@UncleMikeNJ - Hi, UncleMikeNJ. You do realize that he's not referring to Bernie as in Bernie Sanders but to the movie, "Weekend at Bernie's"? Here's the IMDb page URL www.imdb.com/title/tt0098627/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 . The point Maher was making was about wheeling in what amounts to be the corpse of a person, to make an appearance. I understand you may be alternatively referring to Maher voting for Bernie Sanders who also is up in age though. To be truthful, that's my fear today, that my choice to make is for someone who's going to be the eldest president in office, provided he survives to the election and wins. And no, I'm not voting for the incumbent, who's in it for himself, not for America.
sgtcrab1 No kidding. It's like no one is even pretending we don't live in a dynastic oligarchy. I mean.....Clinton vs Bush??? Are you kidding me? Really? Wow....
you guys...seriously I get it if you don't like hillary but it's a completely false equivalency to compare her to the bushes and lump them together by using her to prove a point that is actually true about the bush but has nothing whatsoever to do with hillary. the bushes are all blood related. it was first their dad who ran, then oldest son, then younger son. that's the literal definition of dynasty and that's how those types of governments work. it's almost never the wife who takes over after her husband especially for a position of power like POTUS. hillary was a politician before marrying another politician and has a list of accomplishments on her own. and I'm not saying the bushes don't but lumping them together for the sale of that argument kind of invalidates it altogether with all due respect
@@terr777 Actually, Terry, that might do it. She defends that clown by day, her husband, George, trashes him on Twitter at night. They're still together. Perhaps they're both laughing. I'd really like to think so.
There was a time, about 200 years ago, when government service was actually that - service, not a career. Then the Congress actually strove to do the people's business. Today the business of members of Congress is staying in Congress. Government will not get better until there are term limits other than defeat at the polls or death.
The political machine is so embedded that it cant just be term limits. Terms must also be nonn-consecutive, so legislators spend ZERO time fundraising for reelection.
Its about time we outlaw lobbying and put term limits on congress. You're exactly right, governments service should not be a career. Its about serving and representing the American people, not themselves.
There is something to be said about the perils of an older generation refusing to step back and hand the reigns of power to the next generation. Don’t get me wrong, experience should be valued, but not deified. Experience offers answers to the problems we have faced before and may face again, but new problems often require new solutions, and refusing to see that while clinging to the old ways is just as harmful as refusing to learn from the past. Also, the leadership of the Soviet Union looked like an octogenarian ward in the years leading up to its collapse, just saying.
For the record, I'm glad and even proud that Cory Booker went ahead because even with my belief that we should respect our elders, there comes a time when you have to take grandpa's keys from him after he keeps steering the car in a ditch more than once! That's the argument about politicians holding on to their jobs way too long when they can no longer do it! : - |
I think it is in reference to "House of Cards" which is a television series (not actually aired on television!) based around the inner machinations of politics.
I have the congress book from 1955 when John Dingall Sr. Was still in that seat. Now John's wife Debbie is in that seat. She is 30 years younger than he is.
How about we talk about both sides, you also have Nancy Pelosi, Diane Fienstien, Chuck Schumer, and Maxine Waters they are over 65 years old. Talking about Crypt keepers.
yeh, but they're not being wheeled around and they're not dumping in diapers...there is a big difference between those 4 and the ones mentioned in this clip...
I don’t think people realize, Strom Thurmond ran for President as a Dixiecrat against Harry Truman and Thomas Dewey back in 1948. And he was still in the senate in 2003.
I think it's not only that they're not held accountable for anything they do, I also have a problem with their age itself. Old people are a lot more conservative than the general public, and most of them have no idea about new technologies. (See Sopa debates and statements) I'm not saying all old congressmen are bad, but we're definitely a lot worse off than with a younger congress.
How many are voting and have Alzheimer's disease, or some other mental incompetence? Surely, beyond a certain age (or even across the board), there should be some test, (You need one to drive a car!) Surely participating in government requires some standard.
Robin Hislop Just saw this segment; apologize for the late comment, but...who administers the test? Doctors like the guy who reported Trump only weighs 239 pounds? What do you call the person who graduates last in medical school? Doctor. 😆😆
There is a minimum age to be president, there should be a maximum age, (70) beyond which you are ineligible to run. I know it would eliminate both trump and Biden, but that might be a good thing.
