Bottom rivet setting tool

- Rivet heading tools are generally used in pairs. In todays video we look at the making of a bottom rivet header to go in the the anvil. I tend to prefer the riveting tools that fit the anvil because they stay put in use as compared to one that just sits on the anvil.

Thoroughly enjoy tooling making videos, John! 🐾🔥⚒
So the last 2 days in a row as I was watching your video you set your glove on fire. I found myself yelling to my phone "John! Your glove is on fire!" My daughter laughed at me and said dad I don't think he can hear you. LOL.
Another great video. Thanks John.
I don't think they ever actually caught fire. But they do smoke as they get hot while my hand inside the glove doesn't. Alt least not as fast
@@BlackBearForge Thanks to you I use the same gloves. They are great. I just broke out my second pair. Oh and by the way theywere just starting to flare a little. I do the same.
Thanks for the mini class on rivet tools. Hope you enjoyed the vid i put up on the FB page :)
was that the "stop everything meme"? Funny, I wish Io could remember what I was correcting
Thanks for the great lesson.
I love that power hammer.
Looks like it would make life easier working harder materials.
Yes it does. I have no regrets buying this hammer
One tool you didn't mention (and I think is a terrific idea) is the swageing tool for making the Prichel hole shank.
I do plan to cover those types of tools
I’m loving this series so far and will definitely make a set in the future for my rivets!!!
Great tip on stamping in the steel type! I appreciate how thoroughly you think your processes out, makes for quality tools and informative videos, thanks very much
I need some of these now. Thanks for the video John!
Great visit. Thanks John.
Hi John .Knowing I to needed a bottom rivet tool.I to built mine just yesterday.Useing my new home built ball tool from coil spring.I found a piece 2"x4" in which I made a rivet inpression on .
I weld my bottom rivet tool onto a 3"x7" on one far end then on other end I weld a hardy tool that held the rivet tool very well in center of my undersize anvil.
Also built your double calipers just yesterday
Thanks again John
Sounds like you had a good day in the shop
I have not a use for a power hammer but I sure want one
I have a severe case of power hammer envy going on now...thanks Bear!
Love watching the Say-Mak. Need to give her (or him) a name.
The name is Alfred. I just need someone that can paint the name on neatly.
Thanks for another excellent video. You have so many projects I want to do myself!
Great as always! Thanks for the video!
Good informative video. Thanks.
Any plans on showing us your metal lathe?
I can show it, but I am far from being an expert with it
if you search for forge welding black bear is the first one in the list nice looking like your getting out in the lead
Thats pretty cool, thanks for letting me know
@@BlackBearForge your welcome
Good John, I have made a rivet set, but when I use the top tool it seems to crunch the end of the rivet i'm forging down, puts a funny mark around it it's not symmetrical like the head of the rivet.
Sounds like you have just a little to much material for the head.
All your projects and ideas are so helpful, especially for beginning smiths. I have one question today....WHERE CAN I GET A HOOK SCALE LIKE YOU HAVE? I have searched the web and cannot find one like it. You help would be greatly appreciated....thank you so much in advance.....
That is made from a square ua-cam.com/video/3_ZqaJ93dpc/v-deo.html
👍✌️
This is becoming a nice series.
What happened to your other cross peen hammer? Noticed you're using a smaller one for some time now...
Thank you, till next time!
The handle cracked and i just haven't made a new handle for it yet.
John, could you address when it's important to de-stress?
Any tool steel that has been forged or machined should be normalized or annealed before hardening.
Wouldn’t you stamp the size rivet it was made for so next time you need to rivet you can easily grab the right tool without having to try them one by one to fined the one it fits like a set of drill bits set up in size order
Probably a good idea. However I have over 100 sizes of drills in the shop and only use 5 sizes of rivets, so it isn't that hard to find the right one.
At the moment only 5 have you not heard the saying “the blacksmith with the most rivet headers (Tools) wins “ I bet you said the same thing about tongs once but now you have hundreds you still have decades of blacksmithing left in you. I think if you are already stamping a tool putting the size it’s meant for just makes sense but we all have our own way of doing something this was only meant as an idea for those that read the comments

Who do you pronounce that? 😂👍
Fird? 😁
just like it's spelled
I understand that tool height is up to each individual smith but why do I see so many with their anvils so low that they have to bend over so much? That can't be good for your back while swinging a hammer
I prefer my anvil a bit higher. I think many people are using old recommendations from a time when strikers were more common
You are losing weight. I hope you are feeling well.
No such luck, but I really could stand to lose some
