The stock Flamethrower is definitely the Pybro’s common tool. At the end of the day though, Pyro is even more of a heckler than the Scout. Weapon switch speed is just so much more adaptable for a short-range class.

This series is amazing! I subbed right after your first pyro guide and i have to say you can potentially become the best guide maker for pyroes out there.
I have some suggestions for future videos but only if you have time for them:
    - The roles of pyro as well as most efficient play style on each game mode : payload, 5cp, koth etc.
    - Class limits: how many pyroes are overall best for your team to have in a 12v12 scenario and when to stack/not stack them.
    - Other weapon analysis: i've seen backburner as a suggestion but phlog and DF are there too. Also items like the powerjack, backscratcher, third degree, axtinguisher etc.
    - How to fight against other classes: mostly combat classes like soldiers, demos, heavies.

    • @Pirateer5
      @Pirateer5  3 роки тому +4

Cheers for subbing and glad you enjoy!
'Roles of pyro', I might bundle that in with the different Pyro playstyle videos, then maybe make a separate video on that topic as well in more detail
Class limits I'd say like 1-3, might mention it in a guide in the future but not enough for its own video
Definitely planning on doing a 'Flank Pyro' guide in the future (backburner, detonator, etc), and 'Offensive Pyro' (phlog and dragons fury) coming in the near future (couple weeks or so).
How to fight against other classes? You'll really enjoy my sub special then :D (haven't decided what sub count yet though lol)

My personal take on the stock vs degreaser is to ask yourself "do I need the switch speed"
If the answer is no, stock becomes a subtle upgrade, there's no reason not to pick it
Also, stock pairs really well with the shotgun and flare gun, because you turn the question "will I live afterburn" into an answer: No

for me the stock is usually more useful (or rather the back burner). The thing about afterburn is that at least you leave your enemies on lower health than they otherwise would be, forcing them to fall back to medkits that might be on cool down, their most of the time non-existent medics or the lockers. For the most part when I play, it's in these situations where the medic might as well not be there, the dispenser is too far away, there are no health kits, there's no water and there's barely anyone that can throw something to extinguish you. Even for me, I died more times from afterburn than I saved my skin from it because of the damage

faster weapon switch is so good for pyro

As a Pyro main who uses the degreaser, the airblast ammo penalty doesn’t ever really come into effect with me as I’m almost always playing around my engineer who 9 times out of 10 has a dispenser up. So I really just kinda see it a straight upgrade to stock the way I use it, primarily as a combo and defensive tool.

Flare-punching is viable regardless of switch speed, and the panic attack is less accurate with consecutive shots which is why I feel stock shotgun is better for stock flamethrower. When I first started playing TF2, I didn't have internet, I had _shit-ernet._ You know that old archetype of the laggy gibus pyro? Well, I was the _posterchild_ for that. I never used the flare gun, since hitting people with a hitscan shotgun was already pretty damn taxing; hitting someone with a projectile, twice in a row, _without being able to rely on splash damage,_ was out of the question. So, I got pretty attached to the stock shotgun. Even after getting somewhat decent internet, the stock shotgun was still my go-to for a number of years.
What does all this have to do with the stock flamethrower? Well, like you said, stock goes pretty well with the panic attack. After I watched Uncle Dane's revisit of the panic attack, I decided to try it out. The panic attack quickly grew on me, to the point where it's basically my default shotgun. Personally, I only ever use the stock shotgun on battle engie now. Stock flamethrower and panic attack are basically my peanut butter and jelly.

