Sounds really good !! I am currently playing with another machine learning code from GuitarML (also open source). I am actually doing some neural model from a component based circuit simulation (SPICE) instead of doing an amp capture. So it is like going from schematics to neural net plugin, and it only takes about 1h to do the whole process. Quite amazing. GuitarML Proteus plugin also allows capturing the effect of a single knob (gain or tone for example) by doing 5 captures with increasing settings. Pretty cool stuff and it sounds really good.

I think everyone likes accurate recreations, with all the knobs and bells and whistles, of real amps but NAM really does a fantastic job. I don't think you need to sift through a ton of profiles (even though there are a ton of them!) to get a great usable tone that can be quickly taylored to your taste via some eq, pedals, cab loader of choice, etc. One thing that I think might be a cool update would be an eq section that is, as a whole, based on preset eq curves of various amps, not necessarily the captured amp, as it seems to be static frequencies atm....just some wishful thinking! lol Really enjoying it so far.

I've been part of the NAM since early days and I think NAM generally nails the overall sound. Where I think there is something missing is the in-between stuff such as sag and compression of when you first hit a note etc.

Being open source though, I _imagine_ the potential exists to do an extensive capture of one amp and develop the code necessary to extrapolate the small steps between each setting combination - ultimately building an extremely accurate blend of profiling and modelling. Of course it helps if you amp, like mine, has only a gain and a tone control - meaning the number of combinations is far more limited than on some amps with more complex combinations.

You had to buy the hardware, but it would load open source files and even synths and all kinds of midi stuff, etc.. I thought it was a good idea at least, but I'm not sure it will ever take off. They, the hardware company I'm speaking of that I can't remember the name of allowed all of their code to be released so anyone could write for it.. I've not seen it lately, so it might already be gone. It was about the size of the Line 6 small modeler..

I've got very mixed feelings about the whole capture/profile thing. I've played around with the Proteus a bit, and just recently this. They can sound really amazing, for sure. And a quick way to get a good tone, providing it was a good capture (I'm not sure of the whole capture process and how dependent it is on the competence of someone dialing in a sound). But at the end of the day, I still prefer modeling...of the WHOLE amp. Something like a Boogie Mark series, with all its push-pull switches, or the MK V with all the toggles for different modes...I want access to all that for making my own sounds as well.

Well, the capturing thing seems to be the new frontier for all those involved with modelers and similar stuff. I've tried just yesterday some tones with my 10 years old Kemper and it's still up to the task. I've got a Tonex in the meanwhile ...why? Technology is evolving day by day and if something comes out doing that very same thing but with a modern technology producing even a slightly better result than the previous tools then we can only be happy. This plugin goes in the very same direction and the limit is now the sky. All that said, a proper tweaking of tones will still be left for a while to those owning a hardware machine like Fractal, Kemper or QC ....with the next step of profiling/modelling just those tweaked tones to be then shared, paid or free, with the community. At the end of the day we all "work" with snapshots of sounds that we have heard on certain songs and that we want to make ours while playing so if one can get something the closest possible to those snapshots that we have in our head why not ? Yes, things are definitely changing for musicians ...for the best I guess🙂

to make a comparison to synth plugins, it's like having a 'preset player' which you have to scroll through/buy profiles/presets instead of having all the settings at your disposal to craft something of your own, nothing wrong with either approach, i just prefer the latter

I've been experimenting with NAM since you told me about it Leon and although it needs to be able to work far more efficiently with less of a load on the CPU, the sound quality I am hearing surpasses what I'm used to from amp modeling at any level. I tested ToneX as well and found NAM to be superior in terms of quality. I'm pushing for stereo operation (as usual) and I also would love a stereo hardware pedal to host NAM.
I agree with you that the UI needs to be designed so you can more easily locate the profile you need without endless scrolling / auditioning. Perhaps some powerful AI filtering system that uses prompts to find the perfect profile. There are some obvious superior profile makers out there and that can help to find what you're looking for much faster. The big thing that interests me in regards to IK's hardware approach to emulation ala the AXE I/O USB interface line? Basically can be pretty much summed up in two words:
    "input impedance" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I really dig amp sims, but I also really dig the physically tactile "feeling" of pushing an amp's input with a chain of traditional "front of amp" analog pedals, and within my attempts I've come to realize that not all digital interface "Hi-Z" inputs are created equal.
Typically I've noticed that Jfet based interface preamps, or when using say an 18 volt fet based preamp or boost pedal? That seems to help mitigate some of the overall input clipping headroom issues with some recording interfaces, but it's hit and miss at best depending on the unit itself.
I'm somewhat intrigued by the "Z-tone" impedance adjustment and Jfet input voicing feature on the IK AXE I/O units, and while I haven't yet personally demoed one yet?
I think IK is technically trying to address a core issue that's led to my prior personal biases towards embracing digital amp software. One mostly spawned from many attempts at making gain related analog dirt pedals and digital amp sims convincingly play well together? Ya dig? I Dunno. Maybe it's just me?
Much like Fuzz pedals can sometimes be the overall end all equalizer when judging a "good" amp? Regardless if it's tube or solid state?
I sometimes feel like perhaps the home digital recording interface market has only just recently begun catching up to the true overall potentials of amp software within the terms of comparable input impedance reactivity. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I really hope that whole nerdy gear rant made sense to someone! LMAO!
    Anyway...
    Great content as always Leon!

NAM is the only way I can get excellent simulated amp natively under Linux.

i was never a fan of "capture" methods for the simple reason that they don't "behave" like the real thing as for example a mark series amp would behave when you change the pre-gain eq. that's only done with component based modeling. also capture is a dead end as far as all the other stuff a rig has like effects pedals etc the only thing i ever used in that method is tonematching guitars with FAS like an acoustic guitar to then use the IR over an electric di signal for "emulating" the real acoustic. i think the whole deal is over hyped and i dont see many artists using this stuff and kemper users keep diminishing.
i will agree though that this thing seems very capable and the closest i've heard to the target. also being free is a great thing. i for one wouldnt pay much for that sort of method

Reboot your mac, sometimes it happens with plugins from “non official mac devs”

also don’t use input gain and output gain on the plugin, its buggy at the moment. input gain leads to artifacts, output gain leads to heavy aliasing

GuitarML has a similar open source software to NAM, and he has also done a video on building it into a home made physical pedal using Raspberry Pi: ua-cam.com/video/dFMsWW0uC7w/v-deo.html

I’m disappointed, where’s your O face and clickbait title? 😂 That’s cool you had a good experience. Mine was not so great, just super buggy and after 5 minutes of constantly being asked for microphone permission and also having the latency keep resetting to an unplayable 512 samples, I realized I didn’t have the time or patience to deal with something open source. I think it’s a very cool project and commend Steve, but I’d just rather pay for something that works and doesn’t need to bypass my computers security features since it’s not validated. Call me crazy, but convenience is something I’m willing to pay for 🤷‍♂️🥳

If you are searching for the O-Face and the clickbait title, MY VIDEO HAS YOU COVERED! 😛 But in all seriousness, we are all guilty of the Ghost-BJ at times.
And yes, NAM is a super tinker-y plugin, the learning curve is hard to overcome - but once you're there, there's no turning back.
I am so fed up with ToneX, since there is no visual representation on how my model training is going. Frustrating to waste an hour just to find out it sounds muffled and 0% like the actual ReAmping-Chain. NAM offers this - after spending time to get to know it. That, to me, is real convenience.
But this is no knock on you - different strokes for different folks, all good.

I don't see a reason to even try this (even though I tried). Line 6 helix does everything better. Period :D
