Gortash became criminally underwritten at the end. There's so much potential for his character because in many ways he is similar to the player, not truely evil just trying to navigate his way up the power ladder and making many regrettable choices that he's unable to reverse or get rid of their consequences.
I think there was cut content involving him and a potential quest with Bane, I am not sure but speak with the dead on him after you kill him reveals that Bane wants to form an alliance and have you be his chosen similarly to the Bhaal dark urge quest.
Hilarious that Gortash, the smuggest villain of them all, yet the only one who will actually honor his agreement with you, just full-on goes down without a fight, because he was never a real threat to the true villain. XD
This route is seriously lacking but I'm sure it was hard to get Jason Isaacs in the booth, the man's busy. Just wish they were able to do more with him.
That’s the issue with casting famous actors, sure it might help to promote your product but if you want to expand their character more it can be quite difficult to get the actor back in there, ME3 had the same issue with Miranda, where her role got severely cut due to the actress being busy

I do wish the post game had a bit more where you could chat with your companions at camp one last time before departing. In act 1/2 almost any random person you talked to would have something to say even if it didnt lead to a quest where as we dont get to even hear one liners from our companions post game.
Yeah when Gale started talking about having a celebration at the end I was hoping for one last camp party like act 1 end where you can go around and talk to everyone. Hopefully Larian ends up adding an epilogue
At first I was like "Yeah he gonna make me kill Orin and betray me afterwards even if the narrator and emperor says he speaks genuine." But him not betraying me and actually holding his word was refreshing so I sticked with him. Great character with an unfitting End. He might be not the strongest dude but he sure as sh*t had some brains.
I actually found his purported genius to be somewhat lackluster once it's revealed the entire Absolute plot is someone else's design (IYKYK) and that he was ultimately a tagalong. Smug, yes, but he was unable to control Orin and even Ketheric was blatantly disrespectful to him. For a would-be leader, he was deeply lacking in charisma in meaningful ways.
The fucking frustration... I went out of my way to go after Orin first just to try to save him and within seconds of getting there just boom dead. Dudes definitely a little prick but his back story is so sad I wanted him to survive so bad. What bs.

I will be fine with Gortash dying no matter whats, but I would prefer a better end for him, one with him putting a little more of a fight or even trying to call upon Bane’s help instead of just standing there waiting for the killing shot
It's so disappointing... is there even a reason to do an evil playthrough if you can't side with the badass villains?? Why can you have ascended Astarion, Dark justiciar Shadowheart and not Orin/Gortash by your side...
If you are doing a dark urge run you can't have Orin as an ally, since both DU and her in an evil run want to be Bhaals chosen and only one can be and the other must die. Though if you did have Gortash he would most likely betray you once the brain is under control.
Dude do you realize what it means to fullfill Bhaal’s plan? You don’t side with anyone. Evil play especially on dark urge is literally meant to be alone and to end by you wiping every living being. You literally misunderstand the whole concept of it and think of evil ending as good ending but with evil characters only.
@@lightla123 gortash wouldn't imo. on an insight check, you see he fully intends on sharing power with you. he just wants someone competent to depend on. orin and ketheric weren't dependable at all, and karlach was too lowly to truly be 'worthy' of him (plus her brash nature probably rubbed him the wrong way, he has a real thing for 'respect'). i think gortash would have no issue keeping tav around as long as they remain a) helpful and b) respectful.
Orin is a stark raving lunatic who just wants to kill and fight to the death, she was never an option, even in the Dark Urge storyline where it's revealed she is your sister she still tries to kill you and settle things in a duel for the right to rule Faerun, Gortash should have been an option honestly as he was genuinely going to share power with you which is not something you usually get from villains

