The world of digital guitar right now seems to be trending in the direction of "Profiling" or "Capturing" - the advent of Neural Amp Modeler - Steve Atkinson's FREE plugin has seen the price of profiling/capture plummet from the £1600 of Kemper/Neural DSP - through the £400 of ToneX - straight to £0 - meaning that things could change pretty quickly!

One interesting fact about NAM: it's released under the "MIT" open source license, which is considered to be very business friendly. That means anybody can use the software, modify as pleased, incorporate it into their own software, sell it and make profit of it. So nothing would for example stop Line6 to add the NAM technology to the Helix line of products tomorrow.

A website will be launching soon.
Things are moving quickly here. About a month or so ago I was quite excited that Capture/Profile tech was now available in plugin form with ToneX, meaning it was more affordable than ever before.
NAM has made some quick advances in the last week even, that mean that this FREE Capture/Profile plugin means there's NO barrier to entry for folks wanting to get in on this Capture/Profiling game.
It feels like potentially what was once a USP for various companies is now becoming super commonplace....

I think the most annoying part about Neural is the way they are responding to their customers at this point, even in a simple thread in their support page. Yesterday I had a question about adding a midi controller and I went to their website , someone asked a same question and was frustrated that why the manual is not explaining about it then some one from Neural came back to him with FULL of ego, like in a rude way that why you are disrespecting the company and everybody is working hard in their company😅 then they blocked the guy in the thread! I haven't seen such a thing in my life. At least in the west as much as I know companies grow around customers and companies should respect the feedback. We bought a QC we didn't marry your product neural dsp😅

I had a similar issue in the Neural forum, where I was seeking help from the group because Neural support wasn't responding to my emails. A mod went on, deleted all my messages where I talked about Neural not responding, closed the forum, and then banned me for 24 hours. I went onto The Gear Page to talk about my experience and within 12 hours, my 24-hour ban was extended to my account getting permanently suspended. They really do their best to police bad PR. I wonder, if they spent half the time they spent scrubbing the internet of bad PR on providing the promised options and good support, they might have a decent reputation.

    • @hollywoodactress

Not cool, you can easily lose brand credibility and customers from poor customer engagement and responses.
Social media is great to rocket people and brands to the top but you can just as easily fall back down.
I always think, everyone should look at feedback from a positive view point. I don’t mean only take the good feedback but learn from the not so good (negative) feedback.
Be open and honest in your reply, if you can’t do something say why and what the plans are to change it if it is in the pipeline.

it's seriously, seriously good. i profiled my engl blackmore's default settings, and that's all i would have ever used tonex for: get that thing into my DAW, sandwiched by helix native instances. i have close to zero interest in other people's captures, i'd much rather have models of gear i don't own so i can find my own settings on that gear, but for the gear i own and barely touch the knobs anymore, this basically means i don't have to go to the basement and bother my amps anymore if i want to record them.

  • @DrProgNerd

It seems to me that a disproportionate amount of captures are lacking quality across the communities, but I'm excited to see how this grows. I like the idea that we aren't beholden to one particular company to trickle out promised updates at their leisure. Instead we benefit from a world of creators continuously working the bugs out. I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.

Sounds pretty good for free. I have been wrestling with Logic direct sounds for years. I managed to get some great clean blues sounds using the built in Tube EQ, Compressor, Space Designer using stock IR's then 'verb of choice. Any grit added with a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 or Nobel's ODR Mini. I never liked the Logic built in Amplifiers. I like the concept of 'good tone on a budgdet'. The key of course is the pickups for sure. I like the Full Rigs. This is for me the most honest way of capturing a tone. IRs kinda add foreign post amp colouring. If someone captures a whole rig, this is actually what you would end up in a studio and you can EQ it only in post. There is nothing wrong with that at all if the capture was optimal, maybe with a TS in front and real sweet spot mic placement. I like how easy it becomes. These Meshuggah rigs are sick, for example for Rhythm tone. If someone figured it out in his home studio, I can exactly replicate that and that saves so much time. Everyone has to find out for him/herself.

