I'm going to check the throttle body that you are the first to mention,I hope that is the problem. You are right about all the advice on you tube..,very confusing.
If your intake system has a significant vacuum leak that's allowing air to enter at a point DOWNSTREAM from the MAF sensor and UPSTREAM from the Throttle body, this will allow air to enter the intake system that the Computer is unable to measure (because it's after the MAF sensor). The computer will measure excessive Oxygen in the 1st O2 sensor, and respond by increasing the Long Term Fuel Trim in order to correct the Air : Fuel mixture or Stoichiometry error (Lean Condition). Check to see if your Long Term Fuel Trim has been increased to +10% to +20%. The computer will do this in response to the unmeasured air getting into the system through that vacuum leak. The computer will also issue the "Operating Too Lean" P0171 code. If you think about it, this is the exact condition that the P0171 code was designed for but hardly anyone mentions it. Bear in mind that in a Turbocharger system, this includes the whole intake side of the Turbocharger so it's not going to be simple to find.

Could be your PCV valve there’s a circle in the top right of your valve cover it you cover the little hole with ur finger and if your engine tweaks it’s your valve cover because your pcv is built in with it
That thing on the valve cover is not a PCV valve it is a part of the system. The main culprit is in the intake manifold. The PCV is actually a small orange rubber? Diaphragm that either disappears or is “ there “ but partially leaks. Chevy should have fixed that issue but just kept selling intakes and valve covers that just ended buggered up again. @@Zeek800thanks man, I'm finally running into this issue with my Cruze and like this guy I've already cleaned and replaced enough. Just gotta set apart a day for an intake manifold ig
In the 'old days, with a lean condition, you would have to adjust the carburetor. Does the "lean condition" you dealt with the same as the lean condition we used to deal with? Also, the throttle body opening kind of looks like the mouth of a carburetor. If that is the case, can you also spray carburetor cleaner in there?
Carlos in my experience sometimes its not fuel related at all , I've seen faulty sensors be responsible for reporting a lean condition but there was not a lean condition, this is where a good diagnosis is in order.
Just subscribed. I had the code too but the engine light went out. It's a Astra 1.6 2006 model. Been bitter cold and not been driving car that much. Went to start it and crank no start. I knew the battery was ok. But eventually had to charge the battery with trying to start anyway I took the air intake pipe off and cleaned MAF sensor took the pipe off and did the same with the throttle
Ever figure it out? My very first guess would be to check the PCV hose. That will not only absolutely guarantee a P0171 code as well as fuel trim problems, but also can interfere with oil flow to and from the turbo. May want to also check the PCV valve itself like shown in the video. If turbo pressure is delivered into the crankcase from the turbo (in lieu of bad hose/valves on the hose) then it will damage the diaphragm of the PCV valve itself. A lot of people complain about bad PCV valves on the cruze, so much so that it was even recalled. But the truth is much of the time the PCV valve wasn't the culprit, but rather terrible hose designs used by GM on many vehicles. Coincidentally, all of these vehicles have this known issue.
Exactly , I have been asked so many times to replace a part because the code mentioned a part they recognize :) Jerry the auto parts stores could never survive without the parts changers out there LOL Take Care Bud.
@@SteveRobReviews I tried explaining this to a girl a month ago. I told her I wanted to diagnose her car and see what was actually wrong rather than just changing out the part. She sounded worried and panicked when she heard diagnose and never got back to me, I don’t blame her because she’s probably heard horror stories of mechanics ripping people off or she’s experienced it.
Hey man I have a 2014 and when I turn on the ac it starts idling bad the rpm gauge drops below 1 and it keeps going up and down sometimes even without it on and when it’s on high it dies any ideas?
What on Earth is a "Snow Brush"? Maybe to hold the gas pedal down one can use a folded-up sun screen that you always have in your car to keep the interior cool so you don't burn your hands on the steering wheel when you get in the car. 🤔
can a upstream oxygen sensor cause the car to stall? Im having this issue but i already cleaned the throttle body. And changed the mad sensor. Changed the vacuum hose that goes from turbo to intake manifold.
@@SteveRobReviews would an oxygen sensor be one ? I have a small scan tool that shows live data for sensors. The upstream one stays under 0.200 and regulates. Up and down Starts at 1.025 or something like that. Then upstream drops rapidly to under .200
@@SteveRobReviews yea same Here, I’m Getting p0171. System too lean. On a chevy cruz. I already changed maf sensor, cleaned throttle body, changed vacuum hose from turbo to intake manifold. @@SteveRobReviews thanks. I'll try to get it out of them or pinpoint it myself now it is narrowed down. Any idea if those actuators are diy-able. They said it wasn't an easy job cause of the location. But who knows.
