How to Choose the Right Location for Your Barred Owl Nesting Box

- When it comes to late fall birding, we love getting set up for owls, particularly our barred owls. As one of the more popular owl species here in Ontario, they are plentiful here in the Ottawa area but getting the opportunity to spot one can definitely take a little bit of work.
These large raptors are reclusive by nature (as are most owls), often most active during the night. That said, these majestic owls are often spotted on their perch during daylight hours, catching up on their rest ahead of their busy evening activities.
The opportunity to spot and get somewhat close to a barred owl is typically reserved for areas that already have a decent amount of human foot traffic such as public areas, parks and forest trails. Outside of that, barred owls will often retreat at the sound of human footsteps or any other disturbances.

Great, I have Barred owls all around me. I have a camera in my backyard and I watch a Barred owl that sits on my gate at night crush rats and mice. Awesome to watch , lightning fast. I think I'll make a nesting box or buy one.
awesome, they have really adapted to know that bird feeders attract their food supply, :0) , enjoy nature. Bob
Great video. I want to add one to a property on Black Lake near Perth. It's nice to see local content.
@@fisherman_of_navarone thank you, we have owl boxes for sale on our website. Customer made by us. gilligalloubird.com ,, Bob
Great owl content, Bob! Really enjoy your design! Gonna have to make one or two just like it for some barred buddies down here in these Texas woods ;) happy holidays & birding sir!
Sam Butler thank you, much appreciated. Happy holidays to you also, enjoy. Bob
Awesome video! I am around perth at opinicon rd and i heard a barred owl the other night! Could have been your barred owl friend... I have a perfect location for a cool box and ill get it done this summer for this fall! Take care of the mice for us around here. Thanks take care
Great video. Thanks for telling about the wrens! I wondered why they all had a few twigs in my birdhouses! Little shit😁
Lol they’re little devils, glad you enjoyed the vid, thank you , Bob
Bob great video. Would you be able to tell us how you fastened the box to the tree?
As much as possible I use wire with tightners , putting small boards at the pressure points . This allows for tree growth, as you can loosen as the tree grows. Sometimes deck screws with washers from the mounting plate and inside the box. Don’t like doing that though?? Bob
How high off the ground?
Which fasteners do you recommend for securing the box to a tree? Is a softwood tree like pine a bad idea?
@@BrandonVincent1 a pine can work for sure, I often use a French cleat, one piece on the tree and one piece on the box. Our boxes have mounting plates the also help to secure it. Thanks , Bob 👍😊
I have a pair at my house. Built them a box last week but I put the perches too low. I just posted a video with tons of video of them. Check it out. The owls are the last few minutes. Man I hope they use the box!
Frank DiNardi awesome, enjoy ! 👌
Would you be willing to post some rough dimensions you use?
Wouldn't you say the box is somewhat small in case the female lays and hatches like 5 eggs? As they grow bigger there's nowhere to move and flap wings.
Will the local areas' squirrels take the box before the owls ? No. California
Lol well? 😊I always say that they likely will but they will scatter when the owls show up??? 😎😊😆
I’m in Florida and I have a fledgling in a tree he was at my front door peeking in lol I did want to help but not disturb but I am concerned momma is up in a large oak watching but I’m not sure she is feeding the beautiful baby what are ya gonna do
He should be fine, mom and or dad should be feeding but by now the youngster will be hunting some on his own, they often sit for hours waiting for a food opportunities. Enjoy the scenery. 😊👌
I wish to purchase an owl box to be placed in a woodland.

@@1202jazzman good morning Nick, thanks for the feed back, it was a game time decision to put this up on U tube, originally shot to be an Instagram vid, hence recorded this way. Hope you were able to get something out of it, let me know if you have questions, happy to help if I can, thanks , Bob
Hard to hear you
Snobbish lady barred owls like crayfish very much. WCFY , WCFY, WCFY! It is very hard to marry a lady barred owl. And they marry for a life. Very demanding wives!
