For anyone building this, there is one piece missing from the cut list in the description - you need 5, not 4, 9" 2x2x1/8 angle lengths, and the 5th needs holes drilled 1" from either end. It's mentioned in the video, but not in the cut list. Also, having built one, I'm now disassembling to add a piece of all thread to connect the two 24" angle iron pieces at the fire brick end. I move mine a fair amount, and occasionally found the pieces could slide around a little with that end unsecured. Have to add, this is, in fact, as simple as it sounds to make. Great design, and using my local metal supplier, was able to build (with burner) for $140.

stay with it , using your hands will always increase your general learning . I started out w/ my grandpa at the forge , 8 yrs old , I wish I could have learned much more . That was 1968 and how I wish he could have been shared with all on UA-cam . I never got to learn enough from him , stroke 1973 , but I have benefited from the confidence and self reliant attitude of his , a can do attitude ! Good luck with your future , I graduated HS 1978 , lot of changes , stay centered. Life is like a mug , you get out of it only what you put into it .
Oh how I wish I had come across you a few years ago when I had better health ! Without a doubt I would be making one of these ! When I think about it, I really don't know why I didn't make one when I was building so many other things, I could have used it very often ! It was such a pleasure to meet you and your family Scott and I will treasure it ! You sir are a great benefit to the human race and I wish you and yours all the best ! 👌 Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍 👍
Ken Gamble your an asshole the guy was trying to be encouraging. Go enjoy your pity party. Your not the only handicap in the world. My father raised five children with a severe handicap. Grow up.
I can't say thank you enough. Just re-starting the craft after 25 years, and I used your plan (albeit doubled for a lengthier forge) and I'm back at it.
i know this is an older video but i just found it. i been looking for a forge i can build with pretty much nothing to start getting into knife building. ive pretty much watched all of youtube looking for the best idea i could find to make mine and this is it, its perfect. thank you old man.
I've been building things for years and by far this is the easiest, most adaptable, simplist forge build I've ever seen and I have come with some smart stuff but I bow down to this amazing smart gentleman, and his technique on explaining his steps are to the point without over explaining the living hell out of it, thank you sir for taking the time to make this video and look forward to seeing more of you work and teachings !
Thanks for another great video . I never comment on them but have been wanting to thank you for the style you put into your works . The "can do attitude " in which you deliver the lessons of your trade is a welcoming environment to many of us . The confident self reliant air of an experienced craftsman teaching" the tricks of the trade " is assuring to the widely varied skill set of your viewers . I am also slipping up on 60 yrs. and have worked a wide scope of tasks , being a rancher calls for one to be handy at much , polished at few , but it is a part of being us . Thanks again , keep spreading the good .
I'm an engineer, I've built one of these to start a new hobby and I have to say it works flawlessly. I've been mainly building pins for old tractor tracks but I'v also effectively used it to melt scrap metal of various sort to and cast it back into small ingots. Perfect.
A couple of years ago I built and have been playing with the forge that the King of Random made in one of his videos. It has served me well, but I can already see many advantages your forge offers that I just can't get out of a bucket of fire. I'll be building one of yours as soon as I can gather the materials. Thank you, sir.
Excellently delivered video & tutorial. My son & I built this design. Was fun to make, easy. Now we are building our own burner - will be cookin' metal in no time ! Thanks for the video.
I've been taking courses at Kilroy's Workshop in Colorado Springs, CO to learn. When I'm not in that shop, I'm standing in yours, eagerly watching and learning. Thank you for what you do for all of us.
When I got into forging, the thing that shocked me the most is how easy it was to get started. If you’ve always wanted to do it, just take a day and do it. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish.
You're a brilliant teacher. I'm a beginner jeweler/metalsmith. blacksmithing is a little over the top for me now. I've tried it a little bit. Very fascinating for sure.
Incredible video! I work in the steel fabrication industry and you would not believe how few younger people just don't get this stuff. I truly appreciate that you are teaching generations how to create with their hands and their minds. Kudos to you Sir!!