Brilliant game it's a shame some of the ending routes are lacking. Looking forward to the definitive edition felshing out Act 3 and alternative routes.
I can't believe I actually killed Gortash at his coronation on my first playthrough. Knowing I could've allied him and gotten an easy path to beating the netherbrain would've saved my sanity tenfold, holy shit
I mean, it makes sense. A lot of people complaining about how it was dissapointing, but there were so many signs he was nothing but pathetic. His betrayal of a most loyal friend, the fact that the watchers are controlled by the Brain and not him, that he virtually has no real physical powers just inventions and bodies. And he did not have the protection of the prism/emperor. We would've died as well were it not for that.
Gortash should not have suffered such a bad anticlimactic sendoff at least put in a double cross at the end where he takes the crown and dominates everyone as technically he did not break his oath after all you will be unharmed and will rule beside him, as a loyal puppet as there can only ever be one leader after all. And it would be most inconvenient if you have any ideas or any notion that commands are up for useless discussion.
There is no way Gortash could have ever controlled all three Netherstones with just the backing of Bane. And even then the plot explicitely tells you that at this point the Brain is too powerful to be subjugated by anyone using the stones unless they are Illithid. The Gortash wins ending just makes no sense with the actual plot.
Woah woah woah, I thought it was impossible to avoid the fight with Gortash when you first come to him with orins stone. On my dark urge play though I wanted to work with him, he seemed the most pragmatic out of the bunch and a evil my RP character would align with. Still kinda disappointed he wouldn’t even be in the final battle, would of been nice considering a lot of players wouldn’t go down this route.
@@niydfass1060 Can’t actually recall, I remember savescumming before n trying a few, i though the one where I offered to give the stones would of been the route.

They could have, at the very least made it the dice roll for the ‘domination’ of the brain would be easier when you are allied with Gortash, allowing you to more easily get the ‘Against All Odds’ perk. Like with all the companions in this game who will straight up refuse to travel with evil characters (Wyll, Karlach, Jaheria, Halsin, Minsc, the list goes on!), having Gortash as an evil companion would have been lovely, but a dice roll advantage was the LEAST they could have done!)
The netherbrain try delaying their attempt to control by having a chit chat and Gortash were caught by the bait. That netherbrain was lying since he/she cannot resist the player command later 🤔

There should have been a way to replace Kheteric as chosen of Myrkul and have a successful dead 3 ending too. Come on... Bhaal is literally the most brain dead of the 3 and turns out we were the chosen of that piece of work.
I suspect the rute to take Ketheric place was a possibility but got cut, there's a dialouge from the once woman I moonrise that hinted she might be a companion

