One of the greatest and a real out of this world person but humble and down to earth at the same time. Getcha pull. That's the fun he had. You know it's true...
Yeah and he had only been playing properly for like 3 years at this point if you take into what he said in a 1993 clinic when asked how long he’d been playing into account. He said ‘About 13 years’ but back then it was the thing to do before the internet and video games took over. From what I’ve heard the 80s were filled with people that could shred, famous or not.
I have my cassette where darrell taught me songs etc, also have Pantera's ,cassette they gave out to get shows. Starts off with flying high again. Darrell does a solo in the middle ,only play half of each song.
I never lived through the late 70s and early 80s but man that time period seemed like heaven. All of the songs I hear throughout the video give me passion to live and play guitar
Listening to this has made me smile a few times, because of some goofy things mentioned in these comments and just funny moments. I went to school with Darrell and became friends, and even though I played, my level of sucktitude at guitar was pretty unmatched. Honestly, I was all show...lol...I looked cool playing, but the guitar talent was severely lacking. Still, he always encouraged me to keep working at it, and even lied to me to keep my hopes alive. He is missed as a badass, but more as a friend. Regarding Tabs: I NEEDED tabs to learn songs, so I had some harder to find/f'ing expensive tab books. When I heard him playing 'Let It Go' on here it made me smile. I had the tab book from Def Leppard itself, so he'd give me shit about how I'd play parts of it. I told him that I was playing the parts right. Anyway, one day we were playing and drinking, and he mentioned it again. I busted out my tab book and threw it to him. He started digging through it and when he got to 'Let It Go', he just said "Well shit, I've been playing it wrong this entire time. Fuck it, I like my way better." We laughed and I said, "I do too." Dean Guitars: I saw where someone listed stores Darrell worked at, and there was also a shop on S. Cooper in a strip mall where Bigfoot Subs was located. I remember he told me to come in so he could hook me up with a cooler guitar. He was pushing me hard to buy a Dean and I was like "No way man! Nobody plays Dean except Sammy Hagar. I'd rather spend my money on a cool looking B.C. Rich." He said, "You're crazy, but go ahead and be Captain B.C. Bitch!" It was always cool to me that Dean became his signature look. Solos: Yes, he would learn every album 'guitar solos' back when bands would include those on albums. Everyone knew how well he played 'Eruption' and he would show it off when just f'ing around at someone's keg party. One night, we're on the way and he says that he was going to blow everybody's mind and play it backwards that night if he ended up playing. He ends up playing in the garage of someone's parents house and played it backwards, and wondering why nobody's minds were being blown. Truth is, only a few people recognized parts of it. Then he says to everybody that he's going to play 'Eruption' and then he'd play it backwards when he finished. Everyone was into it after that, but I think he realized that people didn't appreciate music at the level he did. I think he did the same with Quiet Riot's 'Battle Axe' also. He was just such a fun, nice, and friendly person, with just a wicked sense of humor. And some of those photos in his show gear at the beginning is EXACTLY how he'd dress in high school.
Yo, Glenn. This is Matt Penny. I found this and shit my pants. You had Darrell playing and singing Aint Talking About Love by VH on one of your tapes. I miss the good old days. I would go into lessons ripped and ask Darrell "play over the mountain lead, eruption, etc." What a privilege we had. Hearing Darrell play? Many, tears. You have him in your soul, as I do Peace and love my old friend. RIP Darrell.
He was brilliant from the get to there’s no doubt but back then it wasn’t really uncommon for people to be decent at guitar because this was before distractions like the internet, smartphones, really good video games etc so people had endless free time to just play guitar all day. And Dime was no exception and he ran with it and gave us the great music we still listen to everyday
@@trendkill3333 I partly agree and partly disagree. There were still distractions, just different ones. Dime put in work combined with a natural aptitude and the result is greatness. He could have chosen not to work as hard but he had the passion and discipline to go above and beyond. There's plenty of modern players who are crazy good, and would also cite Dimebag, RR, EVH, as influences. For some the modern resources we have are a distraction to spend all day on the internet, others use them as tools to get even better.... it's all about how you apply yourself. Spoken as a self-admitted lazy player working on getting better! RIP Dime and all other legends that paved the way 🤘
Yeah he had been playing for 5 years! Just raw talent my hero for guitar players when I was 12 I discovered him and ran with it this is gold to me i love it!