Seeing videos like this, and other channels knife making videos has spurred me and made me realize how much I miss blacksmithing. I am determined now to finish my forge that I started building years ago, so soon I will be beating metal again!
This is awesome! I'm primarily a woodworker with tight space. Took some blacksmithing classes and love it. This forge is perfect for my situation. Thank you for taking the time to compile the tool list and make the forge video!
I've been fascinated by black smithing for a long time, but the forge seemed like the big obstacle (aside from the space required). This forge makes it very easy to start and you can do it in the backyard. Thank you!
This is serendipitously timed. I had just recently commented on your Facebook post about how I started blacksmithing when I was 12, shoeing horses at 17, and then I built myself a very similar (albeit heavier and longer) forced air forge when I was 21.
There are three crafts I'm working toward mastering, Woodworking, leather working, and Blacksmithing. My grandfather did all three, not only was he able to make alot of what his family needed on the homestead (thereby saving money) but he also sold much of what he made. He wasn't filthy rich, but the skill in his hands ensured his family never went without.
I can always tell when a man knows his craft and skill...and You know...thank you for sharing your knowledge and sharing it in way that's easy to follow. I also appreciate your positivity! Thank you

That's a great little forge. I read an article in a country living magazine many. years ago (while waiting in the dental surgery) looking something very similar to your design and thought I should make one. Unfortunately on that occasion I was called in quickly and never got to finish reading the article. I am a woodworker and general tool tinkerer but occasionally have the need to do some metal working or heat treatments. I guess it could be left under a lean to roof to lessen the risk of woodshop fires. Many thanks, I think I'll build this little gem. Perfect.
You know. I just watched this to watch it because I thought. Oh this might be cool to do one day. And I know I’d never get around to it but what you said at the end really opened my eyes and I will build and start this. Thank you
What a awesome simple forge. I'm in Norway and everything here is very expensive, but this forge is very affordable and will give me the start i need. Thanks a lot.
This is by far the easiest way to build a forge. Remember people you don’t need to go out and buy expensive tools to start out. You can probably build this forge for less than $40 buy some hammers from harbor freight, and if you don’t have an anvil you can use a sledge hammer head in a stump as one or a piece of railroad iron works great. Thanks for the video Scott!
Well I built it, and it works like a hot damn. Thanks a lot for the tips man you helped me get into something I really enjoy. Just to make my contribution, I'm using a homemade venturi burner and I decided to tape a blowdrier onto the air intake. Easily doubled my heat output and fuel efficiency for next to nothing. I highly recommend doing this.
Thanks for this video. As a knife maker that has been heat treating in grill for the past year I think I am going to make this forge for heat treatments
Excellent video! I started the craft a number of years ago, working at a local smith's shop. I wound up having to stop and lost touch with him, but I've been itching to get back into it. This is a perfect little forge! And the design is easily adaptable if you need a little more space inside, as well. Wonderful video!
Yep, that will work. On the LP forges I have made I angle the burner down but up will work too. Brick is fine, Kaowool and a wire mesh screen to form the insulator will work, I have a forge that burns charcoal (hard wood not Kingsford garbage) that is made from wood and insulated with dirt and it works fine. A block of steel from the scrap yard will serve as a darn good starting anvil and I have made a video about it. Getting into smithing need not be expensive. Seek out local forging clubs and groups such as ABANA or CBA (Calif Blacksmith Assoc) that I have taught smithing classes for over 18 years. Good groups local to you will give you much more and CORRECT information than most back yard want to be smiths who make videos on UA-cam. There are quality channels such as this one (Essential Craftsman) but there are a lot more out there not worth watching for any reason.
Just got the quote for the metal from the local steel stockholders, everything needed for £45, same for a burner from ebay. Have 8 soft firebricks kicking around so all in all under £100 for a fabulous little forge. Thanks for this Essential Craftsman.
