My parents had this exact same car when I was a kid. Have pictures of it as well. Silver with a black vinyl roof 4 speed 428. Red interior. It was the family car and pulled a camper with it. Gone but not forgotten.
Quality when quality when stood for something real. I am impressed with this car. Good old American manufacturing which no longer exists. I remember the 1965 Ford Galaxie series when they were new (and I was a kid). The local Ford dealer had sheets of brown paper over the showroom windows and on a September day in 1964 they removed the brown paper and turned on bright spotlights on a 1965 Galaxie 500 LTD four door hardtop, a 1965 Galaxie 500 XL 2 dr hardtop and a few 1965 Mustangs. Those were fun years for cars.
A friend had one of these when I was a freshman in college. His was called a 7 liter and had 7 liter emblems on both front sides. A fairly rare car. There was also a 427 cid version also which was a solid lifter motor for oval track racing. this is a street version. Worth fixing up!
Nice! I had one of these and loved it! It had a 390 and auto trans though. I loved the way it rode and drove. One of my all time favorite cars of the 30+ I've owned over the years.
FORD Strong! Wish I had been into Fords back in the day. I wasted years and money on junky Mopar autos. I have now been a Ford man for the past 15 years and have had great service! I do miss some of the old Ford designs though. Thanks for uploading!
Always loved the graceful looks of the Galaxie 500. It has that classy "Apollo 13-era" look that I alawys find intriguing. They were HUGE cars, and build like tanks.
I started a slant six after 38 years. primed the carb, topped off the OLD oil and it fired on the first rotation, and held a steady idle at 600 rpm until the fuel bowl went dry. I fixed the fuel line, and ran about a gallon of gas with 3 oz seafoam addative in it. After about 30 miutes of fast and slow idle, I changed the oil hot and the oil was so thick draining, it took about 15 minutes for it all to ooze out. I dumped a gallon of diesel in there and started it for about 5 seconds to clean the rest out. Came out pretty clean. Those old low compression motors didnt care about the fuel quality.
This car has waited 31 years for this moment to come!! You guys made me feel good about that ZZR1100 I have mothballed for 10 years and I am about to start next week...
I came within a gnats whisker of being able to bring a '66 Galaxie four door. Just like this one, the body was solid and the chrome was amazingly shiny. Congrats on the find!
my father bought one of these in 1978. it was dark blue with a red interior. When his mom came over she'd park her 1969 cougar xr7 beside it. one of my best memories :D
I have a '66 Galaxie 500! it's not an XL, it only has a 289 in it, but i'm so happy to see this video! Ford was on their game when they made the 66 galaxie. I drive mine every day, and i love it. i wish more people would drive old cars.
my uncle sold new fords in 1966. the best one he had in 66 was a demo that was an ltd 2 door hardtop.it was a olive green with a darker green vynyl roof.it was loaded and had the 428.it was a column shift cruiseamatic.i have never seen one like it since. i love the one you have there. thx
I feel sad now... A few years back, I was living with my biological father and he had bought a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 with a 289 V-8. He hoped that I would be able to get it restored. Bad thing is, I am no mechanic nor have any aspirations of being one plus I never was able to get enough money together to get it done. Eventually, I had no choice but to let it go for scrap. Looking at these sort of videos now makes me wonder what I gave up on or could've had. Best of luck on your restoration. To those who have a Classic Car like this rotting on your lot... Please, if you cannot fix it or drive it, sell it to someone who CAN, BEFORE it winds up becoming some expensive project. These cars are getting pretty rare and I CAN tell you that they are worth fixing. The one I had was a real pleasure to drive... At least when it was running. PLEASE, DON'T make my mistake. Take care of your car or sell to someone who can. It'll be worth it. Thanks!
+Christopher Althouse >> I agree. The Ford 289 was bullet proof. The worst place to store a car is on dirt/grass. The moisture rots the frames. Too bad you didn't get a chance to get your '66 running. They were great cars!