If that is correct, I'm glad that I quit playing when I did. I was a lead vocalist in a Rock n' Metal band and I would pick up either of the rhythm or the lead guitar player's guitars and fiddle around trying to emulate what I saw them doing. It's funny looking back at it now. When someone who you respect as a good (or Really good, maybe even great) guitarist watches you and then tells the next person who sees you playing that "He's terrible, he couldn't play his way out of a wet paper bag", it DESTROYED my confidence. I never wanted anyone else to ever hear how horrible I was. Words have consequences and in my case, my "friend" laying waste to my confidence kept me from spending a lot of time and money on something that I was never going to be any good at doing. Trying to decide if I should thank him or just let him know that he alone had that much of an impact on my psyche. And I know that I could have practiced 15 hours a day and would have maybe improved, but I know this much: I would never, not EVER, EVER, NEVER would have played in front of THAT GUY again! And here's the real irony in the whole thing: that same guy had a really hard time for about 25-30 years of playing before he could play with the confidence that he had when he was playing something that I was encouraging him to do! I would be like, That's amazing, play that and add this or get rid of that. He couldn't play as well in front of a crowd as well as he could play in front of me!! Go figure, huh. Dime fuckin ROCKED HIS ASS OFF!! "1...2...3... VAN HALEN"!!! That's what the four of them would say before they ran out on stage. Look it up.
@@chitownbluesy thanks for sharing. Not everyone is meant to be a virtuoso but anybody can sound great and play in a band if they practice. You most definitely could of did something. I sucked but I sucked so bad I didn't know I sucked lol. I was lucky to play in an era were the popular songs were easy and leads were 'gay' ... Until bands like Shadow fall avenged 7fold and even the Darkness made them cool... Then guitar hero came out. After about several months of playing live we won band competitions. Instead of being flashy I tried to be smart and know my place in the band (best rhythm section in area). I was one of the few that could actually play funk in addition to jazzy stuff, metal, classic rock, hip hop. On thing I regret is not taking lessons... Also ignoring wrist, elbow pain
Dime: heres how it goes *starts to play* Student:???? Dime:finishes song with crazy pick squeal. You got it? Student: well you lost me Dime: which part? Student: right after you turned on the amp lol
I saw this 'kid" play at the Agora in Dallas, TX before Pantera. The Agora changed hands soon after, at the time it had a two-story stage !! -- He was a Hot Shot and really stood out !!!
He had a great feel for leads especially back then. I love hearing his take on all those songs. I was born about a year before him so we came up on all the same stuff & we started playing at the same time & I was playing most of these same songs back then or different ones off the same albums.but I didn't feel confident about leads till 84 my 5th year in serious. If we were in the same area we could definitely jammed of course he would do all the leads.
Thank you for your perspective. I like to have a global vision on time about how music has changed and what ppl were playing at that time where you didnt have all the facilities as my generation 80's had with internet!
I love dimes style of play. So soothing to listen to, every time you hear him play it’s like your soul harmonizes with the sound of every single note. Gone but most importantly never gonna be forgotten. Rip dimebag Darrell ❤ “you get that down, you’re a son of a bitch” lol
Man thank you for sharing.Ive been a fan of the Texas boys for many years. And Dime in concert, which they played here in Tx alot, was amazing on stage. He could deliver every night.I love Pantera. Thanks again. And R.I.P. Dime and Big Vin
Bro, so much for uploading this! This is truly a treat to listen to. I also consider this "holy ground" because it's like hearing the spirit of Dime immortalized on tape.
He's here for music was just f****** phenomenal and not only that man he was a phenomenal guitarist. In my opinion without all the stuff we have today to learn with imagine if he had this stuff tabs and stuff like today in the internet damn I missed dime
I'm 11 months older then Dime and came up on the same shit. I loved all these songs back then. Playing guitar since 79 myself mostly the only way to learn was playing along with our records. Kids got it much easier today. Also some of these songs he's playing didn't come out till 84 & 85. so not all lessons are from 83
I was fortunate enough to see Pantera perform live a couple times, and hands down they were one of the greatest live bands I've ever witnessed! I got to give Dime a hug and shook his hand! One of the greatest feelings ever because of the impact Dime had on my playing style, as well as my life. I spent countless hours all throughout my teenage years trying to learn all his riffs perfectly, and trying to recreate that chunky southern metal tone. He's amazing.
Something magical happened to Dime when he wrote cowboys from hell. He went from being a regular glam rock dude to this infernal heavy metal machine. If you listen Dime´s guitar work before cowboys is like if there was another guy playing the guitar.
Power Metal was the transnational period imo. They may have still looked hair metal, but Dime's guitar work on that album is pretty damn heavy, "over and out" and "death trap" specifically. I agree though, there was a big change in tone and style, pretty much an entire re-brand of the band with CFH
They never were Glam rock . Its a bullshit retro active label by people will not have 70s /80s metal culture and because they had tight pants and big hair ( like even some heavy bands didnt then ). I'll be allright , metal magic , Out for flood , Project in the jungle , Killers , I am the night , Right on the edge , Vallalah , Onward we rock, Down bellow , Power metal , Over and out , Death trap and so on.. Glam rock ? You never listened Judas Priest or what before saying this is glam rock ?
