- This Old House with Bob Vila. 1985. The Reading Ranch episode 8. Probably the best home improvement show ever starring Bob Vila and true master craftsmen Norm Abram.

Omg that intro brought me back to my childhood. As a female kid I found this interesting. I found it relaxing. Im 38 and I still like shows like this. Yet I have never built anything other than putting together prefabricated desks and furniture. My dad knew a lot about carpentry and such so Maybe that's why I've always liked these types of shows b/c they remind me of him. In some ways.
Sesame Street,Mr Rogers,Reading Rainbow and 321 Contact during the day. National Geographic , Nova, Nature and This Old House in the evening. Those where the glory days of PBS. I wish PBS could be return to being PBS of my childhood.
Don't forget The Joy of Painting!
This, exactly this
@@JorgeCat78 and lets not forget Newtons Apple either loved all these shows
Norm framing things to the nearest 1/16th of an inch.....that’s why he’s the best!!!
Here I am, almost 40 years later and I want that greenhouse window, a TOH shirt and Bob's sweater...😂
The Glory days of this old house. I miss these old shows.
You know you are way too stoned when you are watching 35 year old TOH episodes at 4:00 a.m.
What if you are sotally tober?
😆
History is repeating! Ahrrg

@@HotHotHandleHandlelol I feel you. I’m only 28 I found it from Bob vila being in home improvement
Norm has balls of solid granite walking on those bendy planks with the weight of a heavy window.
Rich Trethewy was so slim! This is such fun to watch again after seeing it the first time around. Norm, casually standing on those two planks while installing that large window unit, gave me pause.
1985 man, this doesn't feel that much different from the times I watched This Old House as a young child in the late 90s. The theme music brought back some early childhood memories.
Ever since ...ancient times ,i always wanted a shirt and a this old house hat.
One day yhat dream might come true.
**Long Live PBS**
Norm Abram could build a live dog out of 1/2" pine and carpenter glue
Haaaaaaaaaaa probably right
That is awesome! For years I have always said Norm could build a running car at his shop out of wood
And a biscuit joiner.
Congratulations this is the best comment on UA-cam
Bob: it needs to move 1/8 of an inch.
Norm: here let me nail it.
😂😂
I had to go back and rewatch that LOL
Nahm: I had to build this within 1/16 of an inch of perfection, so Bobs 1/8 couldn't exist!
And he used a HAMMER to do it!
You guys don't understand what tacking means.
You don't understand how editing works, either.
Smh
@@WardCo yeah....that's how window flanges get nailed....with a hammer even now in 2020.Your attempt a humor was a huge fail.
Bob: it needs to move an 1/8 of an inch. Norm: Let me tack it right here lol
I wondered. Lol
"Settle down Bob....I got this!"
I thought that too
Is the plumber really working in a sweater vest?
Truly one of my favorite TV shows back in the day. So much respect for these craftsmen, doing everything the RIGHT way...except for that ladies tile job. Yikes! Richard is so cool...and so thin!!! And yes, Bob was the pitchman, but a great host. Totally agree the early episodes were the best. These current million dollar builds are so far from reality. Used to also enjoy all the factory tours.

TOH has always been a great show! The Dorchester triple they did this past season was a lot closer to the original mission of the show. They were compelled to stick to a budget!
we were all in our prime back in 1985 not just Vila and Norm.. what a decade. best in world all around life in general. and the music and entertainment. so much positive energy.
80s music sucked, in fact so much about the 80s sucked. It kickstarted all these yuppies and consumerism.
As if I couldnt love him more, I find out he sews?!? Tommy sews! What a mench!
Norm is being modest. He framed it to a 1/32. And Vila asking him for a level is hilarious. 😂
Good to see Bob and Norm again from many years ago.
no vapor. no room for expansion ahah love it
Omg. Don't step back Norm! 🙈
Bravo, Bob. The Maestro. This episode is called “The Christmas Sweater”
He wears the same sweater years later on his show home again.
