A guide to Barn Owl nest boxes

- The Barn Owl is a Red-listed Bird of Conservation Concern in Ireland. Declines in their populations are linked to the intensification of farming practices which have resulted in a reduction in the quality and quantity in foraging habitat as well as the loss of nest sites. Providing nest boxes for Barn Owls in areas of suitable habitat can benefit their populations and this measure has worked extremely well in Ireland, with over 150 nest boxes now used by Barn Owl throughout the country. This video provides all the information to allow you to decide whether you have a suitable location for a Barn Owl nest box and how to build, install and monitor the nest box to provide benefits to Barn Owls in your area.
This video is used as a resource for farmers who wish to adopt the Barn Owl Nest Box Action as an Agri-Environment Scheme measure to ensure that nest boxes are provided to a high standard and to maximise the benefits to Barn Owls and biodiversity. You should not attempt to construct or install a nest box without the necessary experience and this video is aimed at farmers who have the relevant experience and as part of the Agri-environment Scheme.
If you have installed a Barn Owl nest box, we would be very grateful if you registered the nest box with us (BirdWatch Ireland), which allows us to determine the number of nest boxes in place, and the number that are used by Barn Owls and where efforts may be best directed in future. You can register your nest box here: survey123.arcgis.com/share/f0...

Very interesting video.
Excellent presentation 👏 👌 Thanks
I've rounded up my secondary school goers to show them this and instructed them to make me owl nest boxes for my christmas present! I am fortunate enough to live in the country side and there are a number of empty hay sheds and abandoned buildings which would provide excellent locations for boxes. However, we live near enough to a national secondary road and I've heard these are not great locations for encouraging owls to occupy nest boxes. I have seen barn owls in flight so they are in the area.
Fantastic Gwen, that is a good way to put them to work and hopefully result in some nice Christmas presents for you....and the owls! It sounds like you already have some suitable locations in mind but let us know if we can help with anything along the way. In terms of the distance to the road, secondary roads present far less of a problem and the risk of vehicle collision is much lower on secondary roads compared to motorways and dual carriageways, so I think given that you have suitable locations for the nest boxes and that you have seen Barn Owls in the area (and you have some helpers to build the boxes) then it sounds like a great idea, best of luck with it and get in touch at any stage if we can help.
.😊😅
I have a,suitable area and have seen owls , but only trees to put up on , how do I get them
I have a tree in my front yard about 4m tall, is it not good enough, e.g. too close to human residence or too short the tree, to put on a house for Owls ?
Great video😁
Thank you David, much appreciated
Great video! Any plans available for the nest boxes?

@@BirdWatchIreland Excellent thanks 😊
How do I know what kind of ol's I have near me
What cameras do you use in the boxes?
Hi Jax E, we use several different types of cameras in and on nests to monitor breeding pairs, most of the nest footage used in this video is from a Reolink camera, I hope this helps
No ventilation holes ot floor drainage?
Hi Dee K, drainage holes are not required for interior nest boxes, however for exterior nest boxes we do drill four 8mm holes in the floor of the nest box.
