I have read and reread the entire series so many times. I always find something new and exciting, even though I have read them cover to cover. My biggest sadness is that the series ended. I wanted to follow Ayla and Jondalar, to see what happened with Jonayla and the rest of the people. You become so engrossed in the writing that you can almost visualize the characters and what their lives must have been like. I wish there was another book or two, but I am so grateful to Mrs. Auel for giving us the 6 in the series. Incredibly written.
I read this series in 2010-2011I . I absolutely loved it. I have just finished Clan of the Cave Bear. again and will read the entire series again now July 2024
I first read The Clan of the Cave Bear when I was in HS in the early 90’s and have re-read the entire series nearly every year since! I have missed reading it the last 5years due to life changes, but I just pulled out the first book today to re-read it again. 😊
Each book leaves you wanting more. The dreams of her sons meeting in the future. There is so much. It always leaves you wanting more. I know it takes a lot of research about an area to write accurately but the story line is so much prepared it just waits and breathes in its essence
I adore her, I would die if I ever got to meet her & talk to her! It's funny when people talk about waiting months or a year or two for a book, I always tell them I once waited a decade, twice! She really solidified my love for any & all things Pleistocene!
thank you Jean Auel you made my reading experience wonderful I will treasure these books and read them again .. i would love to see one more , you are a beautiful person , these books have changed me for the better again thank you..
Jean M Auel has written the most intricately beautiful, brave, wonderful, interestingly educational, just awesome series, stories & my fella showed me her books & they've become a strong link within our relationship. Ayla & all she's been through & Jondalars issues with who she is yet loves her any way & we just tslk about life & it all compares to Earths Children very BEAUTIFUL.
Thank You for this wonderful series Jean. Ive loved it since it came out. I was 18 and was traveling Europe at the time Switzerland Germany and Austria i could fancy myself in their shoe,s. They made a huge impression on this then young lady. The information about everything was exceptional. A must read for all 😊❤🎉🇨🇦😊
I absolutely love this series and read all 6 books every 3-4 years, each book in one month for a total of 6 months, i am due to reading them again for the 5th time lol :) I do wish all 6 were made into a movie
Luna Wolf As far as I know... The Clan of the Cave Bear The Valley of Horses The Mammoth Hunters The Plains of Passage The Shelters of Stone The Land of Painted Caves
Luna Wolf I've also read all six numerous times, have lost count. love them! even after all these years I still find the odd thing that I didn't notice before...exciting when that happens, and amazing!
I Love the lady who narrated she had multiple voices to blend and all the characters but I've listened to it for two times and I'm sure there will be many more
I was very happy indeed to find this interview with Ms Auel since I got hooked on this series as well and am ecstatic that there is one more book to read! Her stories are the kind I like to devour cover to cover they are that compelling to me. By the way, the word "Neandertal" comes from both Greek and German: "Ne" is a contraction of the German "Neu," (pronounced "Noy" when not shortened) and meaning "New;" "Ander is from the Greek "Andros" meaning "Man;" and "Thal" or "Tal" (the 'h' is silent) is German for "Valley," hence it translates to "New Man Valley" where the first remains were discovered in the 1800s. This created a sensation, especially since it happened when Charles Darwin was writing about the evolution of species, which now included us! Also, I am using a lady friend's email account to write this since I was careless enough to lose my own a few months ago and am finding it quite a nuisance to recover without losing years' worth of messages!
Mom and I had a great conversation about the ancient days. She has the entire series and loaned to me The Land of Painted Caves. So many pages. I've got to get through this as efficiently as possible.
I've been reading and rereading this series since 1984 or so. It is my favorite book series of all time. I would love to learn how to do the things Ayla can do.
There was a series being produced by Ron Howard that had a lot of potential. At least four seasons with each season being a book. Unfortunately, the lifetime network and fox couldn't come to an agreement and the project got canned.
@@MsPixibelle yes theres a movie adaption for the first book. I didn't get the see the English version, but surprisingly, even without having read the books at the time, it was pretty easy to understand what was going on for the most part. It does change the story up though, and without really knowing what's being said, you do miss a lot of info from the books.
I have read these books and own each one I fell that the last book feels unfinished what about he reacuring dreams Ayla had about two of her sons meeting
I love these books, especially the first three of them! So powerfull. The movie was a great dissapointment. I still hope that they make a complete series of these books. It has to be done! And it has to be possible with todays' technology.
I agree! The movie version from years ago was absolute garbage! They chose Daryl Hannah simply because she was a tall blonde ... but I have since despised her for her incredibly bad acting and for all involved whom participated in desecrating such an incredible story! I also hope to see this Earth's Children Series continued in print (by Jean I mean, not some other! ) Although I hope as well to see this Series made into movies! ... but only if they are treated with the utmost respect!