I cant believe this was 85 ....time has just flown by
That opening logo and sounds just hit me with a crazy rush of nostalgia. Hadn't heard it in so long. My dad used to watch 'This Old House' all the time when I was a child in the 80's.
Richard seemed to have a more favorable view towards pedestal sinks than he does now. I remember a more recent video where he flat out told a homeowner he doesn't like them.
Things tend to change in the course of 30+ years
They have largely gone out of style I think
The homeowner tiling the floor was nearly suicidal. Thanks for the support, Bob.
My grandmother and I would watch this every Saturday. That began my love for home improvement. Brings back memories.
Vila did an excellent job of hosting and being the conductor so to speak. Norm was utterly authentic and unpolished on-camera at this point. The hosts that came later each did a good job in their own way but I like Vila the best in that role. I like the early shows much better than the high-end reno show it has now become. But any episode of TOH is better than anything on HDTV with the fake deadlines, manufactured drama and attempts at comedy.
Well said! I feel exactly the same.
Ditto.
Yes this old house is much better than hgtv home make overs.
Bob Vila is a national treasure. He’s an asset to America the likes of which we may never see again. Plus he’s hung like a horse.
Yeah, a lot of people bash Bob for not actually knowing much about what to do, but that wasn't his job, his job was basically to be the "audience everyman" and ask what the audience would ask. He was excellent as a host. Norm was excellent as a Carpenter. Both good at their jobs.
Holy crap, that's Trethewey!
HELL YES IT IS!
Moustache man himself lol. You should look him up in 79 when the first show aired. He’s gone through some changes we’ll say lol
Little Richard*
Norm walking on that plank without a harness wouldn't fly today.
Bob Vila Couldn’t hold norms toolbelt on his best day if his life depended on it. Norm Is the GOD of home improvement projects. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 94 and I gotta tell ya the guy is a class act ! I can guarantee norm has forgotten more than Bob ever knew.
This was probably my favorite TV show of the mid to late 80s, Of course, there was only about 3 or 4 channels back then.
Same here, I grew up watching this, my parents thought I was weird but as you pointed out the selection was limited back then.
Richard was skinny back in the day plus had a killer mustache.
I like the chemistry between Bob and Norm, they always reminded me of my dad and Uncle doing a house project in the 80s when they were young (even down to the beards, hair, and glasses), they always made me feel at ease.
The best way home improvements should be done... new shows don't teach much. Bob and Norm are truly craftsmen's in their trades.
First time I've ever heard anyone call Bob a craftsman. Can you name something he's built? Bob was certainly a fantastic host but he's no craftsman.
Bob was nothing but a windbag
Norm forgot more than Villa will ever know
Gosh does the WGBH jingle bring back wonderful memories of my favorite show. And then there's that classic TOH theme with as classic of an episode with Bob, Norm, and seemngly introducing a young Rich Tretheway. Funny look that Norm gives Bob when he says the big window needs to move 1/8th inch as Norm ignores him and nails the flange! Always thought it was odd that TOH never had a master electrician on board given they had all the other trades represented.
Wow, thanks for uploading this episode! I remember when I saw it in 1986!! :)
Like him or not, Bob was a good host.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! i miss him!
@@honestytoafault
Old Bobby Blow Jobby, I says.
Look at Richard!!! So svelte!
OMG A young Richard sighting!
Hair!
Young Norm! What a blast from the past!
Young norm? How about young Richard??
Porn stache!
Haha ... "The whole bathroom is going to be grey " bet it's been re done lol
Norm can build a functioning space shuttle out of an old refrigerator box.
grew up watching this with my dad. Wish I could get all of the first 10 or 15 seasons but cant find them anywhere. Cannot describe the feelings of nostalgia - takes me back to watching them on Sunday afternoons on PBS channels 12 and 23 in Philly/NJ
Brand new Ford tempo looks 17 years old already
No flashing or window wrap, times have changed
The look on Norms face when Bob says they’re lining up perfectly even. 🤗
40 years old .