Ok so this will sound strange but...
I often use stock because yes, I do often enough use afterburn as a means to finish off enemies. Not always, and not as a thing I "rely on" as some fingers crossed primary means to make kills from suicide wm1'ing... keyword, use. I use it as a tool in my arsenal.
What I mean is, after thousands of hours, I think it's possible to develop an almost instinctual sense of when an opponent of a certain class should typically be at say, ~30 health or less. You start to notice... patterns. Like almost subconsciously. Same as you know when to reflect a rocket or pill at point blank.
    It simply works like this:
This many tic-tic-tic-tics of the flamethrower, mixed with this many pops of a detonator shot and the factor of this reflect hit him, means this soldier without immediate intervention is going to die in a likely range of x-seconds to x-seconds. That's been the case for 300 times before, it'll be so this time. Likelihood of him reaching healthpack from that many tic-tics flare bang pow, low. Factor in he's at elevation thus self damage from a rocket jump yes or now, this solder is going to die in a range of Y-toY-seconds if I do these attacks, or, he's just going to get away if I don't land this flare, like These 300 instances prior...
Mental conclusion, I'm going to get my own healthpack instead of trying for this last flare. Meanwhile, yep my weird "sense" was right again he burned to death.
I think the lower damage of the det compared to flare thus leading to more afterburn kills sort of helps to develop this weird sense.
I know right, it SEEMS crazy, and it seems noobish and yes there's like 30 different ways to counteract afterburn but... dude it's true. It's pattern recognition and seeing the same timings of things hundreds of instances before. "This guy's going to die of afterburn 80% chance, like all the other this-many-tic-tic-tic+flare+flare I've done before on this class, I'm doing something else right now or getting into a different position instead of going for another flare because I've seen this" turns out to be a correct guess for me 4 times out of 5 when I just get that... afterburn "feeling."
The same applies for scouts, heavies without a pocket, engies... I just have noticed that certain combinations of damage means how much likelihood they're going to die of afterburn if left to it. If you could read my mind I'd be able to tell you how much flame and/or with flare combo it takes to kill an engy camping at a lvl 1,2, or a lvl 3 dispenser, for instance, down to the fraction of a second and lag between flames and flares. I could show you how much for fully overhealed enemies if their med goes down.
Medics with their regen, fairly fast speed, improved survivability if they're healing and the fact everyone wants to save the medic make them harder for me to pin down that way though, margins are too narrow. Too many variables.
And all that before getting into different maps and their health packs, and distances to likely dispensers. Sorry for the long comment. Maybe I'm just schizo. But I can feel the burn, man.

You're really good at the 'know when the enemy isn't going to get to a health source' bit of afterburn then, definitely in the video I bash stock flamethrower a bit, but afterburn is pretty strong against weaker players. Probably should have mentioned that in the video lmao, but yeah in 9v9 Highlander for example, afterburn is pretty weak since players are rarely out of position, more consistent sources of health, less weird plays, etc. If you're good with the stock flamethrower then absolutely keep using it, just consider the Degreaser since it can be used to great effect and surpasses the stock flamethrower once you get really good at quick switching, knowing when enemies will die to afterburn, reapplying 4 damage afterburn with flares, etc. Chees

@@Pirateer5 Absolutely valid points made, more cohesion as well skill certainly diminishes the utility you can get out of simple afterburn. It often just converts it into uber-feed. Crazy what coordinating a medic with a roamer able to stand still for a key split second on a bolt can accomplish.
No mistake, I enjoy what I've become capable of with stock, pyro has so much about it as a class emphasizing to develop a sense of practiced, precise timing. My pleasure with casual stock doesn't make it a be-all-end-all by any means.
After watching some those quick-switch reflects you presented here, I do think I need to play around with the degreaser more. I'm seeing the possibilities of a lot of flare and hit scan shots at close ranges there, that would usually mean getting punished with stock.

You continue to make some great freaking content on this platform, with tasty clips that show what your speaking of, and just enjoyable to watch. You are one of my favorite youtubers now. In my opinion, pyro lives and dies by his secondary’s. It’s how he contributes to a fight if he can’t get in close. In that sense, you want to have them out as much as possible since they are how you pump out damage with either afterburn or shotgun chip damage. With that in mind, the extra switch speed saves you so much from reflects when you absolutely need it, while giving you the saftey you need to keep getting value for your team while you’re waiting for the enemy team to push up.

IMO stock does promote the defensive play style, especially for pybro. It should be used for strong damage with your secondary being used for a hard finishing hit with either shotgun or flare. Degreaser is better for a more aggressive play style, where you are confident in securing the kill then and there, but lacks the versatility of dealing with multiple weakened opponents.

  • @bitnn4703
    @bitnn4703 Місяць тому +1

In my opinion, the degreaser is far better then the Stock for a couple reasons:
    1. If your combo'ing properly, you won't have to rely on afterburn damage to finish the job. A lot of combo's, like Degreaser + Panic Attack or Degreaser + Most Flare Guns, deal very high damage, making it very easy to kill most classes (with the exception of Heavy) if you line up your shots correctly. However, it does take a good bit of skill to do, so newer players would likely be better off with Stock. Experienced Players though can have a field day though, whooping the enemy team.
    2. As long as you are careful with your Airblasts, the measly 2 missing airblasts you get from the degreaser can be entirely ignored by A. Just having an Engineer on your team. Or B. Playing around Ammo Packs more. Again, this is for mostly experienced players, but if you have an Engineer on the team, who will most likely place the dispenser in a easy to reach area not far from your team, its almost nonexistent.