Died like a fart. So lame. Literally *boop* dead. WELP bane must be so embaressed. I can see him facepalming so hard LMAO if you're Durge, I can also see Bhaal laughing his ass off at Bane.
He looks more like Cyric's Chosen than Bane's. Seriously, the pathetic, cowardly doll is the chosen one of the eternal tyrant and lord of terror? Bane's lawful evil is heavily underrated in games. Bane is supposed to be Sauron D&D. He is the most powerful of the dark three. He was the only one to regain his full status as a greater deity. Give me a true Bane Champion someone like Agandaur. Give me the opportunity to play on the side of evil with honor and dignity, not a mindless need to destroy.
@@BlazeIgnitus You can see back to Bhaal and Myrkul's lives, Wizard messed up a bit. In the 3rd and 4th editions, Bane is the greater deity. He not only regained, but also increased his power. He even conquered the goblin pantheon. Very quickly, he became one of the most powerful evil gods. Moreover, his church was stable and united. He did not allow internal conflicts. Whereas Myrkul was a lesser deity and had to serve Kelemvor. Second Sundering Weakened most of the gods and reduced their influence on the world. Again, it's not like he didn't regain his power, but he lost it again because of Ao. He remained in mortal form to have greater influence over mortals. He is now literally Sauron of the forgotten lands, sitting in his tower building an empire.
@teoch5217 Descent into Avernus happens literally just before this game in the calendar of the Forgotten Realms: 1492 DR. It's why the tieflings have been exiled and were scattered around; Zevlor is even a reference to Descent into Avernus as part of Elturel's Hellriders. After the events of Descent into Avernus, he along with the other tieflings of Elturel was banished from the city because of the fear and paranoia the people had after their ordeal in Avernus.
I actually rather enjoyed this interpretation of what a follower of Bane might be like… Yeah, most people would think it’d be a warrior…an armored, hulking figure; or an intimidating commander with a gauntleted black fist. Before details came out, I actually thought Ketheric had been the chosen of Bane. But there HAS been lore that Bane is also cunning & tactical; and that he tempts nobles or those in power with glory & riches in exchange for complete fealty & servitude. So it makes sense that an ambitious politician would secretly be a worshipper of Bane. (shudders) I just realized that this sort of makes Bane the god of corrupt politicians. Suddenly Gortash’s apathy makes total sense. Cyric would be a FANTASTIC antagonist in future D&D games…be a cool way to incorporate Kelemvor & Midnight, too. And Helm. Love Helm. Keeps quiet & gets sh*t done.
Act 3 is considered the weakest for a reason. Good architecture, poor resolutions to many of the plotlines. Most of them end the same way: go into a building, which leads to a tunnel, and beat the enemy at the end of a tunnel. The big exception is the Steel Watch and Iron Throne plotline. That was original and unique... if you don't mind them ripping off Robocop 2. The brain of a dead person(s) controlling a giant metal robot intended for law enforcement.
Honestly act 1 and 2 were so good I forgive them. Act 3 highlight for me was definitely the house of hope. Hopefully they will go back and refine it. Hell I really wouldn't mind paying for a expansion.
I think that is a gross generalization. SteelFoundry/Iron Throne is one aspect, but to get to Orin you need to investigate murders across the city, to do Lae'zel's Orpheus quest you need to go to the House of Hope which is awesome, to deal with Minsc you need to sneak into the bank and also have Jaheira around to make a choice of keeping him around or not. The second auntie Ethel fight is interesting, because you can just stumble on it and be surprised or you can be led there by a characteer from act 1 directly involved with hags. To finish Wyll's quest and get to Ansur you actually need to beat unique trials below Wyrm rock fortress, something a huge amount of players will never see because there are so many conditions. The only two who suffered from hallway and then fight syndrome were Shadowheart and Astarion. It feels like the temple of Shar and Cazador's mansion were kept very short to save time. Karlach of course is famous for having no real companion quest as she is a last minute addition, but her focus is personal drama which is still good.
Does this mean the giant brain (which i just can't take seriously) can actually kill the player outright if they wanted too? If so then she's testing the main character. Seeing if they can outplay them somehow.
@@Maitredebo2 an elder brain isnt a joke. I'm very disappointed, a game that's supposed to be about role-playing forces you into one direction regardless of what you do and who you side with... Why even give us the option to team-up if it's this meaningless?
Because it's meant to reveal just how foolish the absolute cult plan was from the start. The Elder Brains aren't mindless beings. They're cunning and capable of elaborate plots to further their grand design. Gortash's fate was sealed as he served Bane, the tyrant god. How powerful the Elder Brain would become once it became adapted to the Crown's Netherese magic. Gortash's authority would have no place here and serve to be proof that Bane is pathetic compared to the Netherbrain. A bit of irony shown when the Chosen of Tyranny is destroyed by something with far greater authority.
@@joec.1766 That's a pathethic excuse for forcing the player into one end result regardless of what they do. Limted options are limited options. We're FORCED to go with the emperor's plans no matter what. Even though he's proven wrong and incorrect. And then we STILL have to go along with his plans. "The mindflayer way" with no other ay. Hidden behind the illusion of choice which is basically the equivalent of Mass Effect 3 endings. The devs do well with little touches and middle game. But it botches the main story. Largely due to limited screen time with key characters. There is no journey with them. Compare that to how past D&D games have a lot more suspense and getting to know the main threats. BG1 less so, but BG2 and Neverwinter Nights 1 do it quite well. Even BG3 does Raphael well. Yet when it comes to other enemy characters it's a quick "Hi. Bye. I'm a boss for the sake of being here."
What are you doing to boost your HP so high with all characters? The fighters I can understand but mage/cleric? And what die hack are you using? 3 critical successes in a row, odds are so incredibly low without using a cheat.
Emperor saves you. He steps in just in time to save your ass after Gorty gets capped, and from that point on you have his protection after he assimilates Orpheus, so Netherbrain can't pull off any cheap trick on you.
There is only one ending, no matter what you do and the ending is disappointingly short and rushed after so many hours of playing and discovering all the secrets i was genuinely first time disappointed that the end was so insignificant.
I'm sorry, but you are wrong on several levels. First of all there are several endings. You can defeat the Netherbrain or you can dominate it and rule as an Illithid. So that's two completely different outcomes. Secondly how is it not significant? You are stopping the Grand Design (or champion it) and fight an all out battle against a Mindflyer invasion. You can side with the Emperor or Orpheus or do your own thing and then there are many subvariations of those choices as well. Every party member can have different outcomes to their questlines that changes their ending. The only thing it lacks is epilogue slides that tell you what happened after the game ends, but the ending itself was climicatic and important.
BG3 is a game that embodies "the journey not the destination". It really turned into a shit fest the longer it went on. Definitely not comparable to something like Planescape torment which some people have been comparing to the story to. Not in a million years.
Damn, this game made me feel bad for all 3 of the evil baddies... I just met his parents on the way to finsih my last quest before going to fight him... It was not making me feel too nice. Literally the only "bad guy" I could not come to "like" was Cazador. But I guess its because they gave away zero "tragic backstory" about him. In my opinion he is just so "cliché baddy" that its too much. I dont like black and white, pure good or pure evil in stories. Its strange cause I could even feel bad for Orin. Its true she was pure evil, but she was RAISED in that freaking place where we fought her... and was almost killed by her mother. Clearly she still had some emotions otherwise she would not have kept her dead body. She was also easily angered when we tell her that her grandpa ordered her mom to kill her. Usually you need to roll a dice for her to let her captive go, but in that case she becomes so emotionally driven that she forgets the captured person and straight goes to attack you. Orin is just a bit out of place since if she was to be with the Drow she would probably be the favorite of Lolth too. So its not like she doesnt fit into this world. But Cazador is just, meh. I care more about some of the side characters than him, and I feel that its a missed opportunity, just so people dont feel bad when letting Astarion ascend.

