Well, there are two styles of famicom to NES adapters on the market. The ones that are shaped like a cartridge like this one that can't handle the larger carts but they look hella cool with the cart facing the front, Then there are the ones that have a ribbon and they work with more carts but the carts face the back. I have a total of three FC to NES adapters and two NES to FC adapters since I am into Famicom games and systems. But get one that works for you.
I start with industrial rubbing alcohol, and a Q-tip, first for a wet pass, then a dry pass then I would use an rubber eraser. Also places like TOTL could help you open up cart to clean them if you don't have a security bit

Sweet Famicom adaptor. I just have one of those cheapo bare board types, but it works 😝very nice console setup.
