LOL! Oh my word! Someone's truly coming out of his shell. 🤣 On another note... when I inherited a table-top radio of my dad and mom's made in 1963, I was thrilled. It is a Zenith K731 AM/FM radio that works perfectly and is in excellent condition. Your nicely restored radio reminded me of my Zenith. Nice job Dashnurd Dude!

Here's a tip on fixing that knob! It's on borrowed time as is and you could end up right back in the same place you started. A better fix (short of a new potentiometer) is to snap that piece back off. Drill a couple of small holes in the stub, and corresponding holes in the nubbin that goes into the shaft of the knob. Use bits of paperclip wire in those holes, and glue it all back. It'll be a lot stronger.

You can often fuse plastic together with acetone and the repair is way stronger than with any glue. Also drilling a cavity and inserting a drywall screw in it to pull out a dowel would have been a good method to use on your broken pot shaft stuck in the knob. Congrats for the repair it looks great!

11:43 you should get a spray tent... I think they make them specifically for woodworking in mind, but I think any old tent where the front opens up would work. Throw some sawhorses in there and a sheet of ply for a little working table. My friend has one... he does a lot of finishing work inside a warehouse. (also good to prevent dust particles floating around the room.)

FM in cars wasn't until 1963. 1965 for some. Even by 1965 it was a rarely ordered option because few FM stations existed in most markets. For home use, it might be common earlier, but my hunch is that most people didn't opt for FM for the same reason til mid to late 60s.

Excellent work as always and I think that dent is probably your best example for your steam trick yet! For the knob though, it looks like the hole in the knob covers a slightly wider shape than the potentiometer shaft in some areas. I would try using a paperclip and either bend a tiny bit at the end at 90 or 180° to make a barb, or if you can't manage to bend a section that's short enough you could just snip it with wire cutters that shear rather than cut. You can stick that into the little hole and try to hook the back or side of the broken plastic shaft and drag it out without breaking the knob. I would just replace the potentiometer though. I know some people would probably argue otherwise because it's an original part, but if it's made of plastic it was going to break anyway and probably will again later, plus you never actually see that part since it's covered by the knob. A bit more work soldering on a new one, but if it were my piece, I'd probably prefer it with a stronger metal shaft. But I'm just the peanut gallery and 10 years rusty at electronics so take what I say with a salt lick sized for moose.

The knob could have been drilled out with a small drill and the same with the shaft in the radio. Then tap a thread in both and get a screw wich you cut off the head. Now you can screw the knob on. The advantage is tat it would be much stronger.
But it all ended well as I could see. Nice radio.