@pnnorton taking an intake off is not too bad of a job but getting to the intake bolts can be a challenge plus you need a torque wrench to tighten up. If your not real handy I'd let a tech do it.
What could be the cause of a P0171 on a 2016 Jeep Patriot Latitude 2.0 we just replaced the MAP sensor but the vehicle still has a rough idle and the rpms run high while driving on the freeway approximately 65-70 mph the rpms are jumping up to 2200-2700 rpms. What could cause that? My husband already checked for vacuum leaks and says he can't find any obvious leaks. We just replaced the map sensor thinking that would fix it but it didn't so I'm thinking it could possibly be a bad Throttle Body w/Actuator IAC Idle Air Control or a TPS Position Sensor or even possibly a upstream 02 sensor. If anyone else can give me some advice on what I should fix next I would greatly appreciate it thank you!
Rhonda you definitely need a scan tool to look at codes and live data. It's best to test and not guess as I could think of $500 in possible parts so it's back to looking at data . Your lean code could be many things so start off with fixing that code first.
Ive done both of these things that your video shows and the issue hasnt gone away. My friend amhzs the same problem with his 2016 chevy cruze 1.4T limited LT. Ive tested the PCV valve, the purge valve both are good. Hes had the valve cover replaced, the MAF sensor replaced, both O2 sensors replaced, MAP sensor replaced, the plastic hose that runs on top to the turbo replaced, intake manifold replaced... i found this PCV fix kit online which is my last hope and also plan on replacing his timing chain being that the car is over 125k miles and its never been done before. He has a primary code P0171 as well as a few other secondary codes. If this PCV fix kit does not resolve his problem, do you have anymore suggestions?
@SteveRobReviews I checked the fuel pressure and the pressure is reading the correct psi, I plan on replacing the timing chain on the car since it is at 130k miles without being replaced and is louder on the intake side of the engine.
I have not found the issue yet. I have tried just about everything and anything. As of rn the check engine light is off to my knowledge. I used a difference kind of engine oil. I think the viscosity is incorrect for what they recommend.
The PCV system is to blame. That kit, if installed properly should fix the issue if everything else you stated was already replaced. The job takes at least 15 hours but 5hats because the JaB Weld part of the kit needs to properly cure ( 24 hours is even better ) the kit install should take a first timer 2 to 3 hours only because of salvaging the parts from the old system and some of the connectors are hard to pull off.
mas Airflow sensor use MAF Sensor cleaner. For the throttle body use Throttle body cleaner. Don’t spray the Throttle Body cleaner into the throttle body, use the method in this video or spray a micro fibre cloth and us3 your finger GENTLY. Locate where ant sensors or electric throttle plate actuator are are and don’t get any more than a lightly sprayed with cleaner cloth in that area. Do both the MAF and the TB, MAF sensor first, let it dry for 15-30 minutes before reinstalling and while you wait, clean the Throttle Body.
No codes or no generic codes ? If its actually too rich it will throw a code . Does the check engine light work ? Lots of reasons for a engine running rich but I have never seen one that did not turn the check engine light on.
@@SteveRobReviews I have noticed a oil leak under my cat converter not sure if my tubro is leaking. There was oil in the throttle body when I replaced it with the new one better I couldn't get out of my driveway when I pressed the gas pedal. No.check in light on my dash at all my small scan tool doesn't show anything at all . I put converter cleaner in the gas tank I could smell egg smell before and carbon smell up a hill
Just wanted to verify...depressing the gas pedal without having the engine running doesn't make the fuel pump run, does it? Just don't want to do more harm than good to my vehicle if I do this (2014 Cruze LT 1.4T).
Hi Paul Engine off - ignition off does not turn fuel pump on but engine off and just turning the ignition key in the start position does turn on the fuel pump on to prime the system. Depressing the gas pedal will not turn on the fuel pump .
When you push down the gas pedal your really just giving the car more air. The sensors itself work together with the ecu to tell the fuel pump it needs more fuel.

Hi Raul
I guarantee you Paul will provide all the technical, hands on instruction anyone could need for diagnostic.
Just seeing this now Steve! Thanks for the mention my friend.

Coincidentally, all of these vehicles have this known issue.
a lot of people have a scan tool but don't understand the data and purely rely on the code is the part to replace
I'd try the easiest resolve first and clean the throttle body .
