  • The true all-encompassing space sim was a rare sight for quite a while, but recently more developers have taken a shot at the expansive games in this genre. Some have tried to put a unique spin on the experience, while others have taken it all online, but there were some that didn't seem to know what the hell they were doing at all.
    Rockfish Games figured it out though. They took the bones of a weird roguelike, put six years of development into it, and made something that just about every space sim fan can enjoy. It's the American dream... manifested by this German developer.

    Space Diablo is here and every inch of this seven layer dip we call a universe is ready for you to scoop up mouthfuls of content for many dozens of hours.
    Get in on Space Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/1128920/EVERSPACE_2/ or Game Pass to save money and support mega corporations.

    I'd say its a hybrid between space diablo and space Zelda botw. I was consistently impressed by how well the location "puzzles" are designed. While there are indeed a few locations where you can get lost, in most cases you have a lot of guidance in form of lights, mine fields, unrelated loot markers that just happen to be near the thing you need. I routinely 100% complex locations with half a dozen secrets without even trying much, by just flying around and poking my nose into whatever looked interesting. And even when it wasn't clear usually it was enough to just stop and look around considering that almost always the puzzles are pretty localized.
    The combat is fun (explosions!), but for me it feels secondary to the exploration (which is why its similar to botw - also in the guidance design). After a while you can just settle on a build that works and blast through pretty much anything without much effort. Like in have a build that allows me to go from nearly dead to fully repaired on everything in a few seconds - and I don't even use nanobots
    I actually like the story being more grounded. And while the execution (fetch quests) might not be the best, I quite enjoy the set of characters and overall believability of the world. I feel like the story is mostly to provide you some direction to drag you around the world and show it from different sides and perspectives - the ME1 approach - which it IMO does quite successfully. So maybe its lacking spectacle of bombastic cutscenes, but it does the job well - much better than most of the game stories these days

      Yes I suppose Diablo has never really featured puzzles. In fact, the only one I can think of was in Diablo Immortal of all places...
      I agree about the positive aspects of a grounded story. Not everything needs to be the end of the universe from day one. It's just a bit slow starting and the motion comic style doesn't do much to prop up the experience. Given the setpieces that they used them for - all pretty low action walking/talking moments - I think it would have been been a lot more engrossing to have those in 3D environments, even if it didn't look AAA tier. But I suppose at the end of the day this is an indie game with a small dev studio that was working off of a kickstarter budget. I'm sure building something like that is expensive and tertiary to all of the conten they did achieve.

    • @NightNord
      @NightNord Рік тому +1

      @@AbbreviatedReviews Yeah. I believe that Everspace 1 wasn't very financially successful and the second Kickstarter almost failed (and they asked for just 500k euro - obviously that's not the game budget, more like a self-funding marketing campaign) due to general lack of interest. So I am not surprised that they went with the cheaper option - also I believe the cutscenes will be even more slow walking-talking kind of they would try to do that in 3d. No shootouts with androids or spiders for sure.
      Hopefully the second game will be more successful without the whole rouge-like thing and they'll be able to afford more
      For me the most annoying/disappointing part were the loading screens when jumping/arriving - short, but still annoying and it made me not want to go to the random encounters after a while.

    Back in the day, one of the aspects that made Freelancer really mesmerising for me was the music. It is still to this day one of my favorite game soundtracks. I found Everspace 2 OST to be really generic sci-fi videogame OST in comparison, in the end i just turned it off since it was actually annoying. The game itself is good though, and i can accept a good game with generic music.

    • @AbbreviatedReviews
      @AbbreviatedReviews  11 місяців тому +1

      The soundtrack is definitely not a strong point for Everspace 2. I noticed that more when using it to make this video. I think even the first game had a better lineup of tracks.

    How do you think it holds up vs Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen?

    • @AbbreviatedReviews
      @AbbreviatedReviews  Рік тому +3

      I've barely played any Elite Dangerous, but it's a much different beast than Star Citizen. It's much more of a simplistic control scheme and obviously there's no simulated damage models or anything, but it has mountains more content than SC's current state... even beyond the numerous puzzles in every area. Though even when they eventrually focus on fleshing out SC's content, I imagine they'll still be really distinct experiences given the RPG-like structure of Everspace 2 with levels, gear rarities, and scaled challenges.

    Level scaling in Everspace 2 ruins the game.

    • @AbbreviatedReviews
      @AbbreviatedReviews  7 місяців тому

      I know level scaling is a contentious thing, but I've never had a problem with it. I think it's applicable to maintaining the flow of an open-world game without coercing people to follow a specific path of progression.
