Did the milwaukee cordless ratchet kick the bucket?
@@hemichump send it to ave if so
@@hemichump Seems to have gone toolpro everything
Kinda hard when you're not on Twitter though.
12 inches sounds better too me than 300mm ! What do you think ? Lol
The rim wreckers phone call was so on point it hurts. Also the sneaky white hair joke, hahaha
why are they all like that
That phonecall: 🤣🤣🤣👍
sounds like crazy steve from big les show!
I think this is phone call was actually Moog. That's who it sounds like...
@@stinky817 agreed
Huge props to woody he is really doing well at UA-cam filming editing etc and you can tell he is loving it.
Video made with true passion from both of you.
Different Diff's differ in different ways, definitely a definitive differential diff display.
I c clip you know about alliteration lol
Absolutely alliterative announcement.
We need more doggo shots as well. Doggos... the greatest gift for humans.
Totally legit, no cash here said no wrecking yard ever 😂
I just want to take the time to point out to you how big of a deal it is to see videos like this on YT. As an engineering student, it's my ultimate dream to come up with the "next Torsen" idea as I truly believe it is the epitome of street diffs.
Understanding how important these intricate components are to the performance of a car is key to starting the thought process of coming up with a new development that improves life for performance car owners.
Thank you.
"Just don't show up with cash!"
LOL... I remember when that happened at a few of the junkyards are here too... Same time they got an actual cash register and not just the owner pulling out enormous wads of cash and rolling yours up in it. I can't even tell you how many small trinkets I bought over the years that I know damn well were never reported to the tax man... haha...
Junkyard guys are definitely a strange breed...
Damn. Al you are just a wealth of knowledge. A veritable Wikipedia of Automotive History. I always thought Torsen was some guy, but now you tell me it's an acronym for Torque Sensing. That's what I really like about the Skid Factory. A great balance of useful educational content and entertainment. And Gary. Gary's a hoot. Cheers!
Legit, I don't even think the Rim Wreckers phone call at the end was a skit. The tone of voice, everything. Perfect. It triggered PTSD flashbacks.
It only missed the usual bit where they put the phone down and forget you're there for 10 minutes while they find someone to run out back for them. And then they come back, and the conversation has to start from square one again because they've forgotten who you are and what you want...
Cracking up at rim wreckers well done lads, oh and Al keep ya hat on you over exposed the shot at the start 😂😂😂
Blame Woody's camera skills not my head.
@@theskidfactory 🤣🤣🤣 needs a special nd filter to combat that shine
Hey don't pick oh Al if you had to work with Rim Wreckers you would pull all of your bloody hair out to...
@@someyoungguy6990 bahahahaha yes that's very true🤣🤣
@@OvertakingLane polarizing filter, to cut that glare :-D
Props to Al for admitting the foul up was his, and relaying the necessity for reading all the enclosed documentation.
Love the video boys. Good on ya'.
As a Canadian who drives a Subaru STi (as well as a bunch of other stuff), I can add +1 to the "Torsen diffs are the real deal" crowd. Limited-slip is the way to go for street and winter, you just drive away like "why is everyone so slow?" then you remember "oh right they have no traction".
I had a Pozitrac-like system in an old Volvo 940, it was basically for getting you out of snowbanks. Open all the time until there's too much slip then CLUNK SOLID AXLE! Worked pretty well but occasionally it'd scare the hell out of you by locking halfway through a slide and making the car go in a new, random direction.
A Torsen diff allows the wheels to move at different speeds, but under load will attempt to make both wheels move at the same speed by feeding torque away from the faster moving axle to the slower moving axle.
Truly excellent piece of engineering.
Ol mate Gary sounds like he's wrecked a few rims in his day
Or rimmed a few wrecks.
Yeah and he has been doing it longer than you have been alive...!!
Entertaining vid as usual. Woody's voice over explaining what's going on works well. Well done all inolved.
I had no idea a rear end had to be set up. This is a great episode.
"Electric Bike Enthusiast, Not a Relationship Therapist " & " Owner of Noosa Radiators, Not a Hardware Store "
Thanks for the good diff explanation. That is a nice rear axle unit!
Those calls to the wreckers are gold.
Loving the little extra bits at the end of the videos.
Lots of great info in this, cheers guys. Top work by Marty on the phone call, bloody hilarious.
That phone conversation at the end was pure class. Thanks for another great episode guys.
The wrecker is a classic. A perfect parody of the real wreckers I've dealt with.
I put a Eaton Trutrac in my XR6T. Really good feel compared to the stock centre. Reused the ring and pinion. I gotta say, I am so glad it had the adjuster caps for the backlash instead of those shims. Made it so easy I actually went back and reset it 3 times to make sure I wasn't missing something. Been flogging it for 18 months now and it's been awesome. That stubby method is something I wish I heard before now, but I think it's was fairly close.
