  • Tom Cotter literally wrote the book(s) on barn finds, including the award-winning "In the Barn" series. Tom firmly believes that there are great classics to be found all over the country. Ride shotgun this season for our new series, "The Barn Find Hunter," in which Tom travels the country in his '39 Ford Woodie seeking out forgotten treasures. We're pleased to share the pilot episode, and we'd love your feedback, especially your recommendations for cities Tom should visit next.
Check out Tom's latest book, "Barn Find Road Trip," here: amzn.to/1UeBfuu

This is GREAT! Love it, and Tom knows his stuff. Doesn't have to always be "on", or always have a smart-ass answer like most cable shows. I really hop you guys (Hagerty) can put a little cash behind this and do a full season of 30 or 60 minute episodes. Well done!

There are plenty of cars way out in the dessert and just around your area stored in garages/barns. I used to tour New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Utah in the 1980s with my truck and trailer when I lived in San Jose CA. Found lots of muscle cars and hot rods out there

Hey Tom: Most of the places you have gone there have been numbers of 48-54 Chevy pickups. Look into and ask about those some too. They're VERY popular these days and quite "pricey" in the classifieds so finding one in one of these places at a "reasonable" cost would be like striking gold.

There are still cars out there. I found a 1948 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe in a garage in Connecticut. It hadn't run in 20 years but the engine was free. 40k original miles. After getting it running and cleaning it up I have a stunning all original and beautiful car. Paint, upholstery and chrome in fantastic condition. The asking price was just $2k.

Tom thanks for checking out the FJ40 "Cruiser". I have a 1974 Cruiser and have been in love with these vehicles since I was in college and would borrow my friends cruiser. In case you wanted know, the one that you showed had the "Ambulance" doors on the back end and this is the most desirable of the options on rear access. I have the same design on mine. Also, Toyota made these compatible with a lot of Chevy parts. The standard five lug tire pattern and the conversion to a 350 small block is pretty easy and common. Thanks for sharing, keep your eye out for these, they are great restoration projects and worth investing in.

I had an FJ45 short wheel base Toyota in the 1980's and it was a very, good 4wd. The ride was a little rough with the drivers position so close to the rear axle but in my opinion? In terms of reliability it was a better all round vehicle than a land Rover hands down. You only had to drive by a garden sprinkler for the Lucas electrics in Land Rover's to give trouble but that Toyota would happily wallow in water like a hippo. I was told by a mechanic friend that the big six cylinder engine in the FJ45 was basically a Japanese copy of the Chev Blue Flame motor. It sure gulped the fuel, but the whole thing was as solid as a tank and probably more reliable.

Spokane 1963 you could find a lot of these cars in the newspaper ad section, 1948 Ford coupe and spare parts $200.00. The spare parts were from 5 other post war coupes, it took 3 trips with a pickup to get the extra parts.

The number one classic car killers are old guys that say “I’ll get to it one day” no money and not enough time in life to finish then. You can see this by when they show their shop and it’s full of dust and haven’t been touched in years. I’ve seen this time and time again in Texas, they pass and the state steps in and sends them to the crusher.

New Mexico is very dry, so cars don't rust without really being out for a long long time. Since the sun is so strong many owners hide their babies away. As a result NM AZ West TX and such are gold mines. I know where this place is, but there are more in the same area. South of there, many decades ago I was cruising a ditch bank (Irrigation canal) and spotted a gullwing MB sitting faded under a hay shed roof. The American west is awesome. That's why I live here. AZ should be even more amazing for Barn car hunting.

$40-50K for an old 80's Wagoneer? No way. $2500 buys a running and driving example around here. Most people who have these old cars have them for two reasons: one they won't ever sell or two they want fully restored prices. That's why they're still where they are. I know where several are located right now and for the reasons above they'll continue to stay there.

Here in the UK we don't scrap yards like this anymore. Regulations to prevent oil and other chemicals leaching into the soil has killed the traditional scrap yard. There are still cars and bikes to be found on private property. The literal barn find.

      @235chuck 8 років тому +10

+Stephen Morrish (PendragonUK) Many of the scrap yards here in the U.S.A. are gone, for similar reasons. The cash for clunkers program took many still good cars off the road and crushed even more would be parts donors. Sad. LOL, some of the cars they got rid of were equal to or better than modern vehicles in terms of fuel economy. The whole program was a WASTE and a FAILURE!

The last place they stopped..."This is a good deal." None of those were good deals for what the owner was asking. After driving there, driving out, hauling home, and only getting one car...you'd have spent way too much. $4500 for a Grand Wagoneer? $5000 for the FJ? Not deals, and the VW price was high too. The guy just didn't have the ability to call the owner out on how absurd his prices were.

i just started watching this series, but it made me think, will we still be having restorable barn finds in the future? because it's been 20 years since the OBD2 standard was implemented, and i'm already seeing people pulling out cars that were computerized from factory out of garages and barns and listing them as "barn finds." sure the body might be great and the car might be low miles, but what is wrong with it? for example, i know of a 1995 Chevy S-10 barn find around here. it has only 200 original factory miles on it. what ended up happening to it that caused it to sit for so long? well the battery that came with it turned out to be junk, and died after 200 miles. so what ended up happening was they got a replacement, but hooked it in backwards, causing all the computers to be fried. Fast forward to 2016, the guy never got it fixed, and the computer it needs is no longer being made. so essentially, although the engine is in perfect shape, it will never run again simply because the computer it needs is just simply not available. and sure, you can easily get one from a junkyard as it's just a cheap common 90's vehicle. however where my concern lies is fast forward another 20 years. these spare parts will be harder to find, as the S-10 then will look like how we see a El Camino now. the parts wont be a case of "just get from a junkyard," you'd have to rely on a third party company to make replacement computer modules of varying quality, or have to track down a factory one, which will most likely be very pricy, and only come from completely rotted out field finds.i mean sure there is a Plan B already being looked into, which is to program a Raspberry Pi to replace it, and from their popularity it's easy to assume that something similar would still exist, but even this path brings about it's own problems, such as needing to write the code from scratch and have to attach the wires to it's own custom pinout

Is it possible to rig it up so that it doesn't need a computer anymore? Dicking around with third-party crap is a pay cut!

Marshall Curtis sadly with it being an EFI system, there is no way to get it running without replacing the computer, and even if you did, it still wouldn't be road legal, as all the lights are controlled by the computer, and the Transmission also has an electronic control module. Moving away from the S-10 a second, I know of some vehicles where you can't even put it into neutral if the computer doesn't work.

Justin Noker You sound like a procrastinator. Who's looking for reasons not to start on a project. Just dive into it and worry about that if it happens. You'll probably like it

Codey Hanna well while I am kind of one, I am saying it as it is. As an auto tech student I can pretty much guarantee you that it either needs the factory ECU or find an aftermarket one that's compatible, it's the only way to get it running

I like your Sneak Peek! Found the end of the segment where you visit the scrap yard and talk about the value of specific vehicles more satisfying than the beginning of the segment. Lifting dust covers was fun, but I didn't learn anything or get to see the whole car. You are up against shows like American Pickers with a solid "Get". Negotiating a price. Will they get the car? Yes, no? That format delivers more drama for the viewer. Since your show isn't about buying and restoring the barn finds, the more information the viewer gets about the vehicle, the better. Good Luck!
