Rhyl was a fantastic place to be before circa 1995. I remember some great weekends there in the 80s and early 90s. Fantastic pubs, clubs, restaurants, arcades and would you believe, I once stayed in a very posh hotel in 1984! I think the decline started when the government at the time allowed the DSS to use B&B accommodation when there was a lack of social housing. Suddenly every man and his dog realised they could move to the seaside, stay in B&Bs and the DSS would pay housing benefit. So a win-win situation, the B&B owners get a regular income, the DSS guest gets bed and breakfast 365 days of the year at the seaside, but that only attracted the transient, so instead of holiday makers with cash to spend, these seaside resorts slowly turned into towns with a population on welfare and no spare cash to spend.

It may be hard to believe now but, back in the 1980s, Rhyl was heaving with visitors and a popular holiday destination. In Ocean Beach, it had a fairly decent amusement park, probably the main draw of any resort for day trippers. There was also the Rhyl Sun Centre, a wet attraction akin to Blackpool's Sandcastle, and a BMX facility.
Sad to say but the best thing about Rhyl these days is the road out.

Its sad to say this but most of our seaside towns have been slowly crumbling for decades through under investment from government.
Its been twenty years since I visited the town and I don't think I will return any time soon.
I'd much rather go to the main honey-pots in Snowdonia or even Aberystwyth prom and pier. 😀

It is all over the country. In the past forty years of travelling I have come to see wreck after wreck of places that once were amazing to visit, that in the hands of doped up councillors, that is all I can think of their mentality, all is ruined

Oh my days Rhyl has gone down quite a bit....I remember going there as a kid in the 80's and it was a busy bustling seaside. I remember every arcade, shops & pleasure rides being packed solid with visitors, not to mention The Tropical Caribbean Garden you could walk through, it had every tropical plants from the Caribbean in there. So sad to see Ryhl like this :(

Rhyl is not the seaside town it was, but it has improved to what it became in the 90's and 00's. It is a shadow of it's former self. I Loved my Rhyl holidays in the very early 80's as a child.

Love visiting Rhyl.My Hubby's car broke down the other week and we managed to park up on the road.Whilst awaiting recovery The people who saw we were having problems came out of their houses and offered us cups of tea, chairs to sit on and even a Car! We were on our way to Deganwy to see family.
Rhyl is being regenerated with investment into the town.
I do a Power Walk from east to west Rhyl when in Wales.
Some cracking priced properties in Rhyl.
Some good retail parks in the Town too.
As for it being quiet it's the same in other Towns My Son says the same about Llandudno at night.

Hi Stephen, we used to take the kids to Rhyl late 70s early 80s it wasn't too bad then. My parents also took me and my late brother there too, had some great holidays there in the 60s. The old building there knocking down was once the Queens Hotel had live entertainment on years ago and was a quite nice place, big hotel too. The other old building that's B&M Bargains was Woolworths. Thanks for some good memories, I think I'd give it a swerve now.👍

Hubby and I watch all your content about Blackpool (thank you so much for all you do.) We both grew up in Rhyl, moved away eleven years back. The town clock is leaning but was made safe, took them an age to finish. Our son and family still live there (not in the clock) 😂 The telephone exchange looked that bad even when it was used! The new police station is outside St Asaph. The sky tower was from the Glasgow Garden Festival, we used to think it was amazing. The fun fair was at the end of the prom and closed when we were there, it’s now a small retail park. Lots to tell you if you need more info.

Drugs and Low-cost foreign holidays destroyed Rhyl. The problem continues on because the town is full of halfway houses for ex-prisoners and the vulnerable which has prolonged its status as a go-to for county lines dealers from Liverpool and Manchester. Seems a lot of towns in that part of North-East Wales have the same issues. The last time i went there i legit saw someone getting their door done in with the big red key and about 10 coppers flying in.

Sadly Blackpool has deteriorated, not a place I would even consider for a weekend break. I remember Rhyl from the sixties and early seventies, we stayed on the caravan park in Towyn, it was so lovely then, the outdoor lido, the tower clock on the roundabout was sat in the beautifully landscaped promenade. I’ll never understand how places like this get so bad, have we completely lost all sense of civic pride. I live in Wigan and that’s gone to the dogs.

I miss Rhyl so much. Moved away two years ago. I'd like to point out a few things.
Firstly you've gone at a bad time. Nobody is going to be in the high street after the shops have closed.
Most of the buildings you showed are currently being demolished/redeveloped.
Dig deeper into Rhyl and the surrounding areas and you will find absolutely stunning views, nature reserves and places with amazing personality.
Rhyl gets a bad rap but there are so many places that are worse 😊

Right back in 79/80 they built a Monorail Train track, from one end of the prom by Splash point
all the way up to the Harbour, with a Station, opposite the Clock tower, on the Prom, all of this 30ft up in the Air?
It was Only Open for a Year or Two, and then closed, after spending £m on it, took 5yrs, to demolish it, we used to go into the
Station, via a Stairs set, still Accessible, to climb up, Blue, Red, Green windows, all around the Station, concrete Pillars
Holding up the tracks, all the way up the Prom

The Town Hall clock does lean, i remember as a kid in about 1980 it was a "thing" in the local press but apart from being sandblasted clean i don't think anything was done. The road on which it stands is Wellington Rd, Russell Rd is further out. Like most GB seaside resorts Rhyl has seen better days & cheap flights to sunnier climes hasn't helped. It's an ok place to live.