Jimmy Kraktov I did have it running for a good little while... Even drove it from the East Coast of Florida over to near the Gulf Coast to visit family. I just was never really able to put together enough money to get it running RIGHT. :( That said... While I was able to drive it it was great fun. That dual exhaust was LOUD and the 289 just screamed POW-WER!!! :D Ahhhh... Memories
Christopher Althouse yep working hundred hour weeks with a bitch for an ole lady will have you scrapping a 71 mustang fast back or a 68 mustang or a 67 came to or a number of cars that are now scrapped.
me and my dad had the same kind of luck with a 72 ford f250 that had been parked since 1984 that we bought this year, we hooked up a battery gave it a bit of gas and fired her up and she ran like a dream. no leaks 50 lbs of oil pressure and a transmision that shifts clean. well worth what we paidfor it
when i was born my dad's daily driver was a 73 Dodge Charger SE with a swapped in 440 Six pack (replacing the original 400ci). my uncle's daily driver up until the early 80s was a 70 Mustang Boss 429. they drove these cars in the winter, rain, to the store and on long trips with no problems. everybodys different.
You are right. The man I bought this from purchased it brand new and he waited 9 months to get it after he ordered it. It has not ever had any changes made to it. Every nut and bolt that came from the factory is still on it. I also bought a 1967 mustang fastback with 13,000 actual miles on it from this same man. He bought it brand new also. He is 83 years old and just liked these cars back in the 60's.
I have a 65 Galaxie that was a 352 and Cruiso, but has a 500 hp 390 I built with a C6. I am blind and will never drive it. I had so much fun with it. My son and I built it from the ground up.
Oh man, she's sweet, would love to see it after a few cosmetic touch ups and new paint job, bets she's beautiful! You guys got a sweet deal, it's in remarkably good shape for its age!
I had a 67 500 just like that and it was the same story, sat since 72, towed to a scrap yard, i rescued her for $300 and had her running as fast as you did... Not as rare as that one, but still, a 2 door post car... rare
Those 7 liter Galaxies are awesome! - back in HS a buddy had a 390 '67 Galaxie he paid $300 for we used to play with....until the frame broke and we couldnt open the doors any more
im calling bs on the carb working. i just did this to the EXACT SAME CAR. check it out. fires up beautifully after 20 years. 428 4 speed car. all it needed was a fresh holley on top of the intake. total 100 percent barn find, fired up right in the barn.
This car is super rare even though it looks rough and it's 100% complete and original. These big block Galaxies were some of the best super stock American cars ever. In 1966, this car could deliver an ass-whoopin' to almost any other stock vehicle on the street. They weren't that heavy by todays standards, either (3600 lbs. ????)
wow... cant believe it didn't smoke...I've pulled plugs & let Slick 50 soak overnight...change oil...hand turn engine a bit...thanks for a good video !
My father recently bought a 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 XL that has a 352 in it. It was in a garage for 12 years and not started for 13 years. The points and condenser was bad so he replaced them and it runs almost perfect but it needs a tune up and a new carb.
Hoping my "new" 57 Thunderbird starts that easy. Been sitting since 69 in a heated garage. Came loaded with good intentions and a decent amount of NOS chrome. The only parts missing are a carb and air cleaner. Look out Ebay, here I come!
Pretty impressive. My jaw dropped a bit when it started right up. Awesome find. Its all pretty amazing considering newer cars have a harder time starting after just a few years sitting.
Now tell me you're NOT going to put a 'small block Chevy.' in this car. That's what a lot of guys do when they find a priceless old car !!! No power windows, no power brakes,..( at least I couldn't see the booster ) What a beautiful and dandy CLASSIC. Jay Leno would like to see this one, I'm thinking.
