The fact that you can actually explore some areas of the game on foot makes me so happy. As much as I love SRPGs I wish more games did the shining force style where you explore an RPG world between massive battles

Sometimes they respond in a positive manner, sometimes less so... That makes you not only think but feel for the characters, trying to figure out their psychology and what core value they are most attached to. I have my own values but I try to be a good leader and listen to my people, find common ground, unite and fight in the direction I want to go. But not on my own, followed by all my friends I successfully convinced. Very good review. Kudos ! ;) Here's a new subscriber. Keep up the good work, and don't worry about being too long. I like deep thinking and analysis personally. Can't wait to dive in into that game !
You know what? Massive credit to you SwitchUp for doing this entire review without comparing it to Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea or even Fire Emblem. It’s so refreshing to see a game reviewed on its own merits, and made me much more willing to go into this game with an open mind instead of being disappointed it doesn’t have a character affinity/relationship system, or it doesn’t have the mechanical depth and numbers of the other games. Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default are two of my favourite games. To see the developers evolve and create a tactical RPG is incredibly exciting. Hey! I love all the games you mentioned and own a 3DS with Bravely Default but I’ve had a hard time getting into the game after trying it a few times. I still don’t understand the story or combat. Any tips for getting into it?
@@stevecosmolove1045 The story is difficult to comment on without spoiling - but it’s one of those ones that’s enjoyed more retrospectively once you’ve finished it when everything starts making sense. The combat is more simple to discuss because it EASILY gets more exponentially fun as you unlock more jobs. The fun in the combat in Bravely Default constantly goes up as you learn how to start breaking the game with insane party combos. Long story short: perseverance is vital to enjoy Bravely Default, but more so in the first two games. If you want an easier experience to get into, try Bravely Default 2 on the Switch - it’s a lot more friendly and just as fun!

I've been absolutely hyped for this for a long time and I'm already into Chapter 6 (I have never thanked the higher powers more for living in a Far-East time zone). I totally understand what you said, Mark, about how many valuable small details in there are hard to articulate and need to be actually experienced to see how well they come together as a package to enhance the entire experience. Great video, and I feel even more justified in my prior hype by your glowing review! The only reason I saw this video was up was that I had to put down my Switch to charge it. What a great game so far.
@@krausewitz6786 Yes in the sense that there's still a lot of story over combat, but in chapter 5 they finish laying the foundations and the plot kicks into high gear and I was so engrossed I barely noticed its length. But Mark is accurate in the review summary, it *is* pretty long winded
I'm just posting to say that if you are a fan of Turn-based strategy, this is an absolute must buy. Seriously, I am only just past the 2nd battle and it is just phenomenal in every way. Hard mode is...well, hard, but the important thing is it's fair. It took me 3 tries to win and it's because I wasn't using my units to their full advantage or taking note of battle formation. Once I did that, I won, narrowly, but man was it satisfying. The story is next level in regards to how personable it is, and the plot is believable in every way. A little too much so, but in a good way. Cheers!

You had me at "Akira Senju", FMAB is my favorite anime ever and the score here clearly has the same vibe. I had lost all hope that Square would make another "tactics" game and now we have it. Between this and the Front Mission remakes coming in summer, AND advance wars remake, this is a good year to be a tactics fan.

@@napalmsf Battle system is quite different. if you prefer Tactical RPG like Fire Emblem, Triangle Strategy will suit you better. Octopath Traveler is more traditional JRPG like Final Fantasy VI.
@@권용대-b5v yea they are different styles of RPGs but they are very reminiscent of eachother in terms of overall art style and if someone is a big fan of JRPGs like Octopath Traveler than and they find this intriguing they will probably enjoy SRPGs like this just as enjoyable. For me I only was interested in Turn based JRPGs until I played Fire Emlem and Shining Force 3, now I love Strategy RPGs. I also find this game very similar to Octopath Traveler in terms of artistic style.