I just found your channel. Thanks you for sharing your knowledge with those interested in blacksmithing. My father was a welder and blacksmith. Wish I still had his old Anvil.....
You're incredibly inspiring, thank you sir. I have been slowly building my way up to blacksmithing for years now, I'm a Carpenter by trade but have also done a lot of welding along with other trades. This year i started wood turning and lathe work and now I'm ready for a look into blacksmithing. Thank you for the encouragement, I'm going to build one of those forges today, legend 👌
I always use Windex to lube my drill bits. It keeps it cool while cleaning oil off of the surface. It is surprising how well it works. I was taught this from a welder/machinist who worked for Gates rubber company.
You may be right in believing that the majority of your viewers and subscribers are middle aged men and older, however, I am 20 and have always had a passion for crafting and making things with my own two hands. Your videos are an inspiration to the next generation of craftsman I hope you continue to make videos and share your knowledge with us. God bless.
Hey, I’ve watched and enjoyed your channel for a number of years. This was great and will help a lot of people give metal working a try. But that is not why I wrote you today. My Christian faith has taken a lot of “hits” over the years, but I still try to walk in my basic Christian root beliefs. The reason I mentioned that is because, I see the simple, loving peace that emits from your spirit in everything you do, and it gives me such peace. It’s like you don’t have to tell any one that you are a Christian... you just walk in His peace and your work is the “witnesses” your faith. You are a “father” to so many young ones out there and I imagine they feel something that they can’t quite understand when they watch your instruction. It’s probably much like people in ancient Israel must have felt when the stumbled into a lowly carpenter’s shop and got to visiting with the carpenter’s “son” one day, long ago. Looking at your comments that you get, you can see what I’m saying so clearly. It gives me such hope because, we so need to quit “preaching” and start spending more time living the message. I think I’m older than you (not sure, but I’m 68 yrs. old). But, still... I’d just like to tell you...”When I ‘grow up’ I hope I can become more like you.” (Smile) Have a good day.
Thank you a lot, i was starting with blacksmithing a while ago but not having a forge has kept me from forging, this is going to help me a lot. Thanks, apreciate it!

Moving into a new house with shop space. I was gonna buy a forge. Most "home builds" are concessions to poverty of some kind. But I REALLY like this build. Definitely going to put this together. Thanks for posting it.
You obviously have never paid for a box of fire bricks or a roll of KO wool. - The poverty comes AFTER you get the forge together. - No $$$$$ = No forge.
This is a neat little forge. I want to emphasize a couple of points. First, if you’re building a burner, make blessed sure you know what the Hay Budden you’re doing. You’re building a flame thrower, hopefully a controllable one. Mistakes, leaks, burned propane hoses...not just a bad day. Maybe somebody’s last. Second, forget the word “brick” when dealing with firebrick. It’s even softer than you think, and some of the comments below indicate that this didn’t register. Think “delicate.” It’s not as cheap as regular brick, either, so it gets frustrating when you crunch it up.
Thank you so much for the inspiration and guidance you give! I actually starting blacksmith apprenticeship next week on monday and something like this would be perfect to set up at home to start practicing metalworking on my free time! I've been a welder for 3 years and blacksmithing is the next adventure im heading out on ! Wish me luck and thank you again for everything! Already downloaded the tool list too!
Please show us how to make a burner, that would be a nice way to conclude a forge build. Yes there are some online but I bet you can do it much simpler.
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt just go to harbor freight and buy a long weed burner. www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?dir=asc&order=EAScore%2Cf%2CEAFeatured+Weight%2Cf%2CSale+Rank%2Cf&q=weed+burner
@@paulbooth5778 in this case, I'd say look again. Looks like we've got a gas valve going into an open sided T, then the extension and nipple. The gas valve controls fuel supply and the open T allows the fuel to draw its own air with the venturi effect.
