Tropical Gardens UK: Exotic Garden June Tour

June is finally here, the first month in which you can expect to see some flower colour in your exotic garden. Unfortunately cold nights and weeks of rain has held back many plants, and provided poor displays from others! Be that as it may, English horticulturist Simon is going to walk around his garden to see what is happening. Hopefully something inspiring can be found?

Maybe I’m cheating, although behind this year I have plenty of colour from April through to Oct in my tropical garden. In between the Palms I grow flowering ground cover like Pulmonaria, not exactly tropical but they flower early and their spotty leaves show off the palm fronds. Also, the Geums don’t look out of place, they dance around my Princeps Palm. Just started flowering are the Alstroemeria Indian Summer and they’ll continue to flower until November.
Well done with your Gloriosa, I’ve never managed to get the tuber to sprout. They either rot or don’t do anything. Looking forward to seeing yours!

Hi Maxime, and thanks for getting in touch. To be honest I too have my eye on Geum Mrs Bradshaw, but I haven't found one yet.I'm sorry to hear about your glory lilies. I do have a video on how we planted these up this year. I will publish that tomorrow morning for you. Simon

We “up North” Wigan area are the same; 2 to 3 weeks behind last year (apart from my Bamboos and Gunnera who have loved the rain) and I’ve never known May to be so windy before. Your Tree Fern looks spectacular!

Hi Terry, and thanks for getting in touch. To be fair, our black bamboo has come on well this year. I do like the Gunnera, but our garden isn't big enough to accommodate one at it full size, so Lorna said,'No!' I probably would have bought one, though, but that opportunity has now passed with the recent legislation. Simon
