I found Clan of the Cave Bear at my school library when I was 14 - it was the first book I ever really got invested in. I still remember bursting into tears at the last page with Durc crying out
I started reading this book series when I was 11 years old. They were my escape from a severely abusive childhood. The fact that they are so historically accurate is mind blowing too. Well done Jean M Auel. Love from a recovering heroin addict/alcoholic from Scotland (clean over five years) ❤️🏴
In the loneliness of my childhood and early adolescence these books kept me company. I loved the idea of a strong feminine character built after lots of years of loneliness and heart break. Thank you very much Miss Auel for sharing Ayla with us!
what a lovely lady and what a pleasure to read all her books. My history teacher told us about that time and I went to Montignac and Lascaux and saw all those beautifull art of the Earthchildren. And reading her books brings back those lovely memeories. Thank you mrs Auel!!!!
Sorry a little late to the game, I'll catch up. Wonderful conversation, thank you for sharing it. M. Auel I am pleased to meet you, I have enjoyed your books deeply so far.
The storytelling is amazingly satisfying with the ups and downs and suspense and release. The books are riviting and I can't turn the pages fast enough. I find it hard to believe people lived 30,000 years ago when only 300-1,000 years ago the mamutoi reminds me of American Indians, obviously mixed with Viking. I can't stop reading, the sexy parts are tastefull and actually impart a sense of realilty and balance to the harsh survival aspects. Brilliant storytelling in my opinion.
@@edelgyn2699 it's not history, it's only fiction & I think she is smart, clever enough to write a series of books to let our imagination follow characters she created with descriptions/details sprinkled in to weave a story... isn't that what many of us enjoy about fictional books?
I loved Auel's creative liberty in regards to the Neanderthals using sign language nuanced with simple vocalizations as a primary means of communication. It adds such exotic depths to the story
Bravo.❤.
I do agree though that their extinction was complex. Part conflict, part disease, part out- competition, part climate, etc. They also were a cold adapted species. There is no way a neandertjal imo could live today in africa, india, south america or any other tropical region.
Has anybody put together a recipe book of sorts, compiled from the Earth's Children book series? I've always thought it'd be great to have, if the uses of herbs and whatnots are realistic, or actual. (Otherwise it'd be a pointless gemic.)
Reading all of the comments from people saying they read these books as a child makes me wish I would've read them. I was reading romance novels in highschool 😂.
I am amazed by the comments here, that children were reading her books! In general, they are really interesting, but the 'sexy' parts are a bit OTT for young children. My only complaint about the series is all the repetition- start at Clan of the Cave Bear, and follow the sequence- no need to repeat so much information. I skip so many pages as I go along.
The books were very enjoyable to read and rich in detail, but I didn't think they were very realistic. They portrayed life in the stone age as being much easier than it probably was. I'm sure food was far more scarce, and the tasty recipes she describes were not likely a priority, when daily survival was the main goal and hunger during the winter months was probably routine. Also the interior decorating she describes seems more like a modern concept, I doubt if there was any Flintstones cavekeeping going on. Another thing was the sex. Were the Cromagnon men (Jondalar), really so skilled in female pleasure? I highly doubt it. The sensitive man is a modern concept. And the animal husbandry. Ayla singlehandedly being responsible for the domestication o dogs and horses? Please don't misunderstand, I really, really enjoyed reading these books, but they should not be taken as in any way as an accurate picture of life in the stone age.
Did Jean know about Yeshua's travels to Tibet, where he studied buddhism! As the Buddhists there, called Yeshua/Jesus - Issa!. Which is the name of the main character in 'Clan of the Cave bear!!! Very interesting! It could be that this author, is very well read!! May be not, a coincidence!!!🤔
They were fiction... She's excellent at telling tales, it's just her cultural assumptions were marked by being a white American woman who didn't have an academic background in the time period that her tales were set.
@@savannahfecht2148 I remember her interpretations as being 'cringe' particularly her assumption that Neanderthals were patriarchal. I don't see mansplaining here, I see him as regurgitating (basic) recent findings in order to establish what academics think.

I started with the Valley of Horses at 9 yrs old in 1984, realised it wasn't the start and went back. This has been my favourite series my whole life!
Same here. !!
Exactly the same here too! Read Valley first, saw there were more, and been my favorite series. Great minds… 😉😃
Woh! 9 years old? Very advanced...
Absolutely, I’m currently rereading it currently. I first read it over 20 years ago.

Thank you for such a lovely comment! We're pleased you enjoyed the interview with Jean M Auel and Chris Stringer.
My mother in law introduced me to this series. I started reading them in 2021. I’m currently on book 3.
Fascinating read for sure.
I enjoyed this conversation very much. I liked that you asked each other questions.
When you read these books Ayla will feel like a best friend...I am always sad at the end of the books...I miss her :-(
I admire this book 📕 for survival skills in natural environment 💕❤️💗💕🇵🇭🙏🏽
I read a lot of her books when I was a kid. She is great.
I'm sorry for you... YOU read a lot more porn than a child ever should... It a pedofile book....
I love this book series and reread it regularly ❤
me too..just finished all but the valley of the horses because I can't find one in the second hand shops.
Her book Clan of the Cave Bear. She surmised that homo sapiens and Neanderthals mated long before DNA evidenced it to be true. Very smart lady
Alas she got many other things wrong, not so smart!

I want there to be a 7th book soooo bad. I want to see aylas girl grow up and if she has another child 😍
I agree with Auel to end the series. It ran out of steam and the earlier books are still the best
Thanks JMA
Amazing books

Manco82, do you mean the movie?
Creb had supernatural abilties? It was disturbing for me near the end of book 1 ....
Bueno, hay que tener en cuenta que el libro tiene muchos datos reales, pero la historia en sí es ficción, así que algún detalle cómo ese no es raro xd

I read it as a child. Definitely not for kids those parts. Good thing my parents didn't read😅
simple,,, thank you..

That's why they are fiction.

To lendo o livro
in spanish please
Let me see the person speaking not the reaction shot.
I think Neanderthals are still in some of our dna. Shoot dated one in high school 🤣
Living neanderthal? Wow!!!!!
Shelters of stone and Land of painted caves could have been great but were really a great failure
And I still don't know how to pronounce her name.
Blueskywatcher all
Ms. Ball.
The first 4 books were great. Buy 5 and 6 in the series were terrible and I think she wrote just for 💰💰💶💶