To be clear, NAM, nor Tonex, model a tone stack and probably also the Quad Cortex. The EQ controls seen, are post amp profile meant as active studio EQ for cuts and boosts which offer quick tone shaping but not any specific amp tone stack. Tonex has a lot of pretty graphics that would allude to it being having control for an actual amp's gain/tonestack EQ knobs, but they are all just static captures of an amp's state. I have no idea what the Kemper does in that regard, but its probably just added pre and post DSP offered by the Kemper unit.

For years - I fumbled around and tried out inexpensive amp modeling, Bias FX, Amplitube, Thu, etc. Never getting a satisfactory tone. I decided I was going to spend some money and get a proper setup. Was considering Kemper, Helix, and decide to go with Quad Cortex. I use it almost daily, and couldn’t be happier. I have had a microphone with 2 guitars hooked up to it, used it as a computer interface with my iPad to create a monster looper with Loopy Pro, and can geek out learning how to shape guitar tones and experiment. It does so much and is a joy to use, and it is beautiful on my desk when not in use.

I think captures will eventually die down when amp models start leveraging the digital domain to create new tones that aren't practical or possible in traditional tube amps. S-Gear is a good example of how amp models can have much more tone flexibility than captures. Captures are kind of the fashion of the day, leveraging machine learning to reproduce existing tube amp settings in an accessible way. But that's not going to drive innovation to create new tones that generate fan interest.

Not knocking Kemper or Neural or IK multimedia, their capture software is cool and there is nothing wrong with their units/software, but NAM is as good and has potential to actually be better for capturing, so it s a bit fiddly to use currently? its free FFS. If you are willing to spend 300-1000 just so you dont have to work out some very simple set up issues, then I hope you can afford it.
The hype around Neural DSP stuff in particular is very annoying, Amp plugins running at 100-200 for one amp plugin? I mean that is taking the piss if you ask me, and I don't care how good it is (not as good as my NAM profiles lmao).
Neural DSP, to me is an example of hype and NAM proves that. Its as good if not better , and has much more versatility due to the amount of profiles you can load in. Neural DSP actually make really good stuff too, so as much as there is hype, they make good stuff (and their really is) "dude you have to try neural dsp and see what is possible bro" ...F*ck Off lool
No I have to be smart and use NAM and not pay through the nose to recreate amplifiers I already have or amplifiers I might even never otherwise be able to play. Because when you thin about it, if a company is charging you 200 for an amp plugin , you buy 2 or 3 of these and you might as well go get an Amp. Amp plugins (modelers or amp sim) are convenience tools for in the box recording really and ad hoc practice set ups. Charging 200 for 1 is actually taking the piss.
So part of me is actually glad to see NAM challenge the neural DSP hype.
Because at the end of the day ML Sound lab and Audio Assault make amp plugins for 5-30 each and many of those are good enough to put on official releases, further highlighting what a lot of Hype Neural DSP is, despite it being good quality tools.
This is not even a pop at Neural DSP's amps, they sound great, but the pricing is total BS.
I bet you see their plugins go from 100-200 to something like 30-100 because of NAM

Personally I typically prefer using hardware than vsts for guitar tones specifically. One consideration is latency.
That said, to me NAM accuracy (I've mostly tested direct amp tones without cab/mic in the capture other than obviously the impedance response) seems considerably better than Kemper, for what threshold of improvement Kemper can't touch at least/is left. Better than Quad cortex also, and even tonex, even if by a small margin comparatively.
So for me... Not only is NAM amazing for being "free". But for what I care about, it actually seems to do a considerably better job than all hardware and software alternatives I've tried. The one thing I'm waiting for is some kind of hardware to run captures on.

I stand by my prediction in 2021. The Quad Cortex will not be around much longer. Neural will attempt to support it but their revenue streams for it will falter in comparison with both its plugins and the competition. They promised and promised and 3 years later there is no evidence of porting the plugs in as they advertised as well as many other features they promised. They bit off way more than they can chew. People will opt for TONEX or NAM for capturing and maybe even now the Headrush Prime. NeuralDSP's business model simply doesn't work. Why give free code upgrades for the QC and spend so much time into the product when they can continue to gain cash hand over fist by selling plugins. If someone has a QC I would sell it yesterday.

For guitarists the game changes every 15 minutes.
New guitar, new pickups, latest OD pedal, latest Delay pedal, latest digital box, etc etc etc.
And in the end after decades of the exhausting journey, you sound like yourself whatever you plug into!