Pura vida great show tv .when Born was a young man :(great craftsman with power tools Norm Abram I learned a lot from his tv show programs pura vida
Norm, Norm he's our man, if he can't do it nobody can :)
I miss Bob! I get why he left..... but i still miss him.
25:32
Bob: so can I help you with this
Norm: yeah go grab a dust pan and a broom kid
I absolutely LOVE these early episodes, lots of memories, though as a former journeyman electrician we were taught to never ever back stab switches or plugs, but I digress I still love these early episodes.
Norm was my favorite host !
Look how young Norm looks !
I never knew about a walk in bay window. Nice.
Norm and eventually Tommy Silva are true craftsman. Villa was the pitch man.
Villa was the money man
I like this old house and home again.
Can we just mention how much Nathan looks like a young Norm?
The good old days. A distinct lack of large crews and nail guns. More relatable.
Omg richard, so skinny and that moustache! 🤣🤣
Dang the skylights are old technology. Modern ones self close when it rains
Norm made the show
I don't know about that tile job.
laurie and scotts cold
doug smelt the felt now how bold
greg richardson fold
this old house
Putting a nail through piping is probably even more common now - a very easy thing to do with today's pneumatic nailers.
2' wide scaffold 20' off the ground, no harness, no rail...not a job for those nervous around heights, I guess.
Osha didnt bother residential nack then
@@joesmoth2610 That isn't the point.
yes very dangerous
It was buckling too as he shimmed across it.
I was nervous lol
Hats off to Frank!
4:45mins- "I don't think we have to the frame is so level that its going to be. . . !" haha
Do you have a level, Norm? It’s so square we won’t need one. Oh!
I once read that the character of Al Borland from Home Improvement was based on Norm Abram. This is hilarious.
Hello Christie. Love 80's chicks.
I must have been a strange kid,cus I love this old house when I was little.
Wow I young but I wish I lived back then
Mary Jane starting seedlings.... how original bob
Can’t ever see Bob villa without thinking about Tim Taylor.... Never seen a plumber dressed that nicely.
Bob was such a big help with the door, that he decided to cut it short to the wonderful tip.
Bob Vila thinks he’s so awesome. Norm is the man!
Bob IS awesome!
@M Carrol Grow up, Gertrude.
Great Idea! Tile over a window frame....
Agreed. I'd like to go back and see how long that actually lasted
That was pretty strange.
Funny thing is all this stuff they are doing has been already upgraded :)
Well it has been 35 years. I don’t think that’s too surprising
Motors became alot smaller and rather puny in the late 70's. Bob's crack about the V-8 engine is a knock on import vehicles.
Bob wasn’t that clever.
Hahahahaha on the tile!!!!! Bet they absolutely hate it!!!!
The dumbest thing you could ever do is put a window in a shower. I,be torn many out and closed them up
I'm guessing that whole bathroom is now in a landfill...
BOB I'M READY FOR ANOTHER SHEET. Why is she yelling at Bob, he's only 3ft away from her 😂
15:40
Maybe Bob was having trouble focusing that day :-)
Bob says you got a level?? Nope it's already Perfect Don't Need No level you go Norm
HAHAHAA
"Oh, Frank!" 3:38
Super Cool Dangerous - no one's roped off
During this episode Bob was in the middle of a bitter divorce from his old spouse
Wow. Sooooo akward. If those bathroom tiles could speak.
I give Frank a lot of credit. The homeowner took on a lot of work without the benefit of instructional videos.
Seeing Rich without his iWatch is nice.
Bob that is cold he tells the homeowner let me check in with a professional.
My adventure with the tree began with projects from Stodoys.
I searched for the other parts but only found 2, Part 7 and Part 8. where are parts 1 - 6?
How long did the tiles stay on the wall?
A little sketchy.
She didn't butter the back of the tiles. Isn't that standard?
“Hi Kevin”
Looks like Bob's trying out the new Festool auto wire stripper 2000!
15:00 looks one heck of a hack title job 😧.
I know how much people loved Bob Vila but man sometimes he says the wrong thing at the wrong time.
The electrician looks like the guy from Karate Kid