Paul Booth dude, i have built numerous burners, 3rd grade science class taught me everything I needed to know about fuel and air mixtures. Besides, 3000 degrees will be more than enough to heat iron and steel. Good day.
Coming from someone with machinist experience, this was an excellent video to watch, and only makes me want to get back into making things. I definitely have a continued interest in blacksmithing as well.
I'm not sure why, but for some reason I was greatly amused by the part where you decided to use the large torch to help light it while demonstrating how to make and use such a tool-minimalist setup. That's a special kind of irony that I highly enjoy.
Almost done building this project. I got all the way to the assembly stage following the cut list and then realized that you need 5 9" cuts of angle iron (with 2 of them longer if you want to build the hearth) -- four 9" sections to box in the bricks, and the 5th one drilled for the cross support on the burner side of the forge.
Hi Mr. very good working, Bravo, A +++++, i will do soon this same propane forge but i bought yesterday the 180 000 Btu burner on E-Bay. For me using thermal wool is dangerous beacose it is cancerigène, it is why i prefer using thermal brick! I saw you with a hamer in this video anf i prefer to will build a power hamer? The anvil in my region it is very, very expensive, it is crazy price about 1 000.00 $ i saw one at 2 000.00 $, it is why i will use a block of steal. You are a very good teacher Mr. i like to wath you on UA-cam. My uncle (brother ' s mother) was a very good blacksmithing but he never want to show me the blacksmithing when i am young guy, why i did not know it was an Irish (O'Reily) now i am 66 years old and this winter i make a blacksmithing forge in my garage. 2020 02 16 Saint-Joseph de Mékinac, Trois-Rives, Québec et Labrador.

Great design Scott! I’ve been wanting to build a forge for awhile now, I’m a carpenter and want to expand my skills into smithing, I will definitely build this one!
I'm a woodworker who has also been looking to expand my skill set to include blacksmithing and will be building this forge as a starting point. Go Dawgs!

Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍 👍
Thanks Ken! It was terrific to meet you as well!!!!
Very few health problems would complete stop you. A much slower pace will still get the job done.

Do I know you ?
no just trying to give encouragement.
You are the first one I’ve seen on UA-cam that drills holes in metal the right way!! Must have been a machinist at one time. Great build as well.
Perfect.
Can you list the parts for the propane burner
A couple of years ago I built and have been playing with the forge that the King of Random made in one of his videos. It has served me well, but I can already see many advantages your forge offers that I just can't get out of a bucket of fire. I'll be building one of yours as soon as I can gather the materials. Thank you, sir.
Excellently delivered video & tutorial. My son & I built this design. Was fun to make, easy.
Now we are building our own burner - will be cookin' metal in no time ! Thanks for the video.
Thank you. I learned more from this video than ANYTHING I've watched on the internet. Good job man.
Very simple and a great little forge. I will be building this with my grandson very soon. Thank You
This is awesome!
Thank you!
I know a young, aspiring blacksmith who will appreciate this video.
Thanks
Class act this fella. What an incredible tutorial. Thank you for taking the time man.
Thank you for your commentary your easygoing voice and likeable personality keeps me watching keep up the good work
Lucky young guys who have access to such great resources, thank you for your efforts and sincere, informative videos.
This is the easiest forge I've ever seen made
Thank you
You have built my confidence... I wish to create my own jewelry and tools... But my budget allows me to start off very small... Thanks for sharing...
I can always tell when a man knows his craft and skill...and You know...thank you for sharing your knowledge and sharing it in way that's easy to follow. I also appreciate your positivity! Thank you
I'm a woodworker - boy did I enjoy your video - subscribed
John Bredemere - You will not be disappointed for subscribing to EC. Now is the time to bing watch all his videos. Don’t forget to like and share them as well.
Thank you
Out of all the ways to build a simple forge, I like soft fire bricks the best. Good insulate value and pretty durable.
What a awesome simple forge. I'm in Norway and everything here is very expensive, but this forge is very affordable and will give me the start i need. Thanks a lot.
