Building an Owl Nest Box for the Barred Owl in the Canadian Wilderness

- The Barred Owl's range extends across eastern North America. The northern most part of it's range includes the area of my cabin. I occasionally see these owls and consider them one of my favourite animals.
A friend of mine is a bird expert, and suggested that I build an Owl Nest Box on the property. I researched various plans, and used materials that I had at the cabin to complete the build.
The structure is quite simple and consists of a 13x13" floor plan with walls approximately 23" tall. The hole is 7" diameter. For my owl nest box, I used boards I had sawn for the wood shed, and made the roof out of cedar planks.
From what I have read, these boxes do best when they are within 200 feet of water, and near a forest that is somewhat immature. Owls will normally nest in hollowed tree trunks of large trees. In forests that do not provide this habitat, the owl nest box can be a nesting option for the owls.
I may be a bit late in the season to attract a nesting female, but the box is now up and I am hopeful that I will see owls in it one day.

Great job. Can’t wait to see a video with an owl in it. Thank you for sharing. ✌️
Here's hoping! :)
One of the first things friends will say when they come to visit "Ah the peace and quite", they have no idea what they are in for with the barred owls, coyotes, and the eagles cackling at night along with the loons looning lol....Thanks for the video and helping out the owls. Logging companies clear cut across from my place over 6 years ago so 500 acres or more was lost to some of our woodland friends. I'm amazed at just how fast the clear cut is growing back.....
So true! There has been so much clear cutting here as well. Most of the public land has been largely clear cut, or in the early stages of regrowing. Old growth is mostly limited to a few private woodlots in my area. You are also right about the sounds - the chorus of nature still plays despite the challenges that have been placed to the habitat. Happy Easter!
Must be the best built owl box in history, it’ll last many generations. 👍🏼
What a great idea ! Honestly I had no idea they’d nest in a man made house. But I guess I’ve never thought that much into it or I would’ve figured it out. Lol. Great video ! Take care Jonathan
I did not know either! A friend of mine studies various birds and made the suggestion. We will see if they like this house or not ;)
I love watching the owls. Thank you for posting the videos.
I found this to be quite enjoyable ✌
Thanks, Dan!
That is a beautiful owl. Thanks for helping it out!
Got to help the living creatures, aquatic and avian too
I must have have blinked - didn't see a single owl.
Howdy Brother- really nice job on the owl house. You still are getting snow up there. It’s really beginning to turn green down in the South. I kinda dread the summer heat. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Still some snow but winter is on its way out, despite several feet still on the ground! It's a nice time of year though - more daylight + warmer temps. God bless you too!
Great idea. Hopefully, it works there eh! Video of it being used would be awesome... I've put out wood duck boxes with some luck and Martin boxes with no luck so far...
Thanks for sharing
Same with wood duck boxes - I have had some luck. Would be very nice to see this owl house get some use. Hope to share some footage someday!
Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪 to you and your family and subscriber's. Thanks for a lovely video. New subscriber 👍
Thanks Mark! What part of Ireland? I've great friends there.

Nice, I visit Kildare yearly. Love it there
@@PenniacWilderness see ya in naas next time ❤️
Good for you Jonathan, taking care of our feathered friends. Are you planning on putting a camera on the inside to view the chicks. Take care
HI Tom - It could be neat to see that footage, I will see if the house gets any use over the next few years. I hope it does!
"Take care"?
Why? is putting a camera in a dangerous activity?
It was a great job! Have owls settled in this house?
Looks great, but didn’t see the little wood slats on the inside that help the baby owls climb out. Maybe I missed that.
nice!
Скворешник гарный, хоть самому в нем селись...мебели нехватает.
Always wondered, do you pronounce the owl: Bard or Bar-red? Anyways, the house looks great! How much for rent!? Until you pass through again, have fun. JB 😆
I say Bard, but I'm not sure what's right! Ha! Rent is free ;)
Bard, because of the stripes/bars on its feathers
@@davidhensley76 that make sense, thanks! 🦉
@@davidhensley76 In which case it would be 'barred' wouldn't it. Unless of course, the owls write poetry.
Just curious. Your box is 14” at the base. Barred owls have a wing span of up to 50” and have 3 super active chicks each year. How do you expect a family of 5 to fit in there? If you get a great horned owl in there, it’s even worse.
Awesome! Any plans to do a bat box?
Thinking of that and a bird box too!
Very nice but how do you keep squirrels from taking over the nest?
Hopefully the owl takes care of that 😉
You are going to have some midnight hooting. Fitting for a night at the cabin.
I’m curious on why you start the nail on a different piece of wood and then take it out and then put it in the project?
I was dulling the tip of the nail so it's less likely to split the wood.
@@PenniacWilderness good idea
How do you treat the wood so it lasts longer?
Many different ways, but keeping it dry goes a long way too
Lucky owl. My house isn't that nice 😂
Ha! You can have it in the off season?
@@PenniacWilderness Thanks I'll probably take a bath in the stream too
