  • We receive some devastating news about the cottage restoration. Scott goes magnet fishing. Katie Cooks: Tablet (a Scottish delicacy). Lee's Blu ray wall-case is finally finished and posted. We now have a pet deer; 'Brico' stays with us on a more permanent basis, and, as it is rutting season, the stags are back on the island. Scott also films some incredible drone footage above the island (including the deer).

    Lumberjack from Grimsby……brilliant
It’s beyond me why when 2 people want to do the right thing to a building, then someone wants to come in and basically vandalise a historic building…
You are breathing life back into it,and giving it a soul again…
Some have no idea of retaining history…
I’m totally on your side to restore it correctly

I’m so sorry to hear of the news regarding the restoration of the cottage. After all the work and progress you two have made over the past year and a bit, it use be very disheartening. Wishing you luck with your attempts to carry on the way it should be done. Hopefully Historic Scotland and some of the other agencies can help in this endeavour.

Hello from a fellow Grimbarian, although I now live on the other side of Louth.
I have spent the last couple of weeks working through all of your videos, starting at No.1. Fascinating stuff. I spent four years (way back, in the mid 60's) living on a Hebridean island, so this is a wonderful way for me to relive some of my own experiences. I wish you all the very best with what is to come. Stay strong, don't lose heart.

The important thing at present is to remain positive and be considered in your thoughts and deeds. Until the chimney is fixed and flashed you will continue to have damp at that stove location, its priority No1. The gable wall will have a solution but it needs to have your planned input. Your stonemason should be able to provide you with his considered scope of work based on his long experience. Also request a written detailed scope of work from the builder who is to undertake the work, with these you can at least start to negotiate. What is definitely unadvisable is for work to start without a detailed and considered and agreed scope of work because this is likely to be counter productive and consequently uneconomic in the event of remediation. It seems that the proposed work has not been seen or surveyed in-situ by the builder, highly unusual? Is the builder guaranteeing the work? If the builder is undertaking the work on the chimney, again request a written scope of work and a guarantee. Do not be put off with the use of modern materials and techniques they have their place but you need to know how they are to be deployed and they should be used sympathetically with the buildings history. Is it a listed building?

Shocking news and I do hope you find a conservation agency who will be willing to help. The damp you've uncovered in the main room should be strong arguement toward a proper conservation instead of just chucking a load of covering back on top. It makes me sad. Stunning drone photography!
I can't for the life of me understand why you have to put all of that internal stuff you ripped out back in. Why??? If that stuff is as recent as the 1970s then what possible historical value does it have? It was put in within living memory and is of limited historical value, particularly since it is not part of the much older external structure. It's not like you removed medieval wall paintings or Da Vinci's Last Supper! Losing a foot of space all round also makes the building less habitable. Which government body has told you to do this? Have you consulted an independent historic buildings expert who is also familiar with the relevant Scottish legislation? It would cost money but might be worth it in the long run. I truly hope you find a solution to your building issues because your channel it is so fantastic! ❤ps. remember to put a carbon monoxide detector in the room with the wood burning stove. 😃