I was there. And if i remember correctly it wasnt a cassette recorder. Matt Riley turned Dime onto a portable 4 track that recorded onto cassettes. Like the 1st little tascam ever available. We thought that was the coolest thing ever, having means to send lessons and backing tracks home with students and to create on the fly. I probably have more of those tapes somewhere, if they havent turned to dust! That was along time ago!

Dennis Dorsey you missed "Owner of a lonley heart"by YES at 12:30 and a snippet of "Heart and Soul" by Huey lewis and the News at 13:39,"Spirit of the Radio" by RUSH at 15:45," Life in the fast lane" by Eagles at 16:33, "Spanish Fly" by Van Halen at 22:52. One of the great things about Darrell was that he recognized a great riff no matter the genre or style and its evident in the songs i described above. He wasnt all about the Metal all the time he had a good ear for picking up good riffs.
Dennis Dorsey Yeah you did really good actually. And yeah pull up the song "Owner of a lonely heart" by YES and then go to that riff Darrell playes at 12:30 and its definitely YES
lol, in certain parts his Texas accent is really thick. Makes me wish I kept my old cassette tapes of my uncle and I jamming when we were kids, it's surprising how much you still sound like your older, more advanced self even when your first starting out. There's nobody that can sound like you except you.
My Guitar teacher in 1984 said to me 50% was the look. I had it. Metal hair, Ear Rings. the clothes and the "Look" he called it. Our first lesson was Van Halen doing the solo for Beat It. This is after 5 years of listening to Van Halen since the first album. He was all about the look. It did do me well for a short time.

@@shanericketts5799 I did basically the same thing. Lessons where the teacher didn’t even really teach just talked about all the drugs he did in the past so I quit. I got decent but nowhere near sick level. I have barely touched my guitar in 5 years so I suck now lol.
@@kevinkeith3530 yeah, he was mostly self tight, I think a lot of us had lessons here and there, but I think he did most of it himself. He didn’t have a professional teacher. Great stuff! I wonder if this is all from 1983 like it says in the description? I guess no way to really tell. Sounds really good, I can hear his style already. Sounds older, I was thinking maybe when he was closer to 1985, like it says at the beginning. When he would have been around 19. Either way, really great at a young age! 🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
Someone should list all the songs and timestamp them in the comments, because it's frustrating because I know that I know almost every song he's playing, but just can't quite name them off the tip of my head. I recognized a few of them, including Stayed Awake All Night by Krokus @ 17:20.

Fuck it, I like my way better." We laughed and I said, "I do too."
Dean Guitars: I saw where someone listed stores Darrell worked at, and there was also a shop on S. Bitch!"
It was always cool to me that Dean became his signature look.
Thank you for awesome Dime story he is truly missed everywhere by most of the world
Hearing Dime play Over the Mountain made me smile.
Pretty insane. He's only been playing like maybe 4 years here.
Dime: heres how it goes *starts to play*
Student:????
Dime:finishes song with crazy pick squeal. You got it?
Student: well you lost me
Dime: which part?
Student: right after you turned on the amp lol
Hahaha nice one!
The video intro says he taught how to play it in the lesson first and then played it all the way through after the lesson was finished finished
I saw this 'kid" play at the Agora in Dallas, TX before Pantera. The Agora changed hands soon after, at the time it had a two-story stage !! -- He was a Hot Shot and really stood out !!!
Randy Would Be Proud.
Diss is a gem , I love hearing at the start of a great RIP badass brother DIME !
Your an old fuck like me born in 1967same as Zakk Wylde , Rick Rozz and Chuck Schuldiener Dime was I believe 6 most older than me.
I love dimes style of play. So soothing to listen to, every time you hear him play it’s like your soul harmonizes with the sound of every single note. Gone but most importantly never gonna be forgotten. Rip dimebag Darrell ❤ “you get that down, you’re a son of a bitch” lol
1983, he was DIAMOND Darrell... call him anything you want, he was a fucking beast!!
Man I miss Dime and now Vinnie, It's not fair I would give anything to have them back.
You and me both, but sadly life doesn't work that way
You'd kill yourself to being them back?
Man thank you for sharing.Ive been a fan of the Texas boys for many years. And Dime in concert, which they played here in Tx alot, was amazing on stage. He could deliver every night.I love Pantera. Thanks again. And R.I.P. Dime and Big Vin
Dude thanks for posting, this is vintage Dime.......love it man!