By far the best gas forge and how to video I have found. Thank you Sir :)
I don't see how some people can dislike this video. Great video as always Scott and Nate
There are quality channels such as this one (Essential Craftsman) but there are a lot more out there not worth watching for any reason.
....thank YOU very much from a old man in Switzerland !! very nice made and soooo inspirated explaind !!!Thank YOU sooooo much !!!
kind regards !!!
Been trying to find a way to do this without the need for welding, thank you very much for this.
Just got the quote for the metal from the local steel stockholders, everything needed for £45, same for a burner from ebay. Have 8 soft firebricks kicking around so all in all under £100 for a fabulous little forge. Thanks for this Essential Craftsman.
That’s just what I’m going to work with ! THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE.
I just found your channel. Thanks you for sharing your knowledge with those interested in blacksmithing. My father was a welder and blacksmith. Wish I still had his old Anvil.....
That's a very nice build, I would love to see more of these simple-tools-builds!
I was taught this from a welder/machinist who worked for Gates rubber company.
iMaGeArChY I have to try this
Simple, functional, and infinitely customizable. Brilliant! Thanks.
You’re a great man, you’ll open so many doors for future generation of blacksmithing.Good job and proud of you.
Absolutely just love this channel. Awesome content. My confidence in myself is steadily increasing. Thank you for all your insights.
Thank you a lot, i was starting with blacksmithing a while ago but not having a forge has kept me from forging, this is going to help me a lot. Thanks, apreciate it!
Hey! It’s Me Bronson. I Came to Your Arizona Meet and Gave You an Unfinished Coaster. I Loved Meeting You. You Were Much Nicer in Person Than I Thought You Already Were.
Do you just run everything you type through a title case converter? Why is it like this?
Greetings Bronson from another Bronson. 👍
I'm thinking about getting into smithing and have watched countless videos on the craft but this video is straight to the point with no messing around. Very helpful and informative. Thanks 🙂
I think I'm going to try this design for use in glass blowing. Thank you for your information!
All this information you put out is just awesome. People like you make the world a better place. Thank you.
Love this guy... Keeps it simple and he knows a lot of stuff..
You're mistaken sir, the burner is not simple. The internal regulation of the fuel and mixing it with the air is a very exact science.
Good day.
Look up the Zoeller burner designs, they are some of the best out there. zoellerforge.com/index.html
You came up with a very, very nice design. Simplicity, as Leonardo said, is the ultimate sophistication. Thank you!
I love you attitude. I want a forge for casting and melting metals in a crucible . Similar but different than yours. Your presentation is excellent.
This was so well done. I thank you. At 57 years young i just started forging and I’m hooked. Great videos and i hope to see more.
This is a great little forge. You beat me to the punch. I’m putting out a brick forge build video this weekend as well. Great job as always.
Just used your design to build my first forge. It was easy and I'm very happy with the result. Thanks!
Hi Mr. very good working, Bravo, A +++++, i will do soon this same propane forge but i bought yesterday the 180 000 Btu burner on E-Bay.
Awesome idea! Well instructed and informed for the beginner or the professional in my opinion. Incidentally this site is my wife’s. This is Jim from Jimmy’s blacksmithing. Keep up the great work. Thank you for helping mankind.😊
I like that you can create a small forge pretty quickly and cheaply. Great video, thanks! 😎⚒
Thank you for all the information Scott. This video alone will be responsible for a handful of people to get into smithing
I hope so!!
Very interesting and complete guide to the forge. Awesome video!
That's a pretty slick little forge. And I really like the burner design
Thanks. Came here for knowledge on forge building and left inspired. Good job👍
Go Dawgs!
Think you give plenty of info to build it, you're giving me the concept and allowing me to work out how it will work with the materials I hope to accumulate once finished renovation on the house. Love your pace as ever and great content.
This is excellent sir! Love the design. I recently made one of those burners for ~$21.00! Also an easy project.
