In fairness, he gave Jerry Lee Lewis a big break by having him on the show, and digging his performance. It was the Killer's fist time on TV and he played "Whole Lotta Shakin'" and 3:10 electrified the world. I wish I'd been there. Steve got in the spirit of things and flung a big book, or something heavy, along the stage, like a real cool cat. Probably looked a bit daft. But the gig did wonders for Jerry, who always appreciated the break, and in fact called one of his sons Steve Allen Lewis.
Edit: I saw Jerry for the second time in my life, at the ABC cinema in Gloucester, England, in 1973. I hitchiked a hundred or so miles from Devon, bopped onstage with twenty or so others, and shook Jerry's hand at the greatest gig I've ever seen, got him to autograph my jacket, and hitchhiked home.

It was "Bebop-a-Lula" by Gene Vincent. I don't recall Steve doing this song, but I do remember him doing the same with the lyrics to "Dungaree Doll" by Eddie Fisher.