In my experience, I'd use stock for pybro/defensive games, and use either the Dragons fury for full offence/flank control or Degreaser for Offensive support. The DF is the only primary in pyro's kit that can fight at mid-range and reliably beat a heavy in a 1v1, but it has the second most nerfed airblast behind the phlog. Its dps is no joke, but its a lot harder to aim.

    • @Pirateer5
      @Pirateer5  3 роки тому +1

pack in tyres is miles away + on flank, sometimes contested and very far from the choke (the window mini health)
pack in house (mega ammo + mini health) is usually held by defenders unless attackers push into it
pack in the fence bit (mini ammo + mini health) sure, but it's the same distance just running to the dispenser from the choke that you may as well go to your dispenser
my point isn't that there's no mini health packs for the attackers, it's more that the defenders have incredibly easy and safe access to more sources of health (mini health, medics, dispensers, resupply)
in comparison the attackers have to rely on contested sources of health (several health packs on contested flank areas), risky sources of health (the cart, health packs in sniper sightlines), or retreat much further than defenders to get to safer sources of health (medic behind choke, dispenser behind choke)
      Cheers

if i'm being a defensive team player, protecting the medic and such, setting ppl on fire with the detonator, then i prefer stock. The afterburn helps finish off people who overextend and there's probably a slight upside with the airblast cost but it hardly matters. Frankly i'm a dragon's fury lover, so the consistent switch speed sort of reinforces my muscle memory. Weirdly enough i actually use the detonator sort of as a finisher? like if they're out of range, i fire off a flare and det it knowing full well i'm going to do like 15 damage, but it also helps with the dragon's fury's short afterburn length. but, the real reason I use stock over degreaser?

The degreaser is better for high burst damage loadouts that incentivize getting the kill quickly. While I do use combos with stock It’s mainly with my go to stock shotgun so I can maximize my damage with not weapons while not needed to rely on combos as much. If I want to play defensively I can, I can also play offensively, I could just W+M1, or I could be a dirty rat bastard and spray someone with fire, hit them with a slug and walk away saying thanks as they slowing die within the next 2 seconds.

    I'm surprised no-one's mentioning scouts.
One thing that makes me put away my degreaser in favour of stock is when there is one or more scouts annoying me. Full afterburn damage is really punishing for scouts who think they can get up close, hit a few meatshots and escape largely unscathed. Even if both of you survive that scout's not going to be doing anything useful for 10-20 seconds as they scramble to stop themselves dying. I appreciate the flare guns apply full afterburn (wtf that needs a nerf) but the scout's mobility makes that unreliable.
Great video, by the way. Lots of great details in there (I hope people don't miss them as I felt my concentration slipping to the gameplay sometimes). Especially liked points about how afterburn affects red and blue differently in A/D scenarios.

I love using the combo of stock Flamethrower and the Panic Attack against Scouts. They're not gonna dodge the shotgun blast to which they can't react, and full afterburn damage is a well deserved "fuck you" to their dodginess and thinking that they can survive being in your favourable range.
I play Scout a lot and I can tell that the Degreaser afterburn is a joke, but the full damage afterburn is what usually kills me when I fight Pyros.

More of the habits thing. Like i tried decreaser and noticed only that afterburn doesn't exist anymore. I'll probably give it another go, but it'll take time to get used to faster switch speed coz brain just doesn't see it
    10:52
That's all true, but i got so many kills just because of 1-2 seconds of normal afterburn, that decreaser wouldnt be able to apply. (But i never intentionally rely on afterburn unless it's crit flare against 125 hp classes (which tbh does not suffer from degreasers afterburn coz the flate reapplies it) )
also before that video i would consider myself intermediate pyromain, but looks like am only the beginner:( From my pov i would add that stock is better when u r dealing with more (in relation to u) experienced players (community servers and stuff) coz u'll not be able to hit combos that consistently, especially on scouts, and increased afterburn may turn 0:1 into 1:1 situation quite often;)