Nice car!! I had a 63 Galaxy 500xl was an automatic with I think a 289 or 302. Was a rust bucket so I sold her man do I regret that. My dad has a 63 Mercury comet my dad has been redoing it for about 15 years. It just had the motor rebuilt. It's a big block automatic (dad was trying something new he never did a big block automatic car) it makes about 550hp to the rear wheels. Now it has a bad carb its an eldlbrock that he bought new when the motor was put together. But the carb don't feed enough fuel so it starts hard and don't idle worth crap. It also has a major vacuum leak. The rear tires are about 18 1/2 inches wide and you should here what the cops say about those marks on the road. Can't wait to see it run with the new carb. It turns on quick now couldn't imagine it with the new carb. Awesome to see another galaxie being brought back from the dead!!
Everything has a reason or story behind it that's why it was left there after all of those years. If it was yours or mine we wouldn't do that lol but some people don't give a shit or realize what they have.
A lot of the time there are all sorts of other things that need fixing, maybe there's a lot of play in the steering and a wheel bearing has died or something, perhaps the brakes were no good.
The owner is still alive. 86 years old. I also bought a 67 mustang fastback from him that he bought new and it only has 13,000 actual miles on it. It is is in good shape for setting outside since 1969.
wow i'm a mopar guy but i like some old fords and chevy's i like the old galaxies 59 to 66 my fave is 64 you have a cool car there i love the length of the shifter and a 428 thats bitchen' dudes.
great FE engines, had a 1963 galaxie over 20 years bought it from the original owner it sat in a garage for 20 years, works and drives perfect and i drove for 20 more years and eventually sold it for $20,000 of course it was restored but not the engine. even the original auto trans and power steering all worked perfect.
There's a 1966 7 Litre convertible right here in Waco that sits under a carport, still owned by its original owner who bought it when he graduated from high school. It has 4-spd, factory AC, every option, but he hasn't run it in years.
I owned a '66 Galaxie 500 but it had a 352 with an automatic.Same shade of blue. You have a nice car there, bud.I would suggest you take a look at the frame. The '65-'66 had a habit of frame cracking in the front.Mine broke at the rear, right before the axle/diff, and that was in '78!Drove it until I got a bunch of repair order tickets. Then I sold it to the junk man.
Awesome find my dad traded a Holley double pumper for a 65 ltd 2 dr ht original everything 352 4v c4 crush velvet interior ran as well... Sat in an open field with beer cans up to the seats. Has 328,754.4 miles runs so smooth barely hear it
It would take a little work, however there is very little rust. The same guy who had this had a 67 mustang fastback with 12,000 actual miles on it he bought brand new. It was parked outside also. I bought it along with the Galaxie.
Thanx for the video. That's one fine car that is. There was one very lucky teen in my town who had a red one with the same engine. Brand new! How he managed to keep his licence is a mystery. That car screamed when he cut loose. Do you have more videos about this one? Love to see it all prettied up :~)
If it was black inside and black vinyl top white paint that would be my Dad's car , I miss that old car , Can you keep us posted on the restorations Very nice find I wish it was me. Thanks for the memories .
The car deserves a total renovation of chrome, interior chassis and engine. But the paint has naturally faded and should only be cleaned of all loose on the surface to be painted above in semi-gloss lacquer that maintains the state of decomposition of the car's surface as it is found. This will make people first think "what a pile of junk" to see details at close range and they will think "cool car, good work" This is just my idea of what could be done about the car Whatever I think I am glad that it is in loving hands by enthusiasts who take care of her.
not surprising to see it start right up my truck had been sitting almost as long and we changed the oil fuel and battery and it took a second but if fired up and have been driving it since
My parents had this exact same car when I was a kid. Have pictures of it as well. Silver with a black vinyl roof 4 speed 428. Red interior. It was the family car and pulled a camper with it. Gone but not forgotten.
There's nothing unbelievable about it! Old Fords never die- They just keep on running. Nice find by the way.
Back in the early 70's,my parents had a 1966 Country Squire wagon with a 390 in it.Man I loved that thing. So much room and plenty of power.
I'm impressed! That is a well built car. Personally, I think 1966 was a good year for Ford. I used to have a '66 F100. I loved that truck.
Quality when quality when stood for something real. I am impressed with this car. Good old American manufacturing which no longer exists. imagine driving that off the lot brand new.
