  • The time has come to harden and temper the rivet heading tools we made earlier. Both tools will be hardened in oil then tempered in a small toaster oven. Then we will try them out by riveting a pair of tongs together.

      From the ceiling up it is a 2300 degree wood stove chimney. The short section between forge hood and the ceiling support is just ventilation duct.

    John, not that it matters any, but liked the other cameras lighting better. (it had a yellowish glow). it gave the shop a warm “santa’s workshop” type feel. just an opinion as i’m a diehard subscriber due to content first and foremost!! thanks as always!!

    I love your tool making videos ! I make as I need like every other Smith it’s crazy the amount of tools I have made over the years lol tools and tongs I’m always making something for someone and then decide you know if I had a pair of tongs that held this at a perfect 45 degree angle I could make a more uniform set of wall mounted candle holders lol so there’s another set of tongs ... I bet I’m close to 40 sets of tongs and a ton 2000# of tools lol !

    Jihaa.. coal fire. I just love the use of the tradional coal forge.
    Is there a rule of thumb of how long the rivet (or round stock actually) should be?
    Thanks!

    • @dicksargent3582
      @dicksargent3582 5 років тому +4

      Standard rule of thumb for rivet heading is to use 1 1/2 times the diameter of the rivet for the head.

    Would it work to align the internal structure of hot metal, to subject it to a strong magnet for a period of time?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 років тому +1

      I think that may be above my understanding. Probably something to consult a metallurgist about.

    The bottom tool is slanted to one side. may need to straighten to avoid off kilter rivets in the future.

    You mention needing to add some more oil; would you use fresh unused motor oil, or used motor oil?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 років тому

      never motor oil, it is full of stuff that isn't good for the steel. I use commercial quenching oil formulated for heat treating. I will recycle the current oil and stat with all fresh

    Hello John, may I ask what you might think is a silly question. What's the differance between using a forge with a Tue as apposed to a Firepot ?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 років тому +2

      Even a fire pot uses a tuyere. it is simply the pipe through which the air passes on its way to the fire pot. In a side blast forge the tuyere comes in from the side and there is no cast iron pot. There are advantages to both and people who will argue loud and long about which is best.

    Would a rivet chucked in a drill with some carborundum powder/oil paste polish out the header? I have had some 400 and 800 grit powder kicking around for 30+ years, no idea if available and if so, where.

    • @peterm3533
      @peterm3533 5 років тому +1

      Great idea Jan-Reinier, others wanting to try this could use automotive valve grinding paste, I'm pretty sure that stuff is readily available. I just love John's videos.

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 років тому +1

      The rivet being soft iron would grind away long before the depression in the tool steel would be polished. But with enough rivets I am sure it could be done.

    • @jan-reiniervoute6701
      @jan-reiniervoute6701 5 років тому

      Agree, Uncle John. Just to even out the last roughness (or even just highlight high spots) by rocking the anointed rivet head, the softness of the rivet preventing stuffing up your work piece. That is what would happen to me when impatient me uses too much tool. Keep your snippets coming, they are packed with info/experience.
