Great cars. A good friend of mine had a 1979 with a 260 and we swapped out the engine for a 403, tons of fun. He put 442 on the side but we all knew it was fake but no one cared it was cool.

In 1986, I bought a 46 Chrysler coup for one dollar. It had been sitting in the garage since the elderly owner died, about 20+ yrs. We did the same thing ant it started up. We drove it home. It had about 200 original miles on it, it was all there including the chrome, but one corner of the headliner had come loose. It was a great find.

Really nice find there! Certainly needs some work to be great, but still -- excellent condition for having sat in a barn for 17 years. My first car was a '76 Cutlass S (I was the 2nd owner) so I've always had a soft spot for these Cutlasses.

My first car was a '79 Supreme with a 305 with a wiped cam lobe on cyl 7. Ran like shit and backfired out the carb occasionally but I loved that car. Had a '78 after that with a worked over 400 Pontiac, and got an '88 Cutlass Supreme Classic Brougham stored now.

    Hey fellas. Nice find.
The two tubes that stick up vertically and are cut at an angle on that Holley are the bowl vents. You can pour fuel into them to fill the bowls.
Don't bother filling the secondary if you're just lighting it.

  • @scdevon

Nice work. That's a super rare car with the 4 speed and the factory gauge package. Still a low performance smog car when new, but rare anyhow. I'm not a fan of Holley carburetors but it looks like that small block Chevy has been warmed over a little bit even though it has stock exhaust manifolds on it. A a properly set up QuadraJet carburetor would be a much better match for that engine.

Pour gas down through the angled vent tubes...they go to the float chamber...you'll be able to get the accelerator pump working provided the O rings don't leak.

Incredible that any car that's been in an automotive coma that long was so eager to fire up. All machines develop personality over time, and you could almost hear this old workhorse telling them "You want to get me on the road again? Just give me a minute, and I'll be ready for the trailer."

There were 3 engine options for that car... only one was an Olds engine! 231 Buick V6, 260 olds V8 and the power option was a Chevy 305 with a 4 barrel. The Olds 260 was rated at a screaming 105
The frame rusted out on mine in just 10 years... sold it in '89.

Nice find man I was not surprised when that SBC fired right up, I did the same with a firebird that sat for 14 years. I was looking at all the comments about it having the wrong engine, people just don't know about these cars. I get a lot of crap for having a sbc in my car but that is what it came with. I found the original build sheet for my car which was cool. Do any of your cars have the factory aluminium hood?

I would check your choke pull off first to see if it holds vacuum. That would be the easiest start. Just disconnect the vac line, push it down and hold your thumb over it and it should stay down until you release your thumb. I am not sure what it costs to have a carb rebuilt because I rebuild my own so never quoted one out. You will have to do a little research yourself on that.

'77 was the last year an Olds engine came stock in an A body. '78 is when GM started playing musical engines. '78 Olds A body had the SBC. Mid size Cadillacs had the Olds engine. Pontiac engines ceased production totally. In the mid 80's Full size RWD Cadillacs had Olds engines and then in 90 they had SBC. Olds ceased production of V8's around that time.

Back in the late 70's GM started putting SBC engines in Oldsmobiles. They were attempting to save money by not having two distinct engines they would have to support. Unfortunately, they never told the public. One guy who thought he had an Olds with an Olds engine sued GM for false advertising. Oldsmobiles were sold under the marketing banner of "Olds Rocket V8" and other assorted names. GM lost the suit and were forced to tell all buyers of Oldsmobiles what kind of engine they had. They also got an extended warranty.
