- Bug or feature? It appears as the iPhone 15 Pro is not checking the connected storage drive speed when recording Apple ProRes 4k 60fps to an external storage drive like a SSD.

This is a great find! Yes… we need to MAKE SURE to use proper cables/media to make it work. Weird Apple won’t stop recording if it isn’t up to spec. Thank you for sharing this!
I really hope this is a bug and we will see a proper warning message in the next update.
If you shoot with Blackmagic camera app you can set on “alert if frame drop”. (And as a plus, you can record 4K 60 internally😬) obviously all in ProRes
Thanks for the heads up. I have had no time to do a deep dive into the Black Magic ProRes yet, however I have noticed that their files are smaller. I will have to investigate if BlackMagic maybe records ProRes at a lower bitrate.
it sounds like a clickbait to me. The whole point is "iphone doesn't give warning when you are using a slower cable" and that's it.
You're right, that's the point and by doing so laying to us by displaying ProRes 4k 60 as recording format.

This is not a bug, you’ve quite clearly and deliberately chosen a scenario that you knew would never work so you could make a clickbait title about a nothing issue. Use a proper cable, use a fast SSD and use an app that will stop recording on dropped frames, like the Blackmagic Camera App. Then you will get recordings without any problems, but you already knew that.
I think you missed my point here. And I will have to do a better job communicating this, it seems. It is OK that a slow medium is incapable of delivering the full 220MB/s, however. My issue with this is that apple has not implemented (or it is bugged) any measures to warn the user when connecting a storage or cable that is incapable of 220MB/s.

The simple fact is that you don’t know enough about what you are doing and you quite clearly didn’t do enough testing before rushing out a video that was clickbait. Now I don’t mind clickbait titles, it is UA-cam after all and we all do it. But the clickbait title should have reference to the actual video and yours didn’t. You simply went all hyperbole to get the views. If you were familiar with Apple devices or had much video experience, you’d know that Apple, as well as many Android manufacturers, will fall back to VFR either within a set time base or not, regardless of what the settings say when using the native camera apps. Apple’s native app is designed for everyday users, whether it’s capable of ProRes and LOG or not. Most everyday users don’t know and don’t want to know anything technical, they simply want to point the camera and shoot. And this is exactly what the phone will do for most everyday users, who are also very unlikely to use external media to record to. For anyone serious about videography, especially those going to the extent of using external media, they will never use the native/basic app and will use something more appropriate that will do the job properly. You also weren’t very clear with certain things, again, down to a very obvious lack of experience. I would love to see you demonstrate ProRes 422HQ 4K/60 recording for a sustained and substantial period of time to an SD card. Anyway, you can always do the follow up video “I WAS WRONG……..” which while being clickbait will give you an opportunity to be more honest to your viewers and may also get you more views.

@@DavidHarrywow dude, his content isn't THAT bad and most certainly not clickbaity for people that want to understand the issue of dropping frame rates. Why are you assuming that all the viewers watching this video are experts? I faced the same issue and I wanted to find out why and stumbled on this video. I also know now that I should probably consider using a third-party app and not the native camera to stop this drop from happening or prevent me from discovering that my footage fps has significantly dropped at post production.

To easy to grab the wrong cable and I do a lot of video. Now most of my cables are tb3/usb4 and that way no drama. PD always works and they all transfer data fast
Hi, i just get 15 pro and i have a problem. if i turn of the stabilization in camera settings with proress is on, i couldn't shoot hd 60 frame video. Camera stop showing live view and record button not working. The other video modes works perfectly, only i getting the problem with hd 60. Can you test this?
It’s just like video signal bandwidth. You can do a mixture of a lot of resolutions, few rates and color depth with a given standard.
You are right, bandwidth is the corporate here. But why are there no checks for bandwidth? It feels like a bad UX Design to me, which is atypical for Apple
Never had these issues yet. But I always used a proper and fast enough cable. Maybe interesting: If you use the new Blackmagic Camera App, you can even record 4K 60FPS internally on your iPhone. Works perfectly ... at least, when you have enough space available. ;)
May I know which able are you using to while recording and directly transfering to ssd?

even sense I got my iphone 15 i have noticed that when im at my kids sport games and im recording the phone will randomly stop recording, is this the same issue? and how do I stop this?
No this is not that issue. What settings are you recording in? Is the phone overheating?
@@GreenBoxMedianot overheating at all. I have tried recording on 4k-30 and HD-60. I had never had this issue on my iPhone 14 or older and I use to record 4k-60 for 45min -1hour at a time of recording.