+austin tatious imagine drinking raw sewage, mmmm..
+Arlin Adler I was just thinking the same thing. That's not just a car, it's a work of art...
Fix that huge vacuum leak and it’d run a lot better !!
Always loved the graceful looks of the Galaxie 500. It has that classy "Apollo 13-era" look that I alawys find intriguing. They were HUGE cars, and build like tanks.

I love seeing old forgotten cars get life breathed back into them and seeing them start right up after so long, freaking awesome.
I always pull coil wire when firing something up that old ,primes oil pump and fuel pump. Love to see it restored.
awesome car!!!! glad you rescued it.
Hi Scott!! U are the STAR of the show!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!

Not really a Ford fan but I'm glad that this car was brought back to life!
no smoke, amazing.

Back in their day these big ol' Galaxie "XL"s were some of the best looking cars on the road. And with the right engine they were fast as hell.
Blue Falcon 64

Faithful old soldier... I know it's dumb to anthropomorphize machinery, but still, brings a warm fuzzy feeling and a bit of a tear to the eye. =)
Just like everytime I listen to the Beatles also sista! 12.58 pm cst 8/28/18
I love this kind of stuff. Thanks for posting!
Again great car . Do you have any updates ?
Oh man, she's sweet, would love to see it after a few cosmetic touch ups and new paint job, bets she's beautiful! You guys got a sweet deal, it's in remarkably good shape for its age!
yep
I'm JEALOUS !!! Beautiful car. I don't nit pick about Ford, Chevy, etc...ALL the old cars are beautiful to me. Thanks for the vid.
Looks like a sweet 64-66 Chevy 1/2 ton in front of it.
What a sweet find! It reminds me of my first car, a '65 Galaxie 500 with a 427 and C6 auto.
This new crap can't compare to those REAL cars.
My first new car was a '65 Galaxie 500 with automatic. Dark blue with a blue and silver-ish blue interior.
65 Galaxy 427 was not available with a C6 auto.???
I noticed nothing fell off the wing while the engine ran. That is smooth. All the best with it.
I wish i would have seen it sitting in that field.Great find one of the great vintage fords.
From Im so jealous MIKE
This car is super rare even though it looks rough and it's 100% complete and original.
These big block Galaxies were some of the best super stock American cars ever. In 1966, this car could deliver an ass-whoopin' to almost any other stock vehicle on the street. They weren't that heavy by todays standards, either (3600 lbs. ????)
+scdevon Their claim to fame was a plurality of NASCAR wins particularly on big superspeedways.
wow... cant believe it didn't smoke...I've pulled plugs & let Slick 50 soak overnight...change oil...hand turn engine a bit...thanks for a good video !
My father recently bought a 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 XL that has a 352 in it. It was in a garage for 12 years and not started for 13 years. The points and condenser was bad so he replaced them and it runs almost perfect but it needs a tune up and a new carb.
This was before clutch safety switchs, Just make sure the car is in neutral before cranking the engine
2 thumbs way up fellas, hope you guys got some videos of this old girl restored to her former glory
great find, please tell me you are going to restore it.
Hoping my "new" 57 Thunderbird starts that easy. Been sitting since 69 in a heated garage. Came loaded with good intentions and a decent amount of NOS chrome. The only parts missing are a carb and air cleaner. Look out Ebay, here I come!
My dad had a 1967 Gallaxie 500 it had a 390 it was a sweet car :)
thats awsome how she just fired right up like that after so long. Thanks for the video
this gives me a little more hope on getting my 73 amx started after 7 years of sitting outside. right now it cranks, it just won't fire.
I used to own a Galaxy 500 cant remember what model it was, iam in the UK and the car was right hand drive and auto...Loved it!!
That sound i'll never forget it love it any new updates Thanks for sharing
Awesome to see another galaxie being brought back from the dead!!
beautiful vehicle.
It's a Ford! It might take a bit to start and get up to idle, but they'll start!
Love these cars even the Ford Farelane miss my Mercury 1966
Great find!