"Never assume - always measure" - next t-shirt with Al's face in the "use ya brain" series?
there is an old saying that goes something like To assume makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me"
@@bringingtherukas7473 Or the Samuel L Jackson "mess it up & recover on the fly" version in Long Kiss Goodnight
Or even RTFM
big shoutout and respect to the dudes who build diffs - not a small piece of work. thats for the edumacational content boys.
That phone call at the end was epic! hahahaha but we all know that was Marty but that was on point! 😂😂😂
Joe Alex I reckon it was too
yeah, it’s his old man voice from the Gramps build series
There was a moment in America, when you couldn't build a car using a credit card as your primary tool- I got my first driver's license back then and the gasoline fever I'd had since about age 7-8 did the rest- little money, so improvisation was the game; at 24, I won best semi custom truck in a local show- and it was all "stuff that fit" or I made to fit- the paint was done by a friend, even the silver pin stripe. It would be another decade and a half before I even had a credit card. Al, you and Woody, and Benny too, take me there, even though the cars have "strange names" and come from factories in Japan- you build with what you've got, speed parts are often a tip about some "found" part that will do something awesome, and the engineer is the guy behind the ten fingers doing the work. As you would have it- Good on ya, mate!FR
The torsen differential still relies on friction to limit slip. The worm gears are forced into the housing when torque is applied. It is the friction between the ends of the worm gears and the housing that limits the slip. The torque bias is determined by the friction coefficient and the helix angle on the worm gears. A common misconception that because there isn't clutch plates that it doesn't rely on friction.
I appreciate all the tech explaining. You make it easy to understand Al!
The wrecker phone call gives me traumatic flashbacks to working at Repco, Toyota, and Partsworld!
Those old blokes in the trade that have never worn hearing protection (and maybe breathed too many fumes), so always talk at full volume! Classic.
Best after credits gag yet. Love it 😂👌
How much does Al love this you can see it written all over his face
Memories triggered. Haven’t had to do a diff for 30 years.
Face and flank, move the crank.
Toe and heel, move the wheel.
Love your stuff, don’t watch tv no more.
Loved the Rim Wreckers call! LMAO!
We're gonna need to see more dog!
9 inch also very popular due to its strength, the extra pinion bearing on the end helped that and the vast amount of ratios.
Woody does a fine job with the video editing. You guys are a good team.
We call it a ring where you call it a crown wheel . Thus called a ring and pinon set . Great video.
Diff explaination was awesome. I never knew what went into building them, no wonder it takes all day. The wrecker sounds like a top bloke to have some squashes with 🤣
No red paint on the rear calipers? 25KW left on the table!!!
Bloody confident in front of the camera these days Alan.. Seen the cheeky ls highrise. Keep up the hard work boys love it!
I gave the rim wreckers call a good clap when it was done holy shit that was good.
Hands up who tried to call the number for Rim Wreckers?
Wooo looks like I was bang on the money with my guess about what's going into that VK. LS based with a Hi-Ram style intake (looks like a Edelbrock Pro Flo) and a pair of snails on the side. Also I love the piping design on the intercooler. Always wonder why people doing twin turbo V8 stuff (especially on the LS) don't use similar pipe design and layout Makes the intake path so much shorter if the outlet is straight up and into the Throttle body.
That VK is going to be a freaking animal!
I hope they do the build series on it
I reckon Nissan V8
That wreckers phone call tho 👌😂
Loved the Rim Wreckers call.
Woody, we definitely need to see more shots of that good boi who potters around the shed from time to time! 🐶
You can tell Al is keen on the new parts.
Woodies Phone call to Gazza... Hahahaha... Legend.
Love to see a visit to rim wreckers ;D
every call to the wreckers not matter what ends with "yeah just come down have a look" haha quality and on point as always
Torsen differentials do use friction and thrust to transfer power. Those helical gears produce a side thrust against preload washers. When the friction against the washer is overcome, they act like an open differential. The washers can be varied to increase the torque bias from around 2 up to 8:1. A 2:1 torque bias means that if you send 300 ft/lbs to the axle, 200 lbs will go to one wheel and 100 lbs will go to the other wheel, with the wheel that has more grip receiving more torque. If the torque to the low grip wheel exceeds the bias ratio, it spins. One of the neat tricks with a Torsen differential is that you can use brake torque to modify the bias. Let's say you have 1 wheel on loose dirt and the other wheel on asphalt, and you're trying to get out of a steep driveway. You can apply the parking brake to the wheels and overcome the parking brake with the engine torque, the parking brake adds more effective torque bias to the differential by reducing slippage on the low traction wheel, this is how the traction control system on a Hummer H1 works, they use the ABS system to pulse the brakes and apply bias to the differentials and keep them from spinning.
Greg and the guys are the best I use them all the time.
that phone call at the end was that scripted that was awesome!!! love Australia
Good work Kids, Love the wrecker call 🤣🤣🤣
9" also doesn't have c clip axles, so you dont have to worry about them popping out and crashing your car.