What a great Review! Did not want to listen to it before finishing the game by myself - yes I am one of those Asano fans who just need to buy this games. After 2 3DS Bravely Games and Octopath I am just addicted... Your review is just so to the point with everything you analyse and explain and I just have to say that you did a gain an incredible work!
When they first announced this game, I was so excited. I sort of forgot about it for a while until the first demo was released. I tried it and I wasn’t really pulled in. Then I forgot about it again until the next demo. I tried it again and it really changed my mind about it. Maybe I am finally in the mood for a big jrpg. But I can’t wait to pick this game up and play it now. Great review fellas. You always seem to review the games that I am very curious about. 😎
I'm in a game slump, but I'm glad I picked this one up. I'm about 4 to 5 hours in, and with some of the early story stuff, I was a bit worried at first because it seemed there wasn't enough action. I hung in there because the combat is just so addictive like other tactics games. I can't wait to play more

It kinda does, ya know? Without spoiling things, the 2nd battle is extremely reminiscent of the mock battle during 3 House's Prologue, but with MORE fleshed out story if you can believe it. The story is downright excellent in Tri Strat, so far.
I’ve so been looking forward to this review! I already had the game pre-ordered so I’m glad to hear how great it is. I’m especially excited for the choices system. I loved the branching storylines of Three Houses and I’m interested to see how this game will do different branching paths based on your choices.
The graph looked like radiant historia. I loved that game ley you see all possible outcomes of a decision on one playthrough. Will keep this one on my radar. Excellent review!
As someone who prioritizes story above anything else your review has me insanely hyped! I pre-ordered the game after I finished the demo and my only concern was that the story would not branch enough or that our choices would have very little consequences. If I read your subtle hints correctly it seems like we'll have an adult war-story with tough decisions to make. I can't wait guys! 6 more hours until I can fire up the game!
@@alexterieur8813 gameplay is by far the most important aspect of a game. you can give 10/10s to weaker story games. however, i don't think that applies here where story is emphasized. if the story is bad in a game like this, it will surely affect the score.
@@crobeastness most game have a semblance of story and if you put something in your game it's safe to criticize it. If you put something subpar in your videogame then its overall value is diminished.
@@alexterieur8813 Mario games intentionally contain minimal story so it wouldn't in any way be a focus. No ine has ever criticized a Mario game's story before unless they are praising the the story book time stuff on Mario Galaxy.
@@crobeastness yeah but the vast majority of games that contains a story spends more time on its story than what mario does. Mario is also a game aimed mostly at children/families so it makes sense for it to feature very minimalistic storyline. In the case of Shin Megami Tensei 5, the gameplay is amazing but the story is very mid, even though the game has significantly more story than a mariogame. Unless its super minimalist such as the latter, a bad story cannot make for a 10/10 game.
This one isn't for me really, but I always like games with different skill trees, or games where the ending hinges on your decisions. That adds some replayability for me. Going through again and trying out a different build or getting a different ending.
Love this approach. I have purposely dodged any info on the development of this game because I wanted to be surprised. Oh boy I’m glad I did. This reminded me of war of the lion with fire emblem. Deep story and strategic combat. This review is what I was waiting for. Love both of your opinions when it comes to what I buy next. My wallet isn’t a fan of you two but hey… can’t make everyone happy😉
Amazing what a name can inspire or discourage, isn't it? I was fairly certain that based on the developers/publishers involved, and how much it reminded me of FF:Tactics, that it was going to be a cut above, regardless. Lo and Behold!

I love tactical rpgs and this is one of my most anticipated games of the year. When playing the prologue demo I spent almost 5 hours in the demo but only like 45 minutes of that was combat the rest was mostly dialogue. Is the balance between combat and dialogue better as the game progresses?
In chapter 9 now, thr formula of the game is story>exploration>voting>battle , so yeah more dialogue less battle. Usually i hate game with too many dialogue but somehow i love this and so far havent skip any story

I've been watching this game in development with so much anticipation. Stoked that it looks to be the game we've all been wishing for since 1997.
Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis, FF Tactics Advance 1 and 2 are all great games even surpassing the OG FF Tactics in some ways.

Just picked this one up on clearance for 40$ (Canadian), after wanting it since first viewing this review a year ago! Sometimes, patience pays off.

I’ve recently finished Octopath Traveler and it was a very good game with incredible graphics/music. Triangle Strategy is a must buy to me!