Good job done ..
Great! Coming from Spain! Love those American cars! Thank you for saving her!
Congratulations on your build, I hope you do it in a deep burgundy or something majestic like that
Cool old ride. Curious why it was abandoned in running condition. I'm a big Ford guy and Galaxie fan. Would love to see that rare beast restored.
Yes why was it parked?
Everything has a reason or story behind it that's why it was left there after all of those years. If it was yours or mine we wouldn't do that lol but some people don't give a shit or realize what they have.
A lot of the time there are all sorts of other things that need fixing, maybe there's a lot of play in the steering and a wheel bearing has died or something, perhaps the brakes were no good.
The owner is still alive. 86 years old. I also bought a 67 mustang fastback from him that he bought new and it only has 13,000 actual miles on it. It is is in good shape for setting outside since 1969.
wow beautiful car my older brother had a 1965
What a beast!! Who wouldn't want a gorgeous car like this. Do it up , restore it from ground up and re register it. Perfect cruiser .
Cristina Searle
Good shape for sitting in a cold climate area all that time, one would expect more rust . Nice find..
Did they change the oil/radiator fluid first?
damn thats cool as hell!!!! 428 4 speed. did the same on a 8ba flathead last yr. still runnin!
wow i'm a mopar guy but i like some old fords and chevy's i like the old galaxies 59 to 66 my fave is 64 you have a cool car there i love the length of the shifter and a 428 thats bitchen' dudes.
I hope you changed the oil and lubed the top of cylinders before you started it.
Good luck with your build and please post it when you get finished
I had a 69 Merc Cyclone 428 super cobra jet. Drove it to high school!
Still 30 years and starts right up!
I am a battered 55 chevy. I may start riugh, but I can still make it down the street! :-)
great FE engines, had a 1963 galaxie over 20 years bought it from the original owner it sat in a garage for 20 years, works and drives perfect and i drove for 20 more years and eventually sold it for $20,000 of course it was restored but not the engine. even the original auto trans and power steering all worked perfect.
There's a 1966 7 Litre convertible right here in Waco that sits under a carport, still owned by its original owner who bought it when he graduated from high school. It has 4-spd, factory AC, every option, but he hasn't run it in years.
I bought a 66 Ford LTD 4 door brand new and had it for 15 years. It had a 302 V8 in it. Night mist blue.
Then I sold it to the junk man.
any updates? Reminds me of my Dad's car.! Hope you fixed it up!
Awesome find my dad traded a Holley double pumper for a 65 ltd 2 dr ht original everything 352 4v c4 crush velvet interior ran as well... Sat in an open field with beer cans up to the seats. Has 328,754.4 miles runs so smooth barely hear it
I had a 1966 Galaxie 500 7-Litre convertible, wish I had never sold it.
Those are pretty rare.
72Disco1998
I had to sell it do to not having a job and had bills to pay. :(
Had one but it was a auto with the 352. This is a bad ass Ford right there.
It would take a little work, however there is very little rust. The same guy who had this had a 67 mustang fastback with 12,000 actual miles on it he bought brand new. It was parked outside also. I bought it along with the Galaxie.
Does it have a knock from the crank or cam?
sweet sound
Naw, it ain't crazy...it's ford....we're talking about the best stuff that was made back in the day!
hope you guys are restoring this treasure...
This will make people first think "what a pile of junk" to see details at close range and they will think "cool car, good work" This is just my idea of what could be done about the car Whatever I think I am glad that it is in loving hands by enthusiasts who take care of her.
impressive, but you took a risk when first spilling gas and then firing up w.o. the aircleaner
not surprising to see it start right up
my truck had been sitting almost as long and we changed the oil fuel and battery and it took a second but if fired up and have been driving it since
The carb needs more than tweeking, it needs to be overhauled with new seals.
what did you do with the car since 2011?
My First car was a 65 Galaxie 500 with a 390.My dad actually had a 65 Galaxie too but he bought his new and it had a 390 PI motor.
What a beauty!
