Great project. I have a number of old radios and just the cabinets. As an engineer I am well acquainted with the electronics. But, I don't like to mess with the high voltages in the old tube sets. So, I usually re-purpose the cabinets. I have a 1933 Philco Model 60 (the cathedral style). I put a Raspberry PI in it. I replaced the dial with one that shows the years 1938 to 1945 (the war years). I added a bunch of .mp3 files of old radio shows (from the Internet Archive). Now, when you “tune” to a year, it plays a radio show from that year.
A long way to get to my point. I have the tuning knob and an on/off volume control. And two extra holes. I love seeing your ideas for dealing with extraneous holes and fittings. I also like your UA-cam style.

Perhaps my favorite video you've done! The opening re-enactment, closing and wit were highly entertaining. The guitar playing (who knew?) took me back to college days in the early 70s at the UofM, as well as time in Berkeley, just hanging out with friends playing (or trying to play) guitar. Very trippy, time travel sound. Oh, and the refurbished piece turned out remarkably nice with your modifications. Was a time when you only did VO. You've become very comfortable on camera. Thanks for sharing your many talents! 😊

That thing's beautiful! I have a early '60s Magnavox Micromatic that I got for free. It was gutted and beat up and not worth much of anything even in good shape, so I decided to not bother trying to restore it and just have some fun with it. I used strips of maple to build a rear panel (it was just a crudely cut piece of luan) to match the style of the front with stainless steel louvered vents from an inboard boat to mirror the speaker sections on the front. Put taller legs on it (originals were variously cracked), repaired and reinforced the damaged bottom where the legs mounted, new white speaker cloth to contrast the new cabinet color, new speakers, new bluetooth receiver, hidden RF receiver for a remote, and painted the cabinet in a light blue to match the decor. It was fun to make and everyone notices it and seems to love it.

I did a 1939 Philco found in a flea market. A filthy disgusting floor model with the guts, knobs and speaker intact. I stripped out the radio chassis completely and hand built a Fender Princeton Clone amp into it. This is a 15 watt output design. The cabinet was stripped and refinished. The original combo on-off tone pot and the original volume pot are used. The speaker is a custom Weber 12 inch, 30 watt, 8 ohm that rattles the windows when cranked. I have a Sony stereo AM FM with CD player plugged into one of the 2 input jacks and I refer to this Frankenstein creation as my magic Jukebox.

I inherited a 1937 Philco shortwave radio that belonged to my Grandpa. He originally purchased it to listen to the BBC news broadcasts of the Spanish Civil war. All of the electronics and tuning still work and it receives local and international broadcasts. But....the cabinet is showing its age. You have inspired me to make an effort to restore its cosmetics and appearance. Appreciated your video.

I have an old radio similar to yours. It was my grandfather's and I know it did work. As a small child I remember it being in his bedroom and it worked. This would have been in the late 1950's.. Now, it does not work although all the workings are in it. It is pretty scratched up and a little dinged up, but could be restored. I doubt I ever do that. It will remain in my home until...
Forgot to say the brand name is "Truetone".

Awesome job. Back in the 90's I used to find old cabinets like this, I would either turn them into open cabinets with leather tops or a few times I inserted some modern digital radios and tuners. I did make one in 2012 where I transformed the radio part into an ipod dock complete with a CD player.

The darkening of the trim was a really good move. It makes it look more aged and closer to what you normally think of as walnut. Im not sure how much space you still have in that box, or how the electronics for guitar things work, but maybe you could add an effect board or two and have them controlled by dials for those two spare holes instead of a pedal.
