- Watch how long it takes for the DJI Action 2 to overheat when recording in 4K 120 FPS. The DJI Action 2 is in the news for being a super compact action camera, but also for its overheating issues. I recorded this video to demonstrate to buyers how well the camera performs when recording 4K 120 fps.
This video was shot indoor in a room at 26C° / 78.8F
The recording stopped after 2 Minutes and 50 seconds.
For someone like me who is planing to use the DJI Action 2 on roller coasters and other "thrill attractions" a recording time of less than 3 minutes is unadaptable. Most "thrill experiences" last for 3 to 5 minutes.
Let me know what you think about this DJI Action 2. Is it OK for an action camera to have a recording time from less than 3 minutes? Write your opinion about the DJI Action 2 in the comments below!

Well I only need 1 min or less of 120 4k in slow motion before I fall sleep, so this is plenty and suits me fine, I bet no one films more then than on a regular basis. and editing would take forever.
Thank You
Luidoly
But what about at 4k 30 or 60? I think that's much more in line with what most people would care about (not your use case, but still)
Agreed but here we are talking about marketing BS because the 4K 120 is thier BIG sellingpoint
@@GreenBoxMedia It's one selling point, and they probably didn't envisage long use at that rate. Put it another way - what other consumer devices could record for long periods at that frame rate?
@@Ozpeter To answer your question my Sony a7 S III for example.
Of course did they not design the device around this use case. Given the fact that the camera was locked to 4K 60 before I upgraded the Firmware tells me that the 4K 120 was a pure Marketing move to keep up with GoPro.
This video simply demonstrates the fact that this particular device is overheating at room temperature in under 3 minutes. It does not weight this fact, it just demonstrates it. There to be found by people not sure if the reports of overheating issues are to be trusted.
@@GreenBoxMedia It seems that in real action camera use - like, outdoors with air rushing past it on that roller coaster - the cooling effect over the metal case can make a significant difference. Sigh. I shall have to get on my bike after 15 years to test that... Meanwhile I just got about 12'30" at 4K60 RS, which worries me more.
@@Ozpeter that is absolutely possible and I will in fact be testing this as well. However the camera also overheated at 4k/60 after about 12 min outdoors when walking through the night (7C°)
What about 1080p or 2.7k? How long does it record for?
Longer.
Mine goes for 7 minutes in a room that's 23C. That equals 28 minutes of finished slomo at 30fps which is plenty, for me. I would typically use that frame rate for about a minute max, for a fountain or a dog or kid running, that kind of thing. For a thrill experience, would you actually want to see the whole thing in slomo x 4? Maybe I'm missing the point... BTW, I assume you are using the latest FW which claims improvements in this respect?
Hey thanks for sharing your experiences with the camera. Yes I am on the latest firmware.
If I may ask: is your camera an European model which overheating protection level can not be adjusted or a global one?
You're also not missing a point.
You're absolutely right technically a 60fps experience is plenty. however it would be nice to have a action camera which would at least Reliably get me over the 5 minutes.
I wouldn't really mind if the 120 fps was locked away behind the Quick Clip feature to ensure a good user experience. But it's not and also heavy marketed which for less tech-seavy users will end in frustrating situations.
@@GreenBoxMedia I'm in Australia - I can set it to "shutdown when it melts" setting but for the time being I'm concentrating on the setting that would apply worldwide. Currently testing 4K30.... Personally I will use it chiefly with 2.7K HS and I really hope it will run for an hour at that setting.
I turned it off after 33 mins in 4K30. I guess for 'normal' use these days, 30fps or less is what most people would use. Next test, 2.7K30 HS.
some 3rd party company working on Magnetic heatsink , i guess …….
That would actually be sick.
How about 4K 60 fps ?
Lasted about 10 minutes at 6C° outdoors.
🙈
🤷♀️
@@GreenBoxMedia chasch nur hoffe das es Firmwareupdate das richte cha
@@MBommeli Don't think so.
I have the solution bring a little ice pack and when it over heat plug it into it ones cool off use it again.😂
Nice!
How can they even sell this trash? 3 minutes of video at max rate. Ridiculous! What a disgrace.
Why don't you try to come up with something with this small form factor and be able to record at 4K 120 fps without overheating?
@@notlkk I think he meant the camera was not ready for prime time. I think it was not ready.
I unfortunately have to agree.
Either don't push your sensor to 4k/120 just because GoPro did so or re-engeneer the housing to actually be able to keep the cam cool.
I don't know if you guys saw my unboxing livestream, but we learned that the 4k/120 probably was added as a response to GoPro after the fact as early firmware only allow for 4K/60
What a mess of a camera such a disappointment… after the action 1 was amazing dji makes this trash…