While it may not change that, it may do two things - one, make that incumbant that's not going to be there, say, more than a decade, less valuable to the lobbyist - since there's going to be turnover and they're going to have to keep up - and two, have people in office that are a little more in touch with the people who put them there, and the actual state of the current (or at least recent!) world, versus how it was in 1950-60-70 when they first entered office.
I have no problem with age as long as it does not affect their work, i.e. Inouye. However, when they are in office for 50+ years and do not contribute, barely even attend votes. This is mainly why we should have congressional terms.
New rule. If one party is not wanting to aid you in passing bills that are against the interests of the American public, then you don't get to claim they aren't cooperating with you.
I think the point was that they DON'T participate because they are not held accountable for their performance, did you miss the line where he said, :This is not about age, it is about congressmen who suck at their jobs because their jobs are not at stake." ?
Bill maher for VICE PRESIDENT! Then he could do what he does now and we could have a guy be president who knows how to be president. I'm 100% serious about this.
To answer your question the UK's House of Lords scrutinises Bills that have been approved by the House of Commons. It regularly reviews and amends Bills from the Commons. While it is unable to prevent Bills passing into law, except in certain limited circumstances, it can delay Bills and force the Commons to reconsider its decisions. In this capacity, the Lords acts as a constitutional safeguard that is independent from the electoral process. It's just as corrupt as the US Senate sadly.
Oh, it's definitely true. It was just funny because it happened as long ago as it did - emphasizing what and old geezer Thurmond was. :p Don't get me wrong -- I certainly don't condone his actions, but it was funny how Maher took swipes at him like that.
Agreed, but, Can't afford? I have kids that come to school eating hot cheetos and a monster soda from 7-11 for breakfast who are "low income" and on free and reduced lunch. Seems to me a bag of apples and a loaf of wheat toast is very much cheaper, but their parents can't find the time to cut some apples and toast some wheat. They would rather send them out with $5 bucks a day just for a breakfast snack. Fast food is not cheap. Rice, beans, and home grown veggies will save you a bundle.
The absolute very first thing which needs to be changed in our society is the concept of career politicians. There should be term limits on every political seat. That way, we wouldn't have people making societal decisions which don't affect them...
Renowriter77 - Do you really think that would change things? politicians would still take the money from big business and then go work for them after their term. I really don't think that term limits would change anything.
This agism. Besides their time in office, Bill made no mention of any other factor that would make these guys any different than any of the younger members of congress. Swing and a miss Bill!
OMG. So weird seeing Kelly Anne before she sold her soul.
It’s never nice seeing that dunt
Yes, but she still looks better than she does at her side gig hosting Tales From the Crypt.
OMG it's so refreshing to see Kellyanne enjoy herself laughing hysterically instead of barking and being hysterical.
Might be one of Bill's best segments. Freakin' hilarious.
Kellyanne Conway actually looks happy here. She's a skeleton of what she used to be at the moment. What a poor, poor woman
Adam Haycock Poor, poor woman made her choice. 😲
Rachel Garber00
@@rachelgarber1423 and shit comments like that is one of the reasons she might be unhappy.
Actually smiling and laughing, she must miss that. But that's what happens when you sell your soul. A brief break from hell here
no sympathy from me Adam
“...a position he earned by eating Jimmy Hoffa.”
That line will always be funny.
US Congress: Where you can find more mummies than in The Valley of the Kings.
Turey Taino lmao!!!
The terms for Congress and Senate should be no more than 2 terms get rid of those politicians living from the government some looks like mummies
I wonder how many had to google Valley of Kings
Funny how Kellyanne looks likeable
@nmeunier Oh, that happened long ago.
They all remind me of Simpsons characters. The first guy's like chief Wiggum and the others are all Mr. Burns.
LOL!

Agreed, they really need to change this system. At least set a limit to the number of terms you can serve, this almost like a monarchy.
Crown Prince Jeb is lining up against the dowager Ms Clinton. Monarchy anyone?
sgtcrab1 No kidding. It's like no one is even pretending we don't live in a dynastic oligarchy. I mean.....Clinton vs Bush??? Are you kidding me? Really? Wow....
sgtcrab1 Where was that joke when Bush Jr got in?

Just like the presidency, every other elected AND appointed government official should have a term limit