I think a lot of people are missing the gem of Land of the Painted Caves. I, personally, loved it. It was deep, meditative, thoughtful. The theme of all the books, as others have mentioned, contains a spiritual guide, of sorts. One must enter into the beauty of this final book with the correct mindset, or you miss the depth. It reminds me of the vision quests - it can't be taken lightly. You can't expect it to be one way, or how you imagined. If anything, we've learned from Ayla's story that life isn't always seemingly fair and all one can do is embrace the challenges, grow from them, gain wisdom, and help others with what one's learned. This last book is no different when approached correctly. People are dismayed as they knew it was the last and wanted things tidily wrapped up for their own curiosity. When did Auel EVER tidily wrap things up? Ayla is constantly tested by her totem, by the Great Mother. We are shocked at Jondalar's 'cheating' on Ayla (though monogamy was not cultural), and balk that he would never do that to her. How many of you have been betrayed by a supposed 'true love' that you thought would never EVER do you wrong? It happens all too often. I thought this final book was Auel's finest, in a sense, for the layers of vision it contains, for the meditative writing style, for the story challenging US, disappointing US with the love scenario, so we can learn, grow, understand. This is the material world. Very few things are ever wrapped up perfectly in a nice bow. The only one we can ever TRULY rely on, is Spirit. If we approach challenges with the right attitude, that faith, that reliance, will help to mend what's broken in ourselves, and in our relationships, if both parties are willing. I am saddened that Auel had to face so many disappointed fan reviews, after such a beautiful work of art. I urge everyone who appreciated the depth of the other books to read this one again, without expectation, without judgement, and enter into it with the vision quest mindset - you'll get so much more out of it. It's truly metaphysical. Ayla ain't no Disney princess, and her story is no happy ending cartoon. Challenges will always be there. Embrace it, grow, self realize, or be unhappy. Another fine message of the series. Well done, Jean Auel. I hope one of your people can read this to you one day, if by chance someone you know falls upon it. Thank you for your astounding effort and teaching us how to live with integrity and wisdom. Thank you.
I started reading this and I dunno, maybe you should put a spoiler warning or something cuz I saw the bit about Jondalar's "indiscretion" and wanted to gouge my eyes out. I still haven't gotten to that part 😅😭
Spoiler!!! Personally, I agree about how it's not really shocking he slept with someone else in a polyamorous society. It really wasnt a shock. What was a shock was who it was with, and the fact is was so secretive. To me, that's where it was wrong of him. She even says so (Ayla) in the books. Had it been any other women, she wouldve understood. She wouldnt have liked it, but she wouldve understood. For me, he was in the wrong because he knew the person he chose would hurt her, and instead of picking another "petal" he chose her, and chose to keep it a secret, though not very well. It's the fact that he lied by keeping secrets which is also a betrayal of her trust. You cant have secrets like that in a relationship, whether monogamous or polyamorous, and hope trust remains. That's where he was in the wrong, in my opinion. It went past sleeping with another girl to me.
Half this book was cave descriptions and a quarter of it was rehashing what happened in the previous books. There are back story errors. It is not a well written or engaging book. Aylas “revelation” from the mother about how life is started? She figured this out in book one. Blah.
I thought this last book was awful. I got thru about 120 pages before i couldn't go on. It was like a long list of 3 syllable names. She should have stopped at 4.
I was very disappointed about how the book was written. What happened to the two sons? what of the visions? What about the Clan? I didn't need to read about 450 pages of caves. I wanted to know where she came form that someone recognized her. That she talks to the Clan again that they needed her knowledge. It was not worth the money I spent for this book. I was so disappointed I wish I had never read this book, it hurt the series it did not help it in any way.
I couldn’t get through even half of Land I’d Painted Caves. To me it was an extremely poor final book to an extremely great series. All LoPC did was rehash a bunch of plot points from the previous five books, and it felt like it included more description than plot.
In some way I agree, I loved the series so much however I couldn’t just get one thing, 4 years go by in one sentence? (In where her daughter grows from being 4 to 8 in on paragraph.) like did nothing happen in 4 years?!
I loved all the rest of the series, and didn't hate Land of Painted Caves, but you're right. It reminded me of the later seasons of "Golden Girls", and their clip shows. It didn't diminish the rest of the series, but really didn't add much to it either. Didn't quite get the closure i wanted, but still, much respect to Auel for the incredible amount of work she did!
I was disappointed with this book I was really hoping that it would keep up with the rest of the books but it sadly didnt even though i am likely to read it again with the first 5 books i would read about a quarter or more in a day while the last one i got bored after a few pages and stopped reading for about an hour or so before starting again
Glad I wasn’t the only one. I tried reading this thru about 7 times. Each time I got bored. The last time I was skimming the pages to get thru yet another description of another cave, the last chapter was the only interesting part. I loved and still reread this story but skip the last book now completely
I loved this series but this book was a disaster. Boring, repetitive, characters acting out of character and didn’t resolve questions raised in previous books.
Thank you! I can’t believe this is not an uproar. The last 2 books were such a dip in writing and storytelling, they were just filler of previously exhausted soap opera elements between the two main characters. I loved up to the 4th book, the last 2 I hated.