That skit at the end is legendary. @Woody you should buy gloves a size smaller that are at least 4 mil and it will change your life. As long as they are nice and tight fitting it can save so much hassle washing up later.
I had an '00 Jeep XJ w/ a Dana 44 from an '87. It had an Auburn ECTED that was a clutchpack LSD w/ a servo to turn it into a locker. Loved it
Silicone grease is much better in caliper slides then anti-sieze IMO
only if you want them to last, and not seize.. copper antisieze about the worst product you can put in there...
Marty always does a good job at being the phone talent!
I was wondering if it was him or moog
Pretty sure that was Marty. Moog was the old Bedford parts guy.👍
I think a part of why I like this show so much is just hearing some of the Auzzie terms for auto parts!! How many Auzzies wore Ring Gears on their head before they decided to call them Crown Wheels haha
That phone call was gold. I'm assuming it's a setup. Haha.
Holly Shit Gary .. that's the most Aussie thing I've ever heard on this show !! ... wow !!
Awesome work Al and Woody, great looking Rhodesian Ridgeback, loving this series guys 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🦘
Torsen diff, started out as a high end sports car diff... That almost no one used due to cost... Picked up for the Hmmwv(Hummer)
Thanks for the insight into diffs. Torsens are cool. The fact that I know this is one reason my wife won’t let me drive her 86.
Honistly im enjoying these videos so much! Everything explained so well :)
no one:
Johnny: Im on smoko! so leave me alone!
Love the video guys, very informative on the diffs and the editing is on point, look forward to more iron lion action
RIM Wreckers is well named. That a character!
Great video again! I'd have used the red rubber grease on the sliders as anti seize/copper grease can cause the rubber to expand and ultimately cause the sliders to seize. 👍
Love the new music. Fits so well
Great vid and a beautiful Ridgeback!
The Torsen Gen 2 does have a clutch to add preload for wheel lift situations. So I guess you gotta stick with something like the Detroit TrueTrac for old school Torsen.
Cheers from the States, where I watch from the back side of my laptop so it all looks right lol. Great Video Gents! Zip~
Gary sounds exactly the same as "Turbo" from outback truckers! Must be brothers..
I’ve setup gears a few times. All it takes is a few specialized tools, a little knowledge, and a LOT of PATIENCE.
The way I looked at it was I could pay someone $500 to swap everything in or I could spend $300, get some new tools to play with, and gain some knowledge along the way.
I put 4.88s, an Eaton E-Locker and a Trutrac in my Jeeps diffs.
Ended up swapping an 8.8 into the rear and added an ARB air locker too.
With 40k miles on it I musta done something right...lol
Another awesome vid guys, they just keep getting better and better!
Who the hell smashed the thumbs down button?... Probably Garry and his mates!

What a great phone call.
I caught on early but I thought just maybe ol' Gary was a throwback to a bygone era but when a wrecker says I don't want cash I burst out laughing at the absurdity.
Wow your wrecker is a character for sure lol🤯🤯🤯😁😁😁😁🤯🤯
Gary needs his own show hes a legend
Rob....."Gary" has a show!!
Lemon squash my arse!! Champions, love your channel and your work 😊
I think the "Lemon Squash" is XXXX Gold. Very popular in Queensland.
That anti seize looked a lot like copper grease. If used only use it very sparsely, just a thin coat. As a excessive amount will harden over time/heat cycles. Making those sliders or nipples seize up pretty good. I've had several sets mounted like that that needed a lot of heat, hammering and swearing to come back apart. As such I'm not a big fan of it. We mostly use a high temperature resistant lithium grease these days. Developed for the brakes specifically and often advised by the manufacturer.
you don't always have to adjust the handbrake stuff most cars you can just push the brake pedal very hard and then apply the handbrake like 10 times hard and it wil self adjust
Torsen is simple . It simply will not let one wheel turn faster than the other , it will however allow one wheel to turn slower than the other .
That doesn't matter much but I just watched that phone call 10 times in a row 23:53
i like doing diff builds. theyre a lot easier than you think once you understand it
I learnt things I did not know nice video :)
Sounds like Gary has found his way into the lemon squash
Marty has been wrecking rim since Cheryl
"Welcome back to the SKEET factory"
I better check the merch shop and see if you have a Rim Wreckers sticker.
I swear rim wreckers have relatives in the business here in Newcastle. Not as many as years past but still around!
It depends on the locker. My GMC's G80 doesn't make any noise, it just goes. I beat the shit out of it each winter and love it more than any other diff for snow/ice. People make the funniest faces when you're drifting a 6000lb+ vehicle...
Really loving this build. Thanks for edjamacating me some more. EDIT: no you bloody haven't! Bad form, bad form.
When Al said "finish the job" I was waiting for "or you don't get pudding, and it's sponge cake with custard"
Great show love your work
