    Do you think if I get a squirrel 🐿️ house nesting box and a owl box maybe 🤔 the squirrel's won't steal the owl box because I want to get a owl box and a squirrel box idk I also have a woodpecker that has been hanging out for three years I wish the boxes were cheaper or I could build 😂

    We built our woodpecker house right out my window , we have red belly wood peckers ours hang no squirrels can get to it :) only cost 💲 7.00 to build 2 of them they love it! And I love watching them. No owls yet but never know we are putting up another one.

      There is many ways to build these, I wouldn’t spend the money you did and I get the results. I’m just say.

      Good for you. I made some woodpecker and owl boxes out of pine years ago but they didn't last so long but they do work. Get owls and woodpecker every year in the cedar boxes - nest boxes provide a lot of entertainment for us and housing for the birds. BB

    Where I live in Northern New England we have a lot of woods and I have a lot of grey squirrels around. So I like to know where I can get a squirrel box that we can put up on the trees

      @@MyBackyardBirding cool thank you very much for getting back with me. We also have one red squirrel. I rescued it as and abandoned baby in the middle of my driveway last spring. There's a perch inside so they can look out the hole? Please describe inside perch. Thank You.

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  2 роки тому

      Just a narrow piece of wood about 3 inches below the hole and one inch out from the wall will do the trick. If not they will sit in the hole or the woodies will cling to the wall. BB

    Does it affect the bird if you put a metal plate around the opening so the squirrel can’t chew through

      No and that's a good thing really, some nest boxes come with a metal plate. BB

    Very informative video all around and I appreciate you taking the time to edit and post it. I'm fortunate to have a pair of Eastern Screech Owls living in my back yard habitat. Curiosity made me install a camera in one of the boxes "just to see" what they do in there during the day and hopes they would use it to raise a family. Last year the female prepared the nest box (made a bowl in the pine straw) and when it was time to lay eggs she moved into a Squirrel box in my neighbors yard. Both returned this year so my fingers are crossed they use one of my nest boxes with the cameras in it (I have 3 boxes total and 4 cameras in them). The only downside to where my nest boxes are installed is they're 150' from my computer but I took the time to bury PVC conduit to all 3 of them and ran the cable for the camera's and power. Curious if you know the footage limitations for the USB camera's you are using in yours....I want to explore more options for a better picture and sound quality for my live stream I do on UA-cam.

      My usb cameras are only 15' but I see they sell 100' etc on Amazon with boosters that might work - never tried it: amzn.to/2SFroD0

    Can you find any of these cedar nest boxes anywhere else other than Amazon

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  6 років тому +1

      Stovall doesn't have a web site - they seem pretty low profile - Amazon usually has the best prices but google around and you'll probably find them somewhere else.

    Hi Do you have more than one owl box? Will they run each other off? What about woodpeckers? We just moved into a house that has a screech owl box. They returned. I am in sanibel.

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  4 роки тому

      You need to have pretty good separation between owl boxes kind of depends on the lay of surrounding land but at least 100 yards i would estimate. Have fun! BB

    Would using metal opening protectors prevent squirrels from entering?? I know snakes are a bitch, but where I am at snakes are not a problem.

    I made a nice "Squirrel Condo" last year & it was quite entertaining . . . . UNTIL they got up under the hood of my truck & chewed up coolant lines, & the wire bundle that lays in the middle of the engine, Which they did TWICE!! At over $600.00 a pop, that was the end. No more provision for the Rats with Fuzzy Tails!

      I hate woodpeckers, too. They made a hole in eaves under my roof. I had to get it repaired. They’re too noisy if you need to sleep during the day. Ultrasound sonars detracted from my property.

    Will raccoons climb up tree and kill babies. Want to put owl box up in our woods.

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  5 років тому

      I have had trouble with squirrels getting into mine on trees and even buildings if they can reach it and taking them over for their own use. I'm unable to use owl boxes on trees and have to keep the branches away from the boxes on the gable ends where the owls nest. Depending on squirrel density you may be OK.

      Shoot the raccoons and squirrels they will disturb the birds nest and eat the baby birds! You can use bait also with some poison peanuts that they sell at Home Depot, to get rid of varments !

    If you install metal plates around the box hole, that would make it impossible for squirrels to enlarge the hole.
    Not sure about how to defend the box from snakes though...
