya abordado el evidente elefante rosa en la habitación. En todo el mundo, el rojo se asocia con la menstruación de la mujer y el blanco con el semen. Si leemos las letras de la canción, Blanca juega con una multitud de símbolos que representan el empoderamiento feminista, sin mencionar las implicaciones eróticas. Un niño es el resultado de un proceso que no puede separarse de la sexualidad, y está justo delante de la audiencia. Nada en el espectáculo de Blanca es casualidad, todo aquel que haya visto un ritual en la canción, espero que ahora vean más allá de la cortina roja.
    La simbología del color rojo y blanco con relación a la sexualidad y la menstruación es un tema presente en diversas culturas y religiones.
    Un saludo desde la provincia española de Ostwestfalen, un hispano-germano en tono humorístico.

      Hola Miguel Angel, que interesante lo que comentas.
      Hace poco, en una entrevista que hicieron a la coreógrafa del "rito" (porque no me atrevería a llamar baile a lo que sucede en esta puesta en escena) comentó que quería potenciar la conexión femenina, ya sea una conexión maternal, como una conexión sexual, de fertilidad e incluso de muerte. Es interesante como todas esas capas de significado existen en "eaea" sin ser evidentes, como en una poesía abstracta.

    After cha cha cha this feels boring and sounds like it belongs to some other culture and I would never listen anything like this on my free will, but maybe military can use this song when waterboarding and torturing enemy, he will give up and tell all his secret information as long as they promise to stop playing this song.

      Regarding the result ....it is clear for me that professional jury will favour Blanca Paloma and popular vote favour Cha cha cha.
      It's normal, I get it since it is necessary a special sensitivity to capturing its essence.Yet, it isn't imperative to be Spaniard to feel it, believe me!! the lyrics are pure poetry and the live performance is an art work.....
      Who knows, our uniqueness is our strength this year. We will see it.

      You may be right but don't you think that EaEa is pure show too? Then, you don't understand the symbolism of the story that she tells.
      The main difference is the elegance and simplicity shown in her performance with the only tool of her voice and emotion in some parts of the song, without any kind of musical ornaments.Simply put," A CAPELA" like it is said in Spain. That has merit.
      It's high time that countries show their cultural diversity in their own language and not in the ubiquitous Angloxajon one, as usual.
      Spain, along with few countries, sings in its own language which is without any doubt less commercial than English and of course...it doen't favour us but we are proud of that.