Exact issue on a 2015 gonna try this
Do u fix the problem
Great job bud. So did you get Xmas cookies for payment lol. But your right, lot of the time it can be fixed without fancy tools. Cheers
I never charge for working on friends and family members vehicles but I always seem to get a case of beer 😅😅 Thanks much appreciated 👍👍
Thank you going to Paul

What on Earth is a "Snow Brush"? Maybe to hold the gas pedal down one can use a folded-up sun screen that you always have in your car to keep the interior cool so you don't burn your hands on the steering wheel when you get in the car. 🤔
can a upstream oxygen sensor cause the car to stall? Im having this issue but i already cleaned the throttle body. And changed the mad sensor. Changed the vacuum hose that goes from turbo to intake manifold.
There are so many things that can cause a stall . Looking at data always indicates something. You definitely need a scan tool.
@@SteveRobReviews would an oxygen sensor be one ? I have a small scan tool that shows live data for sensors. The upstream one stays under 0.200 and regulates. Up and down Starts at 1.025 or something like that. Then upstream drops rapidly to under .200
@@SteveRobReviews down stream stays at .800 and regulates up there in that range
I haven't seen an O2 sensor cause stalling. If it was out of range, you would have a check engine light on .
@@SteveRobReviews yea same
Here, I’m Getting p0171. System too lean. On a chevy cruz. I already changed maf sensor, cleaned throttle body, changed vacuum hose from turbo to intake manifold. Purge valve doesn’t look like its bad. Spark plugs and inside of exhaust is charcoal black. id assume its running rich
How do you change the throttle body? Because I need to change one help
@marciabaxley1959 Search your particular vehicle and a youtube video should be available.
I got a sonic and have a diagnosis of a vacuum leak at the actuator under manifold. Any idea what part that is?
Nope , actuators are many so the diagnosis should have said what kind of actuator.
Thank you for tips
👍
wait what side is not suppose to suck air the tube or the purge valve itself.
The side with the electrical connector is not the vacuum side but if the valve is stuck open its there you will notice a suction.
Some know how helps, and now we know. :) That would have cost big $$$$ at a dealer, they would have replaced all new.
The dealer does a great job at fixing vehicles so they never come back with the same fault and replacing parts is a great way at doing it LOL
You said no need of scan tool but actually you got the code P0171, it think it was important at first place.
You definitely need a scan tool for most diagnostic repairs but not all as some faults do not display a code. Cheers 👍
What’s the name of that line that’s by the throttle body ?
I'm not sure of the exact name .
cheers mate
Cheers Joe 👍
What was the cause of error P2096?
Lean codes are usually a symptom of a upstream fault. Post catalytic readings from a misfire .
What if a code does not pop up and you get a few seconds of rough idle?
It could be a couple of things, but I'd start at cleaning the throttle body .
@@SteveRobReviews Thank you
Check your spark plugs and coil pack, mine needed replacement at 55k
Shaun there are mechanical failures to bad fuel injector to faulty fuel pressure. I'd look on the fuel delivery side .
@SteveRobReviews I checked the fuel pressure and the pressure is reading the correct psi, I plan on replacing the timing chain on the car since it is at 130k miles without being replaced and is louder on the intake side of the engine.
Did you find the issue? My car has the same issue and my mechanic said it was the 02 sensor but I replaced that already.
Appreciate the tips thanks 🤙
Cheers Emilio 👍
Check petrol cap is tight
Sprayed it with what
Throttle body cleaner .
mas Airflow sensor use MAF Sensor cleaner. Do both the MAF and the TB, MAF sensor first, let it dry for 15-30 minutes before reinstalling and while you wait, clean the Throttle Body.
this must be a 1.8 engine because oil cap is not the same place then my 1.4
Yes your correct.
Steve I could use your help my 1.4 running rich up a hill going threw gass like crazy replaced throttle body already
Oil in the cat is not good. Your definitely looking in the right direction with the turbo.
Just wanted to verify...depressing the gas pedal without having the engine running doesn't make the fuel pump run, does it? Just don't want to do more harm than good to my vehicle if I do this (2014 Cruze LT 1.4T).
Hi Paul
Engine off - ignition off does not turn fuel pump on but engine off and just turning the ignition key in the start position does turn on the fuel pump on to prime the system. Depressing the gas pedal will not turn on the fuel pump .
Sounds good. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.@@SteveRobReviews
@@paulheiting6484 👍
When you push down the gas pedal your really just giving the car more air. The sensors itself work together with the ecu to tell the fuel pump it needs more fuel.
Giving it more air as in controlling the throttle body plate
Too much electronic BS on modern cars need to go back to points and carbs .
@altonkenne579 I lived thru points and condenser and carbs , no thanks 😅