yup, the supplied cable is a gen2 cable (seriously slower). Get a gen4 cable (but get used to the idea that finding an nVME enclosure that truly supports a gen4 drive. My testing showed they were only built to support gen3 nVME - half speed).
Try to use a shorter cable too. The longer the cable, the more capacitance and electromagnetic interference as well as more wave self-interference due to the geometry of the cable. I was rather concerned when I saw you using that super-long cable at the beginning.
Have you found any micro SSD card set ups that record at the required speeds? Would really like to record LOG.
Have not tested micro SD Cards yet. My recommendation is an external SSD tho.
I tested a v30 card and I can record 4k 30fps but having issues with 60fps, a v60 card should make the work done

Actually I was planning to buy iphone 15 pro but after watching your video i have changed my mind.
May I know if you are getting prores 4k60fps HDR in 4k60fps now or still you are getting 4k16fps?
When using a USB 3.1 cable and a SSD with at least 250+MB/s write speed it works just fine.
I wouldnt write off the phone. His testing is sound. Use the proper cable and your golden.

Your logic is so flawed. You’re basically asking “why doesn’t a cable that only support 60MBps data transfer allow me to record in a format that requires at least a 220MBps of data transfer.

Type: USB 3.0 Type-C
Daisy chain: No
Audio: 44.1, 48, 96 kHz / 24-Bit, 32-Bit
Video: 720p@60fps, 1080p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, 2k@30fps, 4k@30fps, 4k@60fps
Bitrate: 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s, USB 3.0) - 10 Gbit/s (1.212 GB/s, USB 3.1 Gen 2) - 20 Gbit/s (2.422 GB/s, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2)
And a microcontroller to send the data to the iPhone or to the host device whatever it is (could be a PC, Android Device, a Printer, Etc.) to notify it about such a capabilities. This will make the cable more expensive just to allow the iPhone to notify the user. It is kind of dumb don't you think?

In 4k 60fps in log It will drop frames . 422 HQ is to demanding from what I have been testing.
If using black magic app and change to 422 LT that seems to work fine.

I used the phone on a professional shoot yesterday and I had dropped frames in my footage. Now I need to reshoot.
I have tried several cables and thunderbolt all the same issues.
pan movements show the issue.
I haven't had dropped frames on the USB-4 Cable yet. Maybe your storage had a write issue?

You can't use the charging cable to transfer high data rates - it is limited to USB-2 speeds. To transfer data at the speeds required you need a USB-C data cable rated for transfer at 5 or 10 Gbps. (I had this frustration until I switched cables.)
Yes you are 100% correct. Wouldn''t it be nice if they would also tell you that when the wrong cable is plugged in?
Agree. Apple's documentation is great, but too often you have to dig deep to find things that the buyer should be informed about at purchase in a short user's guide. Same for Macs needing powered hubs to avoid endless mystifying disconnect errors.
the cable that comes with the iphone is only a charging cable and not capable of recording high frame rates. You need usb 3.2 gen 2 the cable. Watch The Verge's video titled "1000 photos later: iPhone 15 Pro Max is still missing something" at time stamp 6:44 for explanation of your exact problem
You're right, but that's not my point. My point is that apple is not warning users when the cable or storage used does not satisfy the minimal spec.

I have a fast ssd.. the cord is good enough.. and my videos get like 2fps for no reason

@@GreenBoxMedianot sure if you’ll read this.. but I’ve been doing testing and research for about an hour today, my testing showed that my SSD handles 420MB/s read and about 320MB/s write on my Mac, this is about USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds, and I’ve tried it with multiple cables, for some reason there’s no way for me to be able to get anything above what looks like 2-5FPS, even on just pro rez 1080, 30fps setting… I hope it’s able to be fixed in an update! Possibly through a method of using system disk as the buffer and you mentioned! (Update)… I’ve done more research and my SSD is certified USB 3.1 Gen 2.

I would appreciate the iPhone having a Thunderbolt 4 port instead of USB 3.0 Type C and recording up to 4k 240fps, but guess what? There are some things that because of its nature can't be done. So imagine a 2 inch-pipe with a water stream that covers the 2 inch opening completely, and you try to connect a 1-inch pipe to direct the water stream to your water reservoir. Even though the 2-inch pipe is sending the 2-inch water stream, the 1-inch pipe won't let it pass, it will allow only 1-inch water stream because of its limitations. Now, neither the cable nor the SSD drive have the capabilities to send a notification to the iPhones or any other phones really, to tell them about their limitations, at least for now. It is possible, however, it requires more than just apple doing it on his end. Your lack of understanding is spreading wrong information. Peace ✌