Thank you Dime Thank you so very much beyond the walls of two worlds and time what you was doing meant so much to me I miss you so much
He had the guitar skills and hair of a demi god! My inspiration for even picking up a guitar. Rip brother. Ima get me a pull for you.
Also some of these songs he's playing didn't come out till 84 & 85. so not all lessons are from 83
This is a BadAss video Sir!!! DIMEBAG BABY!!!!
Dude - best ever - he sounds amazing through a $20 amp!
I love you Dime...
Man he could play, just awsome to hear, thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
wow. Dime playing Matias , so frikkin awesome
Dime was a fucking prodigy !
Ok so that song at around I think 6:38 is Fast Times at Ridgemomt High by Smamy Hagar. You're welcome everyone.
@@ThatguyFalcone big change my ass , listen all the albums in the order , there s no big change .
A quick yet complete natural progression .
Sometimes I wonder if Ol’ Dime sold his soul😂
first song he plays is called 'no one like you' by the scorpions incase anyone wondered!!
The guy was incredible
bad ass, plays all songs with ease
First song Scorps no one like you. second song Ozzy over the mountain. Third song fastway, say what you will, then into Def leopard ? fourth song Dio rainbow in the dark. fifth Sammy three lock box. sixth song I don't know then he does photograph by Def Leopard. 7th song Hendrix purple haze 8th ozzy rock and roll rebel . 9th Ozzy Bark at the moon. 10. Krokus. midnight maniac 11. Van Halen unchained. 12. Zep whole lot a love 13. Van Halen eruption 14, ? 15. Dio holy diver 16. Scorpos, big city nights 17. The mighty Priest the hellion / electric eye This was Dimebag at 17 years old, what a horrific loss. RIP Dime!
7th song is Foxy Lady (8.30), not Purple Haze (unless he plays that later). Thanks for the list!
You could be right on that no doubt. It's not easy when you hear a few seconds and no vocals.
Ok, I don't know all of them but I did pretty good. I didn't hear Yess.
I just got my pull!
May be stupid question but what does that mean? Dime said that all the time
@@mikeharryhunt1709 It’s not a stupid question brother. He used to say it instead of check it out basically
@@jblay420 just thought maybe it was slang other people actually used and had a meaning that I just never heard before . Seemed to me he would use it when referring to getting some drink in you.
@@mikeharryhunt1709 it’s his made up slang Dimebonics. It has various meanings and applications
@@mikeharryhunt1709 It means "enjoy yourself",in whatever it is that you're doing at that given moment when "Get'cha Pull" is spoken!!!!
Dimebag Darrell was only 17 at the time of this recording yet sounds like a seasons guitar veteran R.I.P Legend
If this is pre-Metal Magic then this is the oldest known recording of Dime if I'm correct.
there's a video of him playing live and is very young ...
+Facundo Jofre that's from 1984 this is 83
There is some 1984 songs in here so this may be wrong date
This is definitely 1984 no later than 85
I'm sure him and his brother taped themselves when they first started playing together.
Guy was a guitar hero!
This is great! Thanks so much for sharing! :)
It’s incredibly hard to do but very rewarding if you’re able to do it.
OK - I've had a go at it. I know it's woefully incomplete so hold back the hate! :-)

Can we please have Dime and Vinnie back? 🙏
It’s still mind blowing to me that there are musicians out there who think this man is overrated. Get a clue, grow a brain cell and respect this man.
13:38 - 13:48 Huey Lewis & The News - Heart And Soul
Chris Russell, The person Dime is teaching is Shane Uys. His brother is lead singer of Generator in Arlington,Tx
Damn I never knew this shit existed
Dang in 1983 I was only 4. Wtf. He was what 17? Him being self taught makes him one of the most impressive of all time. You can imagine classically trained guitar players destroying, this dude just made it happen. I think he had perfect pitch. That’s like .01% of the population.
Most good musicians are self taught.I took lessons for a week then quit. learned most of my stuff by ear and what I wanted to learn.
@@shanericketts5799 I did basically the same thing. Lessons where the teacher didn’t even really teach just talked about all the drugs he did in the past so I quit. I got decent but nowhere near sick level. I have barely touched my guitar in 5 years so I suck now lol.
he most likely had really good relative pitch, not perfect pitch
His dad played and had a studio, so I think the whole 'self taught' thing doesn't apply, but regardless , Dime was so awesome
@@kevinkeith3530 yeah, he was mostly self tight, I think a lot of us had lessons here and there, but I think he did most of it himself. He didn’t have a professional teacher. He was just naturally talented. I cannot understand it dude holy I’ve known people like that, I was kind of not like this level that’s crazy. But I’ve known people they were mostly self-taught, and they got sick as heck, too, of course, not his level.
THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE. SOMEONE, PLEASE!