Have many great memories of living and working in Rhyl during the mid to late 80s. To me it will always be great and much of Rhyl I re still looks the same especially the arcade on the front. They haven’t changed at all with the same signage. It is run down in certain places but I believe they are slowly spending money to improve things. They have improved the harbour area at the far end of the prom which looks great 👍

I have yet to see this video, but a few years ago I was passing through Rhyl, and what a dive. My grandmother lived in Rhyl and we as kids, in the fifties, onwards, spent some amazing times in Rhyl, then a sedate place, really sedate, and a fun fair that was just right size. At a weekend all the drunks and druggies going around, throughout the night, shouting and bawling, rubbish bins are sprawled everywhere. The funfair was torn down, looked like a bomb at hit it, and surrounding area.

Rhyl used to be a gret place in the 60s/70s, but it has deteriated since then, I called in last year, whilst we were staying in Llandudno, which is a beautiful seaside resort, the beat in Wales, because the Mostyn Estates whot own Llandudno, makes sure that the buildings are kept pristeen and have a strict planning programme for any new buildings, to blend it with the ret of the achetecture.
I doubt Rhyl will ever get back to what it used to be, as it is so run down., it is too run down and developers wont invest in the place, because the lack of counil and government funding.

I moved to Rhyl in the 70's from a small village called Bodelwyddan. Rhyl has gone down hill 😢. The clock, I think started leaning in the 80s. 2 wks ago there was metal frames around the clock, so maybe it's going to be fixed. You were right about telephone exchange and they have tidied up with benches and flowers. The buildings you have seen partly knocked down, have all gone. Sussex St where Weatherspoons is the market there has been knocked down. They should have started building but they ran out of money 😮. A lot of shops have gone from the high st as well 😢. You should come back to Rhyl and see for yourself. It's really sad. Blackpool. I love ❤. Rhyl take note!

Queens arcade which is the buildings you showed being knocked down, used to be similar to the base of the Blackpool tower. Amazing ballroom, and also had had a Venice style river running in the basement that visitors could ride through on boats. Sadly Rhyl has seen better days, and I do feel the investment may be a case of "too little, too late", as it's reputation will have put generations of people off visiting again.

In the 1970's Rhyl had 3 theatres on the promenade. Absolutely bustling place. Sadly forign holidays led to the decline. The first building that you looked at with the B & M store was a Woolworth's 2 storey shop. The tower has been closed for a good 10 yrs and was going to be demolished until a petition kept it. It now lights up of a night in different colours. The building site was arcades with planning permission for town houses ro be erected.

Really was a good place to go 70s and 80s since then gone down in my opinion due to, The travelling work Dodgers who said to themselves might as well be unemployed at the seaside rather than elsewhere I’ve noticed this with Blackpool as well.

Poor old Rhyl. It’s a shadow of its former self. We have fond memories of it and I hope the money being poured in helps it to recover. Thanks for your tour. 🍻

Les and Rita's are still in business, Funfair closed in 2007, Sky Tower... No longer functional and a night lighting feature now... The only constant is change.

I used to go in the 60's, with the St John's Ambulance Cadets, for our weekend, get together, thay would come from all over the place, and we would stay at the miners Holiday camp, there was no water in the pool, so they played football in it instead, there was a Derelict Funfair on the Pier, you could see the sea though the missing Bords, but they was building a new Funfair at the time, it had lovely sea front, there was a petrol station with a big Shark hung up out side, the camp had old wooden Chalets, that was the last time I visited Rhyl, many moons ago, but always had a good time,

OMG! This is so sad to see it like this ,to be honest had a ride through on Sunday and my stomache turned, absolutely derelict. We always came to sunny Rhyl every year for a fortnight's holiday at the time we used to stay in a camp Robinsons next to Golden Gate,we would come the same weeks every year and we'would stay in caravan C69 with a parrot in the window "stuffed one". Now this used to be so busy infact absolutely packed from 1 camp to the next, and Rhyl well everybody used to be on top of one and other, like blooming ants, rockers and mods, kiss me quick, kiss me slowly hat's,candy floss, open swimming pool, arcades packed to high heaven, the main fair ground gone,it's just turning into a shopping centre. Well I suppose all generations change along with everything else, but my memories of holidays in Rhyl from the age are just the Happiest ever of my child hood,I was born 1959 I was around 8 when we started going on hols this went on til I was 15 along with my sisters, and we would walk for miles, but we were safe we felt safe, and the best of it I only lived nr wrexham. Happy happy memories

Rhyl is still a place to look forward to visiting even if passing through. Nowadays though maybe it just needs some investment to give the seaside resort some special features and originality to complement nice nearby towns such as Prestatyn and Conwy.