He saw Karlach as an ally that he trusted too, remember. But people are a means to an end for a Banite. In the end, he will do what he has to to be at the top. The whole storyline with Karlach explains who Gortash is pretty well: he treats you like a proper ally, until the benefits of sacrificing you surpasses your usefulness. Gortash became criminally underwritten at the end.

I audibly gasped when I saw that in my first playthrough
What bs.
Patch 5 has Larian giving into the fans and allowing Minthara in your group giving me hope they will at least do something with Gortash. Otherwise what a waste of a character that had so much potential good or bad.
@@Pastelgarbage Larian said they were working on endings for evil characters, so maybe Gortash will get his due yet.

You can technically control the brain yourself, seems evil enough

Gortash is a one hell of a character man
Gortash should not have suffered such a bad anticlimactic sendoff at least put in a double cross at the end where he takes the crown and dominates everyone as technically he did not break his oath after all you will be unharmed and will rule beside him, as a loyal puppet as there can only ever be one leader after all. And it would be most inconvenient if you have any ideas or any notion that commands are up for useless discussion.
I actually agree with you. I wouldn't even be pissed at such an ending, it would have made me laugh.
I like the anti-climactic ending for Gortash, it shows how much stronger the Nether Brain is than the former 'main' antagonists

Um... Bane didn't return to full power. As of Descent into Avernus, he remains a quasi-deity, same as Bhaal and Myrkul.
@@BlazeIgnitusthank you, the OP went on a rant there.
I actually rather enjoyed this interpretation of what a follower of Bane might be like…
Yeah, most people would think it’d be a warrior…an armored, hulking figure; or an intimidating commander with a gauntleted black fist.
Yeah. DOS2 did the same kinda thing, but being limited to 3-4 of the origin characters cut back on the bloat.
just because something has been done before doesn't mean it's a rip off
Honestly act 1 and 2 were so good I forgive them.
Karlach of course is famous for having no real companion quest as she is a last minute addition, but her focus is personal drama which is still good.

nope. Oprheus' power protection
The player's party has a plot related protection that prevents instant squidification or death via command, but Gortash is not in the exclusive club.

If you mind read on Cazador as he's dying you find out his previous master was just as abusive to him and he's thankful to be dying, iirc.
@@HortonScoutHD Not only that, but you can find a scroll in his underground lair that details the "lessons" Cazador's master taught to him, which amounted to extended physical and psychological torture. It was a centuries-long cycle of abuse that Astarion is in a position to end.