When they first announced this game, I was so excited. I sort of forgot about it for a while until the first demo was released. I tried it and I wasn’t really pulled in. Then I forgot about it again until the next demo. I tried it again and it really changed my mind about it. Maybe I am finally in the mood for a big jrpg. But I can’t wait to pick this game up and play it now. Great review fellas. You always seem to review the games that I am very curious about. 😎
Same happened to me. First demo was meh. Second demo (the full prologue) was awesome. Sealed the deal for me

I'm in a game slump, but I'm glad I picked this one up. I'm about 4 to 5 hours in, and with some of the early story stuff, I was a bit worried at first because it seemed there wasn't enough action. I hung in there because the combat is just so addictive like other tactics games. I can't wait to play more

It kinda does, ya know? Without spoiling things, the 2nd battle is extremely reminiscent of the mock battle during 3 House's Prologue, but with MORE fleshed out story if you can believe it. The story is downright excellent in Tri Strat, so far.

I’ve so been looking forward to this review! I already had the game pre-ordered so I’m glad to hear how great it is. I’m especially excited for the choices system. I loved the branching storylines of Three Houses and I’m interested to see how this game will do different branching paths based on your choices.
I dont use my Switch a ton so I downloaded the demo and about 1 hour in I knew I was definitely buying it
The graph looked like radiant historia. I loved that game ley you see all possible outcomes of a decision on one playthrough. Will keep this one on my radar. Excellent review!

As someone who prioritizes story above anything else your review has me insanely hyped!
I pre-ordered the game after I finished the demo and my only concern was that the story would not branch enough or that our choices would have very little consequences.
If I read your subtle hints correctly it seems like we'll have an adult war-story with tough decisions to make.
I can't wait guys! 6 more hours until I can fire up the game!

@@alexterieur8813 gameplay is by far the most important aspect of a game. you can give 10/10s to weaker story games. however, i don't think that applies here where story is emphasized. if the story is bad in a game like this, it will surely affect the score.
@@crobeastness most game have a semblance of story and if you put something in your game it's safe to criticize it. If you put something subpar in your videogame then its overall value is diminished.
@@alexterieur8813 Mario games intentionally contain minimal story so it wouldn't in any way be a focus. No ine has ever criticized a Mario game's story before unless they are praising the the story book time stuff on Mario Galaxy.
@@crobeastness yeah but the vast majority of games that contains a story spends more time on its story than what mario does. Mario is also a game aimed mostly at children/families so it makes sense for it to feature very minimalistic storyline. In the case of Shin Megami Tensei 5, the gameplay is amazing but the story is very mid, even though the game has significantly more story than a mariogame. Unless its super minimalist such as the latter, a bad story cannot make for a 10/10 game.

This one isn't for me really, but I always like games with different skill trees, or games where the ending hinges on your decisions. That adds some replayability for me. Going through again and trying out a different build or getting a different ending.
My Tactician's Edition is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait!

This reminded me of war of the lion with fire emblem. Deep story and strategic combat. This review is what I was waiting for. Love both of your opinions when it comes to what I buy next. My wallet isn’t a fan of you two but hey… can’t make everyone happy😉

I've waited more than 20 years for a final fantasy tactics sequel (spiritual in this case) and here we are.
I already knew this would be a banger. Glad to confirm it's a great game! It's on the list after I finish Elden Ring and Pokemon Legends

Final Fantasy Tactics was one the most influential games for me. I can't wait to play something like it. We've been waiting such a long time
I love tactical rpgs and this is one of my most anticipated games of the year. When playing the prologue demo I spent almost 5 hours in the demo but only like 45 minutes of that was combat the rest was mostly dialogue. Is the balance between combat and dialogue better as the game progresses?

What ive seen still the same. 2hours played and 20min were battles
In chapter 9 now, thr formula of the game is story>exploration>voting>battle , so yeah more dialogue less battle. Usually i hate game with too many dialogue but somehow i love this and so far havent skip any story
Loved the demo and looking forward to playing the full release whenever I can get to it lol. Been a while since FF Tactics days
